Abstract:The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves the evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectra of Hermitian forms graphs.

Abstract:For the past decades, linear codes with few weights have been widely studied, since they have applications in space communications, data storage and cryptography. In this paper, a class of binary linear codes is constructed and their weight distribution is determined. Results show that they are at most 4-weight linear codes. Additionally, these codes can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.

Abstract:Linear codes with a few weights can be applied to communication, consumer electronics and data storage system. In addition, the weight hierarchy of linear codes has many applications such as on the type II wire-tap channel, dealing with $t$-resilient functions and trellis or branch complexity of linear codes and so on. In this paper, we first present a formula for computing the weight hierarchies of linear codes constructed by the generalized method of defining sets. Then, we construct two classes of binary linear codes with a few weights and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies completely. Some codes of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:Studying the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes is a significant research area within coding theory, as it provides valuable structural information about the codes and plays a crucial role in determining their performance in various applications. However, determining the generalized Hamming weights of linear codes, particularly their weight hierarchy, is generally a challenging task. In this paper, we focus on investigating the generalized Hamming weights of three classes of linear codes over finite fields. These codes are constructed by different defining sets. By analysing the intersections between the definition sets and the duals of all $r$-dimensional subspaces, we get the inequalities on the sizes of these intersections. Then constructing subspaces that reach the upper bounds of these inequalities, we successfully determine the complete weight hierarchies of these codes.

Abstract:In this paper, based on the theory of defining sets, two classes of five-weight or six-weight linear codes over Fp are constructed. The weight distributions of the linear codes are determined by means of Weil sums and a new type of exponential sums. In some case, there is an almost optimal code with respect to Griesmer bound, which is also an optimal one according to the online code table.

Abstract:The structure of a linear block code is pivotal in defining fundamental properties, particularly weight distribution, and code design. In this study, we characterize the Type II structure of polar codewords with weights less than twice the minimum weight $w_{min}$, utilizing the lower triangular affine (LTA) transform. We present a closed-form formula for their enumeration. Leveraging this structure and additionally characterizing the structure of weight $2w_{min}$, we ascertain the complete weight distribution of low-rate and, through the utilization of dual codes properties, high-rate polar codes, subcodes of Reed--Muller (RM) codes, and RMxPolar codes. Furthermore, we introduce a partial order based on the weight distribution and briefly explore its properties and applications in code construction and analysis.

Abstract:Determining the weight distribution of all Reed-Muller codes is a huge and exciting problem that has been around since the sixties. Some progress has been made very recently, but we are still far from a solution. In this paper, we addressed the subproblem of determining as many codeword weights as possible in Reed-Muller codes of any lengths and any orders, which is decisive for determining their weight spectra (i.e., the lists of all possible weights in these codes). New approaches seem necessary for both the main problem and the subproblem. We first studied the difficulties and the limits of the approach, which consisted of using the usual primary and secondary constructions of Boolean functions for the purpose of determining as many weights as possible in Reed-Muller codes. We then introduced a way, different from the usual constructions, to generate Boolean functions in $ n $ variables having an algebraic degree bounded from above, without any restriction on $ n $, and whose Hamming weights can be determined. This provided weights in Reed-Muller codes of any lengths $ 2^n $ and any orders, allowing us to reach potentially new values in the weight spectra of Reed-Muller codes (as we illustrate with all Reed-Muller codes of lengths up to $ 2^{21} $), with the related codewords being given with their supports and their algebraic normal forms being mathematically derived.

Abstract:The linear codes with a few weights have been applied widely in combinatorial designs, secret sharing, association schemes, authentication codes and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we first correct an erroneous result about the exponential sum $\sum_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{2^{e}}}\chi_1\left(ax^{2^{\alpha}+1}+bx\right).$ Then, using the above exponential sum, we construct several families of binary linear codes of $3$-weight and determine their weight distributions. Moreover, Most of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:Determining the weight distribution of a code is an old and fundamental topic in coding theory that has been thoroughly studied. In 1977, Helleseth, Kløve, and Mykkeltveit presented a weight enumerator polynomial of the lifted code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^\ell}$ of a $q$-ary linear code with significant combinatorial properties, which can determine the support weight distribution of this linear code. The Solomon-Stiffler codes are a family of famous Griesmer codes, which were proposed by Solomon and Stiffler in 1965. In this paper, we determine the weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes using some combinatorial properties of subspaces. As a result, we determine the support weight distributions of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes. In particular, we determine the weight hierarchies of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes.

Abstract:We compute the weight distribution of the ${\mathcal R} (4,9)$ by combining the approach described in D. V. Sarwate's Ph.D. thesis from 1973 with knowledge on the affine equivalence classification of Boolean functions. To solve this problem posed, e.g., in the MacWilliams and Sloane book [p. 447], we apply a refined approach based on the classification of Boolean quartic forms in $8$ variables due to Ph. Langevin and G. Leander, and recent results on the classification of the quotient space ${\mathcal R} (4,7)/{\mathcal R} (2,7)$ due to V. Gillot and Ph. Langevin.

Abstract:In this paper, we discuss the generalized Hamming weights of a class of linear codes associated with non-degenerate quadratic forms. In order to do so, we study the quadratic forms over subspaces of finite field and obtain some interesting results about subspaces and their dual spaces. On this basis, we solve all the generalized Hamming weights of these linear codes.

Abstract:Recently, linear codes with few weights have been constructed through defining sets. Results show that some optimal codes can be obtained if the defining sets were well chosen. In this paper, we investigate the linear codes constructed from the absolute trace function. It is shown that the constructed codes are binary linear codes with three weights. The dual codes of the proposed linear codes are also studied and proved to be optimal or almost optimal.
