Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) has attracted much attention as anode for high-energy-density batteries because of its ultrahigh specific capacity (3860mAhg−1) and the lowest electrochemical potential. Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth gives rise to serious safety hazards with poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets modified electrodes are designed to inhabit Li dendrite growth with improved electrochemical performance. Due to high surface area and plentiful polar surface functional groups, MOF nanosheets possess enhanced electrolyte uptake capabilities and improved adhesive interactions with Li-ions, which facilitates well-distributed homogeneous Li ionic flux. A remarkable coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 180 cycles at a current density of 2.0mAcm−2 and a cycle capacity of 1.0mAhcm−2 is achieved. This study may pave a way for obtaining high-performance metallic Li batteries with a wide variety of MOFs-based materials.
Interface-Modulated Approach Toward Multilevel Metal Oxide Nanotubes for Lithium-Ion Batteries and Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Abstract:Metal oxide hollow structures with multilevel interiors are of great interest for potential applications such as catalysis, chemical sensing, drug delivery, and energy storage. However, the controlled synthesis of multilevel nanotubes remains a great challenge. Here we develop a facile interface-modulated approach toward the synthesis of complex metal oxide multilevel nanotubes with tunable interior structures through electrospinning followed by controlled heat treatment. This versatile strategy can be effectively applied to fabricate wire-in-tube and tube-in-tube nanotubes of various metal oxides. These multilevel nanotubes possess a large specific surface area, fast mass transport, good strain accommodation, and high packing density, which are advantageous for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Specifically, shrinkable CoMn2O4 tube-in-tube nanotubes as a lithium-ion battery anode deliver a high discharge capacity of ~565 mAh·g−1 at a high rate of 2 A·g−1, maintaining 89% of the latter after 500 cycles. Further, as an oxygen reduction reaction catalyst, these nanotubes also exhibit excellent stability with about 92% current retention after 30,000 s, which is higher than that of commercial Pt/C (81%). Therefore, this feasible method may push the rapid development of one-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials. These multifunctional nanotubes have great potential in many frontier fields.

Abstract:We report a facile, two-step hydrothermal synthesis of a novel Co3O4/α-Fe2O3 branched nanowire heterostructure, which can serve as a good candidate for lithium-ion battery anodes with high Li+ storage capacity and stability. The single-crystalline, primary Co3O4 nanowire trunk arrays directly grown on Ti substrates allow for efficient electrical and ionic transport. The secondary α-Fe2O3 branches provide enhanced surface area and high theoretical Li+ storage capacity, and can also serve as volume spacers between neighboring Co3O4 NW arrays to maintain electrolyte penetration as well as reduce the aggregation during Li+ intercalation, thus leading to improved electrochemical energy storage performance.
Self-supported hierarchical hollow-branch cobalt oxide nanorod arrays as binder-free electrodes for high-performance lithium ion batteries

Abstract:In this work, hierarchical hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays are synthesized by an electrodeposited template method. Interestingly, the as-prepared hierarchical CoO arrays possess combined properties of hollow core and interconnected nanosheet branches. As anode for lithium ion batteries, the hollow-branch CoO nanorod arrays exhibit impressive electrochemical performances with good cyclability and high-rate capability due to the unique hollow-branch architecture with fast ion/electron transfer path and sufficient contact between active materials and electrolyte. The developed methodology enables a new fabrication of hierarchical hollow metal oxides with applications in electro-catalysis, optical and electrochemical devices.

Abstract:Aiming to achieve metal-oxide-based electrodes for Li-ion batteries with enhanced energy density and cycling life, especially overcoming their negative volume expansion during cycling, more effort should be devoted to the exploration of the combination of morphology-controlled metal oxides with carbonaceous materials. In this work, we select dual/single-metallic organic frameworks immobilized on the surface of carbon nanotubes as the precursors to synthesize composites of ternary/single metal oxides with carbon nanotubes (ZnCo2O4@CNTs and ZnO@CNTs). The main product, ZnCo2O4@CNTs, consists of ultrafine ZnCo2O4 nanoparticles embedded deeply in the carbon nanotubes. The existence of small-size ternary metal oxides as well as the carbon nanotubes results in outstanding lithium-storage properties of the ZnCo2O4@CNT anode for lithium-ion batteries. It delivers an extremely high capacity (1507 mA h g(-1), 100 mA g(-1)) after 200 cycles, which is larger than the theoretical value.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides are promising candidates for the high-capacity anode material in lithium-ion batteries. The electrochemical performance of transition metal oxides can be improved by constructing suitable composite architectures. Herein, we demonstrate a metal–organic framework (MOF)-assisted strategy for the synthesis of a hierarchical hybrid nanostructure composed of Fe2O3 nanotubes assembled in Co3O4 host. Starting from MOF composite precursors (Fe-based MOF encapsulated in a Co-based host matrix), a complex structure of Co3O4 host and engulfed Fe2O3 nanotubes was prepared by a simple annealing treatment in air. By virtue of their structural and compositional features, these hierarchical composite particles reveal enhanced lithium storage properties when employed as anodes for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have many promising applications in energy and environmental areas such as gas separation, catalysis, supercapacitors, and batteries; the key toward those applications is controlled pyrolysis which can tailor the porous structure, improve electrical conductivity, and expose metal ions in MOFs. Here, we present a systematic study on the structural evolution of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks hybridized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the carbonization process. We show that a number of typical products can be obtained, depending on the annealing time, including (1) CNTs wrapped by relatively thick carbon layers, (2) CNTs grafted by ZnO nanoparticles which are covered by thin nitrogen-doped carbon layers, and (3) CNTs grafted by aggregated ZnO nanoparticles. We also investigated the electrochemical properties of those hybrid structures as freestanding membrane electrodes for lithium ion batteries, and the second one (CNT-supported ZnO covered by N-doped carbon) shows the best performance with a high specific capacity (850 mA h/g at a current density of 100 mA/g) and excellent cycling stability. Our results indicate that tailoring and optimizing the MOF-CNT hybrid structure is essential for developing high-performance energy storage systems.

Abstract:The design and fabrication of novel material architectures via versatile strategy become one of the most fascinating research topics due to their fantastic properties. Specifically, the popular metal-organic-framework provides a rational strategy to overcome intrinsic limitations of existing synthetic methods for nanostructures. Herein, an intriguing kind of hollow In2O3/C porous hexagonal nanorods is presented for the application in lithium ion battery anodes, by a controlled one-step annealing process. The structural advantages of these materials are that the one-dimensional hollow porous nanorod structures can provide decreased lithium ions diffusion and electron transport lengths, more favorable pathways for efficient penetration of electrolyte, the numerous mesopores that could act as reservoirs for storing Li+, and also the ability to release the large volume expansion during charge/discharge. Additionally, carbon coating formed in situ can minimize the volume changes of In2O3, and act as an efficient electrical conducting pathway. This proposed anode delivers outstanding Li-storage capacity of 1078 mA h g(-1) and rate capability even to the current density of 2000 mA g(-1). The outstanding long-term stability (425 mA h g(-1) after 1000 cycles at 1000 mA g(-1)) further demonstrates its prominent properties.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an ideal class of precursors or templates to build up transition metal based composites with unique architectures and high electrochemical performance for energy storage applications. In this work, a hybrid hollow nanoarchitecture made of ultrasmall zinc oxide nanodots (less than 5 nm in diameter) and carbon with 3D ordered hollow structure have been synthesized through a simple surfactant-assisted hydrothermal method followed by thermal annealing treatment. This 3D ordered hollow structure not only offers good electronic transportation routes and ionic conductive channels, but also effectively relieves the stress and mitigates the volume variation during lithiation/delithiation process as reflected by the high cycle stability and excellent rate capability as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Benefitting from the rational design of 3D hollow structure and the synergistic effect between the ultrasmall ZnO nanodots and carbon framework, the ZnO/C hollow structures exhibit decent electrochemical performance of lithium storage with excellent cycling stability (a reversible capacity of 919 mA h/g over 100 cycles at 100 mA/g) and enhanced rate capability (567 mA h/g at high current density of 2 A/g). In addition, it also can deliver a capacity of 741 mA h/g at 500 mA/g after 120 cycles. These results uncover a facile route for the material design for energy application. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:High-performance electrochemical energy storage (EES) devices require the ability to modify and assemble electrode materials with superior reactivity and structural stability. The fabrication of different oxide/metal core-branch nanoarrays with adjustable components and morphologies (e.g., nanowire and nanoflake) is reported on different conductive substrates. Hollow metal branches (or shells) wrapped around oxide cores are realized by electrodeposition using ZnO nanorods as a sacrificial template. In battery electrode application, the thin hollow metal branches can provide a mechanical protection of the oxide core and a highly conductive path for charges. As a demonstration, arrays of Co3O4/Ni core-branch nanowires are evaluated as the anode for lithium ion batteries. The thin metal branches evidently improve the electrochemical performance with higher specific capacity, rate capability, and capacity retention than the unmodified Co3O4 counterparts.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are the newly crystalline porous materials with outstanding structural, compositional, and morphological features, which have garnered much attention in all dimensions of major scientific and engineering fields, including energy storage and conversion. Various pristine MOFs and their derivatives have been developed and used as anode materials in lithium–ion batteries (LIBs). In this review, we specifically focused on MOFs–derived nanostructured metal oxides with diverse structural and compositional features that exhibit exceptional lithium storage capacity. These intriguing nanostructures inherit the multidimensional structure of MOF and the advantage of even distribution of metallic species after thermal decomposition, which facilitates fast reaction kinetics of lithium transportation and ultimately improves the battery performance. Herein, we review and categorise the synthetic strategies to achieve various transitional metal oxide nanostructures/composites obtained from BDC/BTC–based MOFs (H2BDC = 1,4–benzenedicarboxylic acid, H3BTC = 1,3,5–benzenetricarboxylic acid), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues (PB and PBAs), and other unusual porous crystalline MOF materials. In addition, we will also compare the electrochemical performances of various metal oxides (MOs) nanostructures obtained via heteroatom doping in the pristine MOF precursor or by tuning their structure. Finally, our discussion will focus on the advantages and future developments in design and fabrication of new MOF–derived metal oxide electrode materials with high energy efficiencies in relation with the next generation rechargeable battery applications.

Growth of Copper Oxide Nanocrystals in Metallic Nanotubes for High Performance Battery Anodes.

Abstract:A rational integration of 1D metallic nanotubes and oxide nanoparticles has been demonstrated as a viable strategy for the production of both highly stable and efficient anodes for lithium ion batteries. We encapsulated copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles in ultra-long metallic copper nanotubes with engineered interspaces, and explored their electrochemical properties. Such a hierarchical architecture provides three important features: (i) a continuous nanoscale metallic Cu shell to minimize electronic/ionic transmitting impedance; (ii) a unique quasi-one-dimensional structure with a large aspect ratio to reduce self-aggregation; (iii) free space for volume expansion of CuO nanoparticles and stable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation. The anode materials with such hierarchical structures have high specific capacity (around 600 mA h g-1 at a current density of 0.1 A g-1), excellent cycling stability (over 94% capacity retention after 200 cycles) and superb reversible capacity of 175 mA h g-1 at a high charging rate of 15 A g-1.

Abstract:Co(3)O(4)peration. Porous and polycrystalline Co3O4 nanotubes have been derived from Co-4(CO)(12) clusters on carbon nanotube templates. The prepared porous Co3O4 nanotubes exhibit superior Li-battery performance with good cycle life and high capacity (1200 mAh g(-1)) owing to their hollow structure and small size. Moreover, this approach can be extended to synthesize other porous metal oxide nanotubes.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) featuring versatile topological architectures are considered to be efficient self-sacrificial templates to achieve mesoporous nanostructured materials. A facile and cost-efficient strategy is developed to scalably fabricate binary metal oxides with complex hollow interior structures and tunable compositions. Bimetal-organic frameworks of Ni-Co-BTC solid microspheres with diverse Ni/Co ratios are readily prepared by solvothermal method to induce the Ni x Co3-x O4 multishelled hollow microspheres through a morphology-inherited annealing treatment. The obtained mixed metal oxides are demonstrated to be composed of nanometer-sized subunits in the shells and large void spaces left between adjacent shells. When evaluated as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, Ni x Co3-x O4 -0.1 multishelled hollow microspheres deliver a high reversible capacity of 1109.8 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1 with an excellent high-rate capability. Appropriate capacities of 832 and 673 mAh g-1 could also be retained after 300 cycles at large currents of 1 and 2 A g-1 , respectively. These prominent electrochemical properties raise a concept of synthesizing MOFs-derived mixed metal oxides with multishelled hollow structures for progressive lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Aluminum metal with high capacity has been regarded as a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries but suffers from pulverization and side reactions upon the lithiation and de‐lithiation process, which depend on the rational design and controllable synthesis of nanostructures. Here, it is proposed that ultrathin aluminum nanosheets (Al‐NS) grown on carbon nanotubes as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Based on the preferential Al(111) crystal facet exposure and the rather limited thickness less than 5 nm, the batteries exhibit a high reversible capacity of 990 mAh g −1 at 1 C and an excellent rate capacity of 524.6 mAh g −1 at 24 C, and a long term stability with almost no capacity fading after 500 cycles at high C‐rates of 5, 10, and 20 C. Density functional theory based first principle calculation reveals that the high Young's modulus of Al(111) facet for fast Li + diffusion and composite materials design with carbon nanotubes enable high rate capability and mitigate huge volume change during discharge/charge process. The results prove that ultrathin Al nanosheets can be a low cost and high‐performance anode material for lithium ion batteries.

MOF‐Derived Porous NixFe3‐xO4 Nanotubes with Excellent Performance in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

Abstract:Ni-Fe bimetallic oxide nanotubes with a hollow and porous structure were synthesized by using metal-organic framework (MOF) annealing processes. The Ni/Fe molar ratios in the binary metal oxide were rationally designed. Typically, Ni0.62Fe2.38O4 (called NFO-0.25) nanotubes with a tube shell of around 10nm possess a specific surface area of 134.3m(2)g(-1) and are composed of nanosized primary particles. The lithium-ion battery performance of the nanotube anode was evaluated by galvanostatic and rate cycling. In the half-cell, a high capacity of 1184mAhg(-1) for the NFO-0.25 anode was maintained at a current density of 0.25Ag(-1) after 200 cycles. In addition, the NFO-0.25/LiCoO2 full-cell has a reversible charge capacity of about 94mAhg(-1) with a high coulombic efficiency at the same current density. The feature of hollow and porous structures remarkably buffers the volume variation, and provides more active sites for lithiation-delithiation reactions, resulting in excellent lithium-storage performance.

Abstract:A novel and general strategy for the synthesis of carbon-encapsulated metal oxide hollow nanoparticles (HNPs) and pure metal oxide HNPs Was developed from carbon-encapsulated metal nanoparticles by controlled oxidation in the air. The materials were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction measurements. It was found that the morphologies and compositions of HNPs were easily tailored through adjustment of the oxidation conditions. When used as the anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, carbon-encapsulated alpha-Fe2O3 HNPs exhibit excellent cycling performance and a higher reversible capacity of about 700 mA h g(-1) after the 60th cycle and possess great potential application in lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:MOF-derived CoFe@MnO heterointerfaces embedded in N-doped carbon nanospheres with a hierarchical porous structure achieve excellent ORR (E1/2 = 0.86 V) performance and a large specific capacity (812 mA h g−1) as the cathode for a Zn–air battery.
