Abstract:The widespread decline of biodiversity due to increasing urban development raises the need to timely identify areas most relevant to the conservation of native species, particularly within cities where natural areas are extremely limited. Here, we assess the multiple role of local geomorphological features in shaping patterns and dynamics of plant diversity, with the aim of identifying conservation values and priorities in an urbanised area of Southern Italy. Based on recent and historical lists of vascular plants, we compared the floristic composition of different portions of the area by considering species' conservation value, ecological and biogeographical traits. We found that landscape remnants, accounting for 5% of the study area, harbour over 85% of the whole plant diversity and a considerable set of exclusive species. Results of Generalised Linear Mixed Models show an outstanding role of landscape remnants for the conservation of native, rare and specialised species. Based on the compositional similarities among sampled sites resulting from hierarchical clustering, these linear landscape elements also play a key role in maintaining the floristic continuity and potential connectivity throughout the urban landscape. By comparing current biodiversity patterns with data from the early XX century, we also show that the considered landscape elements are significantly more likely to host populations of declining native species, underlining their role as refugia against past and future extinctions. Taken together, our findings represent an effective framework to tackle the challenging conservation of nature in cities, namely providing a valuable approach for the identification of priority areas for the conservation of diversity within anthropogenic landscapes.

Abstract:Current solutions to global challenges place tension between global benefits and local impacts. The result is increasing opposition to implementation of beneficial climate policies. Prioritizing investment in projects with tangible local benefits that also contribute to global climate change can resolve this tension and make local communities' partners instead of antagonists to change; the approach advocated is a new take on "thinking globally, acting locally". This approach is a departure from the usual strategy of focusing resources on solutions perceived to have the largest potential global impact, without regards to local concerns. Reclamation of polluted mine sites by using fast growing bamboo to remove heavy metals provides a case study to show what is possible. Effective implementation of thinking globally while acting locally will require increased coordination between different types of researchers, new educational models, and greater stakeholder participation in problem identification and solution development.

Abstract:The poet's language can evoke strong emotions, in contrast with effective science writing, which consists of short sentences with single ideas embedded within strictly limited paragraphs of 10–15 lines. This description might be interpreted as a prescription for science writing formal verse, but it is not. However, there are those among us who are gifted in storytelling that bridges the gap between the public and science communities. This issue has produced a wide range of commentary on the intersection of biology and public awareness and the importance of language that makes this communication successful. Rogayan tells us about an important environmentalist influencer, Celine Murillo, in "Green-fluencer speaks: Mainstreaming Philippine biodiversity through social media" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae055), who is able to effectively engage the public on the importance of biodiversity through the use of local names in the people's first language. Rogayan's Letter was motivated by Fish and colleagues' earlier article in BioScience , "Language matters for biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae014), and who so eloquently comment in their response, "Lingua franca or lingua cultura? Understanding the language of biodiversity" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae076), that the rich and diverse culture of human language reveals the "often remarkable and rather imaginative ways in which biodiversity comes to be understood by people through language-based experience." Following this theme, in "The Pocosin's lesson" (https://doi.org/10.1093/biosci/biae078), Emanuel, in a Thinking of Biology contribution, provides an example of the importance of developing genuine relationships with people who have deep, multigenerational expertise about the places we work and the importance of employing humility as we seek to learn about those places. Euro-American colonization of the United States caused the devasting loss of important Indigenous knowledge, and for those of us who are not indigenous to the places where we work, we have an obligation to not add to the loss by creating false "knowledge."

Abstract:<span>One of the most discussed issues on the contemporary scene, when it comes to territory, cities and citizens is that of the revitalization of urban spaces through social innovation activities. These are projects designed to create a bottom-up network, that is, starting from the realities that are really active on the local territory and linked by a common goal, that of an active protection of such territories, making them "alive" and usable by citizens of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, without affecting the ecosystem balances. The project "Green days in the Park of Lama Balice" has had as general objective the dissemination of the culture of sustainability and the awareness of the population on the issues of environmental protection, on the relationship between human beings and nature, with particular attention to the waste cycle and to the opportunities offered by proper management and disposal with a view to reduction, recovery and recycling. These are based on ecological principles together with the analysis framework of natural elements, physical senses, psychological perceptions, socio-economic perspectives, process-risk, and associated aspects, as characteristic elements of Landsenses Ecology which includes, among other aspects, also those relating to risks, such as biological and socio-economic ones, during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. This can represent a response to the health emergency with the improvement of psychophysical and emotional well-being by providing sustainable well-being for communities and maintaining, improving and increasing the resilience of ecosystem services.</span>

Abstract:In a time of mass extinction and climate change, every plant in a design urban garden matters. For me, as a garden designer, that means using native plant in sync with local wildlife. The hope is that using plants wildlife recognize will, in some cases, help both fauna and flora adapt to changes. My designs are meant to bridge the wild prairie, most now gone, and the traditional aesthetic concerns of urban dwellers. As wildness is brought back into our lives through all five senses, we gain appreciation for other species and, in turn, may begin to advocate for them and their wellbeing -- as our wellbeing is tied to plants, birds, insects, spiders, and more.

Abstract:Studying historical rural landscapes beyond their archaeological and cultural significance, as has typically been addressed in previous research, is important in the context of current environmental challenges. Some historical rural landscapes, such as Roman land divisions, have persisted for more than 2000 years and may still contribute to sustainability goals. To assess this topic, the hydraulic and vegetation network of the centuriation northeast of Padua were studied, emphasising their multiple benefits. Their length, distribution, and evolution over time (2008–2022) were vectorised and measured using available digital terrain models and orthophotographs in a geographic information system (GIS). The results revealed a significant decline in the length of water ditches and hedgerows across almost all examined areas, despite their preservation being highlighted in regional and local spatial planning documents. These findings indicate the need for a better understanding of the local dynamics driving such trends and highlight the importance of adopting a more tailored approach to their planning. This study discusses the GIS metrics utilised and, in this way, contributes to landscape monitoring and restoration actions. Finally, a multifunctional approach to the sustainable planning of this area is proposed here—one that integrates the cultural archaeological heritage in question with environmental preservation and contemporary climate adaptation and mitigation strategies.

Abstract:With the ecological threat looming over the world, the push to expand green zones with minimal human presence is gaining momentum, especially in the Global South. In line with this worldwide tendency, the Kingdom of Cambodia has embarked on a long-term strategy for carbon neutrality, aiming to achieve zero emissions by 2050, making it the first in ASEAN to submit such a vision. Protecting the forest is the present-day motto. Beyond this mainstream rhetoric, this article delves into the survival realities of the indigenous people involved in Cambodia's conservation projects. The anthropological research intends to reveal the fate of the villages (human rights, access to land and natural resources, sovereignty) living in and around a conservation area. We examine the case of the transnational NGO Wildlife Conservation Society engaged in a Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) program in a territory traditionally inhabited by ethnic Bunong people. The findings provide significant insights, frequently neglected, into the challenges associated with the will to “save the forest”, with an extremely limited participation of the local population.

Abstract:This article applies the notion of existential threat to urban societies endangered by the unrestrained expansion of urbanised extractivist capitalism. It does so for purposes of urban activism and action‐oriented research, because of the sense of urgency this notion conveys. Conceptually drawing on Hardt and Negri’s theorisation of the anthropogenic foundations of extractivist capitalism, the article exposes how variegated processes of economic‐value extraction lead to de‐urbanising dynamics, particularly in urban areas located at the margin of global capitalism that are more exposed to its predatory mechanisms, such as Belgrade and Naples in the European South. Abstract:The Black Dirt Region in the State of New York has been well-known for the unique taste of its onions, which is attributed to the organic matter that weighs over 80% in the soil. In recent years, however, the rigid economic pattern restrains the development of this area. In the meantime, local agricultural production is more and more vulnerable to flooding. When this region is labeled as “highly productive of crops,” the persistent factors that have been shaping the black-dirt landscape are omitted. The other name of the place, “the Drowned Lands,” may better capture its entangled relationship with water. In this article, hydrogeological dynamics and human desire are regarded as the factors that sustain landscape continuity and stability. Based on the research on historical sedimentation in the Drowned Lands, this article attempts to delineate a local scenario of covert landscape evolution since the Last Glacial Maximum. The proposal initiates a composite pathway of ecological functions and touristic values in the agricultural region. Within a series of “landscape prompts,” a lesser-known tale of local geology and prehistoric culture is told. Through design interventions, alternative possibilities of rural landscape are tested, embedded meaning of the agricultural land becomes tangible, and a more adaptive human–land relationship is restored.

Abstract:Abstract Costa Rica’s environmental regime is world renowned, and since the mid-twentieth century, the country has protected its inestimable natural resources via land conservation expropriation. Through conservation Costa Rica ended the historical plague of deforestation, and its national parks and nature reserves buttress an ecotourism industry that is an important source of foreign revenue. But with every act of conservation, a human toll was also paid. As rural lands became protected areas, rural people lost access to places they depended on for survival. They hence became “victims” or, to some, “enemies” of conservation, and in nearly every setting, they resisted by carrying out land invasions; squatting; unauthorized ranching, farming, and mining; and even environmental banditry (as with the burning of La Casona in Santa Rosa National Park in 2001). Focusing on a handful of celebrated cases of land conservation, this analysis demonstrates how the creation of natural havens such as Corcovado National Park in 1975 displaced rural people and the various ways those people responded.
