Abstract:Metallic lithium (Li) has attracted much attention as anode for high-energy-density batteries because of its ultrahigh specific capacity (3860mAhg−1) and the lowest electrochemical potential. Uncontrolled Li dendrite growth gives rise to serious safety hazards with poor cycle life and low coulombic efficiency. Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets modified electrodes are designed to inhabit Li dendrite growth with improved electrochemical performance. Due to high surface area and plentiful polar surface functional groups, MOF nanosheets possess enhanced electrolyte uptake capabilities and improved adhesive interactions with Li-ions, which facilitates well-distributed homogeneous Li ionic flux. A remarkable coulombic efficiency of 98% for over 180 cycles at a current density of 2.0mAcm−2 and a cycle capacity of 1.0mAhcm−2 is achieved. This study may pave a way for obtaining high-performance metallic Li batteries with a wide variety of MOFs-based materials.

Abstract:We demonstrate the synthesis of Ag–NiO core–shell nanoflower arrays via a one-step solution-immersion process and subsequent RF-sputtering method. The aligned Ag nanoflower arrays on copper substrate are prepared by a facile displacement reaction in absence of any surfactant at a mild temperature. When used as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries, the Ag–NiO core–shell nanoflower arrays show better cycling performance and higher capacity than the planar NiO electrodes. The improved performance should be attributed to the core–shell structures that can enhance the conductivity and accommodate the volume change during the charge–discharge process.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode (LMA) is puzzled by the serious issues corresponding to infinite volume change and notorious lithium dendrite during long-term stripping/plating process. Herein, the transition metal nitrides array with outstanding lithiophilicity, including CoN, VN, and Ni3N, are decorated onto carbon framework as "nests" to uniform Li nucleation and guide Li metal deposition. These transition metal nitrides with excellent conductivity can guarantee the fast electron transport, therefore maintain a stable interface for Li reduction. In addition, the designed multi-dimensional structure of metal nitride array decorated carbon framework can effectively regulate the growth of Li metal during the stripping/plating process. Of note, attributing to the lattice-matching between CoN and Li metal, the composite Li/CoN@CF anode exhibits ultra-stable cycling performance in symmetrical cells (over 4000 h@1 mA cm(-2) with 1 mAh cm(-2) and 1000h@20 mA cm(-2) with 20 mAh cm(-2)). The assembled full cells based on Li/CoN@CF composite anode, LiFePO4 or S as cathodes, deliver excellent cycling stability and rate capability. This strategy provides an effective approach to develop a stable lithium metal anode for lithium metal batteries.

Abstract:Densely vertical-grown NiFe hydroxide nanosheets on a nickel foam (DVS-NFOH@NF) were designed and synthesized for a dendrite-free lithium anode. Abstract:Metal-organic framework materials (MOFs) have great potentials as organic electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries due to their amiable porous structure and property tunability. However, the structure instability and poor electrochemical durability of MOFs hinders their application. An interesting metal–organic composite composed of Ni-MOF and Nickel (II) meso -Tetraphenylporphyin (NiTPP) is strategically proposed and configured in this study. The synergic integration of Ni-MOF and NiTPP presents a stable electrochemical cycling performance with a high retention capacity up to 840 mAh/g after 200 cycles, ascribed to the facilitation of the charge transfer capability and the diffusion kinetics. The configured metal–organic composites provide an explorative approach for organic alternatives for nonaqueous metal-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are the newly crystalline porous materials with outstanding structural, compositional, and morphological features, which have garnered much attention in all dimensions of major scientific and engineering fields, including energy storage and conversion. Various pristine MOFs and their derivatives have been developed and used as anode materials in lithium–ion batteries (LIBs). In this review, we specifically focused on MOFs–derived nanostructured metal oxides with diverse structural and compositional features that exhibit exceptional lithium storage capacity. These intriguing nanostructures inherit the multidimensional structure of MOF and the advantage of even distribution of metallic species after thermal decomposition, which facilitates fast reaction kinetics of lithium transportation and ultimately improves the battery performance. Herein, we review and categorise the synthetic strategies to achieve various transitional metal oxide nanostructures/composites obtained from BDC/BTC–based MOFs (H2BDC = 1,4–benzenedicarboxylic acid, H3BTC = 1,3,5–benzenetricarboxylic acid), zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), Prussian blue and Prussian blue analogues (PB and PBAs), and other unusual porous crystalline MOF materials. In addition, we will also compare the electrochemical performances of various metal oxides (MOs) nanostructures obtained via heteroatom doping in the pristine MOF precursor or by tuning their structure. Finally, our discussion will focus on the advantages and future developments in design and fabrication of new MOF–derived metal oxide electrode materials with high energy efficiencies in relation with the next generation rechargeable battery applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have many promising applications in energy and environmental areas such as gas separation, catalysis, supercapacitors, and batteries; the key toward those applications is controlled pyrolysis which can tailor the porous structure, improve electrical conductivity, and expose metal ions in MOFs. Here, we present a systematic study on the structural evolution of zeolitic imidazolate frameworks hybridized on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) during the carbonization process. We show that a number of typical products can be obtained, depending on the annealing time, including (1) CNTs wrapped by relatively thick carbon layers, (2) CNTs grafted by ZnO nanoparticles which are covered by thin nitrogen-doped carbon layers, and (3) CNTs grafted by aggregated ZnO nanoparticles. We also investigated the electrochemical properties of those hybrid structures as freestanding membrane electrodes for lithium ion batteries, and the second one (CNT-supported ZnO covered by N-doped carbon) shows the best performance with a high specific capacity (850 mA h/g at a current density of 100 mA/g) and excellent cycling stability. Our results indicate that tailoring and optimizing the MOF-CNT hybrid structure is essential for developing high-performance energy storage systems.
Metal–organic framework-derived Co3O4 modified nickel foam-based dendrite-free anode for robust lithium metal batteries

Abstract:For several decades, the promise of implementing of lithium (Li) metal anodes for Li batteries has been a ‘‘holy grail’’ for researchers. Herein, we have proposed a facile design of a MOF-derived Co3O4 nanoparticles modified nickel foam, i.e., Co3O4-NF, as a 3D host to achieve a uniform infusion of the molten Li. The molten Li was uniformly absorbed on the Co3O4-NF host only in 10 s due to its high Li lithiophilicity. The obtained Li-Co3O4-NF composite electrode shows high cycling stability in symmetric cells with low voltage hysteresis even at a high current density of 5 mA/cm2. The full cells of Li-Co3O4-NF/LiFePO4 can cycle for more than 500 cycles at 2C without obvious capacity decay. SEM after cycling and in situ optical microscope results suggest that the unique 3D host structure of the Li-Co3O4-NF anode plays key roles on suppressing the dendrite growth and decreasing the local current inhomogeneity. We believe this work might provide a new strategy for fabricating dendrite-free Li metal anodes and facilitate practical applications in Li batteries.

Abstract:Nanostructure design strategies are highly desired in lithium ion batteries due to the attractive properties of nanosizing. Herein, the hollow octahedra ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites are synthesized through Zn-Fe MOFs as precursor and used as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Notably, ZnFe2O4@C nanocomposites possess unique structure, where ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles (~20 nm) well scatters in each surface of the hollow octahedra carbon skeleton (~600 nm) and are also confined by coating carbon. This structure efficiently avoids particle agglomeration, buffers volume expansion, facilitates electron transfer and shortens diffusion lengths. Benefiting from above advantages, ZnFe2O4@C exhibits excellent electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity (1780 mAh g−1 at 1A g−1 after 400 cycles), superb rate capability (557 mAh g−1 at 15 A g−1) and ultra-long cycling stability (918 mAh g−1 at 3 A g−1 after 800 cycles). As much, this work may develop an effective nanostructure aiding in designing a variety of metal oxide/carbon composites of interest for energy storage applications.

Abstract:As the promising next‐generation energy storage solution lithium metal battery (LMB) has gained great attention but still suffers from troubles associated with the highly active metallic lithium. Herein, we aim to develop anode‐free LMB engaging no Li disk or foil by modifying the Cu current collector with mercapto metal organic frameworks (MOFs) impregnating Ag nanoparticles (NPs). While the polar mercapto groups facilitate and guide Li+ transport, the highly lithiophilic Ag NPs help to enhance the electric conductivity and lower the energy barrier of Li nucleation. Furthermore, the MOF pores allow compartmentalizing bulk Li into a 3D matric Li storage so that not only the local current density is reduced, but also is the plating/stripping reversibility greatly enhanced. As a result, full cells pairing the prelithiated Ag@Zr‐DMBD/Cu anodes with LiFePO4 cathodes demonstrate a high initial specific capacity of 159.8 mAh g−1, first‐cycle Coulombic efficiency of 96.6%, and long‐term cycling stability over 1000 cycles with 99.3% capacity retention at 1C. This study underlines the multi‐aspect functionalization of MOFs to impart lithiophilicity, polarity, and porosity to achieve reversible Li plating/stripping, and paves the way for realizing high‐performance anode‐free LMBs through exquisite modification of the Cu current collector. Ultrathin Manganese-Based Metal-Organic Framework Nanosheets: Low-Cost and Energy-Dense Lithium Storage Anodes with the Coexistence of Metal and Ligand Redox Activities.

Abstract:We herein demonstrate the fabrication of Mn- and Ni-based ultrathin metal-organic framework nanosheets with the same coordination mode (termed "Mn-UMOFNs" and "Ni-UMOFNs", respectively) through an expedient and versatile ultrasonic approach and scrutinize their electrochemical properties as anode materials for rechargeable lithium batteries for the first time. The obtained Mn-UMOFNs with structure advantages over Ni-UMOFNs (thinner nanosheets, smaller metal-ion radius, higher specific surface area) exhibit high reversible capacity (1187 mAh g-1 at 100 mA g-1 for 100 cycles), excellent rate capability (701 mAh g-1 even at 2 A g-1), rapid Li+ diffusion coefficient (2.48 × 10-9 cm2 s-1), and a reasonable charge-discharge profile with low average operating potential at 0.4 V. On the grounds of the low-cost and environmental benignity of Mn metals and terephthalic acid linkers, our Mn-UMOFNs show alluring promise as a low-cost high-energy anode material for future LIBs. Furthermore, the lithiation-delithiation chemistry of Mn-UMOFNs was unequivocally studied by a combination of magnetic measurements, electron paramagnetic resonance, and synchrotron-based soft X-ray spectroscopy (O K-edge and Mn L-edge) experiments, the results of which substantiate that both the aromatic chelating ligands and the Mn2+ centers participate in lithium storage.

Abstract:Structural degradation and low conductivity of transition-metal oxides lead to severe capacity fading in lithium-ion batteries. Recent efforts to solve this issue have mainly focused on using nanocomposites or hybrids by integrating nanosized metal oxides with conducting additives. Here we design specific hierarchical structures and demonstrate their use in flexible, large-area anode assemblies. Fabrication of these anodes is achieved via oxidative growth of copper oxide nanowires onto copper substrates followed by radio-frequency sputtering of carbon-nitride films, forming freestanding three-dimensional arrays with core–shell nano-architecture. Cable-like copper oxide/carbon-nitride core–shell nanostructures accommodate the volume change during lithiation−delithiation processes, the three-dimensional arrays provide abundant electroactive zones and electron/ion transport paths, and the monolithic sandwich-type configuration without additional binders or conductive agents improves energy/power densities of the whole electrode.

Abstract:Hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorods were fabricated via a facile and controllable approach using MOFs (Fe-MIL-88A) as both precursors and sacrificial templates. It has been found that Fe(OH)(3), which is formed on the surface of MOFs after treatment with NaOH solution, plays a significant role in maintaining its morphology during calcination. The interior of well-defined hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorod structures is assembled by interconnected nanoparticles to form a porous structure. As anode materials for Li-ion batteries, the hollow porous Fe2O3 hexagonal nanorods exhibit long-term cycling stability (1219 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles) and ultrahigh rate capability. The high electrochemical performance is attributed to the unique structure and morphology of the hollow porous nanorods.

Abstract:MnO-carbon hybrid nanofiber composites are fabricated by electrospinning polyimide/manganese acetylacetonate precursor and a subsequent carbonization process. The composition, phase structure and morphology of the composites are characterized by scanning and transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. The results indicate that the composites exhibit good nanofibrous morphology with MnO nanoparticles uniformly encapsulated by carbon nanofibers. The hybrid nanofiber composites are used directly as freestanding anodes for lithium-ion batteries to evaluate their electrochemical properties. It is found that the optimized MnO-carbon nanofiber composite can deliver a high reversible capacity of 663mAhg−1, along with excellent cycling stability and good rate capability. The superior performance enables the composites to be promising candidates as an anode alternative for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have received widespread attention for their large specific surface area, porous structure, and tunable particle size. MOFs can be utilized as precursors to prepare structurally diverse bimetallic oxides, which exhibit outstanding electrochemical properties as anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). This paper introduces the study of MOFs as template-derived bimetallic oxides as anode materials for LIBs, focusing on the application of MOFs-derived manganese-, cobalt-, iron-, and vanadium-based bimetallic oxides in LIBs. MOFs-derived bimetallic oxides, with the advantages of tunable compositions and nano-structures, are capable of further contributing to the enhancement of electrochemical performances. Finally, the problems of these derived materials in the application of LIBs are prospected, and reliable solutions and future development prospects are proposed.

Abstract:A general method of preparing nanocomposites from a metal-organic framework coated with hydroxyl, pyrrolyl and/or carboxyl functionalized organics is introduced. Pyrolysis of these nanocomposites gives anode materials with improved discharge capacity (750 mA h g(-1)) and cyclability. Abstract:Metal oxides have been considered as a promising anode material for lithium ion batteries (LIBs) due to their high theoretical capacities, low cost, natural abundance and environmental friendliness. However, the severe volume expansion upon cycling and poor conductivity, limit their cycling stability and rate capability. To address this issue, Co3O4 and NiO nanoparticles encapsulated at the endpoints of nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (NCNTs) hybrids are designed and prepared by a metal catalyzed graphitization-nitridization driven tip-growth process and the subsequent oxidation in air, using (carbon nitride) C3N4 as a new solid-state carbon and nitrogen source. When evaluate as an anode material for LIBs, the representative Co3O4@NCNT hybrid exhibits a high capacity of 1002 mA h g−1 at 100 mA g−1, excellent rate capability of 673 mA h g−1 at 5.0 A g−1 and remarkably cycling stability of 837 mA h g−1 after 800 cycles at 1 A g−1, which are much superior to those of Co3O4/CB control sample. The outstanding electrochemical performances of MxOy@NCNT are benefited from its unique nanoarchitecture, which offers porous conductive matrix for effective electron-ion transport and forms carbon nanocaps confined MxOy nanoparticles as well as stress buffer nanocavities for robust structural stability during lithiation/delithiation processes. The result may pave a way for the rational structural design of high-performance metal oxide-based anode material for next-generation LIBs.
