Abstract:This research investigates how waterjet treatments enhance the durability of pre-textured Inconel 718 alloy surfaces and their subsequent impact on fatigue life. By harnessing the microjet effects created by the fluid jet process on the microtextured surfaces, the study uses finite element and fatigue analysis models developed in ABAQUS and Fe-safe to examine residual stresses and surface roughness post-treatment. The study confirmed through experiments that waterjet processing significantly boosts the alloy's resistance to fatigue by generating substantial compressive stresses on the surface. The highest compressive stress was achieved with high-density waterjets (WJ-Hd), followed by low-density (WJ-Ld) and standard waterjets (WJ), with WJ-Hd generating stress levels more than double that of WJ and nearly 40% higher than WJ-Ld. The surface roughness was found to increase with jet velocity, affecting the central and edge areas of the sample differently depending on the waterjet type. In fatigue tests, the order of performance from highest to lowest was WJ-Hd, WJ-Ld, WJ, and untreated samples. High-density waterjets extended the fatigue life considerably by preventing crack formation and growth, suggesting that such treatments could significantly improve the endurance and integrity of Inconel 718 alloy surfaces. This study contributes new understanding to the field of waterjet strengthening for Inconel 718 alloys with pre-fabricated microtextures.
