Abstract:To improve the energy utilization efficiency of H2S decomposition by dielectric barrier discharge (DBD),a series of experiments are performed.Taking coaxial DBD reactive system as object,the influences of DBD's electrical parameters and reactor geometrical parameters on the energy input and H2S removal efficiency are studied from aspects of resonance characteristics and power characteristics.The experimental results show that the resonance behavior between discharge frequency and loading voltage affects direcdy the H2S removal efficiency.The removal efficiency reaches its maximum value at resonance frequency point.The reason that the loading voltage and reactor geometrical parameters have an effect on the size of resonance frequency can be attributed to the changes of dielectric equivalent capacitance.Moreover,the effective discharge power of DBD has quantitative rule with discharge frequency,loading voltage and reactor's geometrical parameters,i.e.P=A ·L·f· Vn.The energy input efficiency ηP is the largest at resonance frequency point when the loading voltage remains unchanged.If the other operating parameters remain unchanged,the longer the discharge area is,the higher the H2S removal efficiency is.The optimal discharge gap is 5 mm.

Abstract:The present study explores the chemical kinetics of plasma-assisted dry reforming of methane (340 K, 30 Torr) in a flow reactor activated by a nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). Experiments are conducted with the inlet CO2/CH4 mol ratios varying from 0.4 to 2.8 in CH4/CO2/Ar mixture. Synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectrometry (SVUV-PIMS) is employed for detailed species measurement of the ions, radicals, and molecules in this system. Eight ions are observed, including CH3+, O+, CH4+, Ar2+, CO+, C2H4+, Ar+, and CO2+. The identification of several intermediate species and products are achieved based on the photoionization efficiency (PIE) spectra, such as methyl radical (CH3), water (H2O), acetylene (C2H2), carbon monoxide (CO), ethylene (C2H4), formaldehyde (CH2O), methanol (CH3OH), ketene (CH2CO), and acetone (CH3COCH3). Species mole fraction profiles as a function of inlet CO2 concentrations are obtained. The present work provides a unique dataset and enriches our understanding of the kinetics of plasma-assisted dry reforming of methane. A kinetic mechanism incorporating plasma reactions and combustion reactions is developed for this system, and its prediction performance of the product selectivity is validated against the experimental data. The main reaction pathways for the consumption of CH4 and CO2 and the formation of products and intermediates are indicated based on the rate of production (ROP) analysis. The ionic reactions are predominant for CH4 consumption, leading to CH4+ and CH5+, while CH4 reactions with electrons and Ar* contribute to CH2 and CH3 formation. CO2 mainly reacts with electrons and Ar*, producing CO, and can also undergo reactions with CH4+ and CH5+, forming HCO2+. The principal formation pathways for H2, CO, CH2O, and CH3OH are discussed. A competition between the discharge pathways and oxygen-containing pathways in CH4/CO2/Ar plasma is proposed.

Abstract:The conventional ways of processing natural gas into more efficient and economical fuels usually have either low conversion rate or low energy efficiency. In this paper, a new approach of methane liquefaction is proposed. Instead of direct treatment of only natural gas, plasma-activated methane is reacting with liquid fuel. In this way, methane molecules are directly incorporated into liquid fuel to achieve liquefaction. Nanosecond-pulsed dielectric barrier discharge and atmospheric pressure glow discharge are used here to ensure no local heating in gas bubbles. Effects of both discharges on methane reaction with liquid fuel are investigated, and mass and chemical changes in liquid are observed. Preliminary results show fixation of methane in liquid fuel.

Abstract:Dry reforming of CH4 with CO2 to produce syngas was investigated in a plasma reactor without catalysts at atmospheric pressure. The reactants passed through the plasma zone and reacted in milliseconds with high conversions and selectivity due to the localized high temperature. The results showed that both conversions and selectivity were higher when using a DC arc discharge than using a pulsed DC arc. Increasing the input energy density promoted the conversions of reactants. At an input power of 204 W, the conversions of CO2 and CH4 reached 99.3 and 99.6%, respectively, and the selectivity to products was almost 100%, where the molar ratio of CO2/CH4 was 1 with the reactants flow rate of 100 ml/min. Very little coke was formed during the course of reaction. Key parameters such as the pulse frequency, the input power and the total feed flow rate were studied to find the optimum operating condition.

Abstract:Experiments were conducted on syngas preparation from dry reforming of methane by carbon dioxide with a DC arc plasma at atmospheric pressure. In all experiments, nitrogen gas was used as the working gas for thermal plasma to generate a high-temperature jet into a horizontal tube reactor. A mixture of methane and carbon dioxide was fed vertically into the jet. In order to obtain a higher conversion rate of methane and carbon dioxide, chemical energy efficiency and fuel production efficiency, parametric screening studies were conducted, in which the volume ratio of carbon dioxide to methane in fed gases and the total flux of fed gases were taken into account. Results showed that carbon dioxide reforming of methane to syngas by thermal plasma exhibited a larger processing capacity, higher conversion of methane and carbon dioxide and higher chemical energy efficiency and fuel production efficiency. In addition, thermodynamic simulation for the reforming process was conducted. Experimental data agreed well with the thermodynamic results, indicating that high thermal efficiency can be achieved with the thermal plasma reforming process.

Abstract:The synergetic effect of commercial catalyst Ni/Al2O3 with the low-temperature plasma created by a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) for the dry reforming of methane was investigated in a coaxial DBD reactor. Three different contact modes of prereduced catalyst with plasma were studied to determine the interaction of plasma and catalyst, especially their synergetic effect. When the catalyst was placed at the end of the discharge zone or absolutely separated with the discharge zone, there was no synergetic effect or much worse effect than only using plasma or only using catalyst. However, when the catalyst was fully filled in the annular discharge gap, the synergetic effect was achieved. In addition, with the increase of temperature, the synergetic effect appeared to be evident from 673 K. The experiments also demonstrated that the unreduced catalyst filled in the annular discharge gap can be in-situ reduced during the reaction at around 673 K by the assistance of the in-situ plasma. Abstract:Low temperature conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 was investigated in a coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactor at ambient pressure. Main parameters, including the input power, the residence time, the discharge gap, the molar ratio of the feed gases and the multi-stage ionization design were evaluated to understand the ways to improve the conversion of greenhouse gases and reduce the output of by-products. At certain input power, the conversion of CH 4 and CO 2 can reach 0.797 and 0.527, respectively, when the molar ratio of CH 4 /CO 2 is one. When this ratio was low to 1:5, the conversion of CH 4 was promoted to 0.843 and the selectivity to CO and H 2 was almost 100%. The multi-stage ionization favored the conversion of CO 2 , which would also be an efficient design to promote the selectivity to the main products such as CO and H 2 and suppress the selectivity to the by-products.

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma reforming of CH4 with CO2 into value-added fuels and chemicals is very promising but challenging due to the low energy efficiency of the reforming process. One of the most important factors influencing energy efficiency is plasma power supply, and nanosecond pulsed power sources are gaining increasing interest in enhancing the energy efficiency of plasma chemical processes. Here, we investigate plasma-assisted CH4 reforming with CO2 using a nanosecond pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. Both electrical characteristics and reaction performance were investigated under different operating parameters, including applied voltage, total flow rate, CH4/CO2 molar ratio, and discharge length. Increasing applied voltage (from 20 to 28 kV) and discharge length (from 6 to 14 cm) enhanced the total gas conversion by 53.2% and 41.2%, respectively, but decreased the energy efficiency by 30.6% and 14.3%, respectively. The highest energy efficiency (12.4%) was obtained at an applied voltage of 20 kV, a total flow rate of 50 ml/min, a CH4/CO2 molar ratio of 1:1 and a discharge length of 10 cm, while the highest total gas conversion of 30.3% was achieved at a higher applied voltage of 26 kV and a lower total flow rate of 25 ml/min. An artificial neural network (ANN) model was developed to predict the plasma reforming process, and to investigate the relative contributions of key operating parameters to the reaction performance of this process. The results of the ANN model indicate that the CH4/CO2 molar ratio and total flow rate affect the gas conversion most significantly, while the CH4/CO2 molar ratio plays a dominant role in determining the product selectivity and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Fugitive methane (CH4) from waste treatment facilities (landfill mining), power industries (oil and gas process plants) and coal mining etc. into atmosphere is an increasing environmental concern. In this study, CH4 conversion efficiency in double dielectric barrier discharge (DDBD) has been investigated at various operating parameters including input power, feed gas-mixture flow rate, CH4 initial concentrations, and discharge gap distance between two dielectrics. Increase in input power, decrease in the gas mixture flow rate and discharge gap distance; results in increases of CH4 conversion efficiency. In plasma alone, maximum CH4 conversion efficiency of 76% was obtained using 3 mm plasma discharge gap distance at flow rates of 2 L/min, input power of 65.8 W and is limited by experimental conditions. In addition, CH4 conversion efficiency in plasma alone and plasma-catalytic is compared by introducing various catalysts includes Pt Sn/Al2O3, BaTiO3 and HZSM-5 in single plasma discharge zone. Results revealed that plasma combined with Pt Sn/Al2O3 showed higher CH4 conversion efficiency (84.93%) as compare to plasma alone (56.42%) using 6 mm plasma discharge gap distance at flow rates of 2 L/min, input power of 65.8 W. Moreover, maximum energy efficiency of CH4 conversion (limited by experimental conditions) was 27.24 x 10(-12) mol/kJ at 32.6 W observed in plasma-catalyst. Analysis of the exhaust gas showed that DDBD is a promising alternative reactor not only to achieve high CH4 conversion efficiency, but also to overcome the drawbacks of formation of undesirable byproducts. Moreover, deposition of carbon residues on the surface of internal electrode is not observed, which is often occurred in single DBD reactors. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Plasma-based dry reforming in an atmospheric dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) reactor has been thoroughly studied by combination of experiments and detailed kinetics simulation. With the assistances of in-situ optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurements and reaction pathway analysis based on plasma kinetic simulation considering non-constant electric field and thermal effects, this study provided deep insights into the reaction mechanism of plasma-based dry reforming under varied feeding gas composition, gas residence time and operation temperature. A CH4 conversion as high as 44.76 % could be achieved without catalyst at 300 °C, with an SEI of 78 J/cm3 and feeding CH4 ratio of 50 %. Increase of feeding CH4 proportions were found to enhance the generation of C2 and C3 hydrocarbons. Consistently, the OES analysis showed that the relative intensities of spectra bands induced by deexcitation of CH, CO, and C2 also increased monotonically. With the same increment in SEI, increasing gas residence time led to larger promotions in CH4 and CO2 conversion, as being compared to increase of input power. The reason could be explained as that CH4 and CO2 molecules experienced more successive micro-discharges with a longer gas residence time, so more energy would be devoted into CH4/CO2 conversion, whereas more energy was dissipated into heat as rudely increased the discharge power due to the limit of reaction time. CO2 conversion continuously decreased with increasing gas temperature, owing to the recombination of CO and O enhanced at higher gas temperatures. Reaction pathway analysis showed that CH4 conversion was mainly induced by electronic dissociation and ionization at the discharge stage, while CO2 was mainly converted by recombination reaction CO2 + CH2 → CH2O + CO and also electron collision vibrational reaction e + CO2 → e + CO2(vn). The formation of C2 hydrocarbon products was supposed to follow the path of CH4 ↔ CH3/CH → C2H6 ↔ C2H5 ↔ C2H4 → C2H2.

Abstract:The plasma dry reforming reaction of methane with carbon dioxide is investigated in a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge, a type of plasma that offers one of the highest non-equilibrium and performance characteristics. The experiment's purpose was to examine the effect of varying the sequence of high-voltage pulses for the same plasma energy. We find that when successive pulses are closer than 500 $\rm \mu$s, a memory-dominated regime gradually develops, which influences subsequent breakdown events. As a result, both a higher reactant conversion and more efficient use of the energy injected into the discharge plasma are achieved.

Abstract:Liquid oxygen/methane engines have high ignition energy and long ignition delay time. To improve its ignition and combustion performance, this research proposes an online methane reforming technology using dielectric barrier discharge. The performance of methane reforming by single/double layer dielectric barrier discharge plasma with high-frequency AC and nanosecond pulse excitation was comprehensively evaluated and compared through experiments and simulation. To evaluate the feasibility of this technology, numerical simulations were introduced to investigate the potential improvement of reformed methane on rocket engine performance. The results show that compared to high-frequency AC excitation, nanosecond pulse excitation dissipates less discharge energy, resulting in a methane conversion rate of 4%, H 2 selectivity of 13%, and C 2 H 4 selectivity of 6% higher than high-frequency AC excitation. Increasing the excitation voltage and frequency could promote methane cracking from 1.9% to 8% while the energy conversion efficiency decreases from a maximum of 6%–3.8%, and the carbon balance index also decreases from a maximum of 99.7%–97.25%. Double layer dielectric barrier discharge is more uniform than single layer dielectric barrier discharge structure, which can reduce the accumulation of by-products and have higher selectivity for H 2 . The nanosecond pulse double layer dielectric barrier discharge plasma technology has ideal methane reforming performance and high energy efficiency, making it suitable for online methane reforming. In addition, methane reforming could improve rocket engine combustion performance by accelerating flame development and expanding the high-temperature area, leading to the engine specific impulse increasing by 3.9%.

Abstract:Dry methane reforming (DMR) via rotating gliding arc (RGA) discharge, co-driven by a magnetic field and tangential flow, was investigated in this study. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) was used to characterize the major active species (energetic electrons, radicals, ions, atoms and excited molecules) in the DMR chemical process. The influence of the operational conditions (applied voltage and CH4/CO2 ratio) on the basic spectroscopic parameters (electron excitation temperature, electron density and rotational temperature) was determined by spectroscopic methods. The rotational and electron excitation temperatures were approximately 1100–1200 K and 1.1–1.7 eV, respectively, indicating the non-thermal equilibrium characteristics of the RGA discharge. The electron density was approximately 5–20 × 1021 m−3 by fitting the line shape of Hα at 656 nm. The conversions of the reactants (CH4 and CO2) and the selectivities of the products (H2, CO and C2 hydrocarbon) were analyzed using a gas chromatograph (GC) under different energy inputs or feed gas proportions. The structure and morphology of carbon black produced during the chemical process was characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and Raman spectroscopy, indicating the properties of electrical conductivity and high absorption capacity that can be useful for potential application.
Optimization of Discharge Plasma Reactor for Dry Reforming of Methane using Response Surface Methodology

Abstract:This research provides a study of the dry reforming of methane (DRM), which converts two main greenhouses gases (CO2 and CH4) to synthesis gas (H2 and CO) by a Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) plasma reactor at atmospheric pressure. The Box-Behnken Design (BBD) method based on the Response Surface Methodology (RSM) was applied to determine the optimum experimental conditions on the plasma stability and the synthesis gas production. The synergistic effects of input power (P), CO2/CH4 ratio (R), and flow rate (FR) on the CO2, CH4 conversions, H2, CO yields, and the syngas ratio of H2 to CO were studied. With the desirability value of 0.97, the optimum values of 10.05 W (P), 1.03 (R), and 1.58 L.min−1 FR were identified with CO2 conversion of 48.56% and CH4 conversion of 86.67%; H2 and CO yields of 45.87% and 39.43% respectively; and syngas ratio of H2 to CO of 0.88. The study shows that both P and FR have a major significant effect on the reactant conversions and syngas ratio, followed by R. Meanwhile, the value of R has a significant impact on the H2, CO yields followed P and FR. In contrast, the synergistic effects between P-R, P-FR, and R-FR had a weak significant on the CO2 and CH4 conversions, H2 and CO yields, and H2 to CO ratio respectively. The quadratic term coefficients of P, R, and FR had a remarkable effect on all responses. Thus, the synergistic effect of the most important parameters improves the process efficiency. Abstract:Carbon dioxide and methane reforming using a unique DC arc plasma reactor without catalyst could achieve high conversions and selectivity in milliseconds.Very little coke was formed during the course of reaction.Influences of the total flow rate and molar ratio of CO2 to CH4 at an input power of 170 W were studied to find the optimum operating conditions.Increasing the input energy density promoted the conversions of reactants and reduced the formation of the by-products efficiently.The conversions of CO2 and CH4 reached 89.8% and 96.3%,respectively,and the selectivities to H2 and CO products were 99.6% and 99.3%,respectively,where the mole ratio of CO2 to CH4 was 1.Excessive CO2 could benefit the conversion of CH4 and result in the high selectivity to syngas.Specific energy requirement(SER)was used to express the energy utilization efficiency of the process,providing a practical guidance on optimization of reaction conditions to increase the energy efficiency.

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is a highly endothermic process, with its development hindered by the harsh thermocatalytic conditions required. We propose an innovative DRM approach utilizing a 16 W pulsed laser in combination with a cost-effective Mo2C catalyst, enabling DRM under milder conditions. The pulsed laser serves a dual function by inducing localized high temperatures and generating *CH plasma on the Mo2C surface. This activates CH4 and CO2, significantly accelerating the DRM reaction. Notably, the laser directly generates *CH plasma from CH4 through thermionic emission and cascade ionization, bypassing the traditional step-by-step dehydrogenation process and eliminating the rate-limiting step of methane cracking. This method maintains a carbon-oxygen balanced environment, thus preventing the deactivation of the Mo2C catalyst due to CO2 oxidation. The laser-catalytic DRM achieves high yields of H2 (14300.8 mmol h-1 g-1) and CO (14949.9 mmol h-1 g-1) with satisfactory energy efficiency (0.98 mmol kJ-1), providing a promising alternative for high-energy-consuming catalytic systems.

Abstract:CO2 reforming of CH4 to syngas (H2 and CO) has emerged as one of the attractive options for mitigating carbon emissions. Here, a water‐cooled dielectric barrier discharge plasma reactor has been constructed for CO2–CH4 reforming to produce syngas and value‐added chemicals. The effects of the main parameters (i.e., discharge power, CH4/CO2 molar ratio, and gas flow rate) on CO2–CH4 reforming were investigated. The highest conversion rate of CH4 and CO2 was found to be 40.57% and 27.15%, respectively, with CO and H2 selectivity of 56.07% and 43.71%, respectively. The total energy efficiency achieved was 0.28 mmol/kJ. C2H6 was found to be the main hydrocarbon product. Lastly, the mechanism of CO2–CH4 reforming was proposed in terms of the active species and products.

Abstract:In this study, the reforming of methane into hydrogen with oxygen and water vapor assisted by gliding arc discharge plasma was investigated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. The effects of excess air coefficient, gas flow rate and water vapor content were considered, and the by-products were also discussed. In the experiment, the selectivity of hydrogen can be achieved up to the maximum of 45.9% when excess air coefficient reaches about 0.8. The cost of producing hydrogen reaches the lowest point at 14L/min of gas flow rate. The injection of some water vapor could be better for the reforming reaction.
