Abstract:Microwaves can safely and non-destructively illuminate and penetrate dielectric materials, making them an attractive solution for various medical tasks, including detection, diagnosis, classification, and monitoring. Their inherent electromagnetic properties, portability, cost-effectiveness, and the growth in computing capabilities have encouraged the development of numerous microwave sensing and imaging systems in the medical field, with the potential to complement or even replace current gold-standard methods. This review aims to provide a comprehensive update on the latest advances in medical applications of microwaves, particularly focusing on the near-field ones working within the 1–15 GHz frequency range. It specifically examines significant strides in the development of clinical devices for brain stroke diagnosis and classification, breast cancer screening, and continuous blood glucose monitoring. The technical implementation and algorithmic aspects of prototypes and devices are discussed in detail, including the transceiver systems, radiating elements (such as antennas and sensors), and the imaging algorithms. Additionally, it provides an overview of other promising cutting-edge microwave medical applications, such as knee injuries and colon polyps detection, torso scanning and image-based monitoring of thermal therapy intervention. Finally, the review discusses the challenges of achieving clinical engagement with microwave-based technologies and explores future perspectives.

Abstract:This paper presents the design and development of a set of microwave exposure system based on 1.8GHz mobile RF signal. This system can work on several modulation types to do microwave exposure experiment under different specific absorption rate (SAR) and prepare the way for researches in the effect exerted by the electromagnetic signal of mobile on human health. The hardware is made up of several RF instruments, waveguide and computer, and the software introduces the accomplishment of the control system and the algorithm of control.

Abstract:Microwaves are non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation with waves of electrical and magnetic energy transmitted at different frequencies. They are widely used in various industries, including the food industry, telecommunications, weather forecasting, and in the field of medicine. Microwave applications in medicine are relatively a new field of growing interest, with a significant trend in healthcare research and development. The first application of microwaves in medicine dates to the 1980s in the treatment of cancer via ablation therapy; since then, their applications have been expanded. Significant advances have been made in reconstructing microwave data for imaging and sensing applications in the field of healthcare. Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled microwave systems can be developed to augment healthcare, including clinical decision making, guiding treatment, and increasing resource-efficient facilities. An overview of recent developments in several areas of microwave applications in medicine, namely microwave imaging, dielectric spectroscopy for tissue classification, molecular diagnostics, telemetry, biohazard waste management, diagnostic pathology, biomedical sensor design, drug delivery, ablation treatment, and radiometry, are summarized. In this contribution, we outline the current literature regarding microwave applications and trends across the medical industry and how it sets a platform for creating AI-based microwave solutions for future advancements from both clinical and technical aspects to enhance patient care.

Abstract:Microwave metamaterials are electromagnetic devices structured on the subwavelength scale that have enabled extraordinary ways to control microwave fields. These versatile elements pave the way for next-generation biosensors in future healthcare systems that can overcome key technological limitations encountered by existing radio-frequency components when they are interfaced with the human body. In this chapter, we discuss the developments in microwave metamaterials for biomedical sensing. We highlight their working principles and applications in both current and emerging biomedical technologies including transmission-line biosensors, wireless biosensors, microwave imagers, body sensor networks, and their wireless powering approaches.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel compact microwave-based imaging (MWI) system for monitoring the evolution of diseases for personal applications. Limited by the size of the system, it uses one single ultra-wideband antenna and monostatic measurement configuration to obtain the scattered microwave signals from the human body. The monitoring of diseases is realized by differentially comparing diagnostic signals obtained from each measurement, i.e. only the difference in the scanned region between the current and the previous measurement is highlighted to indicate the progressing of the affected tissue. To evaluate the system, we simulate it in a real scenario to monitor the recovering progress of bone fractures, for which a body-mimicking phantom to emulate the dielectric properties of human bone and fat at microwave was also investigated and produced. The results show that the proposed system is capable of tracking the relative change of bone fractures for the monitoring purpose.

Abstract:Due to the non-ionizing radiation, microwave has the advantage to reduce the injury for tissue and organs compared with X-ray and CT. In most situations, however, the microwave antenna is used by directly illuminating the human tissue and most energy is radiated into free space which leads to the low efficiency and poor treatment effect. We proposed a planar millimeter lens which could gather the electromagnetic radiation into a limited area in the superficial human tissue to realize the physiotherapy.

Abstract:Medical imaging techniques, including X-ray mammography, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging, play a crucial role in the timely identification and monitoring of breast cancer. However, these conventional imaging modalities have their limitations, and there is a need for a more accurate and sensitive alternative. Microwave imaging has emerged as a promising technique for breast cancer detection due to its non-ionizing, non-invasive, and cost-effective nature. Recent advancements in microwave imaging and sensing techniques have opened up new possibilities for the early diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. By combining microwave sensing with machine learning techniques, microwave imaging approaches can rapidly and affordably identify and classify breast tumors. This manuscript provides a comprehensive overview of the latest developments in microwave imaging and sensing techniques for the early detection of breast cancer. It discusses the principles and applications of microwave imaging and highlights its advantages over conventional imaging modalities. The manuscript also delves into integrating machine learning algorithms to enhance the accuracy and efficiency of microwave imaging in breast cancer detection.

Microwave imaging has recently been proposed for detecting small malignant breast tumors at early stages. Microwave imaging for medical application has been of interest for many years, recently it proposed for detecting small malignant breast tumors. Microwave images are maps of the electrical property distributions in the dielectric properties between cancerous tissues and healthy tissues; it is possible to use it as a diagnosis tool. In this research contribution, the authors have over viewed the research status of microwave imaging for malignant tumor detection. Abstract:Abstract Microwave is a form of electromagnetic radiation with one meter to the one-millimeter range. It has the excellent capacity to carry a lot of information and is a good choice to deal with data crisis. It can be used in many fields, and the development of microwave technology is being studied extensively. Microwaves can be used in scientific research, and the structure of the internal substances can be analyzed according to the different degrees of microwave absorption by different substances. Also, the microwave physiotherapy instrument created by microwave technology can kill some diseased cells and play a therapeutic role. This thesis will discuss and introduce some basic knowledge and equipment of transmission line theory, waveguide theory and microwave chemistry, to have a basic understanding of microwave technology. The results show that microwaves should have optical characteristics, skin effects, and other properties. Antennas, radars, transmission lines, and remote sensing measurement applications are all related to these characteristics

Abstract:Synthetic microwave focusing methods have been widely adopted in qualitative medical imaging to detect and localize anomalies based on their electromagnetic scattering signatures. This paper discusses the principles, challenges, and limitations of synthetic microwave-focusing techniques in medical applications. It is shown that the various focusing techniques, including time reversal, confocal imaging, and delay-and-sum, are all based on the scalar solution of the electromagnetic scattering problem, assuming the imaged object, i.e., the tissue or object, is linear, reciprocal, and time-invariant. They all aim to generate a qualitative image, revealing any strong scatterer within the imaged domain. The differences among these techniques lie only in the assumptions made to derive the solution and create an image of the relevant tissue or object. To get a fast solution using limited computational resources, those methods assume the tissue is homogeneous and non-dispersive, and thus, a simplified far-field Green's function is used. Some focusing methods compensate for dispersive effects and attenuation in lossy tissues. Other approaches replace the simplified Green's function with more representative functions. While these focusing techniques offer benefits like speed and low computational requirements, they face significant ongoing challenges in real-life applications due to their oversimplified linear solutions to the complex problem of non-linear medical microwave imaging. This paper discusses these challenges and potential solutions.

Abstract:We review the physical principles, method of operation, measurement limitations, and potential medical applications of microwave thermography. We present detailed results of a study of breast cancer detection at 1.3 and 3.3 GHz, including the dependence of detection rates on microwave frequency, time, tumor depth, and tumor size. At 1.3 GHz, microwave thermography detects breast cancer as well as infrared thermography (true-positive rate = 0.76 when true-negative rate = 0.63). When the two methods are combined, the true-positive rate increases by about 0.1 over that of either method alone.

Abstract:This paper introduces an antenna grouping method based on the principle of confocal imaging method. In view of the fact that traditional multistatic array confocal imaging method requires high computation time which hinder its application in rapid diagnosis, the proposed antenna grouping methods only uses the multistatic data among antennas within each group. The data between the antennas from different groups are not considered, which is more efficient to reconstruct the image. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by computer simulation and experiment.

Abstract:Understanding the nanoscale electrodynamic properties of a material at microwave frequencies is of great interest for materials science, condensed matter physics, device engineering, and biology. With specialized probes, sensitive detection electronics, and improved scanning platforms, microwave microscopy has become an important tool for cutting-edge materials research in the past decade. In this article, we review the basic components and data interpretation of microwave imaging and its broad range of applications. In addition to the general-purpose mapping of permittivity and conductivity, microwave microscopy is now exploited to perform quantitative measurements on semiconductor devices, photosensitive materials, ferroelectric domains and domain walls, and acoustic-wave systems. Implementation of the technique in low-temperature and high-magnetic-field chambers has also led to major discoveries in quantum materials with strong correlation and topological order. We conclude the review with an outlook of the ultimate resolution, operation frequency, and future industrial and academic applications of near-field microwave microscopy.

Abstract:This chapter presents the frequency of operation and antenna design for wireless medical implantable devices which is classified into the following categories: low-frequency band; medical implant communication service (MICS); ISM and Wi-Fi; wireless medical telemetry services (WMTS); and ultra-wideband (UWB). It provides a brief summary of the various methodologies for the design and development of these antennas using numerical simulations and characterizations. The chapter discusses the antenna performance parameters in the human body environment, a thorough comparison was conducted between the proposed design and some other existing antenna topologies in terms of link budget estimation, and proposes a wireless power transfer enabled frequency reconfigurable system and provides initial inductive link budget calculations. Next, it proposes a medical monitoring and sensing system with the capsule antenna system using RFID technology. Lastly, the chapter discusses an RFID bio-tag which can be used for patient monitoring, including vitals and location, in hospital environments.

Abstract:Microwave imaging employs detection techniques to evaluate hidden or embedded objects in a structure or media using electromagnetic (EM) waves in the microwave range, 300 MHz-300 GHz. Microwave imaging is often associated with radar detection such as target location and tracking, weather-pattern recognition, and underground surveillance, which are far-field applications. In recent years, due to microwaves' ability to penetrate optically opaque media, shortrange applications, including medical imaging, nondestructive testing (NDT) and quality evaluation, through-the-wall imaging, and security screening, have been developed. Microwave near-field imaging most often occurs when detecting the profile of an object within the short range (when the distance from the sensor to the object is less than one wavelength to several wavelengths) and depends on the electrical size of the antenna(s) and target.

Abstract:The development of new medical-monitoring applications requires precise modeling of effects on the human body as well as the simulation and the emulation of realistic scenarios and conditions. The first aim of this paper is to develop realistic and adjustable 3D human-body emulation platforms that could be used for evaluating emerging microwave-based medical monitoring/sensing applications such as the detection of brain tumors, strokes, and breast cancers, as well as for capsule endoscopy studies. New phantom recipes are developed for microwave ranges for phantom molds with realistic shapes. The second aim is to validate the feasibility and reliability of using the phantoms for practical scenarios with electromagnetic simulations using tissue-layer models and biomedical antennas. The third aim is to investigate the impact of the water temperature in the phantom-cooking phase on the dielectric properties of the stabilized phantom. The evaluations show that the dielectric properties of the developed phantoms correspond closely to those of real human tissue. The error in dielectric properties varies between 0.5–8%. In the practical-scenario simulations, the differences obtained with phantoms-based simulations in S21 parameters are 0.1–13 dB. However, the differences are smaller in the frequency ranges used for medical applications.

Abstract:Electromagnetic medical devices refer to a category of equipment used for medical diagnosis and treatment by utilizing electric field, magnetic field, or electromagnetic field. Electromagnetic biological effects including the thermal effects and non-thermal effectsare the main principle and the bases of assessment for innovative electromagnetic medical devices. Physical factors influencing the biological effects include electromagnetic energy as well as permittivity and permeability of organisms. Thermal effects are evidenced by temperature rise. The cells do not suffer from obvious injury, such as the reversible and/or irreversible damage injury caused by the process of coagulation, drying, carbonization or vaporization, which make it able to be applied in high-frequency therapy, microwave tumor therapy, radiofrequency ablation, electric surgery,etc. Non-thermal effects is evidenced bybiochemical and physiological response in the molecules, cells, tissues, organs and body with no temperature rise in the organism when exposed to the electromagnetic field, which can be applied to pacemakers, heart defibrillation, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy, and so on. In recent years, research has carried out in both the basic principles and equipment of electromagnetic medical devices. Some electromagnetic medical devices were developed, such as electromagnetic-phoresis apparatuses, transdermal drug delivery, and irreversible electroporation tumor therapy. Effective means of safety control of electromagnetic medical device is to establish the electromagnetic limit standard and to implement according to the standard based on human physiological integrity.

Abstract:Microwave sensors offer attractive solutions to highly sensitive, rapid, and non-invasive measurements. Microfluidic technology has exquisite advantages of small size (manipulation of nanoliter sample volumes), low cost, and fast detection time. By integrating a microwave sensor with microfluidic technology, a sensitive, reproducible, and portable detection system can be constructed. This review focuses on microwave microfluidic biosensors for various biological and medical applications, including the liquid characterization, heating and temperature measurement, cell analysis, biomolecule and bacteria detection. We present several recent advances in each application field of the developed biosensors. Finally, we put forward the perspectives on the future directions and propose the strategies to cope with the challenging issues and problems relating to the development of next-generation microwave microfluidic sensors.
