Abstract:Since entering the ‘Millennium of the cities’ omnipresent rapid urbanization has caused dramatic changes to ecosystem functions and generated huge ecological risks across city catchments. An understanding of how multiple ecosystem services are associated across complex social-ecological systems is required for urban sustainability. However, few studies have explored how the trade-offs and synergies of ecosystem service response to the traits of urbanization processes such as the variation of undeveloped-developed continuum. In this study, we took the Yangtze River Delta in China, a typical megapolis, as the case study area and quantified seven ecosystem services at a 10 km x 10 km spatial scale. We presented the spatial distribution and interactions of these services and identified whether they coexist in the form of specific cluster types. We found positive spatial autocorrelations across the study site. A significant tendency of trade-offs was detected between regulating and agricultural provisioning services, and we also spotted the possibility of both trade-offs and synergies that regulating and (different) cultural services were able to provide. Our results identified four different cluster types, and the cluster distributions are strongly associated with the urbanization levels—a tendency for urbanizing areas to witness the function shift in the certain order of ‘ecology – provision – multifunction – accessibility’. This provides a deeper understanding of the interactions among multiple ecosystem services and how they were determined by the ongoing social-ecological influences. The close connection between urbanization processes and ecosystems interact across developing and developed areas should be taken into consideration for future landscape planning.

Abstract:Over the last decades, the environmental burden borne by natural ecosystems to sustain life in urban areas has considerably increased. For this reason, the network of interconnected green areas and features, referred to as Urban Green Infrastructure, is increasingly being promoted as a valuable means to enhance the life quality of city dwellers by providing Ecosystem Services. We present a spatial analysis of Ecosystem Services provision and synergies/trade-offs along the urban–rural gradient for the following Italian coastal Metropolitan cities: Genoa, Rome, Bari, Naples, Cagliari, Reggio Calabria and Palermo. We focused our attention on three macro classes of human-induced environmental pressures that are particularly critical to the quality of life in urban contexts, namely air pollution, Urban Heat Island effect, and alteration of the water cycle. We found that all of the selected Ecosystem Services, besides a few exceptions, are provided as a bundle, which means they appear together repeatedly, forming an association. On average, the Ecosystem Services provision grows at comparable paces moving from the inner urban core towards the peri-urban and rural areas. As a consequence, most densely urbanized areas were found to be Ecosystem Services coldspots compared to peri-urban and rural areas.

Urban Green Development and Resilient Cities: A First Insight into Urban Forest Planning in Italy

Abstract:The research proposes an application of a modification of the 3–30–300 rule to identify areas that require Urban Forestry implementation in small and medium-sized Roman and/or medieval urban areas. The selected case study is that of Asti in Piedmont, Italy. An open source, cross-platform desktop geographic information system is used to process geospatial datasets via qualitative analyses of electoral sections (or wards). An analysis of the number and distribution of trees around each building is performed, in addition to the calculation of tree canopy cover and distance between buildings and green spaces. Findings reveal that 64 out of 70 wards have an average of at least three trees per building and sufficient green areas of at least 0.5 hectares within 300 m of the buildings. Additionally, the tree canopy cover ranges from approximately 0.6% (lowest) to about 55% (highest) for the electoral sections. Lastly, findings suggest that the highly built-up urban fabric in these areas may significantly affect the availability and quality of green spaces. In conclusion, the case study proves the benefits of applying the 3–30–300 rule to small and medium-sized urban areas using an integrated assessment approach based on nature-based solutions and ecosystem services.

Abstract:Urban forests are crucial components of the urban ecosystem, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance, mitigating the urban heat island effect, and enhancing air quality, etc.. Research into urban forest ecosystem services and multifunctionality is of significant importance for effectively managing and optimizing urban ecosystems, thus contributing to sustainable urban development. This work systematically examined various ecosystem services provided by urban forests, encompassing regulatory, supportive, provisioning, cultural, and health-promoting services. It provided a comprehensive review of research progress and paradigms regarding the multifunctionality of urban forest ecosystems, anticipates future research directions, and underscored the necessity of enhancing attention to the three-dimensional morphology of urban forests in regulating their ecological functions. Additionally, it emphasized the importance of quantitatively analyzing urban forests' contribution to ecosystem multifunctionality and optimizing urban forest patterns through multi-objective synergistic techniques. Furthermore, this study elucidated the cascading effects and mechanisms of urban forest pattern-process-function-service relationships, proposing strategies for multi-objective coordinated development of urban forest patterns and offering scientific support and practical guidance for the efficient, stable, and sustainable management of urban forests.

The Urban Forest and Ecosystem Services: Impacts on Urban Water, Heat, and Pollution Cycles at the Tree, Street, and City Scale

Abstract:Many environmental challenges are exacerbated within the urban landscape, such as stormwater runoff and flood risk, chemical and particulate pollution of urban air, soil and water, the urban heat island, and summer heat waves. Urban trees, and the urban forest as a whole, can be managed to have an impact on the urban water, heat, carbon and pollution cycles. However, there is an increasing need for empirical evidence as to the magnitude of the impacts, both beneficial and adverse, that urban trees can provide and the role that climatic region and built landscape circumstance play in modifying those impacts. This special section presents new research that advances our knowledge of the ecological and environmental services provided by the urban forest. The 14 studies included provide a global perspective on the role of trees in towns and cities from five continents. Some studies provide evidence for the cooling benefit of the local microclimate in urban green space with and without trees. Other studies focus solely on the cooling benefit of urban tree transpiration at a mesoscale or on cooling from canopy shade at a street and pedestrian scale. Other studies are concerned with tree species differences in canopy interception of rainfall, water uptake from biofilter systems, and water quality improvements through nutrient uptake from stormwater runoff. Research reported here also considers both the positive and the negative impacts of trees on air quality, through the role of trees in removing air pollutants such as ozone as well as in releasing potentially harmful volatile organic compounds and allergenic particulates. A transdisciplinary framework to support future urban forest research is proposed to better understand and communicate the role of urban trees in urban biogeochemical cycles that are highly disturbed, highly managed, and of paramount importance to human health and well-being.
The Contribution of Ornamental Plants to Urban Ecosystem Services

Abstract:Urban areas can be differently anthropized; often, high-density populations lead to higher amounts of pollution. Nowadays, ornamental plants can represent important living components of urban areas, and if appropriate species are used, they can provide important ecosystem services. The relationships between green infrastructures and ecosystem services have been recognized for a long time, but the role of ornamental plant species has not been studied as much. In this frame, the different ecosystem services of ornamental plants, i.e., provisioning (e.g., food, air, and water cleaning), regulating (e.g., rain water, climate, nutrient recycling, pollination, and the formation of fertile soils), and cultural (e.g., recreation opportunities or the inspiration we draw from nature) will be critically analyzed to select the most suitable ornamental plant species able to assure the better performance. The action mechanisms will also be analyzed and discussed to individuate the best ideotypes of plant species able to better assure water purification, air quality, space for recreation, climate mitigation and adaptation, human wellbeing, and health. This information is suitable to ensure that the protection, restoration, creation, and enhancement of green infrastructure become integral parts of urban spatial planning and territorial development.

Abstract:There is an urgent need for holistic tools to assess the health impacts of climate change mitigation and adaptation policies relating to increasing public green spaces. Urban vegetation provides numerous ecosystem services on a local scale and is therefore a potential adaptation strategy that can be used in an era of global warming to offset the increasing impacts of human activity on urban environments. In this study, we propose a set of urban green ecological metrics that can be used to evaluate urban green ecosystem services. The metrics were derived from two complementary surveys: a traditional remote sensing survey of multispectral images and Laser Imaging Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, and a survey using proximate sensing through images made available by the Google Street View database. In accordance with previous studies, two classes of metrics were calculated: greenery at lower and higher elevations than building facades. In the last phase of the work, the metrics were applied to city blocks, and a spatially constrained clustering methodology was employed. Homogeneous areas were identified in relation to the urban greenery characteristics. The proposed methodology represents the development of a geographic information system that can be used by public administrators and urban green designers to create and maintain urban public forests.

Abstract:This contribution briefly reflects on the evolution of nature in the city, according to the existing literature on landscape in the Italian urban planning tradition. New approaches to the urban nature conservation strongly depend on the regulations that planning can give in terms of local ecosystem services, absorption of pollutants in the atmosphere, noise reduction and allocation of places for recreation. The conservation of nature in the city is also part of the global effort to stop the biodiversity decline. In fact, landscape, the urban one, has the ability to introduce the social dimension and is therefore functional to the implementation of urban nature conservation frameworks. Current urbanizations, which are closest to natural areas, often demonstrate at all scales a lack of social and ecological relationships: the risk is a conceptual and physical insularization, which reduces public support to nature conservation, causes a further loss of biodiversity and does not promote the generation of new ecosystem services. One of the main future challenges will therefore be to convert the existing conservation strategies and introduce specific regulations in planning for natural areas that may be better integrated with the urban context: this contribution discusses the fact that the landscape can be the element that may drive this integration.

Abstract:As rates of urbanization and climatic change soar, decision-makers are increasingly challenged to provide innovative solutions that simultaneously address climate-change impacts and risks and inclusively ensure quality of life for urban residents. Cities have turned to nature-based solutions to help address these challenges. Nature-based solutions, through the provision of ecosystem services, can yield numerous benefits for people and address multiple challenges simultaneously. Yet, efforts to mainstream nature-based solutions are impaired by the complexity of the interacting social, ecological, and technological dimensions of urban systems. This complexity must be understood and managed to ensure ecosystem-service provisioning is effective, equitable, and resilient. Here, we provide a social-ecological-technological system (SETS) framework that builds on decades of urban ecosystem services research to better understand four core challenges associated with urban nature-based solutions: multi-functionality, systemic valuation, scale mismatch of ecosystem services, and inequity and injustice. The framework illustrates the importance of coordinating natural, technological, and socio-economic systems when designing, planning, and managing urban nature-based solutions to enable optimal social-ecological outcomes.
The Necessity of Maintaining the Resilience of Peri-Urban Forests to Secure Environmental and Ecological Balance: A Case Study of Forest Stands Located on the Romanian Sector of the Pannonian Plain

Abstract:Climate change's negative effects, such as rising global temperatures and the disruption of global ecological ecosystems as a direct effect of rising carbon emissions in the atmosphere, are a significant concern for human health, communities, and ecosystems. The condition and presence of forest ecosystems, especially those in peri-urban areas, play an essential role in mitigating the negative effects of climate change on society. They provide direct benefits to the residents of large cities and their surrounding areas, and they must be managed sustainably to protect all their component ecosystems. This research was carried out in the forests of Lunca Muresului Natural Park and Bazos Arboretum, located in the Romanian sector of the Pannonian Plain, near urban agglomerations. The results showed high variability in the stands. Using the height-to-diameter ratio indicator concerning dbh and species, a strong Pearson correlation was registered (between 0.45 and 0.82). These values indicate the high stability of these stands, providing positive human–nature interactions such as recreational or outdoor activities (and a complementary yet indirect use value through attractive landscape views). Protecting these ecosystems offers a so-called insurance policy for the next generations from a climate change standpoint.

Abstract:Thanks to many initiatives, such as the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MEA), The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) and EU target for 2020 on Biodiversity, the topic of ecosystem services has received even more attention both in the academic and political debate. On the contrary, the research on urban ecosystems and urban ecosystem services has yet been relatively modest compared to other ecosystems, like wetlands or forests. However, the relevance of topic requires more efforts in this field also because, in most cases, urban ecosystem services have been studied individually, without considering their role in governance and planning processes. In this context, the present paper has the aim at giving a perspective of the state of the art of the research on urban ecosystem services with a focus on the different definitions and classifications emerging from the literature, as well as of examples of indicators for their valuation. The work highlights the gaps in the research to support the definition of future research perspectives and analysis, in particular for the adoption of valuation approaches able to guide the decision-making process in urban areas and for ensuring the consideration of urban ecosystem services in spatial planning policies and actions.
Urban soil ecosystem services: contributing to sustainable urban development

Abstract:Soil in urban areas has largely been left out of traditional soil research, however, there is now a growing interest in its importance due to the key role that cities will play in a more sustainable future. Soil provides vital ecosystem services, and these are becoming more pertinent for cities as the population of urban areas continues to grow. Services such as flood regulation, urban food growing, urban heat island mitigation and carbon storage, as well as cultural and recreational services, are unpinned by the healthy functioning of soils.The role of urban soil in providing ecosystem services in urban areas is understudied, and the complexities of understanding and quantifying soil ecosystem services has yet to be translated to the varied and highly heterogeneous context of cities. In this work, we will review the literature on soil ecosystem services in cities and present a state-of-the-art picture of current knowledge.We will discuss the variation of urban soils, their treatment and management in urban areas, and the associated difficulty in investigating and classifying them. The trends of urban soil ecosystem services research will be presented, considering which services have been most commonly studied across supporting, provisioning, regulating and cultural categories; and in which countries. A co-occurrence analysis of key terms in the literature will also be presented, highlighting further patterns and gaps in knowledge. This will also lead to a discussion on the key drivers behind the soil threats in urban areas, such as soil compaction, sealing with impervious surfaces and contamination.The most studied services will be investigated further to allow a more detailed discussion into what we know about these services, and the impacts of urbanisation on their provision. This presentation will bring together the growing body of work on this relatively new research area, will identify gaps in our knowledge, and will highlight the impacts of urbanisation for urban soils. This will inform the way we treat and manage soil in urban areas, helping to optimise the provision of urban soil ecosystem services and contributing to more sustainable urban development for the future.

Abstract:The traditional rural–urban compact, now almost ten thousand years old, whereby the countryside sent products and people to the city in exchange for the city's products, services and governance is not working anymore. The rural population is increasingly marginalized and natural environments are increasingly destroyed. A new rural–urban compact needs to arise where cities acknowledge and pay for environmental sustainability. In this new rural–urban compact there would be more employment opportunities and more income coming to the rural areas, and the cities would benefit from a sustainable supply of rural products and ecosystem services provided by restored rural environments. This paper describes why this is important and provides several ideas on how to implement programs.

Abstract:The world's cities must grow to accommodate an increasing urban population, and achieving this with minimal impact on ecosystem structures and functions is a major challenge. At opposite ends of a possible development spectrum are “land sharing” – extensive sprawling urbanization where built land and natural space are interspersed – and “land sparing” – intensive and extremely compact urbanization alongside separate, large, contiguous green space. Using case studies across urbanization gradients, we demonstrate that land sparing is crucial for sustaining a majority of ecosystem services. Conversely, some land sharing may also be necessary to ensure that people benefit from urban green space. Future urban development should carefully consider green space provision, to maximize the services provided by urban ecosystems. This can be achieved by optimizing distributions of development intensity across cities by means of top‐down, policy‐led approaches.

Abstract:As human living environments face increasing challenges with resilience, the concept of nature-based solutions (NBS) was proposed in recent years as a way to promote sustainable living in urban environments. Urban forests and trees play important roles in urban ecosystems, while their potential as an NBS is promising. A bibliometric analysis was first conducted to explore the research pattern of NBS in urban environments. Studies of urban forest and tree-based green infrastructure in NBS research were further investigated using a systematic literature review method. The initial studies on NBS have increased since 2015 with 493 documents published from 142 sources in over 70 countries and regions. Keyword analysis showed green infrastructure had a rather high frequency of utility and received considerable attention. As for urban forests as nature-based solutions (UF-NBS) research, the most prominent study approaches used at different scales and the main benefits and typologies of urban forest studied in the articles were identified. UF-NBS research is still relatively scarce at present. Despite the role of urban forest and trees in addressing environmental challenges being well recognized, UF-NBS studies still need to be conducted in a more comprehensive context, taking social and economic aspects into account.

Abstract:This article summarizes a study that examined the research on urban tree diversity from 2000 to 2022. The study used bibliometric analysis to explore trends, patterns, and impacts of research activities in this field. The findings indicate that urban tree diversity research has been expanding, with a few countries, institutions, and researchers making significant contributions. The study also identifies research hotspots and frontiers, such as modeling future species distributions and integrating ecological science with social engagement, to guide future studies and improve the management of urban forests. Ecosystem services offered by urban forests must be proactively managed to remain diverse and sustainable. Recent research findings deserve a systematic synthesis to elucidate inherent knowledge structures and dynamics. This study focused on the urban tree diversity theme from 2000 to 2022. Web of Science Core Collection database provided bibliometric details on academic publications. The data‐driven quantitative analysis explored research quantities, emphasis, trends, patterns, linkages, and impacts by countries, institutions, authors, journals, and citations. Publications and research topics have expanded continually, with accelerated growth in recent years. Research activities, outputs and interactions demonstrated conspicuous spatial clustering. A few countries, institutions and researchers generated a notable proportion of publications. Their scholarly contributions were visualized in knowledge graphs as complex networks of nodes and inter‐node links. Keyword analysis generated a network to indicate research hotspots and frontiers to steer and prioritize future studies. Recent findings affirmed that cities can harbor substantial tree diversity due to enhanced habitat heterogeneity and successful species adaptation. Aligning tree traits with environmental conditions and management objectives can improve benefits. Urbanization can filter tree traits to shape community assemblages through stressors: habitat degradation, fragmentation and loss, in conjunction with pollution, climate change, and introduced species. Diversity preservation strategies include protecting remnant natural vegetation, connecting green spaces, and restoring complex canopy geometry and biomass structure. The emerging frontiers are marked by modeling future species distributions, leveraging technologies like remote sensing, linking ecology with human values, and committing to community‐based stewardship. Management can be upgraded by interdisciplinary perspectives integrating ecological science and social engagement. The findings highlight the need for biodiversity enrichment anchored by native species, trait‐matched assemblages, adaptive policies, and community participation to create livable‐green cities. This review synthesizes key advances in urban tree ecology and biodiversity research to inform the planning and stewardship of resilient urban forests.

Abstract:A tool for urban forest Ecosystem services (ES) and disservices (ED) assessment has been developed to visualize (i) overall ES and ED value, (ii) ES–ED trade-off and (iii) explore principal influences in ES and ED provision. The Real Bosco di Capodimonte (RBC) (Naples, Southern Italy) has been chosen as a case study. ES and ED linked to urban forest plant cover were: biodiversity, carbon storage, gross and net carbon sequestration, lessen runoff, oxygen production, air pollution removal, UV effects reduction, pollen-related allergenicity risk, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions. A phytosociological survey was conducted and biodiversity value was evaluated. ES and ED were assessed by i-Tree Eco model and Index of Urban Green Zones Allergenicity (I UGZA ). Results showed that 441 different plant species occur in the RBC and the most represented genera are Quercus and Trifolium , while the largest family was Asteraceae. Carbon storage and pollution removal were highest in natural forest, while remaining ES were greater in managed forest areas. Highest value for VOCs emission and allergenicity were assigned to managed and natural forest, respectively. Managed forest scored the highest ES–ED value, while managed grassland scored the lowest. Results highlighted the greater influence of plant cover structure in overall ES and ED provision levels, and management influence considering the same type of plant cover. The model could be a valuable tool for ES and ED effective management generally applicable in urban forests.

Abstract:Many cities aim to increase urban forest cover to benefit residents through the provision of ecosystem services and to promote biodiversity. As a complement to traditional forest plantings, we address opportunities associated with “emerging urban forests” (i.e., spontaneously developing forests in cities) for urban biodiversity conservation. We quantified the area of successional forests and analyzed the species richness of native and alien plants and of invertebrates (carabid beetles, spiders) in emerging forests dominated by alien or native trees, including Robinia pseudoacacia, Acer platanoides, and Betula pendula. Emerging urban forests were revealed as shared habitats of native and alien species. Native species richness was not profoundly affected by the alien (co-)dominance of the canopy. Instead, native and alien plant species richnesses were positively related. Numbers of endangered plants and invertebrates did not differ between native- and alien-dominated forest patches. Patterns of tree regeneration indicate different successional trajectories for novel forest types. We conclude that these forests (i) provide habitats for native and alien species, including some endangered species, (ii) allow city dwellers to experience wild urban nature, and (iii) support arguments for adapting forests to dynamic urban environments. Integrating emerging urban forests into the urban green infrastructure is a promising pathway to sustainable cities and can complement traditional restoration or greening approaches.

Abstract:The provision of ecosystem services is a prominent rationale for urban greening, and there is a prevailing mantra that 'trees are good'. However, understanding how urban trees contribute to sustainability must also consider disservices. In this perspective article, we discuss recent research on ecosystem disservices of urban trees, including infrastructure conflicts, health and safety impacts, aesthetic issues, and environmentally detrimental consequences, as well as management costs related to ecological disturbances and risk management. We also discuss tradeoffs regarding species selection and local conservation concerns, as well as the central role of human perception in the interpretation of ecosystem services and disservices, particularly the uncritical assertion that 'everybody loves trees'. Urban forestry decision-making that fails to account for disservices can have unintended negative consequences for communities. Further research is needed regarding life cycle assessments, stakeholder decision-making, return-on-investment, and framings of services and disservices in urban forestry.
