Abstract:Epoxy resins are the most prominent thermoset material, which has been extensively applied in a diversity of industries including aerospace, coatings, electronics, and biomedical systems. Due to the shortcomings of epoxy, the desire to use nanocomposites has been increased and become a hot research topic. The GO and MOF-filled composites, due to their fantastic mechanical, thermal, and barrier characteristics, have provided crucial insights for decades. Additionally, although the inherent defects of GO and MOF particles have vastly bounded their constructive applications, presently, the GO-modified MOF particles have been prospered. The mixture of the porous MOFs and GO nanosheets reinforces the physicochemical properties that enable them to be used in a wide range of fundamental technologies. We will entirely summarize the recent advances of MOFs decorated GO nanohybrids in the epoxy resin, and their effects on the constructed composite coating's mechanical & thermal, anti-corrosion, and flame-diminishing properties. Reports evidenced that the introduction of GO and MOF-based nanohybrids into Epoxy resin has provided central insights for decades because of their outstanding mechanical, thermal, and barrier characteristics. The plus and minus of GO and MOF nanofillers can be avoided and boosted by modification of GO via MOFs, respectively. A high reduction of peak heat release rate (p-HRR) up to 41% and the total smoke production decrement up to 30% were reported by the addition of GO-MOF nanohybrids to the EP in comparing with GO-EP nanocomposite, proving the improvement of the flame-retardant properties of epoxy resin. Through screening the literature it is obvious that through the introduction of GO/Ln-MOF nanoparticles into Epoxy resin the anti-corrosion stability of the epoxy resin was greatly improved and reached the 500% level. The adhesion strengths were enhanced up to 100%. In addition, the storage modulus ratio improvement percentile would be about 20% and the energy at the breakpoint was improved by 275%.

Abstract:Abstract Epoxy resins are important industrial polymers due to their versatile properties and ease of preparation. They are used on a large scale in coating and adhesives applications. Epoxy resins are prepared by photo-curing technique or thermal curing method in presence of different hardeners. The first method is used for small areas while the latter is utilized mainly for coating applications. Graphene and its oxide have proved themselves as good fillers for epoxy resin since the formed composites demonstrated enhanced mechanical, thermal and electrical properties. This article gives insight view for synthesis techniques and properties of these composites with a deep discussion for electrical and dielectric investigations of epoxy resins loaded with threshold concentration of graphene oxide. A case study of dielectric properties of epoxy resin/modified graphene oxide composite, is presented in which effect of curing technique on dielectric behavior is explored. Although the amount of filler was kept at the threshold concentration (1% by weight) obvious change in the dielectric properties could be observed unlike the rest of properties.

Abstract:Graphene-based fillers possess exceptional properties that encourage researchers toward their incorporation in glass-epoxy (GE) polymer composites. Regarding the mechanical and wear properties of glass-epoxy composites, the effect of graphene oxide (GO) reinforced in glass-epoxy was examined. A decrease in tensile modulus and increase in tensile strength was reported for 1 wt. % of GO. A shift in glass transition temperature Tg was observed with the addition of GO. The cross-link density and storage modulus of the composite decreased with the addition of GO. The decrease in dissipation energy and wear rate was reported with the increase in GO concentration. A simple one-dimensional damage model of nonlinear nature was developed to capture the stress-strain behavior of the unfilled and filled glass-epoxy composite. Tensile modulus E, Weibull scale parameter σo, and Weibull shape parameter β were considered to develop the model. Finally, to understand the failure mechanisms in GO-filled composites, a scanning electron microscopic (SEM) examination was carried out for tensile fractured composites.

Abstract:The change in characteristics in the microstructural features of epoxy nanocomposites created by reinforcing with graphene oxide (GO) obtained by controlled reduction of GO was investigated. The effects of adding various loadings (0.1-0.5 wt%) of RGO in epoxy resin were examined, with a focus on the material's response toward mechanical and thermal properties. The robust interfacial bonding between epoxy resin and RGO is attributed to the higher surface area of the exfoliated layered geometry of graphene and is a key factor contributing to the enhanced physical properties in nanocomposite. The optimal incorporation of 2D nanofillers has been determined to induce a synergistic effect, thereby establishing a percolating network in thermal interface materials designed for high-performance electronic device.

Abstract:Carbon-based nanoparticles (CBNs) are regarded as promising nanofillers in nanocomposites to produce high-performance fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs). To date, no systematic investigations have been carried out on the structural variations of nanofillers and their influences on dispersion characteristics, which give nanocomposites their mechanical and durability properties. Moreover, environmentally unfriendly organic solvents are used to exfoliate and disperse CBNs in a polymer matrix. This study developed a green, easy approach to preparing epoxy/CBN nanocomposites. We demonstrated graphene oxide's (GO) effective dispersion capacity, creating good interface interaction that dramatically influenced properties at loadings as low as 0.4 wt%. The tensile strength and toughness of the epoxy increased by about 49%; and 160%, respectively. Incorporating 0.4 wt% of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), graphene nanoplates (GNPs), or GO into the epoxy increased the modulus storage by around 17%, 25%, and 31%, respectively. Fractography analysis of fracture surfaces indicated the primary reinforcing mechanisms (crack deflection and penning) as well as the secondary mechanism (bridging effect) enhancing the mechanical characteristics of nanocomposites. Incorporating GNPs, GO, or MWCNTs into the epoxy decreased the water absorption at saturation by about 26%, 22%, and 16%, respectively.

Abstract:This study embedded graphene nanoplatelet (GNP), nano-sized aluminum and copper in epoxy-reinforced woven glass fiber. The 0.5 wt% nanofillers were incorporated into epoxy resin. Nanofilled glass fiber/epoxy hybrid composite laminates were fabricated using the hand layup technique. Fillers were dispersed in an epoxy matrix via the ultrasonic processor. The influence of the inclusion of these nanofillers on the physical and mechanical performance of glass fiber/epoxy composites was studied. The resulting hybrid nanocomposites illustrated good characteristics when compared to control specimens. The graphene nanophased glass fiber/epoxy composite achieved the maximum improvement of 59.2%, 91.5%, 74.7%, and 100% in in-plane shear, fracture toughness, impact, and interlaminar shear strength, respectively. Additionally, glass fiber/epoxy filled with GNP behaved as the lowest seawater absorption. Control filled with 0.5 wt% GNP showed strong fiber/matrix interfacial bonding in scanning electron microscopy images after being subjected to a fracture toughness test.

Abstract:The effect of iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) content on the structural and optical parameters of polyvinyl alcohol/graphene (PVA/G) blend has been investigated. Fe2O3 NPs were synthesized by the hydrothermal procedure. Nanocomposite (NC) films of PVA/G filled with different amounts of Fe2O3 NPs were equipped using the solution casting technique. The surface morphology, structural, and optical properties were examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), and ultraviolet‐visible‐near‐IR (UV‐Vis‐NIR) spectrophotometry techniques, respectively. SEM micrographs reveal the homogenous distribution of Fe2O3 NPs in the PVA/G matrix. The XRD analysis exhibits the formulation of the hematite phase of Fe2O3 NPs and the semi‐crystalline nature of PVA/G NC films. The UV‐Vis‐NIR data analysis shows that the optical properties of the PVA/G blend could be tailored via Fe2O3 NPs filling. Wemple–DiDomenico model is utilized to explore the dispersion parameters of the prepared NCs. A significant effect of Fe2O3 NPs filling is realized on the oscillator and dispersion energies, infinite refractive index, dielectric constant, average oscillator strength and the lattice dielectric constant of the NC films. PVA/G filled Fe2O3 NPs are suggested for different optical and storage applications.

Abstract:Abstract In this study, the mechanical properties of plain woven jute-epoxy composite materials were investigated after filling graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) in different proportions. The time dependent changes in the viscosity and temperature of unfilled epoxy resin, with 0.5, 1 and 2 wt.-% graphene nanoplatelets filled epoxy resins were observed. Woven jute reinforced unfilled, 0.5 wt.-% GNPs filled and 1 wt.-% GNPs filled epoxy composite plates were produced by using vacuum assisted resin transfer molding (VARTM) at the same waiting and processing times. Specimens were prepared and subjected to tensile and flexural tests according to ASTM D 3039 and ASTM D 790 standards, respectively. Images were taken and evaluated with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) in areas where tensile damage occurred. It was observed that the gap amount between the fiber and the matrix increased and the interface adhesion decreased as the fill amount increased in the composites produced. The testing results indicated that the tensile and flexural properties of composites decreased at 0.5 wt.-% and 1 wt.-% during the GNPs loading as compared to unfilled composites.

Abstract:Abstract Epoxy resin is one of the most widely used thermoset polymers in high-performance composite materials for lightweight applications. However, epoxy has a high coefficient of friction, which limits its tribological applications. In this study, the effect was investigated of different weight fractions of solid lubricant graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), ranging from 0 to 4.5 wt%, on mechanical and adhesive wear performance of epoxy. Adhesive wear tests covered mild and severe wear regimes. The correlation of tribological and mechanical properties was studied as well. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the failure mechanisms for both tribological and mechanical samples after each test. The results revealed that the addition of GNPs to the epoxy improved its stiffness and hardness but reduced its fracture strength and toughness. Adhesive wear performance exhibited high efficiency with GNP additions and showed reductions in the specific wear rate, the coefficient of friction, and the induced interface temperature by 76%, 37%, and 22%, respectively. A fatigue wear mechanism was predominant as the applied load increased. Most importantly, severe wear signs occurred when the interface temperature reached the heat distortion temperature of the epoxy. The tribological, and mechanical properties showed only a weak correlation to each other. The addition of GNPs to epoxy by less than 4.5 wt% was highly efficient to improve the wear performance while maintaining the fracture strength and toughness. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis shows no chemical interaction between the epoxy matrix with GNPs, which implies its physical interaction.

Abstract:This study introduces a new strategy for functionalizing graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) by bonding a silane agent to its structure. In order to evaluate the efficacy of the proposed method, epoxy resin specimens reinforced with silane modified GNPs (G-Si) are prepared at different weight contents of nanoparticles along with three other types of GNPs (unmodified GNP, graphene oxide GNP [GO], and amino functionalized GNP [G-NH2]). The nanocomposites’ mechanical properties, such as the elastic modulus, ultimate strength, modulus of toughness and fracture toughness are evaluated and compared for different types of functionalization. Raman spectroscopy, thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) are employed to characterize the chemical and structural changes of the functionalized GNPs. The results show that nanocomposites containing G-Si and G-NH2 provide the best results for most of the mentioned properties. The functionalization of GNPs gives the most promising results for fracture toughness of epoxy, showing an 82% increase, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs and XRD analysis reveal that an improved dispersion status is obtained by GNP functionalization.

Abstract:Graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) have attracted tremendous interest due to their unique properties and bonding capabilities. This study focuses on the effect of GNP dispersion on the mechanical, thermal, and morphological behavior of GNP/epoxy nanocomposites. This study aims to understand how the dispersion of GNPs affects the properties of epoxy nanocomposite and to identify the best dispersion approach for improving mechanical performance. A solvent mixing technique that includes mechanical stirring and ultrasonication was used for producing the nanocomposites. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy was used to investigate the interaction between GNPs and the epoxy matrix. The measurements of density and moisture content were used to confirm that GNPs were successfully incorporated into the nanocomposite. The findings showed that GNPs are successfully dispersed in the epoxy matrix by combining mechanical stirring and ultrasonication in a single step, producing well-dispersed nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties. Particularly, the nanocomposites at a low GNP loading of 0.1 wt%, demonstrate superior mechanical strength, as shown by increased tensile properties, including improved Young's modulus (1.86 GPa), strength (57.31 MPa), and elongation at break (4.98). The nanocomposite with 0.25 wt% GNP loading performs better, according to the viscoelastic analysis and flexural properties (113.18 MPa). Except for the nanocomposite with a 0.5 wt% GNP loading, which has a higher thermal breakdown temperature, the thermal characteristics do not significantly alter. The effective dispersion of GNPs in the epoxy matrix and low agglomeration is confirmed by the morphological characterization. The findings help with filler selection and identifying the best dispersion approach, which improves mechanical performance. The effective integration of GNPs and their interaction with the epoxy matrix provides the doorway for additional investigation and the development of sophisticated nanocomposites. In fields like aerospace, automotive, and electronics where higher mechanical performance and functionality are required, GNPs' improved mechanical properties and successful dispersion present exciting potential. Abstract:Motivated by the unique combination of copper oxide (CuO) and GO (graphene oxide) nano-fillers with optimized composition in the PVA (poly vinyl alcohol) polymer, the studies in this paper have been directed towards the synthesis and characterization of (PVA-CuO-GO) polymer nanocomposites. The polymer nanocomposites, i.e., PVA-CuO-GO have been prepared by melt blending technique considering GO and CuO with variable wt.% (ranging from 0.5 to 3 wt.%). The composite was made in the shape of a dumble-like structure. To get the structural information, optical properties, surface morphology and available functional groups in the composites and their mechanisms, XRD (x-ray diffraction), UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer, photoluminescence (PL), FESEM (field emission scanning electron microscope) and FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) techniques have been used, respectively. From XRD data, the effect of wt.% of nano-fillers on crystalline size and micro-strain has been studied. The average crystalline size and micro-strain were calculated as ∼32 nm and ∼0.0250, respectively. From UV-Vis-NIR spectrophotometer data, tauc plots have been studied which tells that the increment in wt.% of nano-fillers causes the optical band gap to increase. On increasing the concentration of nano-fillers from 0.5 to 3 wt.%, the bandgap was increased from 2.5 to 2.8 eV. This tuning of bandgap can be supposed as fine tuning in near UV region. According to PL results, all the composites show a wide emission band in the UV-Vis region with the maximum at 487 nm when excited by 415 nm wavelength. Further, the luminescence intensity has been found to decrease with the addition of wt.% of the loading. The smoothness of the surfaces of the composites has also been studied with EDAX analysis. According to FTIR spectra, the available functional groups were found as: C–O, C–H stretch, C–H asymmetric stretch, C=O carbonyl stretch and C–H bending and deformation vibrations. In view of the characterizing results, the synthesized polymer nanocomposites can be used in several kinds of optoelectronics applications.

Abstract:The nanocomposites thin film was prepared by adding exfoliated GO in epoxy-hardner solution in different weight ratio. We investigate the thermal and surface properties of epoxy-graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposites using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and contact angle measurement method. AFM and contact angle results are supporting that graphene oxide provides the best reinforcement in epoxy. AFM is investigated the dispersion of GO and structural morphology of epoxy nanocomposites. The FTIR results show that exfoliated GO of two-dimensional (2D) shape favors the hardening process of the epoxy matrix, increasing its reaction rate by observing an epoxy stretching frequency at 907 cm −1 . The GO modified with amino group of epoxy lead to the increase of crosslinking density. FTIR absorption peak in 1700–1500 cm −1 regions is due to amino group. This attributes the significant increase of glass transition temperature of epoxy/GO nanocomposites . The contact angle and surface roughness increases with increase in concentration of GO in epoxy shows roughness induced hydrophobic surface. The solid surface energy was calculated by contact angle favors the good dispersion of GO in epoxy matrix.

Abstract:The present work aimed to analyze the roll of carbon nano tubes and graphene nano fillers on the mechanical and thermal characteristics of hollow glass microsphere reinforced epoxy composites. Composites with varying content of hollow glass microballoons (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 wt %) reinforced in epoxy matrix were fabricated. Additionally, two more types of composites, one with graphene nano fillers and the other with carbon nano tube at a constant 0.5 wt %, were fabricated with varying weight percentages of hollow glass microballoons (2, 4, 6, 8, and 10%). The composites were fabricated using an open mold casting process. Composites were tested for thermal and mechanical properties. The tensile and flexural moduli were found to rise as the HGM concentration increased. Graphene-filled HGM/epoxy composites revealed the highest modulus compared with HGM/epoxy and HGM/CNT/epoxy composites. The impact strength of all composite types decreased as the HGM content increased. Neat epoxy specimens revealed low response as compared with all the composites tested. Further, the thermal conductivity of HGM/epoxy composites was lower as compared with other compositions and neat epoxy. Scanning electron microscopy was used to analyze the surface morphological behavior of the composites subjected to flexural test. It was found that HGM/G/E composites with 10% of HGM and 0.5% of graphene by weight in epoxy matrix were the optimum.

Abstract:The solution casting method was utilized to synthesize nanocomposite films of chitosan (Cs)/CuO, Cs/graphene oxide (GO), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/TiO2, CMC/GO, sodium alginate (Na-Alg)/TiO2, and Na-Alg/GO owing to their various applications. The influence of CuO, TiO2 and GO concentration on the optical properties of Cs, CMC and Na-Alg films was studied by UV-Vis Spectroscopy. The absorbance of Cs, CMC and Na-Alg increased with increasing the filler's content, thus reflecting the dependence of Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg properties on the nanofiller's content, and confirming the interactions between individual polymers and CuO, TiO2 and GO nanoparticles. The obtained absorbance values were then used to calculate the absorption coefficient and, hence, the optical band gap values. The characteristic absorption bands of CuO and TiO2 underwent a redshift by increasing the filler's content. The results showed that the optical band gap of Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg decreased with filler's content, and they possessed 1, 2 and 2 band gaps respectively. The obtained results recommended that Cs, CMC, and Na-Alg nanocomposites can be used in optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Mulitfunctional composite material. The focus of this research work is to investigate the influence of graphene oxide (GO) on the mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties of carbon fiber‐reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites. The solvent mixing method with the new addition of a mixing stage is introduced for uniform distribution of graphene oxide in polymer. Different weight percentages of graphene oxide (1%, 1.5%, and 2%) were incorporated into the epoxy matrix, and the resulting composites were subjected to electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) testing. The findings revealed a positive influence on material properties with the percentage of GO. Especially, the electrical conductivity and ILSS values reached up to 7.05 S/m and 11.03 MPa, respectively, when 1.5% GO by weight of the resin was added. The improvement in ILSS reported by 40% compared to the neat CFRP, and this increment was attributed to enhanced bonding between the epoxy matrix and carbon fabric. Maximum thermal conductivity of 1.04 W/m°K obtained at 1% GO filler, which is 15% higher than neat epoxy composite. Overall, these results illustrate the potential of GO as a promising filler to improve the electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties of CFRP composites. Proper optimization of graphene content in a polymer is needed to achieve the best multifunctional composite materials. Highlights The new solvent mixing method is introduced for uniform distribution of graphene oxide in polymer. Maximum thermal and electrical conductivity obtained at different percentages of graphene content in composite. Positive improvement is observed in mechanical, thermal, and electrical at a specific percentage of graphene in the composite. Proper optimization of nanofiller content in composite is needed to assess for maximum performance.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) is a commonly used additive to enhance the mechanical properties of epoxy polymers. The quality of GO and the homogeneity of its dispersion into epoxy can notably improve the mechanical properties of multifunctional polymers. This work aims to clarify contradictory results of the effect of GO on the mechanical properties of bio-based polymers by synthesizing high-quality and low-cost GO. To this end, we investigated the effect of adding solvents (acetone, THF) on the mechanical behavior of polymers subjected to several types of static loading. Five different types of materials were examined: neat epoxy (reference material), enhanced epoxy without solvent, enhanced epoxy with acetone solvent, enhanced epoxy with THF solvent, and epoxy enhanced with pure graphite powder. The concentration of GO or graphite was 0.5 wt%. The findings were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), and Raman Spectroscopy. A significant increase in the tensile strength and fracture toughness of polymers filled with GO without solvent was observed compared to the enhanced materials with solvents. SEM analysis of the fracture surfaces revealed resin penetration into the graphene sheets, indicating strong bonding between amino groups and graphene oxide in the case of the enhanced epoxy without solvent. In contrast, in the enhanced epoxies with solvents, the GO-epoxy bonding appeared to be either deteriorated or destroyed. TGA analysis revealed that both neat and GO-reinforced resins without solvent were thermally stable up to 360 °C. Raman spectra showed epoxy ring vibrations during the curing process, indicating the quantity of free epoxides in the samples.

Abstract:Purpose: Graphene-polymer nanocomposites significantly impact dental filler and antibacterial applications. The study aims to overcome some problems dental filers present and improve their properties and antibacterial activity. Synthesis graphene oxide (GO) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) were used to reinforce two types of commercial hybrid/nano-dental fillings. Methods: Developed acoustic-solution-sonication-casting methods were applied to fabricate the new graphene-polymer-dental filler nanocomposites. The structure, morphology, rheological and mechanical properties, and antibacterial of the newly fabricated filling-PMMA/ GO nanocomposites were investigated. Results: Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) showed a significant interaction between the filling and the additional materials. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed a considerable change in crystalline behavior. Optical microscope (OM) with field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) pictures demonstrated a substantial change in the morphology of the samples with a homogeneous and fine dispersion of the nanomaterials in the filler matrix. Multi-frequency ultrasound mechanical properties measured the ultrasonic velocity, absorption coefficient, compressibility, bulk modulus, and other mechanical properties that notably enhanced after GO contributed up to 325% of the ultrasonic absorption coefficient compared with hybrid/nano-fillers. Rheological properties were measured as viscosity, absorption coefficient, and specific viscosity, which significantly improved after adding PMMA and incorporating GO up to 57% of the viscosity, compared with hybrid/nano-fillers. The inhibition zone of moth bacteria, such as Enterococcus faecalis and E. staph bacteria, improved after the contribution of GO nanosheets up to 46%. Conclusion: Nanofillers nanocomposites presented better properties and inhabitances zone diameter of antibacterial.

Abstract:We here report the photosensitive nanocomposites as the new rapid prototyping materials. The nanocomposites are prepared using the properly surface-modified sepiolite nanofibers, graphene oxide, TiO2 and SiO2 nanoparticles as the reinforcing fillers in the epoxy-based resin. These nanocomposites are investigated about the mechanical properties, viscosity and light absorption. By fitting the rheological test results into the Krieger-Dougherty equation, the influences of the different-shaped fillers on the material viscosity and the maximum packing fraction of the fillers are obtained. The extinction coefficients of the inorganic fillers are obtained using UV–Vis spectroscopy. The mechanical properties of the nanocomposites are improved due to the surface-modified inorganic fillers. It is found that the as-prepared materials are appropriate for stereolithography and digital light processing, with which we succeed in fabricating the dental model of high dimensional accuracy.
