Abstract:A series of Mg3Al1−xCexO composite oxide catalysts were prepared by co-precipitation for the transesterification of ethylene glycol to ethylene carbonate. The characterization results revealed that the addition of cerium changed the acid-base properties of the catalyst and that the strong basic sites on the catalyst surface played an important role in the reaction. The Mg3Al0.9Ce0.1O catalyst showed the highest catalytic activity (ethylene carbonate yield 98.1%). Compared with pure Mg-Al oxide, the appropriate addition of Ce was conducive to improving the surface basicity and adsorbed oxygen content of the catalyst. Additionally, the reaction process of the formation of ethylene glycol hydroxyl group with the alkoxy anion formed by the catalyst attacking the carbonyl carbon of nucleophilic dimethyl carbonate to form an adsorption intermediate (HEMC) on the catalyst surface for further intramolecular rearrangement to form ethylene carbonate was confirmed by operando infrared spectroscopy. The reaction kinetics shows that the reaction conforms to the second-order kinetic equation, and the activation energy is 53.71 kJ·mol−1. Catalytic stability in a fixed-bed reactor was studied. After a long cycle of use (150 h), the yield of ethylene carbonate was stabilized at about 89.0%.

Abstract:La‐doped Mg−Al composite oxides were prepared by co‐precipitation method. The introduction of La enhanced the interaction with MgO, which further increased the density and strength of the strong base sites of the catalysts and improved the lattice oxygen content of the catalysts. The material showed high catalytic performance for the synthesis of diethyl carbonate via transesterification of ethylene carbonate with ethanol. Series of La‐doped Mg−Al composite oxides were prepared by co‐precipitation method and used as catalysts for the synthesis of diethyl carbonate (DEC) via transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) with ethanol (EtOH). SEM, XRD, FT‐IR and XPS results confirmed that the introduction of La enhanced the interaction with MgO. The 8 mol % La‐doped Mg−Al composite oxide (calcined catalyst named HTC‐0.8 La) produced strong interactions and improved lattice oxygen content (27.84 %). Based on the N2 adsorption‐desorption and CO2‐TPD results, the HTC‐0.8 La catalysts possessed abundant multistage mesoporous structure, high strong base density and strength (0.941 mmol ⋅ g−1). Therefore, the HTC‐0.8La catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity with 58.5 % yield of DEC and 94.7 % selectivity to DEC (EC: EtOH molar ratio=1 : 6, reaction time=1.5 h, reaction temperature=150 °C and catalyst amount=3.2 wt %). Based on the correlation between catalytic activity and alkalinity, the yield of DEC was positively and linearly related to the strong alkali density of the catalyst. After five replicate experiments, the DEC yield after recovery and roasting reached 54.1 %, indicating that HTC‐0.8La is a renewable heterogeneous catalyst.

Abstract:A series of functionalized polymer ionic liquids (PILs) were synthesized and immobilized onto a 4 angstrom molecular sieve. The catalytic activity of the resulting heterogeneous catalyst toward the synthesis of ethylene carbonate (EC) via the cycloaddition reaction of ethylene oxide (EO) and CO2 was studied. The effects of the reaction conditions such as reaction temperature, pressure, time, and the amount of catalyst used, were systematically investigated. A high yield of EC and excellent selectivity could be obtained under optimized conditions. The catalyst is thermally stable and shows good reusability. Based on the experimental results, a plausible reaction mechanism has been proposed for the catalytic reaction.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous MgO catalysts with high surface area and adjustable alkalinity were prepared with a carbon deposit template in-situ generated via pyrolysis of organic compounds (OCs) in an inert atmosphere. The effects of the preparation parameters, such as calcination temperature, atmosphere, types and dosage of OCs, etc., on the physicochemical properties of synthesized MgO were investigated. The characterization results suggested that the base strength varied with preparation conditions due to the different microstructure caused by various parameters and the influence mechanism of microstructure on the base strength of synthesized MgO was speculated and discussed. A yield of ethyl methyl carbonate as high as 49.5% was achieved for the best sample synthesized in this work at 103 °C in only 20 min. High specific surface area (∼206 m 2 ·g −1 ), large pore volume (0.48 cm 3 · g −1 ) and suitable base strength enable the obtained MgO an eligible candidate for transesterification reaction. Additionally, the new strategy for controlling the base strength of as-prepared MgO also suggested good prospects in other practical applications.

Abstract:A series of KF/Mg‐Fe oxides were fabricated via the solid‐state reaction between KF and Mg‐Fe oxides. Especially, when 20 wt.% KF was supported on the Mg‐Fe bi‐metal oxides and calcined at 400‐600 °C, the solid material with more basic sites than the support itself was obtained. When applied as catalyst to dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis through transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol, this material can afforded up to 88% yield and 97% selectivity toward DMC in 2 h under reflux conditions with the molar ratio of methanol to ethylene carbonate set at 8. It is worth noting that the catalyst was easily separated and reused, retaining at least 89% catalytic activity during the first four recycles. Although an attenuated activity was still observed due to the inevitable filtration loss and dissolution, this solid base can still provide clues to the development recyclable catalyst in green synthesis of DMC.

Abstract:A basic ionic liquid, namely choline hydroxide, was prepared and supported on MgO to form Choline hydroxide/MgO material. The supported ionic liquid material was characterized by XRD, FT–IR and TG and used as a catalyst in one-pot synthesis of dimethyl carbonate from propylene oxide, methanol and carbon dioxide. A good catalytic performance was obtained with 98% conversion of epoxide and selectivity of above 90% to DMC + PC over the composite catalyst. However, the catalyst could be reused three times without a significant change in its catalytic activity.
Excess soluble alkalis to prepare highly efficient MgO with relative low surface oxygen content applied in DMC synthesis

Abstract:Abstract The activities of various MgO catalysts, which were prepared from different methods such as hydration synthesis, thermal decomposition, combustion, sol–gel and co-precipitation, were conducted in dimethyl carbonate (DMC) synthesis via transesterification of ethylene carbonate with methanol. MgO-P-Na 2 CO 3 -3.14 synthesized by the excess Na 2 CO 3 precipitation compared the best catalytic activity and stability, which could be reused for seven times without obvious deactivation. The DMC yield was as high as 69.97% at 68 °C. The transesterification reaction could be separated into two steps, and the samples obtained by NaOH precipitant exhibited better ring-opening capability, while the catalysts acquired by Na 2 CO 3 precipitant displayed superior transesterification ability. The structure-performance relationship was evaluated by multiple characterization methods. The results indicated that the as-synthesized catalyst derived from dried precursors with more crystalline magnesium carbonate was favorable for the promotion of DMC yield, and MgO-P-Na 2 CO 3 -3.14 with more Mg-O pairs, which were the active center for the transesterification of 2-hydroxyethyl methyl carbonate (HEMC) intermediate with methanol, resulted in more moderately basic sites left that was in accordance with the DMC yield variation. MgO-P-Na 2 CO 3 -3.14 with greater BET surface area and mesopore volume, relative low surface oxygen content and larger moderately basic sites amount compared the excellent activity in DMC synthesis.

Abstract:ZnFe2O4 was prepared for diethyl carbonate (DEC) from one-step reaction of CO2 with ethanol. The DEC yield 3.09% was improved surprisingly to 49.3% linking composite carrier for the catalyst. Mechanism for improved yield has been proposed which concerns acid-base active sites vis-à-vis CO2-TPD, NH3-TPD and XRD analysis for technology to fundamentally solve the current situation.

Novel ZrFe2ZnO6 with multiple functional composite supports for diethyl carbonate one-step synthesis from CO2 and ethanol

Abstract:The yield of synthesis of diethyl carbonate only from CO2 and ethanol is ca. 5%~15% unless an expensive third monomer is added. To the best of our knowledge, this work represents the first report of DEC yield exceeding 50% without adding a third monomer. A multiple functional composite support "@3A-CaO-CaC2" is the key to the huge increase of the DEC yield. Yield was 3.93% catalyzed by Fe2O3-ZrO2-ZnO (1:1:1) while yield was 57.7% catalyzed by 15 wt% Fe2O3-ZrO2-ZnO@3A-CaO-CaC2. 3A provided a strong skeleton network and physically removed water; CaO played a role in chemically removing water; CaC2 played a role in fast chemically removing water. Our results suggest that chemical water removal has a more significant effect than physical water removal. Moreover, water removal rate rather than water removal capacity is the key to increase DEC yield. In summary, the contribution of this work lies in: the multifunctional composite carrier realizes the function of in-situ water removal, thus greatly improving the efficiency of the catalyst from 3.93% up to 57.7%.

Abstract:Dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation is a crucial step in the coal to ethylene glycol (CTEG) process. Herein, Cu catalyst supported on fibrous mesoporous silica (Cu/FMS) was synthesized via liquid phase deposition technique and applied for the DMO hydrogenation to EG. The catalyst exhibited a remarkable EG selectivity of 96.95% and maintained its activity without deactivation for 1000 h. Fibers of FMS support and liquid phase deposition technology cooperated to give high dispersion of Cu species in the Cu/FMS catalyst, resulting in a high Cu surface area. The formation of Si—O—Cu during catalyst preparation process increased the Cu + /(Cu 0 +Cu + ) ratio and enhanced the thermal and valence stability of Cu species. The high Cu + surface area and Cu stability (thermal and valence stability) of the Cu/FMS catalyst were key factors for achieving superior EG selectivity and ultra-high stability. Abstract:The synthesis of diethyl carbonate starting from ethanol and carbon dioxide was studied. The ZrO2 obtained by precipitation method was used as the catalyst. When the 3A molecular sieve was added as the co-catalyst, the DEC yield was effectively improved about 2.5-fold. The optimal mass ratio of ZrO2 and 3A molecular sieve was 5:2. In addition, the catalyst was characterized by the means of XRD, BET, TEM, NH3-TPD and CO2-TPD. It was indicated that the crystal type, acidic-basic properties of ZrO2, and the pore size of molecular sieve might be the main factors impacting the catalytic activities. By the optimization of the catalyst and the reaction operating conditions, when CO2 and ethanol were charged with the molar ratio of 514/225 mmol, the yield of DEC produced at 150 °C and 7.0 MPa was 0.384 mmol in 2 h with the selectivity of 85.1 %.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:In the production process of bioethanol, stripping is usually required to improve the production efficiency of ethanol, and the generated CO 2 fermentation gas direct emissions contribute to increased carbon. Herein, we prepared Zr x /(FeCe) catalyst by co-precipitation method to catalyze CO 2 and ethanol for production of diethyl carbonate (DEC). Compared with FeCe catalysts, the introduction of Zr significantly improved the acid-base active sites and the oxygen vacancies on the catalyst surface, resulted in higher activity and selectivity of the catalysts. The ratio of Zr:(FeCe) in the catalyst, reaction temperature, pressure and time were optimized, resulting a high DEC selectivity of 96.7% under the Zr 0.1 /(FeCe) catalyst. Finally, we used the fermentation tail gas as CO 2 source to react with ethanol for the formation of DEC, and obtained 56.0% selectivity of DEC. This study provides a new idea for the utilization of CO 2 fermentation gas and the development of cleaner fuel production process.

Abstract:Ethylene glycol (EG) synthesis from dimethyl oxalate (DMO) hydrogenation is a sustainable method compared with the production by petrochemical technology. The Cu/ZnO/SiO2 catalysts prepared by deposition precipitation method have been characterized by XRD, SEM, H2-TPR, and N2 physisorption. Under optimum reaction conditions, a DMO conversion of 100% and EG selectivity of 98% was obtained on the CuZn-5 catalyst. The present work also demonstrates a feasibility method to produce ethanol from DMO hydrogenation. On the catalyst of CuZn-15, the conversion of DMO can reach to 99% with the ethanol selectivity of 64% under the optimized reaction conditions.

Abstract:Mesoporous ceria materials (CeO2-meso) have been prepared through a soft-templating method using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as a template and cerium nitrate as a precursor. The synthesized CeO2-meso materials possess narrow pore size distributions of 5.1-5.4 nm and tunable surface areas (109-182 m(2) g(-1)). As heterogeneous catalysts in the transesterification of ethylene carbonate (EC) with methanol to dimethyl carbonate (DMC), CeO2-meso materials demonstrate superior catalytic performance to the commercial ceria. N-2 adsorption-desorption and CO2-TPD characterization results indicate that the catalytic activity obtained over various CeO2-meso samples depends on their surface areas and basicity. The highest activity is achieved over CeO2-meso-400, affording a DMC yield as much as 73.3%, together with excellent recycling ability. Besides the transesterification of EC with methanol, CeO2-meso is found to be able to catalyze the reactions of other cyclic carbonates and alcohols. In view of the high catalytic performance along with the convenience in catalyst preparation, CeO2-meso-400 compares favorably with the ionic liquids as well as other ceria-based catalytic systems. Abstract:The transesterification reaction between ethylene carbonate (EC) and methanol is a sustainable method to produce dimethyl carbonate (DMC). As typical solid bases, carbon nitride (CN) materials have demonstrated catalytic application in many base-catalyzing reactions. In this work, in order to increase the surface area and improve the base intensity of the CN material, microporous MCM-22 was utilized to load CN, and then treated by NaOH (a.q.), thus enabling CN/MCM-22 composites being transferred into mesoporous CN-SiAlO materials. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized materials were analyzed by XRD, N 2 adsorption–desorption, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TG, and CO 2 -TPD. As mesoporous base catalysts, the CN-SiAlO materials showed superior catalytic activity to the bare CN and CN/MCM-22 in the transesterification reaction of EC with methanol. Under reaction temperature of 130 °C and reaction time of 3 h, the yield of DMC was up to 83.3%.

Abstract:The higher capacity of CO2 adsorption on the surface of magnesium oxide (MgO) with low-coordination O2- sites would effectively enhance the catalytic reduction of CO2. Herein, a series of copper oxide (CuO) and MgO composites with different mass ratios have been prepared by hydrothermal method and used for photothermal synergistic catalytic reduction of CO2 to ethanol. The catalyst with CuO mass ratio of 1.6% shows the best yield (15.17 μmol·g-1·h-1) under 3h Xenon lamp illumination. The improved performance is attributable to the loose nano-sheet structure, uniform dispersion of active sites, the increased specific surface area, medium-strengthbasicity, the high separation efficiency of electrons and holes, and the formation of Mg-O-Cu species. The synthesized CuO and MgO composites with loose nano-sheet structure facilitate the diffusion of reactants CO2, so an excellent CO2 adsorption performance can be obtained. Meanwhile, the introduction of CuO in the form of bivalence provides higher specific surface area and porosity, thus obtaining more active sites. Moreimportantly, the Mg-O-Cu species make the donation of electrons from MgO to CO2 easier, resulting in the breaking of the old Mg-O bond and the formation of C-O bond, thus promoting the adsorption and conversion of CO2 to ethanol.

Abstract:The non-oxidative dehydrogenation of ethanol into acetaldehyde is one of the efficient solutions for biomass upgrading. In this work, a series of copper catalysts supported on MgO with different Cu loadings ranging from 2.5% to 20% were prepared by an impregnation method. The as-synthesized Cu/MgO catalysts were characterized by N2 adsorption, XRD, TEM, CO2-TPD, XPS and TPR. These catalysts were found to be effective for ethanol dehydrogenation into acetaldehyde. As the Cu loading was increased, the ethanol conversion first increased and then leveled off. At a WHSV of 1.5 h−1 and 250 °C, the 20%Cu/MgO catalyst gave an initial conversion of 81.5%, with 97.7% selectivity toward acetaldehyde. Compared to 20%Cu/SiO2, the 20%Cu/MgO catalyst displayed an equivalent initial acetaldehyde yield, higher acetaldehyde selectivity and longer stability.

Abstract:The direct synthesis of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) from CO2 and methanol is a green synthetic route owing to nontoxicity of starting materials and synthetic process. DMC is widely used as a nontoxic solvent, effective fuel additive, and synthetic intermediate in medicine, pharmaceutics, chemistry and other fields. The key challenge is to design efficient and stable catalysts, which mainly includes ionic liquids, alkali carbonates, transition metal oxides, heteropoly acids, supported catalysts. The problems of low yield and difficulties in experiments have not been fundamentally solved. Electro-assist synthesis that provides extra energy for CO2 activation is tried and membranes reactor that separates products in time to increase DMC yield is also studied. Dehydrant catalysts with in-situ hydration for water removal can significantly improve DMC yield and catalysts stability because chemical equilibrium shifts substantially and the catalysts deactivation by produced water poisoning is avoided. This direction will have a considerable breakthrough when appropriate combination of catalysts and dehydrant is obtained.

Abstract:A novel preparation method for MgO nanocrystals was reported. This new method makes use of a conventional hydrogel of Mg(OH)2 derived from inorganic magnesium chloride. A change to alcogel of the hydrogel by repeated wash with anhydrous ethanol followed by processing the alcogel at elevated temperature with flowing dry nitrogen under normal pressure leads to a good control of the sizes of MgO nanocrystals (10–12nm) that are able to resist “sintering” up to 650°C without significant loss of the surface area. This alcogel-based normal-pressure processing proved to be superior to the high-pressure alcogel-supercritical drying synthesis of the nanocrystals. Primary application of the MgO nanocrystals for support of nickel catalyst was successful and gave promising results for highly active as well as very stable Ni/MgO catalysts for the dry reforming of methane to produce syngas.

Abstract:Integrated CO 2 capture and conversion of (ICCC) is one of the most effective solutions to reduce anthropogenic CO 2 emissions, which has attracted extensive public attention. Dual functional materials (DFMs), including adsorbent and catalyst, are the key components to achieve ICCC. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is an ideal adsorbent for ICCC, since it is characterized by high theoretical adsorption capacity, low cost, low energy consumption and extensive sources. It can also be used as DFMs in combination with the Ni catalysts. MgO not only can act as an adsorbent in DFMs but also enhance the catalytic performance of Ni. This review summarizes the advantages and modification methods of MgO as adsorbent and the influence of its adsorption conditions on the adsorption performance. Moreover, the important role of MgO in facilitating the catalytic conversion of CO 2 is highlighted. Future research focuses are proposed for the development of MgO based DFMs with high adsorption capacity, high stability, conversion, and selectivity as well as low cost and energy consumption.
