Abstract:Encoding information onto optical fields is the backbone of modern telecommunication networks. Optical fibers offer low loss transport and vast bandwidth compared to electrical cables, and are currently also replacing coaxial cables for short-range communications. Optical fibers also exhibit significantly lower thermal conductivity, making optical interconnects attractive for interfacing with superconducting circuits and devices. Yet little is known about modulation at cryogenic temperatures. Here we demonstrate a proof-of-principle experiment, showing that currently employed Ti-doped LiNbO modulators maintain the Pockels coefficient at 3K---a base temperature for classical microwave amplifier circuitry. We realize electro-optical read-out of a superconducting electromechanical circuit to perform both coherent spectroscopy, measuring optomechanically-induced transparency, and incoherent thermometry, encoding the thermomechanical sidebands in an optical signal. Although the achieved noise figures are high, approaches that match the lower-bandwidth microwave signals, use integrated devices or materials with higher EO coefficient, should achieve added noise similar to current HEMT amplifiers, providing a route to parallel readout for emerging quantum or classical computing platforms.

Abstract:Broadband, energy-efficient signal transfer between a cryogenic and room-temperature environment has been a major bottleneck for superconducting quantum and classical logic circuits. Photonic links promise to overcome this challenge by offering simultaneous high bandwidth and low thermal load. However, the development of cryogenic electro-optic modulators—a key component for the photonic readout of electrical signals—has been stifled by the stringent requirements of superconducting circuits. Rapid single-flux-quantum circuits, for example, operate with a tiny signal amplitude of only a few millivolts, far below the volt-level signal used in conventional circuits. Here we demonstrate one of the first direct optical readouts of a rapid single-flux-quantum circuit without additional electrical amplification enabled by a novel superconducting electro-optic modulator featuring a record-low half-wave voltage V π of 42 mV on a 1-m-long superconducting electro-optic modulator. Leveraging the low ohmic loss of superconductors, we break the fundamental V π –bandwidth trade-off and demonstrate an electro-optic bandwidth up to 17 GHz on a 0.2-m-long superconducting electro-optic modulator at cryogenic temperatures. Our work presents a viable solution towards high-bandwidth signal transfer between future large-scale superconducting circuits and room-temperature electronics.

A low-power integrated magneto-optic modulator on silicon for cryogenic applications

Abstract:A fundamental challenge of the quantum revolution is to efficiently interface the quantum computing systems operating at cryogenic temperatures with room temperature electronics and media for high data-rate communication. Current approaches to control and readout of such cryogenic computing systems use electrical cables, which prevent scalability due to their large size, heat conduction, and limited bandwidth1. A more viable approach is to use optical fibers which allow high-capacity transmission and thermal isolation. A key component in implementing photonic datalinks is a cryogenic optical modulator for converting data from the electrical to the optical domain at high speed and with low power consumption, while operating at temperatures of 4 K or lower. Cryogenic modulators based on the electro-optic effect have been demonstrated in a variety of material platforms, however they are voltage driven components while superconducting circuits are current based, resulting in a large impedance mismatch. Here, we present the first demonstration of an integrated current-driven modulator based on the magneto-optic effect operating over a wide temperature range that extends down to less than 4 K. The modulator works at data rates up to 2 Gbps with energy consumption below 4 pJ/bit, and we show that this figure can be reduced to less than 40 fJ/bit with optimized design and fabrication. This modulator is a hybrid device, where a current-driven magneto-optically active crystal (cerium substituted yttrium iron garnet, or Ce:YIG) is bonded to a high-quality silicon microring resonator. Because of its potential for extremely low power consumption under cryogenic conditions, the class of magneto-optical modulators demonstrated here has the potential to enable efficient data links in large-scale systems for quantum information processing.

Abstract:Cryogenic data transfer has numerous applications at 4.2 K for extracting data from supercomputers and quantum computers to address interface bottlenecks. The external modulation of data transmission across temperature zones is achieved through the use of electro-optic modulators. The performance of a thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) Mach-Zehnder modulator was examined at cryogenic temperatures. Low-frequency measurements indicate that the Vπ (voltage needed for π phase shift) of the modulator increases as the temperature decreases from 298 K to 4.2 K. A comparison was conducted between the readout performance of the electrical wire link and the optical fiber link, spanning from 4.2 K to 298 K. Additionally, high-speed data transmission was successfully demonstrated in a 4.2 K environment without the need for cryogenic electric amplifiers, achieving signals of up to 30 Gbps. The proposed solution holds potential benefits for both classical and quantum computers in alleviating interface bottlenecks.

Abstract:Free-space optics (FSO) in the mid-infrared (mid-IR) contains rich spectral resources for future ultrahigh-speed wireless communications yet is currently under-exploited. Two atmospheric transmission windows at the mid-IR, namely, the mid-wave IR (MWIR, 3–5 μm) and the long-wave IR (LWIR, 8–12 μm), show great potential in supporting free-space communications for both terrestrial and space application scenarios. Particularly, the LWIR signal with a longer wavelength has high intrinsic robustness against aerosols’ scattering and turbulence-induced scintillation and beam broadening effects, which are the main concerns hindering the wide deployment of practical FSO systems. In this context, high-bandwidth semiconductor-based mid-IR FSO transceivers will be desirable to meet the requirements of low energy consumption and small footprints for large-volume development and deployment. Quantum cascade devices, including quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) and quantum cascade detectors (QCDs), appear promising candidates to fulfill this role. In this work, we report a high-speed LWIR FSO transmission demonstration with a 9.6-μm directly-modulated (DM)-QCL and a fully passive QCD without any active cooling or bias voltage. Up to 8 Gb/s, 10 Gb/s, and 11 Gb/s signal transmissions are achieved when operating the DM-QCL at 10 °C, 5 °C, and 0 °C, respectively. These results indicate a significant step towards an envisioned fully-connected mid-IR FSO solution empowered by the quantum cascade semiconductor devices.

Abstract:Scalable, low power, high speed data transfer between cryogenic (0.1-4 K) and room temperature environments is essential for the realization of practical, large-scale systems based on superconducting technologies. A promising approach to overcome the limitations of conventional wire-based readout is the use of optical fiber communication. Optical fiber presents a 100-1,000x lower heat load than conventional electrical wiring, relaxing the requirements for thermal anchoring, and is also immune to electromagnetic interference, which allows routing of sensitive signals with improved robustness to noise and crosstalk. Most importantly, optical fibers allow for very high bandwidth densities (in the Tbps/mm2 range) by carrying multiple signals through the same physical fiber (Wavelength Division Multiplexing, WDM). Here, we demonstrate for the first time optical readout of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) directly coupled to a CMOS photonic modulator, without the need for an interfacing device. By operating the modulator in the forward bias regime at a temperature of 3.6 K, we achieve very high modulation efficiency (1,000-10,000 pm/V) and a low input impedance of 500 Ω with a low power dissipation of 40 μW. This allows us to obtain optical modulation with the low, millivolt-level signal generated by the SNSPD.

Abstract:Advanced electro-optic processing combines electrical control with optical modulation and detection. For quantum photonic applications these processes must be carried out at the single photon level with high efficiency and low noise. Integrated quantum photonics has made great strides achieving single photon manipulation by combining key components on integrated chips which are operated by external driving electronics. Nevertheless, electrical interconnects between driving electronics and the electro-optic components, some of which require cryogenic operating conditions, can introduce parasitic effects. Here we show an all-optical interface which simultaneously delivers the operation power to, and extracts the measurement signal from, an advanced photonic circuit, namely, bias and readout of a superconducting nanowire single photon detector (SNSPD) on a single stage in a 1K cryostat. To do so, we supply all power for the single photon detector, output signal conditioning, and electro-optic readout using optical interconnects alone, thereby fully decoupling the cryogenic circuitry from the external environment. This removes the need to heatsink electrical connections, and potentially offers low-loss, high-bandwidth signal processing. This method opens the possibility to operate other advanced electrically decoupled photonic circuits such as optical control and readout of superconducting circuits, and feedforward for photonic quantum computing.

Abstract:A number of critical active and passive components of optical links have been tested at 77 K or lower temperatures, demonstrating potential development of optical links operating inside the liquid argon time projection chamber (LArTPC) detector cryostat. A ring oscillator, individual MOSFETs, and a high speed 16:1 serializer fabricated in a commercial 0.25-um silicon-on-sapphire CMOS technology continued to function from room temperature to 4.2 K, 15 K, and 77 K respectively. Three types of laser diodes lase from room temperature to 77 K. Optical fibers and optical connectors exhibited minute attenuation changes from room temperature to 77 K.

Abstract:Reliable operation of photonic integrated circuits at cryogenic temperatures would enable new capabilities for emerging computing platforms, such as quantum technologies and low-power cryogenic computing. The silicon-on-insulator platform is a highly promising approach to developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits due to its exceptional manufacturability, CMOS compatibility and high component density. Fast, efficient and low-loss modulation at cryogenic temperatures in silicon, however, remains an outstanding challenge, particularly without the addition of exotic nonlinear optical materials. In this paper, we demonstrate DC-Kerr-effect-based modulation at a temperature of 5 K at GHz speeds, in a silicon photonic device fabricated exclusively within a CMOS process. This work opens up the path for the integration of DC Kerr modulators in large-scale photonic integrated circuits for emerging cryogenic classical and quantum computing applications.

All-optical single-shot readout of a superconducting qubit

Abstract:The rapid development of superconducting quantum hardware is expected to run into significant I/O restrictions due to the need for large-scale error correction in a cryogenic environment. Classical data centers rely on fiber-optic interconnects to remove similar networking bottlenecks and to allow for reconfigurable, software-defined infrastructures. In the same spirit, ultra-cold electro-optic links have been proposed and used to generate qubit control signals, or to replace cryogenic readout electronics. So far, the latter suffered from either low efficiency, low bandwidth and the need for additional microwave drives, or breaking of Cooper pairs and qubit states. In this work we realize electro-optic microwave photonics at millikelvin temperatures to implement a radio-over-fiber qubit readout that does not require any active or passive cryogenic microwave equipment. We demonstrate all-optical single-shot-readout by means of the Jaynes-Cummings nonlinearity in a circulator-free readout scheme. Importantly, we do not observe any direct radiation impact on the qubit state as verified with high-fidelity quantum-non-demolition measurements despite the absence of shielding elements. This compatibility between superconducting circuits and telecom wavelength light is not only a prerequisite to establish modular quantum networks, it is also relevant for multiplexed readout of superconducting photon detectors and classical superconducting logic. Moreover, this experiment showcases the potential of electro-optic radiometry in harsh environments - an electronics-free sensing principle that extends into the THz regime with applications in radio astronomy, planetary missions and earth observation.

Supercurrent Multiplexing with Solid-State Integrated Hybrid Superconducting Electronics

Abstract:Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) of cryogenic signal lines is a promising technique that can significantly reduce the required space, minimize the cooldown time, and increase the number of measurable quantum devices per cooldown. Here, we report the TDM of supercurrent with a 1-input-8-outputs voltage-actuated hybrid superconducting demultiplexer for the first time. The device comprises 14 ON/OFF InAsOI-based superconducting Josephson Field Effect Transistors (JoFETs) routed with Al traces. Each JoFET features Al as a superconductor and HfO2 as a gate insulator, and it can entirely suppress the switching current and increase the normal-state resistance by 20 times with a gate voltage of -4.5 V. The superconducting demultiplexer operates up to 100 MHz at 50 mK, features an insertion loss of ~ 0 dB in the superconducting state, and an OFF/ON ratio of ~ 17.5 dB in a 50-Ohm-matched cryogenic measurement setup. The frequency operation range can be extended by designing the demultiplexer with a proper microwave signal transport layout minimizing, at the same time, the impact of the parasitic electrical elements. These achievements open up the practical implementation of superconducting TDM as a key to drastically reducing I/O lines, costs, and space occupation in a cryostat, enabling the scalability of superconducting electronics.

Non-volatile Tuning of Cryogenic Optical Resonators

Abstract:Quantum computing, ultra-low-noise sensing, and high-energy physics experiments often rely on superconducting circuits or semiconductor qubits and devices operating at deep cryogenic temperatures (4K and below). Photonic integrated circuits and interconnects have been demonstrated for scalable communications and optical domain transduction in these systems. Due to energy and area constraints, many of these devices need enhanced light-matter interaction, provided by photonic resonators. A key challenge, however, for using these resonators is the sensitivity of resonance wavelength to process variations and thermal fluctuations. While thermo-optical tuning methods are typically employed at room temperature to mitigate this problem, the thermo-optic effect is ineffective at 4K. To address this issue, we demonstrate a non-volatile approach to tune the resonance of photonic resonators using integrated phase-change materials (PCMs) at cryogenic temperatures. In this work, we report a 10Gb/s free-carrier dispersion based resonant photonic modulator that can be tuned in a non-volatile fashion at sub-4K temperatures using a commercial silicon photonics process. This method paves the way for realizing scalable cryogenic integrated photonics with thousands of resonant devices for quantum and high-energy physics applications.

Cryogenic fiber-coupled electro-optic characterization platform for high-speed photodiodes

Abstract:We have developed a cryogenic characterization platform for ultrafast photodiodes, whose time domain responses are extracted by electro-optic sampling using femtosecond laser pulses in a pump-probe configuration. The excitation of the photodiodes with the pump beam and the electro-optic sampling crystals with the probe beam are realized in a fully fiber-coupled manner. This allows us to place the characterization platform in almost any temperature environment. As application example, we characterize the time-domain response of commercial p-i-n photodiodes with a nominal bandwidth of 20 GHz and 60 GHz at temperatures of 4 K and 300 K and in a large parameter range of photocurrent and reverse bias. For these photodiodes, we detect frequency components up to approximately 250 GHz, while the theoretical bandwidth of our sampling method exceeds 1 THz. Our measurements demonstrate a significant excitation power and temperature dependence of the photodiodes' ultrafast time responses, reflecting, most likely, changes in carrier mobilities and electric field screening. Since our system is an ideal tool to characterize and optimize the response of fast photodiodes at cryogenic temperatures, it has direct impact on applications in superconducting quantum technology such as the enhancement of optical links to superconducting qubits and quantum-accurate waveform generators.

Cryogenic Optical Packaging Using Photonic Wire Bonds

Abstract:We present the required techniques for the successful low loss packaging of integrated photonic devices capable of operating down to 970 mK utilizing photonic wire bonds. This scalable technique is shown to have an insertion loss of less than 2 dB per connection between a SMF-28 single mode fibre and a silicon photonic chip at these temperatures. This technique has shown robustness to thermal cycling and is ultra-high vacuum compatible without the need for any active alignment.

Abstract:Recent developments in quantum light-matter coupled systems and quantum transducers have highlighted the need for cryogenic optical measurements. In this study, we present a mechanically-rigid fiber-optic coupler with a coupling efficiency of over 50% for telecom wavelength light at cryogenic temperatures. Our method enables sensitive photonic device measurements that are alignment-free and immune to mechanical vibrations in cryogenic setups.

Quantum limits of superconducting-photonic links and their extension to mm-waves

Abstract:Photonic addressing of superconducting circuits has been proposed to overcome wiring complexity and heat load challenges, but superconducting-photonic links suffer from an efficiency-noise trade-off that limits scalability. This trade-off arises because increasing power conversion efficiency requires reducing optical power, which makes the converted signal susceptible to shot noise. We analyze this trade-off and find the infidelity of qubit gates driven by photonic signals scales inversely with the number of photons used, and therefore the power efficiency of the converter. While methods like nonlinear detection or squeezed light could mitigate this effect, we consider generating higher frequency electrical signals, such as millimeter-waves (100 GHz), using laser light. At these higher frequencies, circuits have higher operating temperatures and cooling power budgets. We demonstrate an optically-driven cryogenic millimeter-wave source with a power efficiency of $10^{-4}$ that can generate ${1}~\mathrm{\mu W}$ of RF power at 80 GHz with 1500 thermal photons of added noise at 4 K. Using this source, we perform frequency-domain spectroscopy of superconducting NbTiN resonators at 80-90 GHz. Our results show a promising approach to alleviate the efficiency-noise constraints on optically-driven superconducting circuits while leveraging the benefits of photonic signal delivery. Further optimization of power efficiency and noise at high frequencies could make photonic control of superconducting qubits viable at temperatures exceeding 1 kelvin.

Abstract:In this study, a new processing design of an optical fiber cryogenic temperature sensor (OFCTS) is presented. The sensing unit is constituted by NaYF4:Yb3+, Er3+@NaYF4 core-shell upconversion nanocrystals-polymethyl methacrylate (UCNCs-PMMA) nanocomposites. The coupling is achieved by fiber fusion in the embodiment. The relative sensitivity of the OFCTS can reach the maximal value 13.241×10-3 K-1 at 80 K in a cryogenic environment, and stability is good with a standard deviation of 0.012. Research results show that the proposed OFCTS has good temperature responses at the cryogenic environment, and has a great potential of the superconducting application for generator, transmission line, maglev train and quantum interferometer.

Abstract:A number of current approaches to quantum and neuromorphic computing use superconductors as the basis of their platform or as a measurement component, and will need to operate at cryogenic temperatures. Semiconductor systems are typically proposed as a top-level control in these architectures, with low-temperature passive components and intermediary superconducting electronics acting as the direct interface to the lowest-temperature stages. The architectures, therefore, require a low-power superconductor-semiconductor interface, which is not currently available. Here we report a superconducting switch that is capable of translating low-voltage superconducting inputs directly into semiconductor-compatible (above 1,000 mV) outputs at kelvin-scale temperatures (1 K or 4 K). To illustrate the capabilities in interfacing superconductors and semiconductors, we use it to drive a light-emitting diode (LED) in a photonic integrated circuit, generating photons at 1 K from a low-voltage input and detecting them with an on-chip superconducting single-photon detector. We also characterize our device's timing response (less than 300 ps turn-on, 15 ns turn-off), output impedance (greater than 1 M{\Omega}), and energy requirements (0.18 fJ/um^2, 3.24 mV/nW).
