Abstract:We prove a finiteness theorem for subgroups of bounded rank in hyperbolic $3$-manifold groups. As a consequence, we show that every bounded rank covering tower of closed hyperbolic $3$-manifolds is a tower of finite covers associated to a fibration over a $1$-orbifold.

Abstract:We consider 3-manifolds admitting the action of an involution such that its space of orbits is homeomorphic to $S^3.$ Such involutions are called \textit{hyperelliptic} as the manifolds admitting such an action. We prove that the sectional 2-rank of a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution with fixed-point set with two components has sectional 2-rank at most four; this upper bound is sharp. The cases where the hyperelliptic involution has a fixed-point set with a number of components different from 2 have been already considered in literature. Our result completes the analysis and we obtain some general results where the number of the components of the fixed-point set is not fixed. In particular, we obtain that a finite group acting on a 3-manifold and containing a hyperelliptic involution has 2-rank at most four, and four is the best possible upper bound. Finally, we restrict to the basic case of simple groups acting on hyperelliptic 3-manifolds: we use our result about the sectional 2-rank to prove that a simple group containing a hyperelliptic involution is isomorphic to $PSL(2,q)$ for some odd prime power $q$, or to one of four other small simple groups.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the growth of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds. Some relationships between the growth of fundamental groups and the volume growth of universal covers of Finsler manifolds are found. Some estimates of entropies and the number of generators of fundamental groups of Finsler manifolds are given. Moreover, the quasi-isometry and the geometric norm in Finsler geometry are considered.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a compact connected orientable Seifert manifold with hyperbolic orbifold $B_M$, and $f_{\pi}: \pi_1(M)\rightarrow\pi_1(M)$ be an automorphism induced by an orientation-reversing homeomorphism $f$ of $M$. We give a bound on the rank of the fixed subgroup of $f_{\pi}$, namely, $\rank\fix(f_{\pi})<2\rank \pi_1(M)$, which is similar to the inequalities on surface groups and hyperbolic 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:The set of equivalence classes of cobounded actions of a group G on different hyperbolic metric spaces carries a natural partial order. Following Abbott--Balasubramanya--Osin, the group G is H--accessible if the resulting poset has a largest element. In this paper, we prove that every non-geometric 3--manifold has a finite cover with H--inaccessible fundamental group and give conditions under which the fundamental group of the original manifold is H--inaccessible. We also prove that every Croke--Kleiner admissible group (a class of graphs of groups that generalizes fundamental groups of 3--dimensional graph manifolds) has a finite index subgroup that is H--inaccessible.

Abstract:For $G$ and $H_1,\dots, H_n$ finite groups, does there exist a $3$-manifold group with $G$ as a quotient but no $H_i$ as a quotient? We answer all such questions in terms of the group cohomology of finite groups. We prove non-existence with topological results generalizing the theory of semicharacteristics. To prove existence of 3-manifolds with certain finite quotients but not others, we use a probabilistic method, by first proving a formula for the distribution of the (profinite completion of) the fundamental group of a random 3-manifold in the Dunfield-Thurston model of random Heegaard splittings as the genus goes to infinity. We believe this is the first construction of a new distribution of random groups from its moments.

On a generalization of Cannon's conjecture for cubulated hyperbolic groups

Abstract:We show that cubulated hyperbolic groups with spherical boundary of dimension 3 or at least 5 are virtually fundamental groups of closed, orientable, aspherical manifolds, provided that there are sufficiently many quasi-convex, codimension-1 subgroups whose limit sets are locally flat subspheres. The proof is based on ideas used by Markovic in his work on Cannon's conjecture for cubulated hyperbolic groups with 2-sphere boundary.

Abstract:We study several explicit finite index subgroups in the known complex hyperbolic lattice triangle groups, and show some of them are neat, some of them have positive first Betti number, some of them have a homomorphisms onto a non-Abelian free group. For some lattice triangle groups, we determine the minimal index of a neat subgroup. Finally, we answer a question raised by Stover and describe an infinite tower of neat ball quotients all with a single cusp.

Abstract:For any orientable finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold, this paper proves that the profinite isomorphism type of the fundamental group uniquely determines the isomorphism type of the first integral cohomology, as marked with the Thurston norm and the fibered classes; moreover, up to finite ambiguity, the profinite isomorphism type determines the isomorphism type of the fundamental group, among the class of finitely generated 3-manifold groups.

Abstract:A group $G$ is called subgroup conjugacy separable if for every pair of non-conjugate finitely generated subgroups of $G$, there exists a finite quotient of $G$ where the images of these subgroups are not conjugate. It is proved that the fundamental group of a hyperbolic 3-manifold (closed or with cusps) is subgroup conjugacy separable.

Abstract:In 1996, Gersten proved that finitely presented subgroups of a word hyperbolic group of integral cohomological dimension 2 are hyperbolic. We use isoperimetric inequalities over arbitrary rings to extend this result to any ring. In particular, we study the discrete isoperimetric function and show that its linearity is equivalent to hyperbolicity, which is also equivalent to it being subquadratic. We further use these ideas to obtain conditions for subgroups of higher rank hyperbolic groups to be again higher rank hyperbolic of the same rank. The appendix discusses the equivalence between isoperimetric inequalities and coning inequalities in the simplicial setting and the general setting, leading to combinatorial definitions of higher rank hyperbolicity in the setting of simplicial complexes and allowing us to give elementary definitions of higher rank hyperbolic groups.

Abstract: We study noncompact, complete, finite volume, Riemannian 4-manifolds $M$ with sectional curvature $-1<K<0$. We prove that $\pi_1 M$ cannot be a 3-manifold group. A classical theorem of Gromov says that $M$ is homeomorphic to the interior of a compact manifold $\M$ with boundary $\partial\barM$. We show that for each $\pi_1$-injective boundary component $C$ of $\M$, the map $i_*$ induced by inclusion $i\colon C\rightarrow \M$ has infinite index image $i_*(\pi_1 C)$ in $\pi_1 \M$. We also prove that $M$ cannot be homotoped to be contained in $\partial\M$.

Abstract:Abstract. We show that a Kleinian surface group, or hyperbolic 3-manifold with a cusp-preserving homotopy-equivalence to a surface, has bounded geometry if and only if there is an upper bound on an associated collection of coefficients that depend only on its end invariants. Bounded geometry is a positive lower bound on the lengths of closed geodesics. When the surface is a once-punctured torus, the coefficients coincide with the continued fraction coefficients associated to the ending laminations.

Abstract:The flat-rank of a totally disconnected, locally compact group G is an integer, which is an invariant of G as a topological group. We generalize the concept of hyperbolic groups to the topological context and show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, hyperbolic group has flat-rank at most 1. It follows that the simple totally disconnected locally compact groups constructed by Paulin and Haglund have flat-rank at most 1.

Abstract:We prove that the topological complexity of a finite index subgroup of a hyperbolic group is linear in its index. This follows from a more general result relating the size of the quotient of a free cocompact action of hyperbolic group on a graph to the minimal number of cells in a simplicial classifying space for the group. As a corollary we prove that any two isomorphic finite-index subgroups of a non-elementary hyperbolic group have the same index.

Abstract:We study Frattini subgroups of various generalizations of hyperbolic groups. For any countable group $G$ admitting a general type action on a hyperbolic space $S$, we show that the induced action of the Frattini subgroup $\Phi(G)$ on $S$ has bounded orbits. This implies that $\Phi(G)$ is "small" compared to $G$; in particular, $|G:\Phi(G)|=\infty$. In contrast, for any finitely generated non-cyclic group $Q$ with $\Phi(Q)=\{ 1\}$, we construct an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group $L$ such that $L/\Phi(L)\cong Q$; in particular, the Frattini subgroup of an infinite lacunary hyperbolic group can have finite index. As an application, we obtain the first examples of invariably generated, infinite, lacunary hyperbolic groups.

Abstract:For each natural number n >= 4, we determine the unique lowest volume hyperbolic 3-orbifold whose torsion orders are bounded below by n. This lowest volume orbifold has base space the 3-sphere and singular locus the figure-8 knot, marked n. We apply this result to give sharp lower bounds on the volume of a hyperbolic manifold in terms of the order of elements in its symmetry group.
