Abstract:Evaluating the mechanical properties of biodegradable implants can be challenging for in situ experiments and time-consuming for materials with a slow degradation rate, such as polycaprolactone (PCL). In this work, the effects of chain scission and water erosion on the mechanical properties of degraded PCL are investigated by molecular dynamics simulation. The decrease of the mechanical performance is correlated with the increase of the nonaffine displacement during the degradation. The nonaffine squared displacements (NSD) during the tensile deformation are calculated by subtracting the affine squared displacements from the mean squared displacements. After chain scission, short polymer chains increase the NSD of the system and weaken the modulus of the polymer matrix. The effect of the NSD is also observed in a water erosion model. When the bond break ratio is less than 5%, PCL still maintains a well-entangled network, which constrains the diffusion of the water molecules, resulting in a higher modulus of the erosion model than the chain scission model at a low degradation rate. The effect of NSD is also found in the PCL/graphene composites. For the degraded polymer chains, the diffusion of PCL is constrained by the graphene network, and such an effect increases during the degradation. As a result, the addition of graphene nanosheets slows down the decreasing trend of Young's modulus. Such findings can also explain the size effect of the graphene reinforcement on the mechanical properties of the polymer composites. This work provides atomistic insights into the mechanical property evolution during polymer degradation, revealing the possibility of tuning the mechanical performance by controlling the diffusion, which could be beneficial for the design and lifetime prediction of degradable implants.

Abstract:Regenerated cellulose/ionic liquids (ILs)-reduced graphene oxide (IRGO) nanocomposites have been prepared via a simple and green method based on 1-allyl-3-methylimidazoliun chloride (AmimCl). To one's surprise, it is found that the presence of a small amount of IRGO sheets can largely decelerate the dissolution of cellulose in AmimCl, and thus the thermal and mechanical properties of resultant cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites could be controlled simply by changing the dissolution time. Our results suggest that the residual cellulose fibrils with micrometre size are beneficial to the thermal stabilities of regenerated cellulose/IRGO films when short dissolution time is used. However, for obtaining cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties, full dissolution and mixture of cellulose in IRGO/AmimCl solution with prolonged time are required. Compared with the regenerated pure cellulose film, our cellulose/IRGO nanocomposite prepared with dissolution time of 4 h exhibits about 23 degrees C increase in decomposition temperature, and 10.7% increase in tensile strength and remarkably 387.5% increase in strain at break, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract This study describes the preparation and characterization of full atomistic models of amorphous cellulose and calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) nanocomposite to assess its mechanical properties within and beyond the elastic limit via molecular dynamics simulations. The interactions by hydrogen bond and conformation of the cellulose molecules from the assessment of torsional angles were specifically monitored during the tensile stretching simulations to get deep understanding of the possible structural changes produced in the material during the deformation. On the one hand, the results showed a favorable interaction of the cellulose matrix with the calcium carbonate nanoparticle, with the electrostatic contribution being dominant over the van der Waals component. The determined mechanical elastic constants indicated that the inclusion of the CaCO 3 nanoparticle provided an increase on the rigidity of the composite system of 15%, 18% and 19% in the Young, shear or bulk modulus, respectively. On the other hand, using extension and compression simulations, the recovery capacity of the material systems was also assessed in terms of plastic deformation. The elastoplastic behavior was observed for either the neat or the CaCO 3 nanocomposite, with an elastic limit around 2.5%. The results also showed that the presence of the CaCO 3 nanoparticle produced higher values of plastic deformation in the composite material compared to the neat cellulose system and thus decreased the flexibility of the material. A hysteresis mechanism was identified together with irreversible conformational changes on the cellulose molecules which would explain the plastic deformation observed on the cellulosic systems. It was concluded that the higher plastic deformations observed in the nanocomposite system would be a result of the disruption of the network of hydrogen bonds and the associated decrease on the number of possible interactions. Abstract:At present, most high-performance cellulose matrix composites only use cellulose as reinforcement material, which is an obstacle to maximize the advantages of nanocellulose in structure and properties. The development of new functional nanocomposites with cellulose as the main component can better meet people's needs for high-performance and degradable composites, which requires a comprehensive and thorough understanding of cellulose. Considering the limitations of physical experiments, we performed molecular dynamics simulation of the uniaxial tensile behavior of the cellulose system at three different strain rates (10−4/ps, 10−5/ps, and 10−6/ps), and the stress-strain responses of cellulose systems at different strain rates are obtained. The effect of the strain rate on the mechanical properties of amorphous cellulose system during the tensile processes is analyzed. The deformation mechanism of cellulose amorphous system during the tensile processes is characterized by the energy changes of the different terms including dihedral angle torsion term, bond tensile term, angle bending term, and nonbond term. Structural evolution of the cellulose crystal system during the tensile processes is used to explain the failure mechanism of cellulose. The kinetic simulation results show that the mechanical properties of the cellulose amorphous system increase with the increase of strain rate. Compared with the strain rate of 10−5/ps, the elastic modulus of the system increases by 6.73 GPa at the strain rate 10−4/ps. During the tensile processes, cellulose amorphous region adapts to the applied load mainly through the stretching of the cellulose macromolecular chains, i.e., the deformation of bond lengths and bond angles, without any breakage of the molecular chains. The main causes of chain lengthening at different strain rates are different. The failure of cellulose is caused by the slip and rearrangement of some molecular chains in the crystal structure.

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received a significant amount of attention due to their excellent physiochemical properties. Herein, based on bioinspired layered materials with excellent mechanical properties, a CNCs-graphene layered structure with covalent linkages (C-C bond) is constructed. The mechanical properties are systematically studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in terms of the effects of temperature, strain rate and the covalent bond content. Compared to pristine CNCs, the mechanical performance of the CNCs-graphene layered structure has significantly improved. The elastic modulus of the layered structure decreases with the increase of temperature and increases with the increase of strain rate and covalent bond coverage. The results show that the covalent bonding and van der Waals force interactions at the interfaces play an important role in the interfacial adhesion and load transfer capacity of composite materials. These findings can be useful in further modeling of other graphene-based polymers at the atomic scale, which will be critical for their potential applications as functional materials.

Abstract:Cellulose polymers are widely used to fabricate green composites, implemented as fiber, matrix, and adhesive material between them. In this study, cellulose polymers are used as interphase material between spherical nanoparticles of hydroxylated alumina (Al2O3) and epoxy. Molecular dynamics simulations using the large‐scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator (LAMMPS) are utilized to investigate the effect of the cellulose content on the stiffness and tensile strength of epoxy/alumina nanocomposites. Polymer consistent forcefield (PCFF) and its supplement provided by MedeA software (PCFF+) define the interactions between the atoms. The simulation results indicate that incorporating cellulose into epoxy would increase the stiffness and strength properties considering that the cellulose polymers do not experience any agglomeration in the hosting matrix and have good interfacial adhesion with epoxy and alumina. This interfacial adhesion is needed since inserting cellulose polymers between alumina nanoparticles and epoxy would increase the porosity in the interphase region, limiting the stress transfer at the interphase and reducing the tensile strength of epoxy‐alumina nanocomposites.

Abstract:The plant cell wall (PCW) inspires the preparation of fiber-based biomaterials, particularly emphasizing exploiting the intrinsic interactions within the load-bearing cellulose and hemicellulose network. Due to experimental difficulties in studying and interpreting the interaction between these polysaccharides, this research presents a numerical model based on coarse-grained molecular dynamics that evaluates the mechanical properties of fiber composites. To validate the model and explain the structural and mechanical role of hemicelluloses, bacterial cellulose (BC) was synthesized in the presence of different concentrations of xylan, arabinoxylan, xyloglucan, or glucomannan and subjected to nano- and macroscale structural and mechanical characterization. The data obtained were used to interpret the effects of each hemicellulose on the mechanics of the BC-hemicellulose composite based on the sensitivity of the model. The mechanical properties of the resulting simulated networks agreed well with the experimental observations of the BC-hemicellulose composites. Increased xylan and arabinoxylan contents increased the macroscale mechanical properties, fiber modulus (xylan), and fiber width (arabinoxylan). The addition of xyloglucan increased the mechanical properties of the composites in the elastic deformation phase, associated with an increase in the fiber modulus. Adding glucomannan to the culture medium decreased all the mechanical properties studied while the fiber width increased.
Nanostructure and interfacial mechanical properties of PEG/cellulose nanocomposites studied with molecular dynamics

Abstract:Our starting hypothesis is that Polyethylene glycol (PEG) can be utilized to mix with the biopolymers for consolidating fiber-reinforced composites without deteriorating their hygro-mechanical properties. The effect of PEG on the shear strength during pull-out of crystalline cellulose (CC) fiber out of an amorphous cellulose matrix is simulated with molecular dynamics. The interfacial shear stress shows a stick-slip behavior and is weakened with increasing moisture content. Shear strength increases at low moisture content, manifesting a slight strengthening of interfacial mechanical property due to cohesive forces exerted by the water molecules. At higher moisture content, shear strength is reduced due to breakage of the hydrogen bonds between CC and matrix by water molecules. When adding PEG, amorphous cellulose around the crystalline fiber is replaced by PEG, forming a mixture with amorphous cellulose. It is found that PEG-treated CC-AC composite maintains its shear strength and the presence of PEG does not deteriorate the dependence of the shear strength on moisture content. A shear strength model based on the number of hydrogen bonds between the fiber and the matrix is developed, which validates our initial hypothesis by unraveling the fundamental mechanisms at play. The model reveals that, although the shear strength per hydrogen bond between the fiber and PEG is lower than the shear strength per hydrogen bond between the fiber and amorphous cellulose, the final shear strength is partly compensated by an increase in the total number of hydrogen bonds with increasing PEG ratio. Since PEG reduces the moisture content in the composite at low relative humidity, PEG treated wood in museum conditions will show enhanced shear strength. The framework is a basis for further investigation of realistic archaeological wood with PEG-treatment.
Molecular and thermodynamic insights into interfacial interactions between collagen and cellulose investigated by molecular dynamics simulation and umbrella sampling

Abstract:Cellulose/collagen composites have been widely used in biomedicine and tissue engineering. Interfacial interactions are crucial in determining the final properties of cellulose/collagen composite. Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to gain insights into the interactions between cellulose and collagen. It has been found that the structure of collagen remained intact during adsorption. The results derived from umbrella sampling showed that (110) and ( ) faces exhibited the strongest affinity with collagen (100) face came the second and (010) the last, which could be attributed to the surface roughness and hydrogen-bonding linkers involved water molecules. Cellulose planes with flat surfaces and the capability to form hydrogen-bonding linkers produce stronger affinity with collagen. The occupancy of hydrogen bonds formed between cellulose and collagen was low and not significantly contributive to the binding affinity. These findings provided insights into the interactions between cellulose and collagen at the molecular level, which may guide the design and fabrication of cellulose/collagen composites.

Abstract:The degradation rate of polycaprolactone (PCL) is a key issue when using this material in Tissue Engineering or eco-friendly packaging sectors. Although different PCL-based composite materials have been suggested in the literature and extensively tested in terms of processability by material extrusion additive manufacturing, little attention has been paid to the influence of the fillers on the mechanical properties of the material during degradation. This work analyses the possibility of tuning the degradation rate of PCL-based filaments by the introduction of microcrystalline cellulose into the polymer matrix. The enzymatic degradation of the composite and pure PCL materials were compared in terms of mass loss, mechanical properties, morphology and infrared spectra. The results showed an increased degradation rate of the composite material due to the presence of the filler (enhanced interaction with the enzymes). Additionally, a new numerical method for the prediction of the degraded geometry was developed. The method, based on the Monte Carlo Method in an iterative process, adjusts the degradation probability according to the exposure of each discretized element to the degradation media. This probability is also amplified depending on the corresponding experimental mass loss, thus allowing a good fit to the experimental data in relatively few iterations.

Abstract:The dissolution behavior of cellulose acetate (CA) is an extremely important property in its extensive applications and preparation of derivatives. In this paper, we proposed a molecular model building strategy to construct amorphous CA with various substituent distributions (different degrees of substitution and substitution positions). A protocol combing molecular dynamics simulation and density functional theory (DFT) was applied to systematically investigate the dissolution behavior of CAs, and the structural properties of CAs. The reduced cohesive energy and polarity of CAs caused by the increase in substituents would enhance its solubility. The interaction of solvent molecules and CAs and the diffusion of solvent molecules in CAs have a synergistic effect on the dissolution of CAs. The diffusion coefficient is the primary factor affecting the solubility. Moreover, substituents at different positions of the anhydroglucose units along the CAs chains would produce different steric hindrance effects, which in turn affect the dissolution behavior.

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA) has become a popular alternative for petroleum-based plastics to reduce environmental pollution. The broader application of PLA is hampered by its brittle nature and incompatibility with the reinforcement phase. The aim of our work was to improve the ductility and compatibility of PLA composite film and investigate the mechanism by which nanocellulose enhances PLA polymer. Here, we present a robust PLA/nanocellulose hybrid film. Two different allomorphic cellulose nanocrystals (CNC-I and CNC-III) and their acetylated products (ACNC-I and ACNC-III) were used to realize better compatibility and mechanical performance in a hydrophobic PLA matrix. The tensile stress of the composite films with 3% ACNC-I and ACNC-III increased by 41.55% and 27.22% compared to pure PLA film, respectively. Compared to the CNC-I or CNC-III enhanced PLA composite films, the tensile stress of the films increased by 45.05% with 1% ACNC-I and 56.15% with 1% ACNC-III. In addition, PLA composite films with ACNCs showed better ductility and compatibility because the composite fracture gradually transitioned to a ductile fracture during the stretching process. As a result, ACNC-I and ACNC-III were found to be excellent reinforcing agents for the enhancement of the properties of polylactide composite film, and the replacement some petrochemical plastics with PLA composites would be very promising in actual life.

Abstract:The extrusion‐based 3D printing process offers advantages, such as high precision, low cost, high speed, simplicity, and the ability to deposit multiple materials simultaneously. However, using 3D printing composite materials with orthogonal anisotropy can limit the interlayer bonding strength of printed parts. In this study, the interlayer tensile strength of 3D‐printed polylactic acid (PLA) was affected by adding 0.5 wt% cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) and 1.2 wt% di‐cumyl peroxide (DCP) to PLA, and annealing at low temperature (373 K, 1 h). The effects of annealing and CNC were determined by mechanical testing, scanning electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, expansion testing, rheological testing, and x‐ray diffraction analysis. After annealing, the interlayer gap increased due to crystal shrinkage, leading to a 25.9% decrease in tensile strength. However, the addition of CNC and DCP significantly improved the flow properties of the sample, resulting in better interlayer bonding and a 52.7% increase in tensile strength.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) films with good sustainable and biodegradable properties have been increasingly explored recently, while the poor mechanical property of PLA limits its further application. Herein, three kinds of nano-sized cellulose formate (NCF: cellulose nanofibril (CNF), cellulose nanocrystal (CNC), and regenerated cellulose formate (CF)) with different properties were fabricated via a one-step formic acid (FA) hydrolysis of tobacco stalk, and the influence of the properties of NCF with different morphologies, crystallinity index (CrI), and degree of substitution (DS) on the end quality of PLA composite film was systematically compared. Results showed that the PLA/CNC film showed the highest increase (106%) of tensile strength compared to the CNF- and CF-based films, which was induced by the rod-like CNC with higher CrI. PLA/CF film showed the largest increase (50%) of elongation at the break and more even surface, which was due to the stronger interfacial interaction between PLA and the CF with higher DS. Moreover, the degradation property of PLA/CNF film was better than that of other composite films. This fundamental study was very beneficial for the development of high-quality, sustainable packaging as an alternative to petroleum-based products.

Abstract:<p>Cellulose is one of the most promising fillers used for poly(lactic acid) (PLA) composites owing to its natural abundance, complete biodegradability, and superb properties. Improving the compatibility between hydrophilic cellulose and hydrophobic PLA is a hot topic in literature for a long time, wherein surface chemical modification of cellulose have attracted the most attention. In this review, we summarized the research activities of recent five years that focus on the chemical modification strategies of cellulose used in PLA/cellulose composites. Two major classifications are carefully discussed, i.e., the reactions of small molecules modified cellulose such as esterification, oxidation/amidation and silanization, and reactions of polymers modified cellulose including PLA and other polymers. The discussion mainly focuses on the relationship between the structure of grafted small molecule/polymers and mechanical properties of PLA composites and addresses the current common problems that hinder the chemical modified cellulose from developing high-performance PLA/cellulose composites. We hope this review provide some possible inspiration for researchers to develop PLA/cellulose products with industrial value in the future.</p>

Iα to Iβ mechano-conversion and amorphization in native cellulose simulated by crystal bending

Abstract:The bending of rod-like native cellulose crystals with degree of polymerization 40 and 160 using molecular dynamics simulations resulted in a deformation-induced local amorphization at the kinking point and allomorphic interconversion between cellulose Iα and Iβ in the unbent segments. The transformation mechanism involves a longitudinal chain slippage of the hydrogen-bonded sheets by the length of one anhydroglucose residue (~ 0.5 nm), which alters the chain stacking from the monotonic (Iα) form to the alternating Iβ one or vice versa. This mechanical deformation converts the Iα form progressively to the Iβ form, as has been experimentally observed for ultrasonication of microfibrils. Iβ is also able to partially convert to Iα-like organization but this conversion is only transitory. The qualitative agreement between the behavior of ultrasonicated microfibrils and in silico observed Iα → Iβ conversion suggests that shear deformation and chain slippage under bending deformation is a general process when cellulose fibrils experience lateral mechanical stress.

Abstract:The following article is the presentation attempt of cellulose hybrid chemical modification approach as a useful tool in improving the mechanical properties of plant fiber-filled polymer materials. The treatment process is a prolonged method of the cellulose maleinization and consists of two steps: 1. solvent exchange (altering fiber structure); 2. maleic anhydride (MA) chemical grafting (surface modification). Thanks to the incorporated treatment method, the created ethylene–norbornene copolymer composite specimen exhibited an improved performance, tensile strength at the level of (38.8 ± 0.8) MPa and (510 ± 20)% elongation at break, which is higher than for neat polymer matrix and could not be achieved in the case of regular MA treatment. Moreover, both the Payne effect and filler efficiency factor indicate a possibility of the fiber reinforcing nature that is not a common result. Additionally, the polymer matrix employed in this research is widely known for its excellent resistance to aqueous and polar organic media, good biocompatibility, and the ability to reproduce fine structures which makes it an interesting material regarding healthcare applications. Therefore, plant fiber-based polymer materials described in this research might be potentially applied in this area, e.g., medical devices, drug delivery, wearables, pharmaceutical blisters, and trays.

Abstract:Cellulose-reinforced polypropylene bionanocomposites can show improved elastic properties over their pure polypropylene counterparts. We have used equilibrium and non-equilibrium molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to study the elastic properties of polypropylene bionanocomposite systems composed of cellulose nanofibrils (CNF), polypropylene (PP) matrix, and maleic anhydride (MAH) coupling agent. The components of the bionanocomposite were parametrized for compatibility with the AMBER14SB force fields. The elastic properties of pure PP systems converge for the chains with at least 20 monomers. The ratio of cellulose in CNF-PP bionanocomposites strongly affects their elastic properties. The elastic modulus of CNF-PP bionanocomposites shows small improvement when the adhesion between hydrophobic and hydrophilic components is facilitated by a MAH coupling agent. The results demonstrate how fully-atomistic MD simulations can be systematically used to evaluate the elastic properties of CNF-PP bionanocomposites and to make predictions that are in agreement with experiments.

Abstract:Polylactic acid (PLA) has inherent drawbacks, such as its amorphous structure, which affect its mechanical and barrier properties. The use of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) mixed with PLA for the production of composites has been chosen as a solution to the above problems. A PLA/NFC composite was produced by solution casting. Before use, the cellulose was modified using a silane coupling agent. The composite films were investigated via X-ray diffraction, as well as by mechanical, physical, thermal analyses and by differential scanning calorimeter. The crystallinity was four times that of pure PLA and the water vapor transmission rate decreased by 76.9% with the incorporation of 10 wt% of NFC. The tensile strength of PLA/NFC blend films increased by 98.8% with the incorporation of 5 wt% of NFC. The study demonstrates that the addition of NFC improved the properties of PLA. This provides a solid foundation for the enhancement of the performance of PLA products.

Abstract:The aim of the present work is to develop a high-performance composite using biomimetic approaches that will exploit the interactions between two biopolymers, cellulose and xyloglucan, and these interactions play an important role but still not fully understood in the biomechanical properties of primary plant cell walls [1]. In this study, the co-solubility of cellulose and xyloglucan in an ionic liquid (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EMIMAC)) is used to prepare regenerated films by subsequent precipitation with a non-solvent. Films of pure cellulose, pure xyloglucan and various cellulose/xylogucan blends were obtained and characterized by Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and hygro-mechanical analysis. The biopolymer blends show an increase of the storage modulus comparatively to the regenerated pure biopolymers.
