Abstract:The article is devoted to a review of current trends in modern research in Russian and foreign German studies. The purpose of the article is to describe existing trends in Russian and German studies and current research based on the material of the German language. In the article, German studies is understood in its narrow definition, as a subject area whose sphere of interests exclusively includes research in German language and literature. The material for the analysis was scientific articles in leading Russian and German publications, associations of government agencies, as well as publications of Russian and German research organizations. The rationale for this is the significant advances in scientific research of Russian (Soviet) and German Germanists in the twentieth century. During the study, methods of analysis, synthesis and observation were used. The development trends of Russian and German German studies are determined by the cultural, historical, socio-political, and informational features of the development of modern society. Text, corpus and translation are considered as the main sources of promising trends in German studies for the description and interpretation of the facts of the modern German language in diachrony and synchrony. Text models and text types are substantiated from the perspective of modern discursive practices of the German language community (migration discourse, multimodal discourse, political and populist discourse, valeological discourse, etc.). The results of corpus research are considered as an empirical basis for research in German studies and for the strategy of inductive generalization. Research in the field of translation studies is aimed at fixing and systematizing established translation techniques based on innovative digital technologies.

Abstract:Abstract Professor Classen’s electronic book includes eleven essays, published between 2012 and 2022 but not presented in chronological order. The essays appeared in such journals as Literature & Aesthetics, Journal of Humanities, Arts and Social Science , and New Literaria: An International Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies in Humanities . The context in which all the essays were composed is the increasingly disadvantaged position of academic humanities within universities and university curricula. While popular forms of the arts and humanities are generally thriving in America and Europe, the academic study of the humanities has lost favor with the general public as well as with many university administrators, who, increasingly wedded to data-driven decision processes, are inclined to fund faculty positions based solely on quantitative measures (such as number of majors) as opposed to philosophical or discursive arguments. As more and more students (and parents) seek areas of study promising training for specific post-graduation jobs, especially those tied to fields that seek to increase humankind’s power rather than those that explore humanistic meaning , majors such as biology, engineering, and health sciences experience robust growth, while departments of literature, history, languages, and philosophy languish for want of majors. Thus, we witness the disheartening plight of humanities departments just to replace retiring faculty, let alone grow.

Abstract:This essay outlines a program for updating German media studies by reformatting, repartitioning, and potentially rebooting German media theory. As a temporary placeholder, German media studies 2.0 describes current transatlantic research committed to fixing bugs and patching vulnerabilities that emerged from historical encounters between media and critique, ideology and epistemology, and the Frankfurt School and the Kittler Network. To update German media studies in a critical mode, we need to keep defining our concepts and delimiting our disciplines, accounting for the effects of media change on our research methods, and negotiating our field’s complex relations to culture, history, and politics.

Abstract:This article aims to analyze the research trend and hotspots in the field of comparative literature by using the method of bibliometrics. The data is derived from the Web of Science Core Collection Database. The visualization software VOSViewer is utilized to draw keyword co-occurrence knowledge graph. R programming language is employed to analyze the quantity of publications, core journals, highly cited papers, the most contributing authors, and keyword word cloud. The results indicate that ever since 1975, this study field has entered a period of rapid development; top journals with most publications are mainly from France, the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Most of the highly cited articles have emerged in the recent two decades, and quite a few of them inherit the academic tradition of adopting a geographic perspective. The keyword word cloud and the keyword co-ocurrence knowledge mapping reveal that comparative literature study is shifting its focus from literary history and intertextuality to identity, culture, literary theory and world literature. The recent reserch hotspots in this field are mainly identity, culture, world literature, literary theory, Latin American literature, appropriation, genre, theatre, ethics and digital humanities, etc.

Abstract:Comparative literature is one of the academic disciplines belonging to the humanities, which has a history of over 100 years. It is also a sub-discipline under the subject category of literary studies in general although it does cover almost all the aspects of literary studies, such as literary history, literary theory, and literary criticism. Comparative literature is characterized by the study of two or more literatures crossing the boundary of languages, nations, religious beliefs, disciplines, and cultural traditions by both dealing with the factual influence of one literature on another and others and comparing and analysing two or more literary phenomena which do not necessarily have any factual relations but which could be observed in a comparative and parallel way. In the contemporary era, comparative literature, influenced by the process of globalization, merges more or less with cultural studies. Its earliest phase is that of world literature, which in the age of globalization has become one of the most cutting-edge theoretical topics. Having close relations with translation studies, comparative literature also interacts with translation studies since it deals with two or more than two languages.

Abstract:Although the importance and urgency of the corporate governance debate has increased in media, public and scientific literature after the financial crisis, there is no systematic and holistic approach to the phenomenon of corporate governance and the associated economic research in the Germanspeaking countries. Due to this, the literature on corporate governance research in the Germanspeaking area is examined by means of bibliometric methods and social network analysis in order to identify thematic clusters and the most influential documents and authors. Based on a co-citation analysis of over 10,000 references cited in 267 source documents, a map is constructed that depicts the landscape of corporate governance research in German-speaking countries. The analysis identifies a large body of accumulated corporate governance research, which is mostly based on the theoretical work from English-speaking scholars. Our findings and interpretations allow a new view on the German corporate governance research and on the particular understanding of corporate governance in the German-speaking research community. Abstract:“Digital Humanities and Its Application in the Study of Literature and Culture” examines the relationship between comparative literary and cultural studies, systems theory and model building, and recent work in digital humanities. Areas of specific application include the topology of German literature, modernist poetics in China, Japan, and the United States, and the geography of nineteenth-century fiction, as well as a range of associated computational methods. Wilkens argues that computational work represents a unique opportunity for comparatists interested in large-scale cultural analysis and that digital humanities would benefit from increased participation by comparatists.

Abstract:In this study, publications on German as a foreign language in the Web of Science (WOS) database were analyzed by bibliometric method. The data obtained allowed to make a general case evaluation in the field of German as a foreign language. Accordingly, it was determined that the articles were prominent among the publications types on the related subject in the WOS database. German and English as the language of publication, America and Germany among the countries of publication, linguistics and educational sciences in terms of research areas, L.M. Kutch as the most productive author draw attention. The year with the highest number of publications is 2015, and the year with the highest number of citations is 2021. In addition, the article with the highest number of citations is G. Kasper's article entitled "Participant orientations in German conversation-for-learning" published in the “Modern Language journal” in 2004. Further, network maps were created by using the VOSviewer program to visualize bibliometric relationships in the study. In the clusters in the first of these maps, it was seen that “German as a foreign language”, “multilingualism”, “foreign language teaching”, “German”, “teaching German as a foreign language” were frequently repeated among the keywords of the publications selected as data. Following this, co-citation network map of the journals was created. Journals with the highest total link strength in the clusters of this map are “Modern Language Journal”, “Language Learning”, “Bilingualism: Language and Cognition”, “Language Testing”, “Foreign Language Annals” and “Deutsch als Fremdsprache”. Finally, it was understood that the authors with the highest total link strength in the clusters included in co-citation network map of authors are R. Ellis, Z. Dornyei, G. Neuner, C. Altmayer, T. Heift, K. Ehlich and N.C. Premawardhena.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This article (part one of two) surveys Dickens scholarship and adjacent work with a special emphasis on Dickens Quarterly. The author’s approach was inspired by the alternating micro- and macro- method of Robert Douglas-Fairhurst’s Turning Point 1851, and the personal approach of Annette Federico’s But For You, Dear Stranger (My Reading) and Nick Hornby’s Prince and Dickens: A Particular Kind of Genius. The article identifies these key trends: (1) A turn towards artists and scholars’ personal and autobiographical responses to Dickens’s work/life; (2) a reckoning with race and empire, especially how colonial enterprises are felt in London and in novels’ relationships; (3) places and spaces, including how buildings can communicate history or hold meaning; (4) charges of anti-Semitism and treatment of Jews; (5) intense, narrowly focused scholarship on topics like etymology, fungi, rot, historical happenings, both major (Crystal Palace) or minor (a Duke’s balloon trip).

Abstract:Memory Studies is an international and interdisciplinary field of research that has grown significantly over the past decades (cf. Gudehus 2010, 1; Hoskins et al. 2008, 5). Remembering and forgetting are still intriguing subjects for many scholars and scientists, as is shown by the journal ›Memory Studies‹ (since 2008) and the ›Memory Studies Association‹ (www.memorystudiesassociation.org, since 2017) with its regular symposia and diverse programs, as well as by the ›Frankfurt Memory Studies Platform‹ (www. memorystudies-frankfurt.com, since 2011). As interdisciplinary as the field is, as heterogeneous are the objects of study. Memorials, paintings, installations, and what interests us in particular: literature, are being studied for their potential to represent the past in the present. Finding a common language, however, has been a challenge, as a brief look at research developments in recent years shows: in 2008/2009, scholars from all over the world still wondered if a »unified field« was possible at all (Brown et al. 2009, 120), stating repeatedly that Memory Studies would not exist »as a proper discipline« (Roedinger/Wertsch 2008, 19) until appropriate and universally applicable methods and theories were developed. Since then, researchers have been striving for an interdisciplinary understanding of Memory Studies (e. g. Roedinger/Dudai/Fitzpatrick 2007; Erll/Nünning 2010; Olick/Vinitzky-Seroussi/Levy 2011; Kattago 2015; Tota/Hagen 2016). Eleven years ago, Astrid Erll wondered if there would be »a third phase of memory studies« (Erll 2011, 4 sq.). Based on her critique of methodology, new perspectives and methods have indeed been established in Memory Studies in recent years, especially approaches that bring to the fore the entanglement of different acts of remembering (cf. Feindt et al. 2014, 24). In a more recent stocktaking from 2017, Olick, Sierp and Wüstenberg summarized developments in the field with regard to these appeals and stated: »there is by now a large collection of common terms, concepts, theories, and referents that constitute the making of a very significant scholarly field with a vibrant present and future« (Olick/Sierp/Wüstenberg 2017, 491). One could not only ask why a special issue about literature and memory for the ›Journal of Literary Theory‹ is a necessary project – we were also asked this, both by the editors and some of the contributors. The fact that this issue is being published speaks for a desideratum that still exists, namely to take the literary text seriously as an object of transdisciplinary research. In our view the potential of literary theory for a more systematic approach to Memory Studies has not yet been fully realized. Even when analyzing texts in the context of Memory Studies with its numerous methodological obligations, for example with regard to Cultural Memory Studies, a literary theory should always be at least a reference theory (dt. »Bezugstheorie«, Köppe/Winko/Jannidis 2013, 286 sq.). The contributions to this issue do take the text seriously and in doing so shed new light on existing approaches and concepts in Memory Studies. Research within Literary Memory Studies often draws on theories of other disciplines. The articles in this volume are no exception: for instance, Ana de Almeida and Christian Wimplinger show how desire for revolutions from the past affects narration, using Bini Adamczak's term ›desire‹, which in turn builds on Freud's psychoanalytical research on fetishism (cf. Adamczak 2017). Claudia Mueller-Greene uses the concept of liminality, established in Ethnology and Anthropology, as a new perspective to better understand the ambiguous and creative aspects of memory and of literary texts dealing with memory. Addressing literature as well as narratives in a wider sense, literary theories are useful instruments for the ›Memory Studies Project‹ as a whole. »Cultural memory is based on communication through media« (Erll 2008, 389), which is why theories from the field of language, literature and media are especially suitable. De Almeida/Wimplinger, for example, analyze the temporal representation in narratives of social upheaval, trying to grasp them as vehicles for transgenerational memory transfer. Mueller-Greene examines narrative devices such as metaphors and unreliable narration as well as structural multi-perspectivity through intertextual and intercultural references and shows how these devices stage the liminal aspects of memory. In this introduction, we want to (1) once again deal decisively but concisely with the role of literature as a research object for Memory Studies. Contemporary Memory Studies mostly focus on relational, dialogical, and entangled concepts of memory. Abstract:In a considerable degree the research quality of foreign literature is closely related to the researcher's visions and applied theories and methods.During our country's new period studies of foreign literature have achieved outstanding results in exploring external social historical-cultural conditions of literary works and writers' thoughts,feelings and experiences.However,there is almost a blank in expounding those works' internal forms and structures.According to Liu Xie,there is unchangeableness in changes of literary forms or there are changes in unchangeableness.Such a structural theory inspires us to combine structuralist explorations of universality with post-structuralist explorations of changeableness,which may be a scientific and effective approach.

Abstract:The aim of this paper is to provide a review of articles reporting on research related to the linguistic landscape as applied to foreign language education, with a focus on the conceptualisation of the linguistic landscape, main themes, and research methods and distribution across years, languages taught and countries of research. The search for relevant articles published between 2003–2023 was conducted in databases: Web of Science, ERIC, MLA, and Scopus. The search yielded a total sample of 20 articles. The presentation of the main results of the review is followed by suggestions of topics for further research and reviews of a broader scope.

Abstract:The presented qualitative content analysis in this paper refers to the aspirations of modern didactics of foreign literature towards discursive, multimedia and constructive approaches to literary texts. The criteria for the selection of literary texts in teaching point to the fact that the novel ʻBricks and Mortarʼ by Clemens Meyer is an adequate choice for university literature teaching, both for the analysis of the discourse and for achieving the set teaching goals. The main figures in the novel belong to the milieu of prostitution, shown both from the point of view of women and from the point of view of pimps. The internal monologues, the flow of thoughts and the dizzying change of the narrative perspective enable a detailed psychological picture of the characters and the impossibility of dividing them into ʻgoodʼ and ʻevilʼ. What is ʻevilʼ is woven into modern society where the only God is – money. The applied qualitative methodology deals with a case study, which is composed by fourth year students of German Studies at the Faculty of Philology and Arts of the University of Kragujevac. The presented classes were held in the summer semester of the academic year 2021/2022. The goals of the class are strengthening the existing literary competences and acquiring new literary competences, especially the competence of independent reading, independent individual understanding of the text, independent decision-making about the literary value of the literary text and conscious acceptance of the ambiguity of the text. Special attention is drawn to the conscious mastery of discursive comments. The main discourses of the novel are sex, power, prostitution and money. These topcis were broken down by students into subtopics, presented in multimedia presentations. In the conversation after (Anschlussgespräch), an attempt was made to transfer the fictitious world of the book to the so-called ʻrealʼ world that surrounds us. The respondents showed a high level of literary and life knowledge at their disposal. It is believed that mastering the aforementioned competencies is essential for future German as a foreign language teachers. It enables them not only to independently choose literary texts, goals and methods in their own teaching, but also to teach and transfer discursive competences to their students, thereby educating them in a humanistic and democratic spirit.

Abstract:This article outlines some of the findings of a project funded by the German Research Association which conducted an analysis of six leading journals of education in Germany and England. All articles published in these journals between 2001 and 2009 were analysed according to thematic foci, methodological approaches and characteristics of authors. The findings of this analysis demonstrate that there are clear differences and similarities in publication patters between different journals and countries and that some of these patterns have changed substantially over time. The comparative perspective used for the analysis results in conclusions regarding nation-specific trajectories of the discourse and research in the area of education.
