Abstract:The goal of this article consist in interpretation of the major metaphor in Günter Grass’ novel “The Tin Drum”,  and coverage of its interrelation with symbolism of the image of the protagonist Oskar Matzerath. The subject of this research is the metaphor of stopped time. The time stops for Oscar with regards to physical and emotional development. Special attention is given to the fact that the protagonist of the novel, who comes into the world with adult intelligence, deliberately stops his development at the age of three. Using the indicated metaphor, the author of the novel forms the key traits of the image of the protagonists: perpetual child, demiurge, trickster. The novelty of this research and special contribution of the author consists in revelation of direct correlations between the aforementioned traits of the main character of the fundamental problems of human existence. A child who refuses to grow up, symbolizes infantilism and denial of the generally accepted socio-ethical norms. At the same time, G. Grass describes dissolution of the surrounding world and blames specific nation in the crimes against humanity, endowing Oskar Matzerath with the traits of trickster and demiurge. The acquired results can be used in textbooks on the history of foreign literature and culturology; as well as in writing term and graduation theses by students majoring in the humanities.

Abstract:This book studies European ELF for particular and aims to record the hybridity of European ELF within a community of practice where “Europeanness” is expressed during the use of English. Linguistic materials on Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) press conference 2010 are studied, from which four linguistic levels are examined for illustrating the internal hybridity of European ELF. This is shaped by "Europeanness", or speakers' willingness to be part of Europe, by weakening their associations with national countries.

The complex study that appeared at Tracus Arte Publishing House, this year, sits on the shelf of the library between the author’s previous titles, completing (and probably to be continued) the poliform portrait, viewed from the inside and outside, of the critical commentary in our theatre areal.

Abstract:Abstract The end of the 1980s was marked by a general interest in Japan because of the country’s ongoing economic boom. Shortly after, in 1990, Japan was guest of honour at the Frankfurt Book Fair and, in 1994, Ōe Kenzaburō was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. All of this led to the establishment of a good number of Japanese literature series being published in German-speaking countries and a considerable increase in the translation of Japanese literature. Furthermore, the dispute over a novel by Murakami Haruki on the TV show Das Literarische Quartett (The Literary Quartet) in the year 2000 had a remarkable influence on these developments. This dispute triggered the tremendous popularity of the author in German-speaking countries and simultaneously led to a change of attitude towards the translation of Japanese works in publishing houses. Against this backdrop, this paper investigates the image of Japanese literature portrayed in review articles of German language newspapers at the beginning of the 21st century. The main themes of these review articles will be presented in 12 categories that constitute the image of Japanese literature in the German book market. These categories will be presented and described in detail before conclusions about the tendencies of reviewing Japanese literature and about what influence these tendencies have on the image of Japanese literature are drawn.

Abstract:Abstract Von Donnersmarck’s feature film has been largely understood against the historical background of the Stasi and its victims in the last years of the GDR, and the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The main cultural frame of reference has been post-Wende cinema. Relying on Aristotle’s and Brecht’s concepts of dramatic representation, this article suggests a vantage point from which to reconsider ‘Das Leben der Anderen’, approaching the film on literary and theatrical rather than cinematic or political grounds. Its specific concern is the intersection of book and screen. Focusing on scenes of reading, this article traces literacy and theatricality, first and foremost through the presence and influence of Bertolt Brecht. Jerska reads at Dreyman’s from the same yellow poetry volume that Wiesler then purloins and reads at home. Wiesler’s reading of Brecht marks the beginning of the end of a vicarious life of surveillance, gives rise to the question of integrity, and spurs a dialogue between self and other. The concentration on the seminal role of texts by (and inspired by) Brecht highlights an examination of reading and friendship, which the film locates at the interface of humanity and literacy, at the crossroads of ethics and aesthetics.

Mixing Pop Art and Political Criticism: Heinz Edelmann’s Artwork for Children

Abstract:Heinz Edelmann (1934-2009), a German illustrator and designer, is probably best known as the art director of the Beatles’ animated film Yellow Submarine (1968). Less well-known are the three picturebooks he illustrated for children, which are influenced by the Pop Art movement. The large-sized picturebooks Maicki Astromaus (1970) and Andromedar SR1 (1970) refer to the science fiction genre and reveal a critical attitude towards the contemporary political and economic situation. Kathrinchen ging spazieren (1973), by contrast, is a picturebook story with nonsensical verses by the East German playwright Peter Hacks and subliminally refers to the causes of consumerism and careless wishes. A comparative analysis of these picturebooks demonstrates that Edelmann’s illustrations in combination with the accompanying texts are significant examples of the political, cultural, and societal upheaval that can be found in German children’s literature of the ‘68’ period.

Abstract:Goethe's classical Iphigenia in Tauris provided an opportunity to stage issues pertinent to the reconciliation of the peoples of the two German states. However, the language of these two peoples developed over the 40‐year existence of the two states in such different ways that the alienation felt towards each other is more poignantly expressed than a common language of reconciliation. The financial difficulties of the performing arts in the five new states of the former GDR are about to reach a breaking point with the planned withdrawal of federal subsidies for theater, subsidies which will have to be assumed by the financially‐strapped states in the Eastern part of Germany. Restructuring will be absolutely necessary, and even with massive reductions in people employed in the theaters, smaller seasonal repertoires, and joint ensembles, the danger of being subsumed by pop culture is very real. Drama needs conflict to function as a social provocation and the context in which GDR dramatists wrote has been eliminated with the unification of the two German states. As evident in Christoph Hein's The Knights of the Round Table, the generational conflicts evident in some of the last plays from the GDR portray an older generation incapable of establishing new ideals. Dramatists working in the East must gain experience in the emerging new social context and discover the language necessary to describe and dramatize the new issues which will strike a nerve in society, causing renewed interest in the performing arts.

Abstract:Hitherto unknown archival material allows a closer look at Carl Schmitt as a theorist of culture and tragedy, and a fuller examination of Heiner Müller's interest in, and debt to, him. The significance of Schmitt's theory of drama for Heiner Müller's Hamletmachine is analyzed against the comparative background of Russian literary Hamletism. Müller's self-conscious intertextualism was a response to, and an extension of, Schmitt's critique of the role of artistic imagination in drama, which is treated here as but an element of his wider post-romantic cultural and social theory.

Abstract:This work is the second volume of a comprehensive ‘trilogy’ aimed at accounting for the theatrical discourse during the communist period. Covering more than a decade, a so-called ‘deceitful spring’ (1965-1977), comes after ‘the fluctuating thaw’ (1956-1964) tackled by volume one and is followed by ‘the blizzard’ (1978-1989) which ends just before the fall of the totalitarian regime in our country. The author’s endeavour is unprecedented, and the comprehensive research conducted on almost five hundred pages ranges from the education in the field to the party’s contribution and the magazines’, not to mention the theatres’ or the openness to the West. A sociological dimension is also envisaged, along with a rhetorical analysis that stirs interest in specialists, reviewers, theatregoers and others related to the world of theatrical performance to enlarge their horizons.

Abstract:The author proposes post-imperial analysis as a new research agenda for the study of (post-)GDR literature and painting. The article models this kind of analysis with respect to works by the authors listed in the title, focusing on the representation/destruction of the Soviet tank as an object embodying imperial sovereignty. More specifically, the author explores a series of scopic scenarios that dramatize the confrontation with Soviet tanks, drawing on Carl Schmitt's 1950s concept of iconographic space for its political theory and tracing the genealogy of this iconographic object, its constitution as aesthetic object, in the work of Soviet artists. Reading the (textual and visual) demolition of the tank as post-imperial gesture, the article studies strategies that either destroy aesthetic conventions or explode the object through a process of de-scription.

Abstract:The reception theory of drama has not given enough attention to in drama theory. So Bertolt Brecht’s critical reception theory should be focused on. In his drama theory,the audience is put up to an unprecedented position. The main aspects of his critical reception theory are: "opposing sympathy" and " critical participation". In his theory,the author and actors are dead. What we find is the subjectivity of audience. The essay argues that Brecht was quite earlier than other advocators of reception aesthetics in advocating the critical participation of audience. In such sense,he was a pioneer of critical reception theory.

Abstract:The article reflects on the issues of European social, political and ethical disintegration by looking at two plays which represent both geographic and mental migration of European citizens. Zinnie Harris’s play dramatizes a journey by an energetic businesswoman from the state of seeming success to the condition of collapse of the entire continent. Masłowska’s drama tells the story of a couple who have lost their geographic but also existential bearings after a prolonged bout of drug abuse and partying. The article aims at presenting the European continent as a space of alienated social and personal experience, as a community of people in permanent exile from both the private space and the public ideologies. The two plays offer a reflection on the condition of pre-Brexit Europe with the power of capturing representative lives of those individuals who have lost the sense of the common cause.

Abstract:In the autumn of 2012, the sculpture The Black Cone by the Spanish artist Santiago di Sierra was placed in front of the Parliament of Iceland, on Reykjavik’s symbolic square Austurvöllur. The Black Cone was intended to commemorate the massive public protests, the so-called ‘pots and pans revolution’ in Iceland 2008–2009 against the politicians held responsible for the country’s financial crash. While the majority of Reykjavik’s city council in 2012 agreed to accept the artist’s donation of the monument, council members were divided on the issue and it did raise controversies.1 Yet, since 2012 the monument has largely vanished from public attention.2 Perhaps its shape – a natural rock with a ridge created by a small black cone – allows it to remain unnoticed or casually overlooked as one of several organic parts of the square. How are we to understand this lack of explicit reactions to di Sierra’s monument? Is it rejection, purposeful ignoring, or simply indifference? At the very least we can say that as by 2016, no one has taken ownership or re-appropriated the monument as a memorial representation for her or his own purposes.3 When in 2012 Christopher Clark published the book The Sleepwalkers. How Europe Went to War in 1914 as yet another attempt to analyze the causes of the outbreak of the First World War, reactions were numerous. Published strategically at the advent of the war’s centenary by a renowned Cambridge historian, The Sleepwalkers was reviewed in newspapers and history journals across Europe, sometimes with acclaim and sometimes with lukewarm appreciation.4 Clark’s account was also included in several scholarly review articles that
