Abstract:Let $M$ be a compact connected orientable Seifert manifold with hyperbolic orbifold $B_M$, and $f_{\pi}: \pi_1(M)\rightarrow\pi_1(M)$ be an automorphism induced by an orientation-reversing homeomorphism $f$ of $M$. We give a bound on the rank of the fixed subgroup of $f_{\pi}$, namely, $\rank\fix(f_{\pi})<2\rank \pi_1(M)$, which is similar to the inequalities on surface groups and hyperbolic 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:We consider a purely algebraic result. Then given a circle or cyclic group of prime order action on a manifold, we will use it to estimate the lower bound of the number of fixed points. We also give an obstruction to the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_p$ action on manifolds with isolated fixed points when $p$ is a prime.

Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:We consider 3-manifolds admitting the action of an involution such that its space of orbits is homeomorphic to $S^3.$ Such involutions are called \textit{hyperelliptic} as the manifolds admitting such an action. We prove that the sectional 2-rank of a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution with fixed-point set with two components has sectional 2-rank at most four; this upper bound is sharp. The cases where the hyperelliptic involution has a fixed-point set with a number of components different from 2 have been already considered in literature. Our result completes the analysis and we obtain some general results where the number of the components of the fixed-point set is not fixed. In particular, we obtain that a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution has 2-rank at most four, and four is the best possible upper bound. Finally, we restrict to the basic case of simple groups acting on hyperelliptic 3-manifolds: we use our result about the sectional 2-rank to prove that a simple group containing a hyperelliptic involution is isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ for some odd prime power $q$, or to one of four other small simple groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we are concerned with the direct product $G=\pi_1(\Sigma)\times \Z^k$ for $\Sigma$ a compact orientable surface with negative Euler characteristic, and give a complete classification of its fixed subgroups of automorphisms. As a corollary, we show that $G$ contains, up to isomorphism, infinitely many fixed subgroups of automorphisms if and only if $k\geq 2$, which is a contrast to that of hyperbolic groups. As an application on Nielsen fixed point theory, we provide a family of aspherical manifolds without Jiang's Bound Index Property. Moreover, we also give some results on the fixed subgroups of the direct product $H\times \Z^k$ for $H$ a non-elementary torsion-free hyperbolic group.

Abstract:We study fixed subgroups of automorphisms of any large-type Artin group $A_{\Gamma}$. We define a natural subgroup $\mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$ of $\mathrm{Aut}(A_{\Gamma})$, and for every $\gamma \in \mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$ we find the isomorphism type of $\mathrm{Fix}(\gamma)$ and a generating set for a finite index subgroup. We show that $\mathrm{Fix}(\gamma)$ is a finitely generated Artin group, with a uniform bound on the rank in terms of the number of vertices of $\Gamma$. Finally, we provide a natural geometric characterisation of the subgroup $\mathrm{Aut}_\Gamma(A_\Gamma)$, which informally is the maximal subgroup of $\mathrm{Aut}(A_\Gamma)$ leaving the Deligne complex of $A_{\Gamma}$ invariant.

Abstract:A complete classification is given of finite groups whose elements are partitioned into three orbits by the automorphism groups, solving the long-standing classification problem initiated by G.\,Higman in 1963. As a consequence, a classification is obtained for finite permutation groups of rank $3$ which are holomorphs of groups.

Abstract:Let Diff(N) and Homeo(N) denote the smooth and topological group of automorphisms respectively that fix the boundary of the n-manifold N, pointwise. We show that the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Homeo(S^1 \times D^{n-1}) is not finitely-generated for n >= 4 and in particular the topological mapping-class group of S^1\times D^3 is infinitely generated. We apply this to show that the smooth and topological automorphism groups of finite-volume hyperbolic n-manifolds (when n >= 4) do not have the homotopy-type of finite CW-complexes, results previously known for n >= 11 by Farrell and Jones. In particular, we show that if N is a closed hyperbolic n-manifold, and if Diff_0(N) represents the subgroup of diffeomorphisms that are homotopic to the identity, then the (n-4)-th homotopy group of Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated and hence if n=4, then \pi_0\Diff_0(N) is infinitely generated with similar results holding topologically.

Abstract:Let $G\leqslant\mathrm{Sym}(\Omega)$ be a finite transitive permutation group with point stabiliser $H$. We say that a subgroup $K$ of $G$ is a fixer if every element of $K$ has fixed points, and we say that $K$ is large if $|K| \geqslant |H|$. There is a special interest in studying large fixers due to connections with Erdős-Ko-Rado type problems. In this paper, we classify up to conjugacy the large fixers of the almost simple primitive groups with socle $\mathrm{PSL}_2(q)$, and we use this result to verify a special case of a conjecture of Spiga on permutation characters. We also present some results on large fixers of almost simple primitive groups with socle an alternating or sporadic group.

Finite Groups of Symplectic Automorphisms of Supersingular K3 surfaces in Odd Characteristics

Abstract:In 2009, Dolgachev-Keum show that finite groups of tame symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces in positive characteristics are subgroups of the Mathieu group of degree 23 under mild conditions. In this paper, we utilize lattice-theoretic methods to investigate symplectic actions of finite groups G on K3 surfaces in odd characteristics. In the tame cases (i.e., the order of G is coprime with p) and all the superspecial cases, one can associate with the action a Leech pair which can be detected via Höhn-Mason's list. Notice that the superspecial cases have been resolved by Ohashi-Schütt. If the K3 surface is supersingular with Artin invariant at least two, we develop a new machinery called p-root pairs to detect possible symplectic finite group actions (without the assumption of tameness). The concept of p-root pair is closely related to root systems and Weyl groups. In particular, we recover many results by Dolgachev-Keum with a different method and give an upper bound for the exponent of p in |G|.

Abstract:A group $G$ is called subgroup conjugacy separable if for every pair of non-conjugate finitely generated subgroups of $G$, there exists a finite quotient of $G$ where the images of these subgroups are not conjugate. It is proved that the fundamental group of a hyperbolic 3-manifold (closed or with cusps) is subgroup conjugacy separable.

Abstract:A group $H$ of holomorphic automorphisms of a compact $d$-dimensional complex manifold $M$ is called a generalized Fermat group of type $(d;k,n)$ if $H\cong {\mathbb Z}_{k}^{n}$ and there is a Galois holomorphic branched covering $\pi:M \to {\mathbb P}^{d}$, with deck group $H$, whose branch divisor consists of $n+1$ hyperplanes in general position (each one of branch order $k$). We prove that generalized Fermat groups of type $(d;k,n)$ are unique for $(d;k,n) \notin \{(2;2,5), (2;4,3)\}$.

Finite groups of symplectic birational transformations of IHS manifolds of $OG10$ type

Abstract:We classify finite groups that act faithfully by symplectic birational transformations on an irreducible holomorphic symplectic (IHS) manifold of OG10 type. In particular, if X is an IHS manifold of OG10 type and G a finite subgroup of symplectic birational transformations of X, then the action of G on H2(X, Z) is conjugate to a subgroup of one of 375 groups of isometries. We prove a criterion for when such a group is determined by a group of automorphisms acting on a cubic fourfold, and apply it to our classification. Our proof is computer aided.

Residual finiteness of some automorphism groups of high dimensional manifolds

Abstract:We show that for a smooth, closed 2-connected manifold $M$ of dimension $d \geq 6$, the topological mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is residually finite, in contrast to the situation for the smooth mapping class group $\pi_0 \mathrm{Diff}(M)$. Combined with a result of Sullivan, this implies that $\pi_0 \mathrm{Homeo}(M)$ is an arithmetic group. The proof uses embedding calculus, and is of independent interest: we show that the $T_k$-mapping class group, $\pi_0 T_k \mathrm{Diff}(M)$, is residually finite, for all $k \in \mathbb{N}$. The statement on the topological mapping class group is then deduced from the Weiss fibre sequence, convergence of the embedding calculus tower and smoothing theory.
