Abstract:Determining the weight distribution of all Reed-Muller codes is a huge and exciting problem that has been around since the sixties. Some progress has been made very recently, but we are still far from a solution. In this paper, we addressed the subproblem of determining as many codeword weights as possible in Reed-Muller codes of any lengths and any orders, which is decisive for determining their weight spectra (i.e., the lists of all possible weights in these codes). New approaches seem necessary for both the main problem and the subproblem. We first studied the difficulties and the limits of the approach, which consisted of using the usual primary and secondary constructions of Boolean functions for the purpose of determining as many weights as possible in Reed-Muller codes. We then introduced a way, different from the usual constructions, to generate Boolean functions in $ n $ variables having an algebraic degree bounded from above, without any restriction on $ n $, and whose Hamming weights can be determined. This provided weights in Reed-Muller codes of any lengths $ 2^n $ and any orders, allowing us to reach potentially new values in the weight spectra of Reed-Muller codes (as we illustrate with all Reed-Muller codes of lengths up to $ 2^{21} $), with the related codewords being given with their supports and their algebraic normal forms being mathematically derived.

Abstract:We determine the weight spectra of the Reed-Muller codes $RM(m-3,m)$ for $m\ge 6$ and $RM(m-4,m)$ for $m\ge 8$. The technique used is induction on $m$, using that the sum of two weights in $RM(r-1,m-1)$ is a weight in $RM(r,m)$, and using the characterization by Kasami and Tokura of the weights in $RM(r,m)$ that lie between its minimum distance $2^{m-r}$ and the double of this minimum distance. We also derive the weights of $RM(3,8),\,RM(4,9),$ by the same technique. We conclude with a conjecture on the weights of $RM(m-c,m)$, where $c$ is fixed and $m$ is large enough.

Abstract:The weight spectra of the Reed-Muller codes $RM(r,m)$ were unknown for $r=3,...,m-5$. In IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 2024, Carlet determined the weight spectrum of $RM(m-5,m)$ for $m\ge10$ using the Maiorana-McFarland construction, where the result was tried to be extended to $RM(m-6,m)$, but many problems occurred and much work needed to be done. In this paper, we propose a novel way of constructing Reed--Muller codewords and determine the weight spectrum of $RM(m-6,m)$ for $m\ge12$, which gives a positive answer to an open question on the weight spectrum of $RM(m-c,m)$ for $c=6$. Moreover, we put forward a conjecture and verify it for some cases. If the conjecture is true, then that open question can be completely solved.

Abstract:We compute the weight distribution of the ${\mathcal R} (4,9)$ by combining the approach described in D. V. Sarwate's Ph.D. thesis from 1973 with knowledge on the affine equivalence classification of Boolean functions. To solve this problem posed, e.g., in the MacWilliams and Sloane book [p. 447], we apply a refined approach based on the classification of Boolean quartic forms in $8$ variables due to Ph. Langevin and G. Leander, and recent results on the classification of the quotient space ${\mathcal R} (4,7)/{\mathcal R} (2,7)$ due to V. Gillot and Ph. Langevin.

Remarks on second and third weights of Projective Reed-Muller codes

Abstract:Determining the weight distributions of the projective Reed-Muller codes is a very hard problem and has been studied extensively in the literature. In this article, we provide an alternative proof of the second weight of the projective Reed-Muller codes $\PRM (d, m)$ where $m \ge 3$ and $3 \le d \le \frac{q+3}{2}$. We show that the second weight is attained by codewords that correspond to hypersurfaces containing a hyperplane under the hypothesis on $d$. Furthermore, we compute the second weight of $\PRM (d, 2)$ for $3 \le d \le q-1$. Furthermore, we give an upper bound for the third weight of $\PRM(d, 2)$.

Abstract:The weight spectra (i.e. the lists of all possible weights) of the Reed-Muller codes , of length and order , are unknown for (and large enough). Those of and have been determined very recently (but not the weight distributions, giving the number of codewords of each weight, which seem out of reach). We determine the weight spectrum of for every . We proceed by first determining the weights in . To do this, we construct functions whose weights are in the set , and functions whose weights are all the integers between 94 and that are congruent with 2 modulo 4 (those weights that are divisible by 4 are easier to determine and they are indeed known). This allows us to determine completely the weight spectrum, thanks to the well-known result due to Kasami, Tokura and Azumi, which precisely determines those codeword weights in Reed-Muller codes which lie between the minimum distance and 2.5 times , and thanks to the fact the weight spectrum is symmetric with respect to 29. Then we use this particular weight spectrum for determining that of , by an induction on . We check that a recent conjecture (in which we correct a misprint) on the weight spectrum of is verified for , and we study the difficulties of trying to extend the results to .

Abstract:The determination of weight distribution of cyclic codes involves the evaluation of Gauss sums and exponential sums. Despite some cases where a neat expression is available, the computation is generally rather complicated. In this note, we determine the weight distribution of a class of reducible cyclic codes whose dual codes may have arbitrarily many zeros. This goal is achieved by building an unexpected connection between the corresponding exponential sums and the spectra of Hermitian forms graphs.

Abstract:We determine the higher weight spectra of $q$-ary Reed-Muller codes $C_q=RM_q(2,2)$ for all prime powers $q$. This is equivalent to finding the usual weight distributions of all extension codes of $C_q$ over every field extension of $F_q$ of finite degree. To obtain our results we will utilize well-known connections between these weights and properties of the Stanley-Reisner rings of a series of matroids associated to each code $C_q$. In the process, we are able to explicitly determine all the graded Betti numbers of matroids associated to $C_q$ and its elongations.

Abstract:It is well-known that Reed-Solomon codes and extended Reed-Solomon codes are two special classes of MDS codes with wide applications in practice. The complete weight enumerators of these codes are very important for determining the capability of both error-detection and error-correction. In this paper, for any positive integer $m$ and prime $p$, basing on the character sums, we determine the complete weight enumerators of the Reed-Solomon code and the extended Reed-Solomon code with dimension $k$ $(k=2,3)$ over $\mathbb{F}_{p^m}$, explictly, which are generalizations of the corresponding results in \cite{BK91,K04}.
Estimating the Weight Enumerators of Reed-Muller Codes via Sampling

Abstract:This paper develops an algorithmic approach for obtaining estimates of the weight enumerators of Reed-Muller (RM) codes. Our algorithm is based on a technique for estimating the partition functions of spin systems, which in turn employs a sampler that produces codewords according to a suitably defined Gibbs distribution. We apply our method to moderate-blocklength RM codes and derive approximate values of their weight enumerators. We observe that the rates of the weight enumerator estimates returned by our method are close to the true rates when these rates are either known or computable by brute-force search; in other cases, our computations provide provably robust estimates. As a byproduct, our sampling algorithm also allows us to obtain estimates of the weight spectra of RM codes. We illustrate our methods by providing estimates of the hitherto unknown weight enumerators of the RM$(11,5)$ code and the exact weight spectra of the RM$(10,3)$ and RM$(10,4)$ codes.

Abstract:The separating redundancy is an important property in the analysis of the error-and-erasure decoding of a linear block code. In this work, we investigate the separating redundancy of the duals of first-order generalized Reed-Muller (GRM) codes, a class of nonbinary linear block codes that have nice algebraic properties. The dual of a first-order GRM code can be specified by two positive integers m and q and denoted by R (m, q), where q is the power of a prime number and q not equal 2. We determine the first separating redundancy value of R (m, q) for any m and q. We also determine the second separating redundancy values of R (m, q) for any q and m = 1 and 2. For m >= 3, we set up a binary integer linear programming problem, the optimum of which gives a lower bound on the second separating redundancy of R (m, q).

Abstract:Linear codes with a few weights can be applied to communication, consumer electronics and data storage system. In addition, the weight hierarchy of linear codes has many applications such as on the type II wire-tap channel, dealing with $t$-resilient functions and trellis or branch complexity of linear codes and so on. In this paper, we first present a formula for computing the weight hierarchies of linear codes constructed by the generalized method of defining sets. Then, we construct two classes of binary linear codes with a few weights and determine their weight distributions and weight hierarchies completely. Some codes of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.

Abstract:The number of low-weight codewords is critical to the performance of error-correcting codes. In 1970, Kasami and Tokura characterized the codewords of Reed-Muller (RM) codes whose weights are less than $2w_{\min}$, where $w_{\min}$ represents the minimum weight. In this paper, we extend their results to decreasing polar codes. We present the closed-form expressions for the number of codewords in decreasing polar codes with weights less than $2w_{\min}$. Moreover, the proposed enumeration algorithm runs in polynomial time with respect to the code length.

Abstract:The average weight distribution of a regular low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensemble over a finite field is thoroughly analyzed. In particular, a precise asymptotic approximation of the average weight distribution is derived for the small-weight case, and a series of fundamental qualitative properties of the asymptotic growth rate of the average weight distribution are proved. Based on this analysis, a general result, including all previous results as special cases, is established for the minimum distance of individual codes in a regular LDPC code ensemble.

Abstract:The linear codes with a few weights have been applied widely in combinatorial designs, secret sharing, association schemes, authentication codes and strongly regular graphs. In this paper, we first correct an erroneous result about the exponential sum $\sum_{x\in \mathbb{F}_{2^{e}}}\chi_1\left(ax^{2^{\alpha}+1}+bx\right).$ Then, using the above exponential sum, we construct several families of binary linear codes of $3$-weight and determine their weight distributions. Moreover, Most of them can be used in secret sharing schemes.
