Abstract:In this paper we make a subtle use of tools from operator theory and the Schauder fixed-point theorem to establish the existence of pseudo-almost automorphic solutions to some classes of nonautonomous integro-differential equations with pseudo-almost automorphic forcing terms. To illustrate our main results, the existence of pseudo-almost automorphic solutions to a parabolic Neumann boundary value problem that models population genetics and nerve pulse propagation will be discussed.

Abstract:The paper deals with the explicit calculus and the properties of the fundamental solution K of a parabolic operator related to a semilinear equation that models reaction diffusion systems with excitable kinetics. The initial value problem in all of the space is analyzed together with continuous dependence and a priori estimates of the solution. These estimates show that the asymptotic behavior is determined by the reaction mechanism. Moreover it's possible a rigorous singular perturbation analysis for discussing travelling waves with their characteristic times.

Abstract:We provide a new existence result for abstract nonlinear operator systems in normed spaces, by means of topological methods. The solution is located within the product of annular regions and conical shells. The theoretical result possesses a wide range of applicability, which, for concreteness, we illustrate in the context of systems of nonlinear Poisson equations subject to homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions. For the latter problem we obtain existence and localization of solutions having all components nontrivial. This is also illustrated with an explicit example in which we also furnish a numerically approximated solution, consistent with the theoretical results.

Abstract:We investigate real solutions of a C-integrable non-evolutionary partial differential equation in the form of a scalar conservation law where the flux density depends both on the density and on its first derivatives with respect to the local variables. By performing a similarity reduction dictated by one of its local symmetry generators, a nonlinear ordinary differential equation arises that is connected to the Painlevé III equation. Exact solutions are secured and described provided a constraint holds among the coefficients of the original equation. In the most general case, we pinpoint the generation of additional singularities by numerical integration. Then, we discuss the evolution of given initial profiles. Finally, we mention aspects concerning rational solutions with a finite number of poles.

Topological Methods in Nonlinear Analysis

Abstract:We study the existence of positive solutions for a fractional differential equation with integral boundary conditions. Our solutions are placed in the space of Hölder functions and the main tools used in the proof of the results are the classical Schauder fixed point theorem and a sufficient condition about the relative compactness in Hölder spaces. Moreover, some examples are shown illustrating the results.

Abstract:We study positive solutions of an equation with singular nonlinearities. The equation arises in the study of equilibrium states of thin films. Under weak assumptions on the nonlinearity, we show that for N >= 3 there exists a family of radial solutions {u(alpha)}(alpha>0) with u(alpha)(0) = alpha and each of them is oscillatory in ( 0, infinity). We obtain then a singular radial solution in ( 0, infinity) by taking the limit alpha --> 0. Meanwhile, using the solutions obtained in ( 0, infinity), we show some existence results for the corresponding Neumann eigenvalue problem on a ball.

Abstract:We study a class of nonlinear implicit fractional differential equations subject to nonlocal boundary conditions expressed in terms of nonlinear integro-differential equations. Using the Krasnosel'skii fixed-point theorem we prove, via the Kolmogorov–Riesz criteria, the existence of solutions. The existence results are established in a specific fractional derivative Banach space and they are illustrated by two numerical examples.

Abstract:We introduce a fractional variant of the Cahn-Hilliard equation settled in a bounded domain and with a possibly singular potential. We first focus on the case of homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions, and show how to prove the existence and uniqueness of a weak solution. The proof relies on the variational method known as \textit{minimizing-movements scheme}, which fits naturally with the gradient-flow structure of the equation. The interest of the proposed method lies in its extreme generality and flexibility. In particular, relying on the variational structure of the equation, we prove the existence of a solution for a general class of integrodifferential operators, not necessarily linear or symmetric, which include fractional versions of the $q$-Laplacian. In the second part of the paper, we adapt the argument in order to prove the existence of solutions in the case of regional fractional operators. As a byproduct, this yields an existence result in the interesting cases of homogeneous fractional Neumann boundary conditions or periodic boundary conditions.

Abstract:We investigate the existence of nontrivial solutions of parameter-dependent elliptic equations with deviated argument in annular-like domains in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, with $n\geq 2$, subject to functional boundary conditions. In particular we consider a boundary value problem that may be used to model heat-flow problems. We obtain an existence result by means of topological methods; in particular, we make use of a recent variant in affine cones of the celebrated Birkhoff--Kellogg theorem. Using an ODE argument, we illustrate in an example the applicability of our theoretical result.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of weak, veryweak and duality solutions to a class of elliptic problems involving singularity and measure data which is given by: $-\Delta u+(-\Delta)^s u = \frac{f(x)}{u^\gamma} +\mu$ in $\Omega$ with the zero Dirichlet boundary data $u=0$ in $\mathbb R^N \setminus \Omega$. The existence of weak solutions is obtained by approximating a sequence of problems for $0<\gamma\leq1$ and $\gamma>1$. We employ Schauder's fixed point theorem and embeddings of Marcinkiewicz spaces. The novelty of our work is that we prove the existence of a duality solution and its equivalence with weak solutions to the problem $\mathcal{L}u=\mu$. Moreover, we prove a veryweak maximum principle and a Kato-type inequality for the mixed local-nonlocal operator $\mathcal{L}=-\Delta +(-\Delta)^s$, which are crucial tools to guarantee the existence of veryweak solutions to the problem. Using a Kato-type inequality, maximum principle together with sub-super solution method, we prove the existence of veryweak solution for $0<\gamma<1$. Our work extends the studies due to Oliva and Petitta [ESAIM Control Optim. Calc. Var., 22(1):289--308, 2016.] and Petitta [Adv. Nonlinear Stud., 16(1):115--124, 2016.] for the mixed local-nonlocal operator.

Abstract:In this work we study existence, sign and asymptotic behaviour of solutions for a class of elliptic problems of the integral-differential type under the presence of a parameter. A careful analysis of the influence of the referred parameter on the structure of the set of solutions is made, by considering different reaction terms. Among our main contributions are: (1) a positive answer to Remark 2.4 in Allegretto and Barabanova (Proc R Soc Edinb A 126(3):643–663, 1996); (2) a detailed treatment of the associated eigenvalue problem; (3) The first result involving the existence of a ground-state solution for this class of problems.
