Abstract:Social media have transformed the Web into an interactive sharing platform where users upload data and media, comment on, and share this content within their social circles. Each content item is associated with an abundance of metadata and related information such as location, tags, comments, favorites and mood indicators, access logs, and so on. At the same time, all this information is implicitly or explicitly interconnected based on various properties such as social links among users, groups, communities, and sharing patterns. These properties transform social media into data sources of an extremely dynamic nature that reflect topics of interests, events, and the evolution of community opinion and focus. Social media processing offers a unique opportunity to structure and extract information and to benefit multiple areas ranging from computer vision to psychology and marketing. The objective of this special section is to provide an overview of the current research in emerging topics related to applications where social media can act as sensors of real-life phenomena and case studies that reveal valuable insights usually not possible with existing, limited, controlled, and laboratory-based datasets.

Abstract:There are more than a trillion sensors in the world today and according to some estimates there will be about 50 trillion cameras worldwide within the next 5 years, all collecting data either sporadically or around the clock. With such explosive growth of available data and computing resources, recent advances in machine learning and data analytics have yielded transformative results across diverse scientific disciplines, including image recognition, natural language processing, cognitive science, and genomics. However, in many engineering applications, quality and error-free data is not easy to obtain, e.g., for system dynamics characterized by bifurcations and instabilities, hysteresis, delayed responses, and often irreversible responses. Admittedly, as in all everyday applications, in engineering problems, the volume of data has increased substantially compared to even a decade ago but analyzing big data is expensive and time-consuming. Data-driven methods, which have been enabled in the past decade by the availability of sensors, data storage, and computational resources, are taking center stage across many disciplines (physical and information) of science. We now have highly scalable solutions for problems in object detection and recognition, machine translation, text-to-speech conversion, recommender systems, and information retrieval. All of these solutions attain state-of-the-art performance when trained with large amounts of data. However, purely data-driven approaches for machine learning present difficulties when the data is scarce and of variable fidelity relative to the complexity of the system. The vast majority of state-of-the art machine learning techniques (e.g., deep neural nets, convnets, RNNs, etc.) are lacking robustness and fail to provide any guarantees of convergence or quantify the error/uncertainty associated with their predictions. Hence, the ability to learn in a sample-efficient manner is a necessity in these data-limited domains. Less well understood is how to leverage the underlying physical laws and/or governing equations to extract patterns from small data generated from highly complex systems.

Abstract:Introduction: Advances in machine vision and mobile electronics will be accelerated by the creation of sophisticated optoelectronic vision sensors that allow for sophisticated picture recognition of visual information and data pre-processing. Several new types of vision sensors have been devised in the last decade to solve these drawbacks, one of which is neuromorphic vision sensors, which have exciting qualities such as high temporal resolution, broad dynamic range, and low energy consumption. Neuromorphic sensors are inspired by the working principles of biological sensory neurons and would be useful in telemedicine, health surveillance, security monitoring, automatic driving, intelligent robots, and other applications of the Internet of Things. Methods: This paper provides a comprehensive review of various state-of-the-art AI vision sensors and frameworks. Results: The fundamental signal processing techniques deployed and the associated challenges were discussed. Discussion: Finally, the role of vision sensors in computer vision is also discussed.

Abstract:This paper presents an overview of the state of the art of three different fields with the shared characteristics of making use of a network of sensors, with the possible application of computer vision, signal processing, and machine learning algorithms. Namely, the paper first reports the state of the art and possible future directions for Intelligent Video Surveillance (IVS) applications, by recaping the history of the field in terms of hardware and algorithmic progresses. Then, the existing technologies of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are compared and described. Their applications to human activity recognition (HAR), both from a single or multiple sensors perspectives, are described and classified, followed by the current research trends and challenges. Abstract:Over the last few years, the computer vision has a huge impact in the field of information technology. The foundation for computer vision is laid by image processing. Digital Image Processing is one of the vast area of research; with three indispensable aspects as; Image De-noising, Image Compression & Image Security; with multiple applications in the field of automotive, medical, space, security systems, military & many more. This survey paper includes the evolutionary analysis of various image de-nosing techniques such as Median filtering, Pixel similarity weighted frame averaging, Gaussian filtering, Bilateral filtering, Anisotropic diffusion; that are used for betterment of system performance in terms of noise suppression, edge preservation, texture detection, Operating frequency, PSNR & many more. Moreover, the paper also includes the evolutionary analysis of multiple image compression techniques based on DCT, DWT, fractal image compression & neural network. Finally, the various image security techniques are analyzed. From the study of various literatures on image processing, it is found that combine model of image processing with all the three stages including image de-noising followed by image compression & image security is not yet discussed.

Abstract:Sensors suitable for wearable devices have many special characteristics compared to other sensors, such as stability, sensitivity, sensor volume, biocompatibility, etc. With the development of wearable technology, amazing wearable sensors have attracted a lot of attention, and some researchers have done a large number of technology explorations and reviews. However, previous surveys generally concerned a specified application and comprehensively reviewed the computing techniques for the signals required by this application, as well as how computing can promote data processing. There is a gap in the opposite direction, i.e., the fundamental data source actively stimulates application rather than from the application to the data, and computing promotes the acquisition of data rather than data processing. To fill this gap, starting with different parts of the body as the source of signal, the fundamental data sources that can be obtained and detected are explored by combining the three sensing principles, as well as discussing and analyzing the existing and potential applications of machine learning in simplifying sensor designs and the fabrication of sensors.

Abstract:Technological advancements in electronic storage have been trending for cloud computing. The revolution of this computer technology with machine learning and artificial intelligence has created prodigious platforms to the various disciplines of science and technology. Civil engineering is the oldest discipline, and due to the never-ending demand of this domain, it is rapidly adapting to newer computer techniques like image processing, deep learning, big data analysis, neural networks, building information modeling (BIM), unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) system, digital image correlation (DIC), and many more. In the current paper, we portrayed the primary research and achievements of AI and image processing applications in the civil domain. The paper is divided in two parts. The first part provides analysis of existing methods along with examples relevant to the civil domain where it is incorporated. The second part elaborates scientometric study constituting 605 documents (Science Direct database) published in the last two decades. The bibliometrics are further used for producing analytical frameworks based on publications, citations, top journals, top institutions, and funding sources. This study serves as a guide for readers to identify research gaps and use the review for potential future study.
