Abstract:Synthetic hydrocarbon fuel, derived from renewable energy and captured carbon dioxide from flue gas and/or ambient air, can close its carbon cycle and is an important approach to sustainable energy. In this study, the thermodynamic performance of a co-electrolysis process for producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide from water and captured CO2 is investigated, based on current carbon capture and high-temperature electrolysis technologies. The exergy analysis is useful because it can reveal the energy losses due to irreversibilities and indicate possibilities for improvement of a process. Fuel synthesis systems integrated with or separated from different carbon capture technologies were evaluated and the analysis results have indicated that compared to the energy/exergy consumed by electrolysis, the energy/exergy penalty from CO2 capture is insignificant. The thermodynamic efficiency of fuel synthesis could be increased by developing fuel generation technologies with lower electricity requirements, especially when using solar and nuclear energy.

Abstract:Direct Air Capture (DAC) is a promising technology to fight climate change by capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. For DAC to be a negative emissions technology, the captured CO2 must be removed permanently, but can also be used as a net-zero technology to produce sustainable chemicals, fuels or other materials. This review presents a comprehensive survey of recent advancements, challenges, and potential applications of DAC technology, with an emphasis on the recent rapid increase in the number of DAC developers, the majority of them being founded in the past 4 years. Through pilot projects and recent commercial deployments, several DAC companies have made significant advances and demonstrated their scalability. Cost and energy efficiency remain significant impediments to the wide deployment of DAC. Integration with emission-free energy sources and utilization of waste heat are being researched to boost the total energy efficiency of DAC systems. Further research of electrochemical technologies for regeneration or direct capture are needed, as well as the development of new, modified, or hybrid adsorbents for improved capture efficiencies. Moreover, favorable regulations and financial incentives are crucial for enhancing the viability of DAC projects and will need to substantially increase if Paris Agreement goals are to be achieved.

Re-carbon, up-carbon, de-carbon: Plasma-electrified roll-to-roll cleaner production of vertical graphenes and syngas from greenhouse gas mixes

Abstract:Conversion of CO2 and CH4 greenhouse gases (GHGs) into high-value products using cleaner, sustainable, and renewable-energy-electrified processes is a critical step towards the ultimate decarbonization of our economy and society. Here, we demonstrate an industry-relevant, scalable, plasma-electrified roll-to-roll process to produce vertical graphenes (VGs) for energy storage and syngas from the GHG feedstock with a one-round conversion efficiency of similar to 80%. The growth temperature of VGs from an appropriate mixture of CO2 and CH4 is reduced from the expected 700 degrees C to only 300 degrees C due to the effective dissociation of CH4 caused by reactive plasma-generated oxygen-containing species. A new pilot-scale process is developed to fabricate highly-branched VGs from CH4 + CO2 gas mixture on a large area (10 x 100 cm(2)) nickel foil under plasmas generated by a roll-toroll linear microwave antenna. The analysis of gaseous products and carbon mass flow reveals that most of the GHG mix is effectively converted into the high-value syngas (CO and H-2). Our results demonstrate the integrated re-carbon (re-use of GHGs), up-carbon (conversion of GHG into high-value carbon-based products, HVCBPs), and de-carbon (using the electrification to reduce process-related carbon emissions while producing HVCBPs for clean energy storage) approach that is environmentally benign, scalable, and industry-relevant. Widespread adoption of similar re-carbon - up-carbon - de-carbon process cycles at industry-relevant scales will significantly enhance the production of active nanocarbon materials for diverse applications, while contributing to the achievement of the ultimate zero-carbon-emissions global targets.

Abstract:Carbon capture and use may provide motivation for the global problem of mitigating global warming from substantial industrial emitters. Captured CO2 may be transformed into a range of products such as methanol as renewable energy sources. Polymers, cement, and heterogeneous catalysts for varying chemical synthesis are examples of commercial goods. Because some of these components may be converted into power, CO2 is a feedstock and excellent energy transporter. By employing collected CO2 from the atmosphere as the primary hydrocarbon source, a carbon-neutral fuel may be created. The fuel is subsequently burned, and CO2 is released into the atmosphere like a byproduct of the combustion process. There is no net carbon dioxide emitted or withdrawn from the environment during this process, hence the name carbon-neutral fuel. In a world with net-zero CO2 emissions, the anthroposphere will have attained its carbon hold-up capacity in response to a particular global average temperature increase, such as 1.5 °C. As a result, each carbon atom removed from the subsurface (lithosphere) must be returned to it, or it will be expelled into the atmosphere. CO2 removal technologies, such as biofuels with carbon sequestration and direct air capture, will be required to lower the high CO2 concentration in the atmosphere if the Paris Agreement’s ambitious climate targets are to be realized. In a carbon-neutral scenario, CO2 consumption with renewable energy is expected to contribute to the displacement of fossil fuels. This article includes a conceptual study and an evaluation of fuel technology that enables a carbon-neutral chemical industry in a net-zero-CO2-emissions environment. These are based on the use of collected CO2 as a feedstock in novel chemical processes, along with “green” hydrogen, or on the use of biomass. It will also shed light on innovative methods of green transformation and getting sustainable, environmentally friendly energy.

Abstract:Direct Air Capture (DAC) is an important solution to curb global warming and enable a circular economy. As fossil fuels dwindle, carbon for commodities such as plastic, cement, steel and liquid fuel, will need to come from somewhere. With the low cost of industrial CO2 (roughly $80 a ton) as well as the low value of most carbon credits, making DAC-produced CO2 competitive at scale is almost impossible. But what if we could scale DAC processes in markets that make sense now, building on learnings as we go while making industries less carbon intensive? The first such application is air quality and energy efficiency in indoor spaces. DAC technology can stabilize CO2 and water levels inside indoor environments to enhance the recirculation rate of internal air, thereby saving significant energy for the HVAC. Another application is the use of small-scale DAC units—providing CO2 at the scale of kilos a day rather than tons, taking advantage of the high CO2 price at that scale as well as B2C markets that otherwise rely on bottled CO2. The approach is called Decentralised DAC or DDAC (analogous to decentralised solar). DAC processes need to be developed but to scale our learnings and drive down costs, we must fund R&D and introduce a significant carbon tax. Finally, interesting new developments such as electro-swing and humidity-swing carbon capture, have the potential to drastically decrease the energy footprint of DAC (its main cost driver), paving the way to making DAC affordable.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2), as the primary greenhouse gas, has significant impacts on global climate change, leading to severe and irreversible adverse consequences for ecosystems and human environments. To address the issue of excessive CO2 emissions, efforts in recent years have yielded significant progress in the development of clean energy sources and the promotion of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies. Conventional CO2 capture techniques are limited in addressing global atmospheric CO2 excess effectively, as they target only high-concentration CO2 emissions and require implementation at specific emission points. Direct air capture (DAC) technology has emerged as a promising solution due to its flexibility in deployment, avoidance of land competition, and ability to capture legacy CO2 emissions. Additionally, DAC offers opportunities for producing synthetic clean fuels, thereby reducing reliance on traditional fossil fuels and aiding in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This study provides a comprehensive review of DAC technology, encompassing its principles, technological advancements, real-world applications, challenges, and future research directions. By offering insights into the current state and potential of DAC technology, this study aims to guide global efforts in scaling up DAC deployment, ultimately contributing to achieving global carbon neutrality or even negative emissions.

Abstract:Capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) from flue gases and utilizing it as a feedstock for the production of renewable chemicals and fuels has been identified as an essential step toward mitigating climate change. Conventional CO2 capture technologies, such as amine scrubbing, are impeded by their high energy demand due to the thermodynamically low driving force for desorbing CO2. A new concept is presented here that combines carbon capture with power-to-methane: Bio-integrated carbon capture and utilization (BICCU). It exploits the robustness of microbial catalysts to simultaneously desorb the CO2 from an amine-based absorbent and convert the captured CO2 to synthetic natural gas (CH4) in a single step using renewable hydrogen. Experimental results in batch reactors with synthetic flue gas and raw flue gas from a biogas engine demonstrate high microbial biocompatibility with amine methyl diethanolamine (MDEA), high microbial robustness towards impurities and oxygen in raw flue gas, and almost full bioavailability of the absorbed CO2 until 120 mM of MDEA.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) is a promising technology that can help to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. One application of DAC is indoor CO2 direct air capture (iCO2-DAC). A wide range of materials with unique properties for CO2 capture have been investigated, including porous materials, zeolites, and metal-organic frameworks. The selection of suitable materials for iCO2-DAC depends on several factors, such as cost, CO2 adsorption capacity, and stability. The development of new materials with improved properties for iCO2-DAC is an active research area. The captured CO2 can serve as a renewable carbon source to produce biofuels for internal use (e.g., for heating purposes), decreasing the environmental impact of buildings. This review article highlights the importance of iCO2-DAC to improve indoor air quality in buildings and boost the circular economy. We discuss the available carbon capture technologies and materials, discussing their properties and focusing on those potentially applicable to indoor environments. We also provide a hypothetic scenario where CO2 is captured from different indoor environments and transformed into sustainable fuels by using an emerging carbon capture and utilization technology (microbial electrosynthesis). Finally, we evaluate the economic feasibility of such an innovative approach in comparison to the use of traditional, fossil-based fuels.
Direct conversion of CO<sub>2</sub> to a jet fuel over CoFe alloy catalysts

Abstract:The direct conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) using green hydrogen is a sustainable approach to jet fuel production. However, achieving a high level of performance remains a formidable challenge due to the inertness of CO2 and its low activity for subsequent C-C bond formation. In this study, we prepared a Na-modified CoFe alloy catalyst using layered double-hydroxide precursors that directly transforms CO2 to a jet fuel composed of C-8-C-16 jet-fuel-range hydrocarbons with very high selectivity. At a temperature of 240 degrees C and pressure of 3 MPa, the catalyst achieves an unprecedentedly high C-8-C-16 selectivity of 63.5% with 10.2% CO2 conversion and a low combined selectivity of less than 22% toward undesired CO and CH4. Spectroscopic and computational studies show that the promotion of the coupling reaction between the carbon species and inhibition of the undesired CO2 methanation occur mainly due to the utilization of the CoFe alloy structure and addition of the Na promoter. This study provides a viable technique for the highly selective synthesis of eco-friendly and carbon-neutral jet fuel from CO2.

Abstract:A potential to decarbonize atmosphere, while simultaneously providing a feedstock for functional industrial applications, induces a strong economic incentive for direct air capture (DAC). However, DAC systems, developed to date, are energy, resource, and cost prohibitive. Measurement-complementing multiscale modelling has proven to be of a large visible value for the sorbent rapid screening from a vast scientific collection of prospective selected candidates, machine learning (ML) integration, and for the process design engineering with a characteristic low penalty for CO 2 regeneration and optimal uptake rates. The review provides an extensive evaluation of recent advances in multiscale modelling of DAC research. It introduces the theoretical physical descriptions of DAC, presents atom scale structuring, and brings together the state of the art of this, until now, poorly-researched analysis topic. Reviewed (CO 2 mass) transfer works span from the ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculation relationships to mesoscale Monte Carlo, molecular dynamics simulations and micro-kinetics, adsorption/desorption, and lastly, most commonly-investigated specific macroscale concept. The modelled DAC processes properties reported in the literature have been compared, which allowed us to identify the most effective sorbents. Amine functionalized metal-organic frameworks exhibit low energy requirements, the lowest reported was 1000 kWh tCO 2 −1 , while the lowest published cost was 60 $ tCO 2 −1 . Recently, there are progressively emerging promising new entrants into the DAC field, providing climate-neutral feedstock for commercial processes. The market demand for CO 2 is expected to exponentially rise up to 6.1 Gt in 2050, while the cost of implementing DAC technologies is predicted to be reduced under 125 $ tCO 2 −1 in the year 2030. Further modelling research activities in CO 2 (sorption) bed form phenomena could not only break the barriers of current renewable technologies, but also couple the CO 2 reactions with the sequestration, reactors, and neutralization of harmful environmental pollutants, monoxide, NO x , SO x , etc. DAC could be ultimately coupled with electrolysis (hydrogen), producing e-fuels.

Abstract:The successful operation of a process that converts atmospheric CO2 into solid carbon products is presented as an alternative to fossil based solid carbon production. In a first step, CO2 is removed from the atmosphere by a direct air capture (DAC) unit. The gas is then mixed with hydrogen and enters a methanation unit. Depending on the operation conditions, gas mixtures consisting of mainly methane with either H2 or CO2 as side‐component are obtained. After precipitating the water formed during the methanation step, the remaining gas mixture is fed into a bubble column reactor filled with liquid tin. During the rise of the gas bubbles, methane is thermally split up into hydrogen and solid carbon. The latter is continuously removed from the liquid metal surface as a fine powder by pneumatic conveying. This article is the first of two articles, focusing on the performance of the methanation and methane pyrolysis steps. The experimental results are complemented by thermodynamic analyses and reaction modelling. A detailed analysis of the solid carbon product of the process is presented in the second part.

Life-cycle analysis of greenhouse gas emissions from renewable jet fuel production

Abstract:Background: The introduction of renewable jet fuel (RJF) is considered an important emission mitigation measure for the aviation industry. This study compares the well-to-wake (WtWa) greenhouse gas (GHG) emission performance of multiple RJF conversion pathways and explores the impact of different co-product allocation methods. The insights obtained in this study are of particular importance if RJF is included as an emission mitigation instrument in the global Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Results: Fischer-Tropsch pathways yield the highest GHG emission reduction compared to fossil jet fuel (86-104%) of the pathways in scope, followed by Hydrothermal Liquefaction (77-80%) and sugarcane- (71-75%) and corn stover-based Alcohol-to-Jet (60-75%). Feedstock cultivation, hydrogen and conversion inputs were shown to be major contributors to the overall WtWa GHG emission performance. The choice of allocation method mainly affects pathways yielding high shares of co-products or producing co-products which effectively displace carbon intensive products (e.g., electricity). Conclusions: Renewable jet fuel can contribute to significant reduction of aviation-related GHG emissions, provided the right feedstock and conversion technology are used. The GHG emission performance of RJF may be further improved by using sustainable hydrogen sources or applying carbon capture and storage. Based on the character and impact of different co-product allocation methods, we recommend using energy and economic allocation (for non-energy co-products) at a global level, as it leverages the universal character of energy allocation while adequately valuing non-energy co-products.

Abstract:The aviation industry is responsible for over 2% of global CO(2) emissions. Synthetic jet fuels generated from biogenic feedstocks could help reduce life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions compared to petroleum-based fuels. Process Reduces Carbon Emissions From Natural Gas Compression and Production

The paper has not been peer reviewed. _ A chemical-free process has been developed to capture exhaust from natural gas drive compressors and supporting gas-fueled production equipment while featuring a small footprint. The process separates CO2 and nitrogen from exhaust, allowing the CO2 to be discharged at high pressure for transport, sequestration, or enhanced oil recovery. Introduction Over 50,000 compressors move natural gas in North America. Most are driven by either internal combustion engines or turbines. These compressors produce am estimate of more than 30 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent yearly, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Reporting Program. The significance of GHG reduction policies has heightened with the passing of the Inflation Reduction Act, which provides support for companies investing in future carbon capture use and storage, along with methane reduction. Process Modeling Modeling and analysis of an exhaust-gas carbon capture system, and the design and optimization of a supercritical CO2 (sCO2) waste-heat-recovery power cycle, was performed. This cycle was chosen for its high efficiency and relatively compact design compared with competitive waste-heat-recovery technologies. The preliminary process-flow diagram was provided based on conditions for 30,000-hp large reciprocating gas engines. Several process configurations were investigated; these iterations are detailed in the complete paper. A summary of this development shows that Iterations 1 through 3 showed improvements in power through improving the sCO2 power-cycle efficiency. However, this came at the increase in high-pressure sCO2 components. A simplification of components returned the sCO2 cycle to a single cascaded cycle in Iterations 4 through 5. Temperature selection in the sCO2 cycle also improved its efficiency. Moving to Iteration 4 improved the system power requirement by 20.7%. Iteration 5 showed moderately reduced performance over Iteration 4. This was the result of shifting more duty to the ammonia chillers and a moderate worsening of performance in the gas compressor. Iteration 5 did not improve the power requirement of the system. Ultimately, Iteration 4 was the most-efficient cycle evaluated with the overall lowest power requirement. Exhaust-Capture Decarbonization System The system developed captures exhaust from compression and other internal combustion equipment commonly used in gas transmission, oil and gas production, and midstream applications. The system works with a chemical-free, cryogenic design with a small modular footprint to capture large volumes of exhaust gas at atmospheric pressure. This technology separates CO2 and nitrogen, generates enough power from waste heat to run the equipment, and discharges captured CO2 under high pressure at supercritical conditions for compressor stations of 5,000 to 20,000 hp. The design is fully self-contained and mounts on a compact skid package capable of handling up to 70 million scf/D of exhaust while extracting liquid CO2 from rich-burn driven compressors, lean-burn driven compressors, or turbines.
