Abstract:Conserved quantities such as energy or the electric charge of a closed system, or the Runge-Lenz vector in Kepler dynamics are determined by its global, local, or accidental symmetries. They were instrumental to advances such as the prediction of neutrinos in the (inverse) beta decay process and the development of self-consistent approximate methods for isolated or thermal many-body systems. In contrast, little is known about conservation laws and their consequences in open systems. Recently, a special class of these systems, called parity-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric systems, has been intensely explored for their remarkable properties that are absent in their closed counterparts. A complete characterization and observation of conserved quantities in these systems and their consequences is still lacking. Here we present a complete set of conserved observables for a broad class of $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric Hamiltonians and experimentally demonstrate their properties using single-photon linear optical circuit. By simulating the dynamics of a four-site system across a fourth-order exceptional point, we measure its four conserved quantities and demonstrate their consequences. Our results spell out non-local conservation laws in non-unitary dynamics and provide key elements that will underpin self-consistent analysis of non-Hermitian quantum many-body systems that are forthcoming.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized Schrodinger equation, a novel state-vector function that obeys photon motion equation under three quantum conditions has been constructed for a photon in one dimension, which can describe completely the properties of a photon as a relativistic free particle, including its energy and momentum and spin angular momentum. The state-vector function not only defines microscopic parameters such as the probability amplitude and the phase for a photon, but also relates them with the macroscopic polarization of a light beam. As an example, it successfully explains the puzzling polarization problem of a light beam.

Abstract:Conservation laws are one of the most generic and useful concepts in physics. In nonlinear optical parametric processes, conservation of photonic energy, momenta and parity often lead to selection rules, restricting the allowed polarization and frequencies of the emitted radiation. Here we present a new scheme to derive conservation laws in optical parametric processes in which many photons are annihilated and a single new photon is emitted. We then utilize it to derive two new such conservation laws. Conservation of reflection-parity (RP) arises from a generalized reflection symmetry of the polarization in a superspace, analogous to the superspace employed in the study of quasicrystals. Conservation of space-time-parity (STP) similarly arises from space-time reversal symmetry in superspace. We explore these new conservation laws numerically in the context of high harmonic generation and outline experimental set-ups where they can be tested.

Abstract:A conserved photon current is derived from the commutation relations satisfied by the electromagnetic four-potential and field tensor operators. The density is found to be a sum over positive and negative frequency terms, both of which contribute a positive number density and propagate in a common direction. Discrete positive and negative frequency excitations are both identified as photons. Photon number, equal to the spatial integral of photon density, is conserved in the absence of sources and sinks.

Photon under repeated transverse Lorentz boosts: An apparent paradox

Abstract:We investigate the effects of the repeated application of Lorentz-boosts to the four momentum of a photon in the transverse direction and observe that this can take us to a reference frame in which the direction of the photon's momentum is apparently reversed. We further extend this to an infinite succession of infinitesimal transverse Lorentz-boosts and show it amounts to a rotation of the photon's momentum, while the transformation is not a simple rotation but a Lorentz transformation. These possibly surprising results can be understood in light of the Wigner rotation: the combination of Lorentz-boosts along different directions amounts to a Lorentz-boost combined with a rotation. The presented exercises are some more illustrations of the counterintuitive behavior of Lorentz-boost combinations.

Abstract:The topology of photons in vacuum is interesting because there are no photons with k=0 , creating a hole in momentum space. We show that while the set of all photons forms a trivial vector bundle γ over this momentum space, the R and L photons form topologically nontrivial subbundles γ± with first Chern numbers ∓2 . In contrast, γ has no linearly polarized subbundles, and there is no Chern number associated with linear polarizations. It is a known difficulty that the standard version of Wigner's little group method produces singular representations of the Poincaré group for massless particles. By considering representations of the Poincaré group on vector bundles we obtain a version of Wigner's little group method for massless particles which avoids these singularities. We show that any massless bundle representation of the Poincaré group can be canonically decomposed into irreducible bundle representations labeled by helicity, which in turn can be associated to smooth irreducible Hilbert space representations. This proves that the R and L photons are globally well defined as particles and that the photon wave function can be uniquely split into R and L components. This formalism offers a method of quantizing the electromagnetic field without invoking discontinuous polarization vectors as in the traditional scheme. We also demonstrate that the spin-Chern number of photons is not a purely topological quantity. Lastly, there has been an extended debate on whether photon angular momentum can be split into spin and orbital parts. Our work explains the precise issues that prevent this splitting. Abstract:We present a general theory for calculating photon transitions in arbitrarily time-varying metamaterials. This theory circumvents the difficulties of conventional approaches in solving such a general problem by exploiting the eigenstates of time-dependent number operators. We demonstrate here the temporal evolution of these operators and the related transition probabilities for the cases of logistic and linear permittivity profiles. The theory is potentially extensible to arbitrary space-time modulations and may hence lead to multiple novel quantum effects and applications.

Abstract:As is known, the existence of a small noncommutativity between coordinates would generate nonlocal self-interactions in the electromagnetic theory. To explore some consequences of this effect on the propagation of photons we consider Moyal space half-filled with a static and homogeneous electric field and analyze electromagnetic fluctuations on top of this step-like background. Both the localization of photons and the possibility of photon production by strong electric fields are addressed. Several aspects of the Klein paradox in this setup are discussed as well.

Abstract:While quantum mechanics precludes the perfect knowledge of so-called "conjugate" variables, such as time and frequency, we discuss the importance of compromising to retain a fair knowledge of their combined values. In the case of light, we show how time and frequency photon correlations allow us to identify a new type of photon emission, which can be used to design a new type of quantum source where we can choose the distribution in time and energy of the emitted photons.

Abstract:We have shown that all "single-photon" and "photon-pair" states, produced in atomic transitions, and in parametric down conversion by nonlinear optical crystals, may be represented by positive Wigner densities of the relevant sets of mode amplitudes. The light fields of all such states are represented as a real probability ensemble (not a pseudoensemble) of solutions of the unquantized Maxwell equation. The local realist analysis of light-detection events in spatially separated detectors requires a theory of detection which goes beyond the currently fashionable single-mode photon theory. It also requires us to recognize that there is a payoff between detector efficiency and signal-noise discrimination. Using such a theory, we have demonstrated that all experimental data, both in atomic cascades and in parametric down conversions, have a consistent local realist explanation based on the unquantized Maxwell field. Finally we discuss current attempts to demonstrate Schroedinger-cat-like behaviour of microwave cavities interacting with Rydberg atoms. Here also we demonstrate that there is no experimental evidence which cannot be described by the unquantized Maxwell field. We conclude that misuse of the Photon Concept has resulted in a mistaken recognition of "nonlocal" phenomena.

Abstract:It is commonly assumed that zero and non-zero photon mass would lead to qualitatively different physics. For example, massless photon has two polarization degrees of freedom, while massive photon at least three. This feature seems counter-intuitive. In this paper we will show that if we change propagator by setting $i \epsilon$ (needed to avoid poles) to a finite value, and also introduce it in a way that breaks Lawrentz symmetry, then we would obtain the continuous transition we desire once the speed of the photons is "large enough" with respect to "preferred" frame. The two transverse polarization degrees of freedom will be long lived, while longitudinal will be short lived. Their lifetime will be near-zero if $m \ll \sqrt{\epsilon}$, which is where the properties of two circular polarizations arize. The $i \epsilon$ corresponds to the intensity of Mensky's "continuous measurement" and the short lifetime of the longitudinal photons can be understood as the "conversion" of quantum degrees of freedom (photons) into "classical" ones by the measurement device (thus getting rid of the former). While the "classical" trajectory of the longitudinal photons does arize, it plays no physical role due to quantum Zeno effect: intuitively, it is similar to an electron being kept at a ground state due to continuous measurement.
Time symmetry in quantum theories and beyond

Abstract:There exists a stark tension among different formulations of quantum theory as some are inherently time-symmetric while others are time-asymmetric. This tension is crisply captured when considering physical theories as theories of processes. We present the process theory of quantum physics, QPhys, which treats classical systems as internal to quantum theory. We provide three ways to incorporate time symmetry in QPhys. The first restricts the process theory of QPhys to one that satisfies an additional retrocausality constraint. The second is a novel approach, which extends the notions of causality and retrocausality to apply to systems along with processes. Utilizing this approach, we create a toy model for particle physics , where the causal and retrocausal systems correspond to particles and anti-particles respectively. The third approach extends QPhys to a supertheory that satisfies neither a causality nor a retrocausality constraint. To avoid unphysical predictions we modify either its composition rule or its processes.

Abstract:In this paper, I introduce two new concepts (Minkowski quasi-photon and invariance of physical definitions) to elucidate the theory developed in my previous work [Can. J. Phys. 93 (2015) 1510], and to clarify the criticisms by Partanen and coworkers [Phys. Rev. A 95 (2017) 063850]. Minkowski quasi-photon is the carrier of the momentum and energy of light in a medium under the sense of macroscopic averages of light-matter microscopic interactions. I firmly argue that required by the principle of relativity, the definitions of all physical quantities are invariant. I shed a new light on the significance of the symmetry of physical laws for resolution of the Abraham–Minkowski debate on the momentum of light in a medium. I illustrate by relativistic analysis why the momentums and energies of the electromagnetic subsystem and the material subsystem form Lorentz four-vectors separately for a closed system of light-matter interactions, and why the momentum and energy of a non-radiation field are owned by the material subsystem, and they are not measurable experimentally. Finally, I also provide an elegant proof for the invariance of physical definitions, and a clear definition of the Lorentz covariance for general physical quantities and tensors.

Abstract:This study identifies a previously overlooked peculiarity resulted by the relativistic Doppler effect, suggesting a possible violation of photon energy conservation by a thought experiment. To resolve this, a revised theory is proposed relying on considering fixed intrinsic properties for photons in their rest frame, called the Light Intrinsic Frame of Reference (LIFOR). This theory preserves the constancy of light speed, is fully consistent with special relativity, and explains frequency shifts through Lorentz transformations, leading to a relativistic justification for Planck’s quantization of radiation energy.
