Abstract:This study presents an analysis of the characterization and crystal structure of a series of materials, namely ZrW2-x Mo x O8 (0 ≦ x ≦ 1). The isotropic coefficient of thermal expansion of these materials exhibited a systematic and progressive approach from negative values to zero thermal expansion, which is dependent on the increasing value of x. The range of the linear coefficient of thermal expansion, α l , for the entire series was observed to be between −8.44 × 10−6/°C and approximately −4.0 × 10−6/°C. In-situ X-ray diffraction and In-situ Raman spectroscopy were used to study the different structures of ZrW2-x Mo x O8 (0 ≦ x ≦ 1), elucidating the changing rule of the thermal expansion coefficient and the mechanism of the ordered-disordered phase transition. According to Rietveld refinement results, Mo doping causes a decrease in the lattice parameters of the entire system and slows down the transverse motion of the bridge oxygen atoms in the small cell volume, which reduces the negative thermal expansion. As the interaction between W (Mo) and a single coordination oxygen atom weakened, the phase transition temperature decreased. This is because the W(Mo)1O4 and W(Mo)2O4 polyhedron can be flipped more easily via the "ratchet" process due to the lower electronegativity of the Mo atom (2.16 Pauling) compared to that of the W atom (2.36 Pauling). Furthermore, the impact of Mo substitution for W sites on the electronic structure was initially reported through X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Abstract:A new ternary ZrxCuyCz phase is observed in the reactively infiltrated ZrC/W composite. The X‐ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses reveal that the ZrxCuyCz phase has a same rocksalt structure as ZrC, but possesses sixfold long‐period structure with lattice constant of 2.88 ± 0.07 nm. This finding indicates the existence of ZrxCuyCz compound, which expands the ternary carbides and nitrides permutation space.

Abstract:The finite-temperature density-functional theory and quasiharmonic lattice dynamics are used to calculate the Gibbs free energy and quasiharmonic phonons of the hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) and omega (omega) crystal structures for Zr. The hcp phonon dispersions agree with experiment; the omega phonon dispersions have not been measured yet. From the free energy, the volume thermal expansion coefficients of alpha-Zr are predicted. The calculated volume thermal expansion coefficients for alpha-Zr are in good agreement with the experiment data at T>100 K. Our calculated results found that at zero-temperature the lowest-energy phase is not the omega but the hcp phase. This conclusion is in accordance with the result of Schnell and Albers, but in disagreement with those of Ahuja and Jona and Marcus. The predicted phase boundary of alpha ->omega is in good agreement with the available experiment; however, other theoretical results are far from the experiment at high temperatures.

Abstract:The negative thermal expansion in ZrW 2 O 8 was investigated on a microscopic scale by temperature dependent measurements of the electric field gradients at the nuclear probe 187 W(β - ) 187 Re using time differential perturbed angular correlation spectroscopy. Two distinct nuclear quadrupole interactions I V zz Re1 l= 18.92(4) • 10 21 V/m 2 , η Re1 = 0.0 and I V zz Re1 l = 4.55(2) • 10 21 V/m 2 , η Re1 = 0.053(3) were observed at 295 K, which are assigned to the two crystallographically distinct W0 4 tetrahedra of the room temperature structure. Ab initio calculations of electron densities and electric field gradients with 1:7 Re-impurities using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave package WIEN97 yield the electric field gradients V zz Re1 = 12.63 • 10 21 V/m 2 , η Re1 = 0.0 and V zz Re2 =4.90 • 10 21 V/m 2 , η Re2 =0.0. The observed temperature dependence of the nuclear quadrupole interactions agrees well with the structural phase transition at 428 K observed by neutron and x-ray diffraction. Our experiments corroborate the suggested mechanism of coupled librations of rigid ZrO 6 octahedra and WO 4 tetrahedra, which is an alternative description of transverse vibrations of oxygen atoms in Zr-O-W bonds, for the negative thermal expansion in ZrW 2 O 8

Abstract:The hydration and ammonization of ZrW2O8 is known to lead to positive and negative thermal expansion behaviour respectively. We report ab-initio calculations to understand this anomalous behaviour. We identify the crucial low energy phonon modes involving translations, rotations and distortions of WO4 and ZrO6 polyhedra, which lead to NTE in ZrW2O8 in pure and ammoniated forms; however, the rotation and distortion motions get inhibited on hydration and lead to positive thermal expansion. We demonstrate that the thermal expansion coefficient could be tailored by engineering the phonon dynamics of a material.

Abstract:ZrW2 O8 thin film was synthesized using sol-gel method.The structure and morphology of the resul-ting film were characterized by Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD),Scanning electron microscopy (SEM)and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS)respectively.The results show that the films are single phase ofα-ZrW2 O8 .The surface of ZrW2 O8 thin film has small holes without obvious cracks.On the whole,the film is com-posed of rod-like particles,during which film is composed of small particles.The thickness of the film is about 500 nm.ZrW2 O8 thin film is transparent in the visible region with two absorb peaks in the ultraviolet region, which are 348.3 and 277.2 nm respectively.

Abstract:A powder X-ray diffraction experiment was performed on cubic Zr1-xHfxW2O8 (x=0.25, 0.50 and 0.75) solid solutions from 90 to 560 K. The lattice parameters of Zr1-xHfxW2O8 at 121 K decreased linearly with increasing Hf contents, due to smaller ionic radius of hafnium than that of zirconium. Transition temperatures due to α-β structural phase transition increased with increasing Hf contents, reflecting the decrease of lattice free volume related to the orientation of unshared vertex of WO4. Anomaly in the heat capacity of Zr0.5Hf0.5W2O8 was observed around 450 K which was 9 K lower than that by X-ray diffraction method. Transition entropy of Zr0.5Hf0.5W2O8 was 2.1 J mol-1 K-1, consistent with those of ZrW2O8 and HfW2O8. This consistent entropy supports that Zr1-xHfxW2O8 (x=0-1.0) has the same order-disorder phase transition mechanism.

Abstract:A2M3O12-based materials have received considerable attention owing to their wide range of negative thermal expansion (NTE) and chemical flexibility toward novel materials design. However, the structure and NTE mechanism remain challenging. Here, Zr4+ and V5+ are used as a unit to compensatorily replace Sc3+ and Mo6+ in Sc2Mo3O12 to tune its thermal expansion. Its crystal structure, phase transition, NTE property, and corresponding mechanisms are studied by high-resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, ultralow-frequency Raman spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The results show that Zr0.3Sc1.7Mo2.7V0.3O12 adopts an orthorhombic (Pbcn) structure at room temperature, with V atoms occupying the position of Mo1 atoms and Zr atoms occupying the position of Sc atoms, and transforms to monoclinic (P21/a) structure at ∼133 K (45 K lower than that of Sc2Mo3O12). It exhibits excellent NTE in a broader range. Most of the phonon modes below 350 cm-1 have negative Grüneisen parameters, of which the lowest and next-lowest frequency (38.5 and 45.8 cm-1) optical phonon modes arising from the translational vibrations of the Sc/Zr and Mo/V atoms in the plane of the nonlinear linkage Sc/Zr-O-Mo/V have the largest and next-largest negative Grüneisen parameters and positive total anharmonicity, and contribute most to the NTE.

Abstract:The chemical designability and diversity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) endow them with plenty of anomalous properties, such as negative thermal expansion (NTE). Herein, we investigated the thermal expansion behaviors of the well-known MOF-801, which has been widely used in water adsorption and gas separation. The analyses of variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction and Rietveld refinements revealed a fascinating transition from positive thermal expansion to NTE. Further in situ Raman spectra and pair distribution function investigations shed light on the transition being attributed to the local Zr6O8 node distortion rather than a long-range phase transition. Our findings will enhance the comprehension of NTE and contribute to the effective utilization of MOF-801 over a broad temperature range.

Abstract:ZrW2O8 exhibits isotropic negative thermal expansions over its entire temperature range of stability, yet so far its physical properties and mechanism have not been fully addressed. In this article, the electronic structure, elastic, thermal, optical and phonon properties of α-ZrW2O8 are systematically investigated from first principles. The agreements between the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) calculation and experiments are found to be quite satisfactory. The calculation results can be useful in relevant material designs, e.g., when ZrW2O8 is employed to adjust the thermal expansion coefficient of ceramic matrix composites.

Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure of ZrW2O8: Theory vs. Experiment

Abstract:Extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) is well-suited for investigations of structure and disorder of complex materials. Recently, experimental measurements and analysis of EXAFS have been carried out to elucidate the mechanisms responsible for the negative thermal expansion (NTE) in zirconium tungstate (ZrW2O8). In contrast to previous work suggesting that transverse O-displacements are largely responsible, the EXAFS analysis suggested that correlated rotations and translations of octahedra and tetrahedra within the structure are a major source. In an effort to resolve this controversy, we have carried out ab initio calculations of the structure, lattice vibrations, and EXAFS of ZrW2O8 based on real-space multiple-scattering calculations using the FEFF9 code and auxiliary calculations of structure and Debye-Waller factors. We find that the theoretical simulations are consistent with observed EXAFS, and show that both of the above mechanisms contribute to the dynamical structure of ZrW2O8.

Abstract:We present temperature dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurments, accompanied byab-initio calculations of phonon spectra and elastic properties as a function of pressure to understand anharmonicity of phonons and to study the mechanism of negative thermal expansion and negative linear compressibility behaviour of ZnAu2(CN)4. The mechanism is identified in terms of specific anharmonic modes that involve bending of the Zn(CN)4-Au- Zn(CN)4 linkage. The high-pressure phase transition at about 2 GPa is also investigated and found to be related to softening of a phonon mode at the L-point at the Brillouin zone boundary and its coupling with a zone-centre phonon and an M-point phonon in the ambient pressure phase. Although the phase transition is primarily driven by a L-point soft phonon mode, which usually leads to a second order transition with a 2 x 2 x 2 supercell, in the present case the structure is close to an elastic instability that leads to a weakly first order transition.
Negative thermal expansion in α-Zr2SP2O12 based on phase transition- and framework-type mechanisms

Abstract:Abstract Materials with negative coefficients of thermal expansion (CTEs) can be used to prepare composites with specific CTE values. Negative thermal expansion behavior can be primarily attributed to two types of mechanisms: phase transition- and framework-type mechanisms. This paper reports Zr 2 SP 2 O 12 , which has unique negative thermal expansion behavior involving both mechanisms. Zr 2 SP 2 O 12 undergoes a framework-type mechanism at temperatures 453 K and an isosymmetric phase transition at 393–453 K. The volumetric CTE of α-Zr 2 SP 2 O 12 is ~−70 p.p.m./K during the isosymmetric phase transition, and this value can be decreased by decreasing the proportion of sulfur. The minimum volumetric CTE of α-Zr 2 S 0.9 P 2 O 12-δ is ~−108 p.p.m./K in the temperature range of 393–453 K. Between 303 and 773 K, the volume of α-Zr 2 S 0.9 P 2 O 12 − δ is reduced by ~1.3%. Finally, this paper presents methods for the hydrothermal synthesis of α-Zr 2 SP 2 O 12 and for controlling the sulfur content.

Molecular dynamics simulation of zirconium tungstate amorphization and the amorphous-crystalline interface

Abstract:Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed to provide a conceptual understanding of the amorphous-crystalline interface for a candidate negative thermal expansion (NTE) material, ZrW 2 O 8 . Simulations of pressure-induced amorphization at 300 K indicate that an amorphous phase forms at pressures of 10 GPa and greater, and this phase persists when the pressure is subsequently decreased to 1 bar. However, the crystalline phase is recovered when the slightly distorted 5 GPa phase is relaxed to 1 bar. Simulations were also performed on a two-phase model consisting of the high-pressure amorphous phase in direct contact with the crystalline phase. Upon equilibration at 300 K and 1 bar, the crystalline phase remains unchanged beyond a thin layer of disrupted structure at the crystalline-amorphous interface. Differences in local atomic structure at the interface are quantified from the simulation trajectories.
Calorimetric and x-ray diffraction studies of α-to-β structural phase transitions in HfW 2 O 8 and ZrW 2 O 8

Abstract:A powder x-ray diffraction experiment was performed on cubic HfW2O8 and ZrW2O8 from 90 to 560 K. The lattice parameter and absolute negative thermal expansion coefficient of HfW2O8 are smaller than those of ZrW2O8. The heat capacity of HfW2O8 was measured from 340 to 520 K using an adiabatic scanning calorimeter. An anomaly in heat capacity of HfW2O8 corresponding to the α-to-β structural phase transition was clearly detected around 463 K. The phase transition temperature of HfW2O8 by the calorimeter is 26 K higher than that of ZrW2O8. The entropy of transition of HfW2O8 is the same magnitude as that of ZrW2O8, indicating that the mechanism of the phase transition of HfW2O8 and ZrW2O8 is the same.

Abstract:The phase behaviors of ZrMo2-xWxO8 (x = 0.2 to 2.0) solid solutions have been studied systematically by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) techniques. A low-temperature (LT) orthorhombic ZrMo2-xWxO8 (x = 0.2-2.0) phase is formed by dehydration of the precursors ZrMo2-xWxO7(OH)(2)(H2O)(2) (x = 0.2-2.0) within a temperature range from 124 to 203 degrees C. Among them, the orthorhombic ZrMo2-xWxO8 solid solutions are able to convert further into metastable cubic phases within an x-dependent temperature range from 502 to 552 degrees C; the trigonal phases become dominant at higher temperature for Mo-rich solid solutions. However, no trigonal phases are formed in the high-temperature region for W-rich solid solutions. The absence of decomposition of ZrMo2-xWxO8 (x = 0.2 to 1.6) solid solutions up to 800 degrees C indicates that the molybdenum substitution leads to a remarkable improvement of the thermal stability in comparison with ZrW2O8. Based on the phase behaviors reported in this paper, an approach for the preparation of cubic Mo-rich solid solutions ZrMo2-xWxO8 with attractive negative thermal expansion (NTE) properties is demonstrated. Efficient Calculation of the Negative Thermal Expansion in ZrW2O8

Abstract:We present a study of the origin of the negative thermal expansion (NTE) on ZrW2O8 by combining an efficient approach for computing the dynamical matrix with the Lanczos algorithm for generating the phonon density of states in the quasi-harmonic approximation. The simulations show that the NTE arises primarily from the motion of the O-sublattice, and in particular, from the transverse motion of the O atoms in the W-O and W-O-Zr bonds. In the low frequency range these combine to keep the WO4 tetrahedra rigid and induce internal distortions in the ZrO6 octahedra. The force constants associated with these distortions become stronger with expansion, resulting in negative Grüneisen parameters and NTE from the low frequency modes that dominate the positive contributions from the high frequency modes. This leads us to propose an anharmonic, two-frequency Einstein model that quantitatively captures the NTE behavior.
Origin of Negative Thermal Expansion in Zn2GeO4 Revealed by High Pressure Study

Abstract:Zn2GeO4, as an open-framework structure compound, exhibits negative thermal expansion (NTE) below room temperature. In this work, we investigated the structural stability and phonon modes employing the x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy under high pressure up to 23.0 GPa within a diamond anvil cell, and we observed that a pressure-induced irreversible amorphization took place around 10.1 GPa. Bulk modulus, pressure coefficients, and Gruneisen parameters were measured for the initial rhombohedral structure. Several low-frequency rigid-unit modes are found to have negative Gruneisen parameter, which accounts for the primary part of NTE in Zn2GeO4. These results further confirm the hypothesis that the pressure-induced amorphization and the negative thermal expansion are correlated phenomena.
Uniaxial Negative Thermal Expansion, Negative Linear Compressibility, and Negative Poisson's Ratio Induced by Specific Topology in Zn[Au(CN)2]2

Abstract:The well-known idea of "structure determines properties" can be understood profoundly in the case of hexagonal zinc dicyanometalate. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show the uniaxial negative thermal expansion (NTE) and negative linear compressibility (NLC) properties of Zn[Au(CN)2]2. The temperature dependence of phonon frequencies within the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA) is investigated. The abnormal phonon hardening (frequency increase on heating) is detected in the ranges of 0-225, 320-345, and 410-430 cm-1, which can be indicative of the unusual physical properties of Zn[Au(CN)2]2. Due to the significance of low-energy phonon frequencies in Zn[Au(CN)2]2, in this work, the corresponding vibrational mode of the lowest-frequency optical phonon at the zone center is analyzed. The specific topology of a springlike framework that will produce the effects of a compressed spring on heating and an extended spring under hydrostatic pressure is identified and leads to the coexistence of uniaxial-NTE and NLC behaviors in Zn[Au(CN)2]2. The distinguishing phonon group velocity along the a axis and c axis facilitates different responses for both the axes under temperature and hydrostatic pressure field. Through an analysis and visualization of the spatial dependence of elastic tensors, it is found that a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR) is presented in all projection planes due to the specific topology.

Abstract:The structural evolution of lanthanum aluminum trioxide (LaAlO3) crystals grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method has been investigated by the in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction method in the temperature range between 296 and 1195 K. The square of the AlO6 octahedral rotation angle in the rhombohedral structure decreased linearly near the transition temperature, suggesting that a second-order phase transition occurs at circa 839 K. Changes in the volumetric thermal expansion coefficient show a significant discontinuity at the transition point, supporting an experimental evidence by dilatometry in the literature.
