It was autumn of 2017, and on my bike to work at HuffPost's downtown San Francisco office, I pedalled past people with scarves over their mouths, N95 masks. Abstract:Living with fire is a challenge for human communities because they are influenced by socio-economic, political, ecological and climatic processes at various spatial and temporal scales. Over the course of 2 days, the authors discussed how communities could live with fire challenges at local, national and transnational scales. Exploiting our diverse, international and interdisciplinary expertise, we outline generalizable properties of fire-adaptive communities in varied settings where cultural knowledge of fire is rich and diverse. At the national scale, we discussed policy and management challenges for countries that have diminishing fire knowledge, but for whom global climate change will bring new fire problems. Finally, we assessed major fire challenges that transcend national political boundaries, including the health burden of smoke plumes and the climate consequences of wildfires. It is clear that to best address the broad range of fire problems, a holistic wildfire scholarship must develop common agreement in working terms and build across disciplines. We must also communicate our understanding of fire and its importance to the media, politicians and the general public.This article is part of the themed issue 'The interaction of fire and mankind'.

Abstract:Abstract This article examines the interconnections between fire and Indigenous politics, geographies and epistemologies. More precisely, the article focuses on how different modes of emergent nonfiction media practice are engaging with the pyrological and interrogating its entanglements with Indigenous forms of existence and ecological-political struggle in a moment of escalating climate catastrophe and capitalist settler-colonial exploitation and extraction. The article explores how the pyrological and the ecological are framed and taken up in markedly contrasting discursive, visual and formal ways across these modes of nonfiction media practice. At a broader conceptual level, I examine these divergent engagements with pyro-ecologies to map out how countervailing currents in contemporary documentary practice differently approach conceptualisations of both the evidentiary and the epistemological in relation to Indigenous politics and ontologies. I argue that these engagements manifest differently across these works depending upon the degree to which they remain attentive to – and engaged with – Indigenous modes of ecologically-conscious land-based knowledge, pedagogy and evidence.

Abstract:Natural environments are changing with shifts in fire regimes. A little-understood impact is change to the interactions people have with forests. Generally, forests invoke positive feelings, but wildfire changes both forests and people's experiences of them. These were investigated with attention to the ever-changing physical characteristics of fire-adapted forests. In a mixed method approach, interviews were used to explore the subjective experiences of 57 adults in forests at different times since fire. A photo-based survey with 529 responses enabled further analysis of forest characteristics in experience. The Human-Environment Interaction (HEI) model guided analysis of experience events on four factors which shape them: the physical environment, activities undertaken, personal resources and social support. We found that bushfires create potent environments by changing the sense of enclosure, colours and dead trees in forests. Different levels of environmental potency combine with activities and personal resources to invoke different types of experience, the main ones being aesthetic (feelings of pleasure) restorative (relaxation) and loss/recovery (sadness mixed with hope). Personal resources are particularly important in the loss/recovery type. People who are connected to nature (one such resource), feel the loss of forest elements, but also notice forest recovery, which inspires hope. As fire frequency increases with climate change, experiences can be expected to become more negative overall. However, thought-based adaptations may be occurring in the spread of beliefs that forests are inherently dynamic and in the emergence of a fire aesthetic. Forest managers can assist people to come to terms with wildfires by providing access to forests postfire and by engagement to encourage adaptation.

Abstract:1.Fire is a powerful ecological and evolutionary force that regulates organismal traits, population sizes, species interactions, community composition, carbon and nutrient cycling, and ecosystem function. It also presents a rapidly growing societal challenge, due to both increasingly destructive wildfires and fire exclusion in fire‐dependent ecosystems. As an ecological process, fire integrates complex feedbacks among biological, social, and geophysical processes, requiring coordination across several fields and scales of study.2.Here, we describe the diversity of ways in which fire operates as a fundamental ecological and evolutionary process on Earth. We explore research priorities in six categories of fire ecology: (1) characteristics of fire regimes, (2) changing fire regimes, (3) fire effects on aboveground ecology, (4) fire effects on belowground ecology, (5) fire behaviour, and (6) fire ecology modelling.3.We identify three emergent themes: the need to study fire across temporal scales, to assess the mechanisms underlying a variety of ecological feedbacks involving fire, and to improve representation of fire in a range of modelling contexts.4. Synthesis: As fire regimes and our relationships with fire continue to change, prioritizing these research areas will facilitate understanding of the ecological causes and consequences of future fires and rethinking fire management alternatives.

Abstract:Fire is an integral component of ecosystems globally and a tool that humans have harnessed for millennia. Altered fire regimes are a fundamental cause and consequence of global change, impacting people and the biophysical systems on which they depend. As part of the newly emerging Anthropocene, marked by human-caused climate change and radical changes to ecosystems, fire danger is increasing, and fires are having increasingly devastating impacts on human health, infrastructure, and ecosystem services. Increasing fire danger is a vexing problem that requires deep transdisciplinary, trans-sector, and inclusive partnerships to address. Here, we outline barriers and opportunities in the next generation of fire science and provide guidance for investment in future research. We synthesize insights needed to better address the long-standing challenges of innovation across disciplines to (i) promote coordinated research efforts; (ii) embrace different ways of knowing and knowledge generation; (iii) promote exploration of fundamental science; (iv) capitalize on the "firehose" of data for societal benefit; and (v) integrate human and natural systems into models across multiple scales. Fire science is thus at a critical transitional moment. We need to shift from observation and modeled representations of varying components of climate, people, vegetation, and fire to more integrative and predictive approaches that support pathways toward mitigating and adapting to our increasingly flammable world, including the utilization of fire for human safety and benefit. Only through overcoming institutional silos and accessing knowledge across diverse communities can we effectively undertake research that improves outcomes in our more fiery future.

Abstract:Background Fire is a multifaceted force. Fire activity and risk of fire incidence across US forested ecosystems have accelerated over the last two decades. At the same time, human land-use choices and climate change interacted with fire, in an era we are called to meet specific sustainability goals of reducing CO 2 emissions and protecting biodiversity, ecosystems, and their resources. To understand the development of the traits and functions of organisms, and the processes and drivers of natural and human-induced events that cause fire, it is essential to study the fire ecology in the context of human land-use history in the forested ecoregions of the USA. Results This book is a research synthesis of the fire ecology in the US forest ecosystems at the regional level. Two main pillars are analyzed across all ecoregions and forest types covered in the book, the drivers and linkages that form fire history and interactions initiated by recurring fire events, and the interdependence of fire with the forest ecosystem dynamics and humans. Conclusions The research, policy, and management tools available for managing fire as a disturbance and as prevention and mitigation treatment need cross-boundary revision. It is fundamental to realize the precise role of fire at present and to redefine the role of fire in the short and long term. This book is an invitation to change our perspective and methods towards these directions.

Abstract:While the fire constitutes a threat and provokes avoidance by the entire animal world, its control as lighting and maintenance is inseparable from the history of humankind. For 1% of the population that use is turned to harm, repeatedly and without objective reason, responding to the historical definition of pyromania. The profile of arsonists does not appear to be different from that of the general criminal population: alcohol abuse, nicotine, marijuana and antisocial personality do not make fire setters a special case. However positive fire experience lived in childhood, emotional avoidance and expertise in fire settings' control seems to be specific, as recidivism risk below that of the general criminal population.

Abstract:This research explores the complex interplay among (a) landscape and social memory, (b) the construction of place-identity, and (c) notions of responsibility sharing in hazard preparedness and response. Our aims are to (a) establish greater clarity about the gap between social responses to technologically driven risk management strategies favoured by governments and agencies within the context of Australian bushfire management policies and practices, and (b) provide insight into the practical implications of policies espousing greater community involvement in readiness for bushfire, and shared responsibility between communities and governments. Case study based ethnographic research involves communities in rural, peri-urban and remote Australia. We find that maintaining a sense of place-identity in the face of economic rationalist government-at-a-distance may be of greater urgency to communities than planning for possible bushfire threat. Community imperatives to retain control over local social and landscape memory and narratives may result in push-back against well-intentioned outsider agency interventions aimed at promoting greater community awareness and preparedness. Within the entanglement of landscape, remembering and everyday social practices – the taskscape – there is fluidity between individual place-identity and the ways social memory is (re)constructed to make sense of emergent events and support imagined community futures. We conclude that a consequence for land and fire management agencies is to recognise the importance of framing community engagement around the ways each community functions within and as part of its landscape, rather than a singular focus on potential bushfire impacts.

Abstract:With the intensification of the impact of human activities on the Earth’s systems, humankind has entered a new era in its history, the Anthropocene, which means that humankind has become the greatest threat to its survival and the Earth’s environment, and a major force for change in the Earth’s geological formations, however the consequences of human activity in the Anthropocene era were often uncontrolled and unintended, and so the Anthropocene also signaled the need for humans to take greater responsibility for the Earth. Cormac McCarthy’s novel The Road is mainly written through extreme weather, biological extinction, and ecological imbalance to show the climate disaster caused by human over-destruction of the earth’s ecology, to remind people to establish the “Anthropocene” thinking and take the road of sustainable development. McCarthy’s depiction of the desolate world of the end of time not only highlights his deep concern about the current state of human existence and ecological problems but also highlights the practical significance of literary works inquiring into the way of human survival.

Abstract:Firesetting behaviors present multifaceted challenges that intersect the realms of mental health, law, and societal welfare. While distinct in nature, firesetting, arson, and pyromania collectively embody a spectrum of behaviors that cause harm with profound implications for mental health and legal system. Firesetting is a behavior, arson is a criminal offense, and pyromania is a classified psychiatric diagnosis. Nevertheless, the underlying motivations for these behaviors in the context of psychiatric symptomatoloty remain poorly understood. Arson alone exacts a staggering financial toll in the United States, emphasizing the urgent need to understand the reason behind these acts. Within legal contexts, mental health professionals frequently encounter individuals exhibiting firesetting behaviors while consulting on legal cases. The strong correlation between firesetting behavior and mental disorders shows a dire need for extensive and detailed collaboration between psychiatric experts, legal practitioners, and fire services. Here, we describe a series of firesetting cases and their ties to the mental health and legal systems underscoring the imperative for integrated, multifaceted approaches to address this pressing societal concern.
