Abstract:The shuttle effect and excessive volume change of the sulfur cathode severely impede the industrial implementation of Li-S batteries.It is still highly challenging to find an efficient way to suppress the shuttle effect and volume expansion.Here,we report,for the first time,an innovative atomic orbital hybridization concept to construct the hierarchical hollow sandwiched sulfur nanospheres with double-polyaniline layers as the cathode material for large-scale high-performance Li-S batteries.This hierarchically 3D,cross-linked and stable sulfur-polyaniline backbone with interconnected disulfide bonds provides a new type and strong intrinsic chemical confinement of sulfur owing to the atomic orbital hybridization of Li 2s,S 3p,C 2p and N 2p.Crucially,such atomic orbital hybridization of sulfur sandwiched in the double sulfur-polyaniline network is highly reversible during the discharge/charge process and can very efficiently suppress the shuttle effect and volume expansion,contributing to a very high capacity of 1142 mAh g-1 and an excellent stabilized capacity of 886 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C after 500 cycles with a suppressed volume expansion and an unprecedented electrode integrity.This innovative atomic orbital hybridization concept can be extended to the preparation of other electrode materials to eliminate the shuttle effect and volume expansion in battery technologies.The present work also provides a commercially viable and up-scalable cathode material based on this strong and highly reversible atomic orbital hybridation for large-scale high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:A novel high-rate dischargeable semi-solid Li-S battery without free liquid electrolyte is assembled using a multi-functional separator with a polysulfide shield. The polysulfide shield is composed of Li+-Nafion, polyethylene oxide, and super P carbon. Hierarchical porous carbon is used as a sulfur holder to anchor polysulfide and improve cathode conductivity. Unlike all-solid Li-S batteries, the resultant Li-S battery shows excellent performance in both rate capacity and cycleability. The sulfur lithiation capacity reaches 1330 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 C (0.335 A g(-1) of S) and 690 mAh g(-1) (338 mAh g(-1) of electrode materials) at 10 C (16.75 A g(-1) of S). The cell with the fabricated separator (SNP/Celgard) showed very low capacity degradation rate of less than 0.1% per cycle at 1 C (a discharge current density of 1.675 A g(-1)). Abstract:Lithium−sulfur (Li−S) battery is promising next generation rechargeable battery due to its potential high energy density. However, it suffers from major problems including poor cycle performance and low efficiency, mainly due to the high solubility of intermediate poly-sulfides and their side-reactions with the Li-anode. Recently, we have developed various open-structure functional gradient C-S composite cathodes with very high S-loadings that can utilize the high energy density of S-cathode while minimize the migration of poly-sulfide to anode side. We employed scalable and industrial viable method such as layer-by-layer nano-assembly technique that leads to a binder-free, three-dimensional porous cathode via electrostatic attraction and enables the fabrication of Li−S cells with remarkably improved performance including a long cycle life exceeding 600 cycles and a high Coulombic efficiency of 97.5% at the 1 C rate. Moreover, our Li−S cells have presented a high rate response up to 2.5 C with high sulfur utilization (a reversible capacity of 1100 mAhg−1, 900 mAhg−1, 700 mAhg−1, and 450 mAhg−1 of sulfur at 0.3, 0.6, 1, and 2.5 C rates, respectively). The results provide important progress toward the understanding of the role of multilayered cathodes and the realization of high-efficiency and long-term service life for Li−S batteries.

Air-Stable Li2S Cathodes Enabled by an In Situ-Formed Li+ Conductor for Graphite-Li2S Pouch Cells

Abstract:Using Li2S cathodes instead of S cathodes presents an opportunity to pair them with Li-free anodes (e.g., graphite), thereby circumventing anode-related issues, such as poor reversibility and safety, encountered in Li-S batteries. However, the moisture-sensitive nature of Li2S causes the release of hazardous H2S and the formation of insulative by-products, increasing the manufacturing difficulty and adversely affecting cathode performance. Here, Li4SnS4, a Li+ conductor that is air-stable according to the hard-soft acid-base principle, is formed in situ and uniformly on Li2S particles because Li2S itself participates in Li4SnS4 formation. When exposed to air (20% relative humidity), the protective Li4SnS4 layer maintains its components and structure, thus contributing to the enhanced stability of the Li2S@Li4SnS4 composite. In addition, the Li4SnS4 layer can accelerate the sluggish conversion of Li2S because of its favorable interfacial charge transfer, and continuously confine lithium polysulfides owing to its integrity during electrochemical processes. A graphite-Li2S pouch cell containing a Li2S@Li4SnS4 cathode is constructed, which shows stable cyclability with 97% capacity retention after 100 cycles. Hence, combining a desirable air-stable Li2S cathode and a highly reversible Li-free configuration offers potential practical applications of graphite-Li2S full cells.

Abstract:Mg metal is a promising anode material for next generation rechargeable battery due to its dendrite-free deposition and high capacity. However, the best cathode for rechargeable Mg battery was based on high molecular weight MgxMo3S4, thus rendering full cell energetically uncompetitive. To increase energy density, high capacity cathode material like sulfur is proposed. However, to date, only limited work has been reported on Mg/S system, all plagued by poor reversibility attributed to the formation of electrochemically inactive MgSx species. Here, we report a new strategy, based on the effect of Li(+) in activating MgSx species, to conjugate a dendrite-free Mg anode with a reversible polysulfide cathode and present a truly reversible Mg/S battery with capacity up to 1000 mAh/gs for more than 30 cycles. Mechanistic insights supported by spectroscopic and microscopic characterization strongly suggest that the reversibility arises from chemical reactivation of MgSx by Li(+).
An Efficient Li 2 S-based Lithium-ion Sulfur Battery Realized by a Bifunctional Electrolyte Additive

Abstract:Previous investigations have shown that high-energy lithium-ion sulfur batteries could be directly assembled with lithium sulfide (Li2S) cathode and a non-lithium anode. However, the existing lithium-ion sulfur battery suffers from the multistep sophisticated preparation process, high activation potential and also polysulfides corrosion to the anode. In this work, we propose and prepare a facile and feasible Li2S-based lithium-ion sulfur battery system, which is enabled by a bifunctional electrolyte additive. At first, Li2S particles were loaded on the low-cost carbonized commercial wipes by a solution-based infiltration method. Interestingly, for the first time, it is found that the well-designed indium triiodide (InI3) electrolyte additive not only performed as a cathodic redox mediator, reducing the activation potential of Li2S cathode, but also resulted in a passivation layer, preventing the anode from corrosion due to the shuttle effect. The obtained SnO2/Li2S full cell exhibits a stable electrochemical performance (983, 878, 746 and 675 mA h/g at 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.5 C, 647 mA h/g after 200 cycles at 0.5 C). Moreover, the manageable amount of lithium ions and the voltage cooperation between the cathode and anode in the full cell rendered the battery with a strong recovery ability against the abusive conditions test, such as over-charge, over-discharge and short-circuit, showing a great potential for practical use.

Abstract:Practical applications of Li-S batteries require not only high specific capacities and long cycle lifetimes but also high rate performance. We report a rationally designed Li-S cathode, which consists of a freestanding composite thin film assembled from S nanoparticles, reduced graphene oxide (rGO), and a multifunctional additive poly(anthraquinonyl sulfide) (PAQS). The S nanoparticles provide a high initial specific capacity, and the layered and porous rGO structure provides electron and ion transport paths and restricts polysulfide shuttling. PAQS is not only a highly efficient sulfide trapping agent but also an excellent Li(+) conductor, which benefits the battery reaction kinetics at a high rate. The resulting cathode exhibits an initial specific capacity of 1255 mAh g(-1) with a decay rate as low as 0.046% per cycles over 1200 cycles. Importantly, it displays a reversible capacity of 615 mAh g(-1) when discharged at a high rate of 8 C (13.744 A g(-1)).

Abstract:Recognized as the most attractive and promising anode, Li metal has been pursued for its high specific capacity and lowest standard potential. However, the hazardous Li dendrite growth is one of the most challenging issues for LMB, which brings about fragile SEI formation, low CE, large volume change and even safety issues. To tackle these problems, we design a 3D flexible MXene based lithium metal anode to accommodate the volume changes, accelerate the charge transport and lower the specific current density. Moreover, nonflammable ternary all-fluorinated carbonate electrolyte system is proposed to construct stable interface by introducing LiF-rich SEI and address the safety concerns. With these synergetic effects, 3D Li-MXene anode in ternary all-fluorinated electrolyte shows significantly improved reversibility with high average CE at 94.5 % after 200 cycles. Full Li metal cell with LFP cathode, composited 3D anode and nonflammable electrolyte delivers high-capacity retention of 95.7 % at 300 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles and excellent rate ability. These results pave a new direction for developing high safety and high-performance Li metal batteries and can also be extended to other rechargeable metal-anode-based batteries such as Na/K/Mg/Ca et al.

Abstract:Despite being extensively explored as cathodes in batteries, sulfur (S) can function as a low‐potential anode by changing charge carriers in electrolytes. Here, we report a highly reversible S anode that fully converts from S80 to S2– in static aqueous S–I2 batteries by using Na+ as the charge carrier. This S anode exhibits a low potential of –0.5 V (versus standard hydrogen electrode) and a near‐to‐theoretical capacity of 1404 mA h g–1. Importantly, it shows significant advantages over the widely‐used Zn anode in aqueous media by obviating dendrite formation and H2 evolution. To suppress "shuttle effects" faced by both S and I2 electrodes, a scalable sulfonated polysulfone (SPSF) membrane is proposed, which is superior to commercial Nafion in cost (US 3500 m–2) and environmental benignity. Because of its ultra‐high selectivity in blocking poly–sulfides/iodides, the battery with SPSF displays excellent cycling stability. Even under 100% depth of discharge (DoD), the battery demonstrates high capacity retention of 87.6% over 500 cycles, outperforming Zn–I2 batteries with 3.1% capacity under the same conditions. Abstract:Lithium metal is a promising anode for high‐energy‐density lithium batteries, but its practical application is still hindered by intrinsic defects such as infinite volume expansion and uncontrollable dendrites growth. Herein, a dendrite‐free 3D composite Li anode (Li‐B@SSM) is prepared by mechanically rolling of lithiophilic LiB nanofibers supported Li‐B composite and lithiophobic stainless‐steel mesh (SSM). Featuring hierarchical lithiophilic‐lithiophobic dual‐skeletons, the Li‐B@SSM anode shows an ultra‐high Coulombic efficiency of 99.95% and a long lifespan of 900 h under 2 mA cm−2/1 mAh cm−2. It is demonstrated that the abnormally reversible Li stripping/plating processes should be closely related to the site‐selective plating behavior and spatial confinement effect induced by the robust lithiophilic‐lithiophobic dual‐skeletons, which alleviates the volume changes, suppresses the growth of Li dendrites, and reduces the accumulation of "dead" Li. More importantly, the application feasibility of the Li‐B@SSM anode is also confirmed in full batteries, of which the Li‐B@SSM|LiFePO4 full cell shows a high capacity retention of 97.5% after 400 cycles while the Li‐B@SSM|S pouch battery exhibits good cycle stability even under practically harsh conditions. Abstract:The sluggish conversion reaction of sulfur and poor interfacial contact restrict electrochemical performance and practical application of all-solid-state Li–S batteries. Herein, we present a rational design of cell structure with a cathode-supported-electrolyte configuration to attain high-performance all-solid-state Li–S batteries. A mechanically robust sulfur cathode was constructed, and a slurry-based polymer electrolyte layer was subsequently cast on the cathode to form an intimate interfacial contact. The resulting battery shows a high specific capacity and good cycle performance. Abstract:Although the reversible and inexpensive energy storage characteristics of the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery have made it a promising candidate for electrical energy storage, the dendrite growth (anode) and shuttle effect (cathode) hinder its practical application. Here, it is shown that new electrolytes for Li-S batteries promote the simultaneous formation of bilateral solid electrolyte interfaces on the sulfur-host cathode and lithium anode, thus effectively suppressing the shuttle effect and dendrite growth. These high-capacity Li-S batteries with new electrolytes exhibit a long-term cycling stability, ultrafast-charge/slow-discharge rates, super-low self-discharge performance, and a capacity retention of 94.9% even after a 130 d long storage. Importantly, the long cycle stability of these industrial grade high-capacity Li-S pouch cells with new electrolytes will provide the basis for creating robust energy dense Li-S batteries with an extensive life cycle.

Abstract:The reversible lithium (Li) plating/stripping is essentially required for building practical high-energy-density batteries based on Li metal chemistry, which unfortunately remains a severe challenge yet. In this contribution, we demonstrate that through the rational regulation of strong Li+−anion coordination structures in a highly compatible low-polarity solvent, 2-methyl tetrahydrofuran (MeTHF), the Li plating/stripping assisted by a nucleation modulation procedure delivers a remarkably high average Coulombic efficiency (CE) under rather demanding conditions (99.7% and 99.5% under 1.0 mA cm−2, 3.0 mAh cm−2 and 3.0 mA cm−2, 3.0 mAh cm−2, respectively). The exceedingly reversible cycling obtained herein is fundamentally correlated with the flattened Li deposition and minimized SEI generation/reconstruction in the customized condition, which notably restrains the growth rates of both dead Li0 (0.0120 mAh/cycle) and SEI-Li+ (0.0191 mAh/cycle) during consecutive cycles. Benefiting from the efficient Li plating/stripping manner, the assembled anode-free Cu|LiFePO4 (2.7 mAh cm−2) coin and pouch cells exhibit impressive capacity retention of 43.8% and 41.6% after 150 cycles, respectively, albeit no optimization on the test conditions. This work provides guidelines into the targeted interfacial design of high-efficiency working Li anode, aiming to pave the way for the practical deployment of high-energy-density Li metal batteries.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Fluorinated carbon (CFx) cathodes possess the highest theoretical energy density among lithium primary batteries. However, achieving reversibility in CFx remains a significant challenge. This work employs a high-voltage sulfolane electrolyte and achieves a highly reversible CFx cathodes in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) via fine modification of the C-F bond character. The improved reversibility of CFx originates from the semi-ionic CFx phase, with a superior bond length and weaker bond energy than a covalent bond. This characteristic significantly mitigates the challenges encountered during the charging process. We screen and identify the fluorinated graphene CF1.12 as a suitable cathode, providing an appropriate fluorine content and sufficient semi-ionic C-F bonds for rechargeable LIBs. This fluorinated graphene CF1.12 exhibits an initial discharge specific capacity of 814 mAh g-1 and a reversible discharge specific capacity of 350 mAh g-1. This work provides a new clue for chemical bond regulation studies and provides insights into stimulating reversibility of primary-cell cathodes.

Abstract:Abstract The shuttle effect and excessive volume change of the sulfur cathode severely impede the industrial implementation of Li-S batteries. It is still highly challenging to find an efficient way to suppress the shuttle effect and volume expansion. Here, we report, for the first time, an innovative atomic orbital hybridization concept to construct the hierarchical hollow sandwiched sulfur nanospheres with double-polyaniline layers as cathode material for large-scale high-performance Li-S batteries. This hierarchically three-dimensional, cross-linked and stable sulfur-polyaniline backbone with interconnected disulfide bonds provides a new type and strong intrinsic chemical confinement of sulfur owing to the atomic orbital hybridization of Li 1s, S 2p, C 2p, and N 2p. Crucially, such atomic orbital hybridization of sulfur sandwiched in the double sulfur-polyaniline network is highly reversible during the discharge/charge process and can very efficiently suppress the shuttle effect and volume expansion, contributing to a very high capacity of 1142 mAh g–1 and an excellent stabilized capacity of 886 mAh g–1 at 0.2 C after 500 cycles with a suppressed volume expansion and an unprecedented electrode integrity. This innovative atomic orbital hybridization concept can be extended to the prepration of other electrod materials to eliminate the shuttle effect and volume expansion in bettery technoligies. The present work also provides a commercially viable and up-scalable cathode material based on this strong and highly reversible atomic orbital hybridation for large-scale high-performance Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium sulfide (Li2S), which has a high theoretical specific capacity of 1166 mA h g−1, has potential application in cathode materials because of its high safety and compatibility with lithium-free anodes for Li–S batteries. However, its low electron conductivity and lithium transfer cause significant polarization in Li2S electrodes. Here, we demonstrate the use of ultrasmall Li2S nanocrystals encapsulated in N-rich carbon (NRC) as a cathode material for Li–S batteries. By evaporating a mixture of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and Li2S in dimethylformamide (DMF) solution and then subjecting the mixture to carbonization, a nano-Li2S@NRC composite with ultrasmall Li2S well dispersed in its carbon matrix was successfully synthesized. The obviously lower potential barriers and excellent cycling performance of nano-Li2S@NRC electrodes confirm their improved polarization because of the size effect of Li2S nanocrystals and the good electron transfer between Li2S and N-doped carbon. The nano-Li2S@NRC cathode delivers a high initial specific capacity of 1046 mA h g−1 of Li2S (∼1503 mA h g−1 of S) at 0.25C and 958 mA h g−1 of Li2S (∼1376 mA h g−1 of S) at 0.5C with a favorable cycling performance with an ∼0.041% decay rate per cycle over 1000 cycles.
