Abstract:We study the existence of symplectic and conformal symplectic (codimension-1) foliations on closed manifolds of dimension . Our main theorem, based on a recent result by Bertelson–Meigniez, states that in dimension at least 7 any almost contact structure is homotopic to a conformal symplectic foliation. In dimension 5 we construct explicit conformal symplectic foliations on every closed, simply-connected, almost contact manifold, as well as honest symplectic foliations on a large subset of them. Lastly, via round-connected sums, we obtain, on closed manifolds, examples of conformal symplectic foliations which admit a linear deformation to contact structures.

Abstract:We use adiabatic limits to study foliated manifolds. The Bott connection naturally shows up as the adiabatic limit of Levi-Civita connections. As an application, we then construct certain natural elliptic operators associated to the foliation and present a direct geometric proof of a vanshing theorem of Connes[Co], which extends the Lichnerowicz vanishing theorem [L] to foliated manifolds with spin leaves, for what we call almost Riemannian foliations. Several new vanishing theorems are also proved by using our method.

Abstract:For any closed oriented surface Σg of genus g⩾3, we prove the existence of foliated Σg-bundles over surfaces such that the signatures of the total spaces are non-zero. We can arrange that the total holonomy of the horizontal foliations preserve a prescribed symplectic form ω on the fiber. We relate the cohomology class represented by the transverse symplectic form to a crossed homomorphism Flux:SympΣg→H1(Σg;R) which is an extension of the flux homomorphism Flux:Symp0Σg→H1(Σg;R) from the identity component Symp0Σg to the whole group SympΣg of symplectomorphisms of Σg with respect to the symplectic form ω.

Vanishing cycles of symplectic foliations

Abstract:Recent years have shown that the usual generalizations of taut foliations to higher dimensions, based only on topological concepts, do not yield a theory comparable in richness to the $3$-dimensional one. The aim of this article is to prove that strong symplectic foliations are, however, a natural candidate for such a generalization that does lead to some interesting rigidity results, such as potentially topological obstructions on the underlying ambient manifold. We introduce a high-dimensional generalization of $3$-dimensional vanishing cycles for symplectic foliations, which we call Lagrangian vanishing cycles, and prove that they prevent a symplectic foliation from being strong, just as vanishing cycles prevent tautness in dimension $3$ due to a classical result by Novikov from 1964. We then describe, in every codimension, examples of symplectically foliated manifolds which admit Lagrangian vanishing cycles, but for which more classical arguments do not obstruct the foliation from being strong. In codimension $1$, this is achieved by a rather explicit modification of the symplectic foliation, which allows us to open up closed leaves having non-trivial holonomy on both sides, and is thus of independent interest. Since there is no comprehensive source on holomorphic curves with boundary in symplectic foliations, we also give a detailed introduction to much of the analytic theory, hoping that it might serve as a reference for future work in this direction.

Abstract:We prove that the Newton polygons of Frobenius on the crystalline cohomology of proper smooth varieties satisfy a symmetry that results, in the case of projective smooth varieties, from Poincaré duality and the hard Lefschetz theorem. As a corollary, we deduce that the Betti numbers in odd degrees of any proper smooth variety over a field are even (a consequence of Hodge symmetry in characteristic zero), answering an old question of Serre. Then we give a generalization and a refinement for arbitrary varieties over finite fields, in response to later questions of Serre and of Katz.

Abstract:In this paper, we first give a new simple proof to the elimination theorem of definite fold by homotopy for generic smooth maps of manifolds of dimension strictly greater than $2$ into the $2$--sphere or into the real projective plane. Our new proof has the advantage that it is not only constructive, but is also algorithmic: the procedures enable us to construct various explicit examples. We also study simple stable maps of $3$--manifolds into the $2$--sphere without definite fold. Furthermore, we prove the non-existence of singular Legendre fibrations on $3$--manifolds, answering negatively to a question posed in our previous paper.

The Family Seiberg-Witten Invariant and Nonsymplectic Loops of Diffeomorphisms

Abstract:By extending a result of Kronheimer-Mrowka to the family setting, we prove a gluing formula for the family Seiberg-Witten invariant. This formula allows one to compute the invariant for a smooth family of 4-manifolds by cutting it open along a product family of 3-manifolds and studying the induced maps on monopole Floer (co)homology. When the cutting 3-manifold is an L-space, this formula implies a relation between the family Seiberg-Witten invariant, the Seiberg-Witten invariant of the fiber and the index of the family Dirac operator. We use this relation to calculate the Seiberg-Witten invariant of families of 4-manifolds that arise when resolving an ADE singularity using a hyperkähler family of complex structures near the singularity. Several applications are obtained. First, we establish a large family of simply-connected 4-manifolds M (e.g. all elliptic surfaces) such that π_1(Diff(M)) has a ℤ^∞-summand . For such M, the product S^2× M smoothly fibers over S^2 with fiber M in infinitely many distinct ways. Second, we show that on any closed symplectic 4-manifold that contains a smoothly embedded sphere of self-intersection -1 or -2, there is a loop of diffeomorphisms that is not homotopic to a loop of symplectormorphisms. This generalizes a previous result by Smirnov and confirms a conjecture by McDuff in dimension 4. It also provides many new examples of 4-manifolds whose space of symplectic forms has a nontrivial fundamental group or first homology group.
Classification of the invariants of foliations by curves of low degree on the three-dimensional projective space

Abstract:We study foliations by curves on the three-dimensional projective space with no isolated singularities, which is equivalent to assuming that the conormal sheaf is locally free. We provide a classification of the topological and algebraic invariants of the conormal sheaves and singular schemes for such foliations by curves, up to degree 3. In particular, we prove that foliations by curves of degree 1 or 2 are contained in a pencil of planes or are Legendrian, and are given by the complete intersection of two codimension one distributions. Furthermore, we prove that the conormal sheaf of a foliation by curves of degree 3 with reduced singular scheme either splits as a sum of line bundles or is an instanton bundle. For degree larger than 3, we focus on two classes of foliations by curves, namely Legendrian foliations and those whose conormal sheaf is a twisted null-correlation bundle. We give characterizations of such foliations, describe their singular schemes and their moduli spaces.

Abstract:This work is a sequel to our previous monograph <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2010.15789" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2010.15789">arXiv:2010.15789</a> (to appear in AMS Memoirs), where we initiated our program to prove that the Bogomolov-Miyaoka-Yau inequality holds for closed, symplectic four-manifolds and, more generally, for closed, smooth four-manifolds with a Seiberg-Witten basic class. This inequality was first proved for compact, complex surfaces of general type by Miyaoka (1977) and Yau (1978). Our approach uses a version of Morse theory for a natural Hamiltonian, the square of the $L^2$ norm of the coupled spinors, for the circle action on the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles over a closed four-manifold. It has the aim of proving the existence of a projectively anti-self-dual connection on a rank-two Hermitian vector bundle over a blow-up of the four-manifold, where the first Pontrjagin number of the vector bundle is negative and greater than or equal to minus the Euler characteristic of the blown-up four-manifold. Our Morse theory argument relies on positivity of virtual Morse-Bott indices for critical points of Hamiltonians for circle actions on complex analytic spaces (or real analytic spaces that, locally, are sufficiently well-approximated by complex analytic model spaces), as developed by the first author in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.14710" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.14710">arXiv:2206.14710</a>. In our application to the moduli space of non-Abelian monopoles, the critical points are fixed points of the circle action and thus represented by Seiberg-Witten monopoles.

A remark on a theorem of Narasimhan and Ramanan

Abstract:In this short note, we provide an alternative proof of a notable theorem by Narasimhan and Ramanan. The theorem states that the moduli space of $S$-equivalence classes of semistable rank $2$ vector bundles over a curve $X$ of genus $2$ with trivial determinant is isomorphic to $\mathbb{P}^3$. Our proof relies on a criterion by Bauer and Szemberg, which characterizes projective spaces among smooth Fano varieties using Seshadri constants.

Perverse sheaves on varieties with large fundamental groups

Abstract:We conjecture that any perverse sheaf on a compact aspherical Kähler manifold has non-negative Euler characteristic. This extends the Singer-Hopf conjecture in the Kähler setting. We verify the stronger conjecture when the manifold X has non-positive holomorphic bisectional curvature. We also show that the conjecture holds when X is projective and in possession of a faithful semi-simple rigid local system. The first result is proved by expressing the Euler characteristic as an intersection number involving the characteristic cycle, and then using the curvature conditions to deduce non-negativity. For the second result, we have that the local system underlies a complex variation of Hodge structure. We then deduce the desired inequality from the curvature properties of the image of the period map.

The complete classification of isotopy classes of degree three symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ via a novel algebraic theory of braid monodromy

Abstract:We develop a new algebraic theory of positive braids and conjugacy classes in the braid group $B_3$. We use our theory to establish a complete classification of isotopy classes of degree three symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with only $A_n$-singularities for $n\geq 1$ (an $A_n$-singularity is locally modelled by the equation $z^2 = w^n$) independent of Gromov's theory of pseudoholomorphic curves. We show that if $C$ and $C'$ are degree three symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ with the same numbers of $A_n$-singularities for each $n\geq 1$, then $C$ is isotopic to $C'$. Furthermore, our theory furnishes a single method of proof that independently establishes and unifies several fundamental classification results on degree three symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$. In particular, we prove using our theory: (1) there is a unique isotopy class of degree three smooth symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ (a result due to Sikorav), (2) the number of nodes is a complete invariant of the isotopy class of a degree three nodal symplectic curve in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ (the case of irreducible nodal curves is due to Shevchishin and the case of reducible nodal curves is due to Golla-Starkston), and (3) there is a unique isotopy class of degree three cuspidal symplectic curves in $\mathbb{CP}^2$ (a generalization of a result due to Ohta-Ono). The present work represents the first step toward resolving the symplectic isotopy conjecture using purely algebraic techniques in the theory of braid groups. Finally, we independently establish a complete classification of genus one Lefschetz fibrations over $\mathbb{S}^2$ (a result due to Moishezon-Livne).

Abstract:We prove that the monodromy diffeomorphism of a complex 2-dimensional isolated hypersurface singularity of weighted-homogeneous type has infinite order in the smooth mapping class group of the Milnor fiber, provided the singularity is not a rational double point. This is a consequence of our main result: the boundary Dehn twist diffeomorphism of an indefinite symplectic filling of the canonical contact structure on a negatively-oriented Seifert-fibered rational homology 3-sphere has infinite order in the smooth mapping class group. Our techniques make essential use of analogues of the contact invariant in the setting of $\mathbb{Z}/p$-equivariant Seiberg--Witten--Floer homology of 3-manifolds.

On the moduli space of simple sheaves on singular K3 surfaces

Abstract:Mukai proved that the moduli space of simple sheaves on a smooth projective K3 surface is symplectic, and in \cite{FM2} we gave two constructions allowing one to construct new locally closed Lagrangian/isotropic subspaces of the moduli from old ones. In this paper, we extend both Mukai's result and our construction to reduced projective K3 surfaces; for the former we need to restrict our attention to perfect sheaves. There are two key points where we cannot get a straightforward generalization. In each, we need to prove that a certain differential form on the moduli space of simple, perfect sheaves vanishes, and we introduce a smoothability condition to complete the proof.

Abstract:The classical Sarkisov Program aims to decompose the induced birational map between any two Mori fiber spaces obtained as end results of different minimal model program ( starting from same projective variety ), in terms of finitely many Sarkisov links. In this article we prove the Sarkisov Program for co-rank one foliation with suitable singularities on normal projective threefolds. We also relate two foliated Mori fiber spaces with rank one foliations on normal projective threeefolds in the spirit of Sarkisov Program.

The Geometry of Three-Forms on Symplectic Six-Manifolds

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the geometries associated with 3-forms of various orbital types on a symplectic 6-manifold. We show that there are extremely rich geometric structures attached to certain unstable 3-forms arising naturally from degeneration of Calabi-Yau structures, which in turn provides us a new perspective towards the SYZ conjecture. We give concrete examples and demonstrate that the limiting behavior of the Type IIA flow can be used to detect canonical geometric structures on symplectic manifolds.

Abstract:We apply Zhang's almost Kähler Nakai-Moishezon theorem and Li-Zhang's comparison of $J$-symplectic cones to establish a stability result for the symplectomorphism group of a rational $4$-manifold $M$ with Euler number up to $12$. As a corollary, we also derive a stability result for the space of embedded symplectic balls in $M$. A noteworthy feature of our approach is that we systematically explore various spaces and groups associated to a symplectic cohomology class $u$ rather than with a single symplectic form $\omega$. To this end, we prove a weaker version of the tamed $J$-inflation procedures of D. McDuff and O. Buse that fixes a gap in their original formulations.

Abstract:We describe the local and Steenbrink vanishing problems for singular symplectic varieties with isolated singularities. We do this by constructing a morphism $$\mathbb D_X(\underline \Omega_X^{n+p}) \to \underline \Omega_X^{n+p}$$ for a symplectic variety $X$ of dimension $2n$ for $\frac{1}{2}\mathrm{codim}_X(X_{\mathrm{sing}}) < p$, where $\underline \Omega_X^k$ is the $k^{th}$-graded piece of the Du Bois complex and $\mathbb D_X$ is the Grothendieck duality functor. We show this morphism is a quasi-isomorphism when $p = n-1$ and that this symmetry descends to the Hodge filtration on the intersection Hodge module. As applications, we describe the higher Du Bois and higher rational properties for symplectic germs and the cohomology of primitive symplectic 4-folds.

Moduli spaces of sheaves on Fano threefolds and K3 surfaces of genus 9

Abstract:A complex smooth prime Fano threefold $X$ of genus $9$ is related via projective duality to a quartic plane curve $\Gamma$. We use this setup to study the restriction of rank $2$ stable sheaves with prescribed Chern classes on $X$ to an anticanonical $K3$ surface $S\subset X$. Varying the threefold $X$ containing $S$ gives a rational Lagrangian fibration $$\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7) \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}^3$$ with generic fibre birational to the moduli space $\mathcal{M}_X(2,1,7)$ of sheaves on $X$. Moreover, we prove that this rational fibration extends to an actual fibration on a birational model $\mathcal{M}$ of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$. In a last part, we use Bridgeland stability conditions to exhibit all $K$-trivial smooth birational models of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$, which consist in itself and $\mathcal{M}$. We prove that these models are related by a flop, and we describe the positive, movable and nef cones of $\mathcal{M}_S(2,1,7)$.
