Abstract:Micro-and nano-photonics are advanced research topics of the 21st century right in the center of attention of the world's major developed countries, and will have significant and far-reaching impact on the future high-tech, national security, green energy and other areas. In recent years, the United States, European Union and other developed countries and regions have set up many major research plans for Micro and nano-photonics. Chinese scientists have also called on the government to establish relevant research programs to strengthen and improve the micro-and nano-photonics research in Chi-na.Micro-and nano-photonics combine the advanced research results of photonics and nano-technology, and is an indispensable science and technology discipline of the 21st century.Chinese scientists have achieved sig-nificant amounts of world-class research results in this field.In order to further investigate the impact of funda-mental theories and related key applications of Micro-and nano-photonics on the national economy in terms of advanced manufacturing and strategic resources, the Departments of Information Sciences, Mathematical and Physical Sciences, Engineering Material Sciences, and the Policy Bureau of National Natural Science Founda-tion of China ( NSFC ) co-sponsored the 115 “Shuan-gqing forum”on“Micro-and nano-photonics”.38 scien-tists from 26 institutes and universities participate in this forum. Through in-depth discussions, the scientists summarized the key scientific problems in this field and explored the forefront research topics and funding strate-gy.A review on the forums is published in this special issue.

Abstract:In microwave photonics, the combination of concepts, devices and system is emphasized. Its typical research includes: photonic microwave generation, photonic signal processing and conversion, distribution of microwave signals in optical links, and so on. These research results promote new technologies such as Radio over Fiber (RoF) communications, the subcarrier multiplex and fiber transmission of Cable Television (CATV), optical control beam forming network in phased array radar, test technologies in microwave frequency, and so on.

Abstract:Wireless communications are rapidly becoming the means of data and information transfer for a broad range of applications. As wireless communication applications continue to expand, the information transfer rates are evolving toward the Gigabit per second data rate and, for some applications, there is even a need for terabit per second data rate transfer in the wireless network. In addition, wireless terminals often require instantaneous switching and communications between network members. For most applications directional antennas are needed to support the high data throughput requirements, and phased array antennas are the only high gain, directional antennas that can be rapidly switched to provide instantaneous communications among network members scattered geographically. Wireless terminal equipment is currently designed to operate in the 1 to 60 GHz frequency range and, traditionally, these equipment are designed with RF hardware. More recently, optics technology has been demonstrated to play an important role in RF systems as the True-Time-Delay in the phased array antenna, and, for some systems operating at high data rates, optical interconnects at the baseband level require E-O and O-E conversions. This paper discusses the considerations in using optics technology in the design of the wireless terminal network including optical signal processing, optical backplanes, optical networking, optical interconnects, and optical components. This paper also describes the architecture of an RF wireless communications network using a range of optical technologies.

Abstract:The optical communication technology features low cost,wide band,low loss,and anti-electromagnetic interference performance.By combining the optical communication technology with the radio millimeter wave communication system,the Millimeter Wave Radio over Fiber （MM-RoF） system boasts a lot of advantages,including wide band,small size,light weight,low cost,low loss,and resistance of electromagnetic interference as well as high transmission quality.The MM-RoF technology solves the problems faced by traditional microwave transmission system at the millimeter wave band,namely,high loss and inability to resist interference efficiently.Meanwhile,it puts an end to the bottleneck of millimeter wave electronic devices and thus is deemed as with great potentials.The MM-ROF technology that supports multiple formats and services signifies one of the significant trends for future development of the MM-RoF system.

Abstract:Microresonator-based frequency combs (microcombs) are very promising for microwave photonic applications for their advantages including wide bandwidth, large line spacing, and compact volume. Recently, various microcomb-based microwave photonic systems have been reported such as high-spectral-purity microwave generation, microwave photonic signal processing, true-time-delay beamforming, etc. Outstanding performances including low phase noise, high reconfigurability, and large Nyquist bandwidth have been demonstrated, showing a bright future of microcomb-based microwave photonics.

Abstract:Microwave photonics (MWP), harnessing the tremendous bandwidth of light to generate, process and measure wideband microwave signals, are poised to spark a new revolution for the information and communication fields. Within the past decade, new opportunity for MWP has emerged driven by the advances of integrated photonics. However, despite significant progress made in terms of integration level, a fully on-chip MWP functional system comprising all the necessary photonic and electronic components, is yet to be demonstrated. Here, we break the status quo and provide a complete on-chip solution for MWP system, by exploiting hybrid integration of indium phosphide, silicon photonics and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) electronics platforms. Applying this hybrid integration methodology, a fully chip-based MWP microwave instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) system is experimentally demonstrated. The unprecedented integration level brings great promotion to the compactness, reliability, and performances of the overall MWP IFM system, including a wide frequency measurement range (2-34 GHz), ultralow estimation errors (10.85 MHz) and a fast response speed (0.3 ns). Furthermore, we deploy the chip-scale MWP IFM system into realistic application tasks, where diverse microwave signals with rapid-varying frequencies at X-band (8-12 GHz) are accurately identified in real-time. This demonstration marks a milestone for the development of integrated MWP, by providing the technology basis for the miniaturization and massive implementations of various MWP functional systems.

Abstract:This paper presents an introduction to the researches in microwave photonics based packages and its application, a 973 project (No. 2012CB315600), which focuses on addressing new requirements for millimeter wave (MMW) system to work with higher frequency, wider bandwidth, larger dynamic range and longer distance of signal distribution. Its key scientific problems, main research contents and objectives are briefed, and some latest achievements by the project team, including generation of linear frequency modulation wave (LFMW), tunable optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) with lower phase noise, reconfigurable filter with higher Q value, time delay line with wider frequency range, down conversion with gain, and local oscillator (LO) transmission with stable phase, are introduced briefly.

Abstract:Based on the characteristics of superposition, entanglement, non-locality and non-clonality of quantum mechanics, quantum information science can break through the physical limits of classical information and open up a new information processing function different from classical electromagnetic application methods. Due to the advantages of high-energy single photon in practical applications, the research and application of optical quantum information technology dominates the development of current quantum information technology. However, the free-space transmission of light waves is greatly affected by weather conditions and atmospheric particles. Comparing with other wave bands, classical microwave signal shows good penetration ability when transmitting in free space. By introducing quantum mechanics, microwave signal also exhibits non-classical merits. As quantum microwave signal inherits both classical transmission performance and quantum non-classical features, it can be utilized as a significant signal source for diverse applications in microwave domain, such as quantum communication, quantum navigation and quantum radar, which are based on quantum technologies in large scale and dynamic free space transmission. There are three main experimental platforms on which quantum microwave is studied and produced. They are cavity quantum electrodynamics(C-QED) system, circuit quantum electrodynamics(c-QED) system, and cavity electro-opto-mechanical(EOM) system, involving with several nonlinear effects such as Kerr effect, Casimir effect, three-wave mixing, etc. In this paper, the setups of these platforms and the preparation principles are introduced. Meanwhile, the preparation principles and methods of microwave single photon, entangled microwave photons, squeezed microwave fields and entangled microwave fields are summarized and analyzed in detail from three aspects. The present status of experimental progress in the relevant fields are summarized and listed as well. Besides, key problems in the application of quantum navigation in free space utilizing quantum microwave are probed. Among them, the most pressing ones are preparation ability, decoherence in transmission and detection of entangled quantum microwave signals, which are also discussed and analyzed in this paper. Finally, we look forward to the future development of quantum microwave technology. It mainly consists of manufacturing microwave detectors with high efficiency, designing thermal photon filters, and developing suitable antennas. We hope that this study can provide useful reference for scholars who are engaged in or interested in research related to quantum microwave technologies.

Abstract:A microwave photonics-based channelized receiver for broadband vector signals is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A 4-line optical frequency comb (OFC) generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) is used as local oscillator (LO) signal in the in-phase/quadrature (I/Q) receiver for coherently down-converting the broadband signal into different channelized bands. By properly setting the frequency difference between the OFC comb line and the broadband signal, either homodyne or heterodyne detection of I/Q receiver is realized. To compensate the amplitude difference and phase difference of adjacent channel signals, an overlap ratio of adjacent slices is introduced for channel equalization and signal reconstruction. The simulated result shows the error vector magnitude of 4-channel channelization for a reconstructed 8 GBaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) signal is very close to the original one. In the experiment, 2-channel channelization for a 2 GBaud QPSK is realized and the whole signal is reconstructed successfully. The experimental result also proves the quality improvement of reconstructed signal with an increase of channel overlap ratio.

Abstract:The background and significance of the research on optical generation technology of millimeter-wave are introduced.Several mainstream optical generation technologies of millimeter-wave are reviewed,including direct-modulation,external-modulation and optical heterodyne;the improved methods are also summarized,including a novel scheme for optical millimeter-wave generation based on double-sideband modulation,and a new double-uniform fiber grating millimeter-wave generator and so on.In addition,two novel optical generation technologies of millimeter-wave are reviewed,including a method to realize millimeter-wave subcarrier optical signal generation by using a double wavelength optical spectrum of a certain distance with fiber grating filter and optical frequency multiplication.

Abstract:With the rapid development of microwave photonics, which has expanded to numerous applications of commercial importance, eliminating the emerging bottlenecks becomes of vital importance. For example, as the main branch of microwave photonics, radio-over-fiber technology provides high bandwidth, low-loss, and long-distance propagation capability, facilitating wide applications ranging from telecommunication to wireless networks. With ultrashort pulses as the optical carrier, huge capacity is further endowed. However, the wide bandwidth of ultrashort pulses results in the severe vulnerability of high-frequency RF signals to fiber dispersion. With a time-energy entangled biphoton source as the optical carrier and combined with the single-photon detection technique, a quantum microwave photonics method is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The results show that it not only realizes unprecedented nonlocal RF signal modulation with strong resistance to the dispersion associated with ultrashort pulse carriers but provides an alternative mechanism to effectively distill the RF signal out from the dispersion. Furthermore, the spurious-free dynamic range of both the nonlocally modulated and distilled RF signals has been significantly improved. With the ultra-weak detection and high-speed processing advantages endowed by the low-timing-jitter single-photon detection, the quantum microwave photonics method opens up new possibilities in modern communication and networks.

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive overview and critical analysis of the many applications of microwave photonic techniques and functionalities within the domain of optical fiber sensors. The study aims to provide an in-depth examination of the utilization of microwave photonic technologies in enhancing the performance and capabilities of optical fiber sensors. Through an examination of existing literature and research findings, this review seeks to shed light on the potential benefits. The review focuses on recent advancements in the field. We offer experimental approaches that can be employed for the characterization of these systems, along with the utilization of two unique microwave photonic technologies in various applications. The paper elucidates the methods by which high-resolution discrete and quasi-distributed optical sensing functions can be attained. Research that will be done in the future also includes emphasis added.

Abstract:In recent decades, microwave photonic channelization techniques have developed significantly. Characterized by low loss, high versatility, large instantaneous bandwidth, and immunity to electromagnetic interference, microwave photonic channelization addresses the requirements of modern radar and electronic warfare for receivers. Microresonator-based optical frequency combs are promising devices for photonic channelized receivers, enabling full advantage of multicarriers, large bandwidths, and accelerating the integration process of microwave photonic channelized receivers. In this paper, we review the research progress and trends in microwave photonic channelization, focusing on schemes that utilize integrated microcombs. We discuss the potential of microcomb-based RF channelization, as well as their challenges and limitations, and provide perspectives for their future development in the context of on-chip silicon-based photonics.

Abstract:Owing to their high capacity and flexibility, broadband wireless communications have been widely employed in radio and microwave regimes, playing indispensable roles in our daily life. Their optical analogs, however, have not been demonstrated at the nanoscale. In this paper, by exploiting plasmonic nanoantennas, we demonstrate the complete design of broadband wireless links and networks in the realm of nanophotonics. With a 100-fold enhancement in power transfer superior to previous designs as well as an ultrawide bandwidth that covers the entire telecommunication wavelength range, such broadband nanolinks and networks are expected to pave the way for future optical integrated nanocircuits.

Abstract:For the last 30 years, most microwave photonic systems demonstrated relied on discrete photonic devices and optical fibers, and thus their performances are routinely limited in terms of the cost, footprint, reliability, power consumption, and so on. To address these issues, now it is widely believed that MWP systems of the next generation will be built on photonic integrated circuits (PIC). On the other hand, motivated by applications in optical interconnect systems, silicon photonics based on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform has grown as one of the most matured photonic integration technology. Therefore, a lot of efforts recently are devoted to integrate MWP systems on SOI so as to take advantages of silicon photonics, including CMOS compatibility, low cost and large volume manufacturing, and so on.
