Abstract:Photon-counting laser ranging has attracted a lot of research interest for its application in the altimeter. In this letter, we report a large scale multi-beam photon-counting laser imaging system by using 100 laser beams in linear array as the light source. Taking advantage of a 100-channel low-noise high-efficiency single-photon detector, the three-dimensional image of remote targets could be constructed rapidly according to the time-of-flight measurement. This system provides a solution for a high-speed, high-resolution, low energy-consumption pushbroom airborne or spaceborne laser altimeter.

Abstract:We present the results of using a photon-counting full-waveform lidar to obtain detailed target information with high accuracy. The parameters of the waveforms (i.e., vertical structure, peak position, peak amplitude, peak width and backscatter cross section) are derived with a high resolution limit of 31 mm to establish the vertical structure and scattering properties of targets, which contribute to the recognition and classification of various scatterers. The photon-counting full-waveform lidar has higher resolution than linear-mode full-waveform lidar, and it can obtain more specific target information compared to photon-counting discrete-point lidar, which can provide a potential alternative technique for tomographic surveying and mapping .

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on a Si 3 N 4 switching array. Two-dimensional beam steering with a 14.3°×9.9° field of view and FMCW ranging operation at a distance of 7.4 m are achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:Flash LiDAR is a photoelectric system that can acquire a 3D image by emitting a diffuse pulsed laser beam, and hence is suitable for both autopilot and spacecraft flight control. Achieving long-range and high-speed, especially in outdoor applications with strong solar background illumination, are challenging requirements. In this paper, a set of laser imaging prototype based on 2×6 VCSEL array and 32×32 MPPC array image sensor is developed, the range calibration is completed, and relevant experimental research is carried out. The frame rate of the system can reach 10kHz, the detection probability of 120m range can reach 86.23%, and the maximum walk error is about 0.6m under different reflectivity. The 3D imaging of the vehicle can be realized at about 70m, the horizontal spatial resolution is less than 5cm, and the ranging precision after ten shots average is within 10cm by calculating the centroid of a histogram. The detection probability can be improved by using the time-gating method. After multiple measurements, a 120m "laser imaging through window" can be realized in sunlight. This LiDAR system has the advantages of small volume, light weight and fast detection speed.

Abstract:A time-multiplexing technique is proposed and demonstrated for single-photon imaging lidar, utilizing a large-area single-pixel single-photon detector to simultaneously detect the multi-pixel echoes. In this time-division multiplexing lidar, the echo signals from different pixels of the fiber array are delayed through fibers of varying lengths, merged into a fiber bundle, and then sequentially detected by the large-area single-pixel detector. In the experimental demonstration, a two-detector system capable of imaging 122 pixels using single-photon imaging lidar was showcased in three-dimensional imaging. Furthermore, the spectral broadening caused by multimode fiber dispersion was analyzed. Imaging of four different targets at a distance of 80 m was experimentally validated. This time-multiplexing technique can greatly reduce the number of single-photon detectors required in imaging lidar systems, making it suitable for low-cost lidar applications.

Abstract:We demonstrate a high-speed photon-counting laser ranging system with laser pulses of multiple repetition rates to extend the unambiguous range. In the experiment, the laser pulses of three different repetition rates around 10 MHz were employed to enlarge the maximum unambiguous range from 15 m to 165 km. Moreover, the range of distances was increased as well, enabling the measurement on different targets of large separation distance with high depth resolution. An outdoor photon-counting laser ranging up to 21 km was realized with high repetition rate, which is beneficial for the airborne and satellite-based topographic mapping.

Abstract:Photon counting lidar is a high-sensitivity laser active imaging method. It can obtain more three-dimensional point cloud data under the same size, weight and power consumption. Through the use of photon counting lidar and image fusion process, the electro-optical system, such as visible light and infrared camera, could generate grayscale images and videos with distance, position and other information of the targets. In this paper, a Fusion Imaging System with Visible Light Camera and Photon Counting Lidar was designed. Visible light image and high-resolution photon counting threedimensional point clouds could be obtained by the system. Fiber array coupled Geiger-APDs were used as the single photon detectors in the system to acquire three-dimensional information with two-dimensional scanner. A CMOS camera was used to acquire gray visible light image in the system. The time-correlated single photon counting (TCSPC) filter algorithm was used to process the single photon points in order to filter the noise signals and extract valid signals. The fusion processing algorithm of the imaging system was designed by using the direct linear transformation algorithm. The performance of the system was verified through experiments. The results show that the three-dimensional imaging range exceeds 1000m under the day light condition. The ranging accuracy of the system is 0.083m. Pixel-level fusion of visible light image and three-dimensional image could be realized at 1024×768 resolution, which effectively improves the detection and recognition capabilities of the system.

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (lidar) offers single-photon sensitivity and picosecond timing resolution, which is desirable for high-precision three-dimensional (3D) imaging over long distances. Despite important progress, further extending the imaging range presents enormous challenges because only a few echo photons return and are mixed with strong noise. Here, we tackled these challenges by constructing a high-efficiency, low-noise coaxial single-photon lidar system and developing a long-range-tailored computational algorithm that provides high photon efficiency and good noise tolerance. Using this technique, we experimentally demonstrated active single-photon 3D imaging at a distance of up to 45 km in an urban environment, with a low return-signal level of ～1 photon per pixel. Our system is feasible for imaging at a few hundreds of kilometers by refining the setup, and thus represents a step towards low-power and high-resolution lidar over extra-long ranges.

Abstract:We demonstrate a hybrid solid-state beam scanner based on 32-channel silicon nitride optical switch with the assistance of transmission blazed grating. The optical switch exhibits rather low power consumption of 7.2 mW/π. Besides, end-fire antennas offer high optical efficiency with less reflection. Non-mechanical two-dimensional beam steering with range of 14.32° × 9.94° and beam divergence of <0.1° is achieved by wavelength tuning and onchip optical path switching. The proposed system eliminates complex control and time-consuming array phase calibration, providing a flexible, scalable and effective solution for all solid-state coaxial light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology.

Abstract:Laser ranging based on a single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), offering single-photon level high sensitivity, has been widely adopted in light detection and ranging (lidar) systems for long-distance ranging and imaging applications. Count detection through multiple pulses is commonly used when considering the existence of dark counting and strong background counting during the daytime, which improves the signal-to-noise ratio but at the expense of low detection speed. Here, we report a novel coded-pulse-bunch-laser-based single-photon lidar system, which aims to improve the ranging speed greatly and to expand the unambiguous distance to several kilometers. The schematic principle and construction of the lidar system, as well as the encoding method, are introduced. The time-of-flight (TOF) ranging information is extracted through real-time correlation between the transmitted pulse-bunch patterns and the received echo signals in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). A daytime ranging experiment is demonstrated on a non-cooperative mountain target that is 5.4 km away. The method will be of great potential in fast three-dimension (3D) single-photon lidar imaging application for its relatively high data refreshing rate and large unambiguous distance.

Abstract:We demonstrate a photon counting laser ranging experiment with a four-channel single-photon detector (SPD). The multi-channel SPD improve the counting rate more than 4×107 cps, which makes possible for the distance measurement performed even in daylight. However, the time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) technique cannot distill the signal easily while the fast moving targets are submersed in the strong background. We propose a dynamic TCSPC method for fast moving targets measurement by varying coincidence window in real time. In the experiment, we prove that targets with velocity of 5 km/s can be detected according to the method, while the echo rate is 20% with the background counts of more than 1.2×107 cps.

Single photon imaging based on a photon driven sparse sampling

Abstract:Single photon three-dimensional (3D) imager can capture 3D profile details and see through obscuring objects with high sensitivity, making it promising in sensing and imaging applications. The key capabilities of such 3D imager lie on its depth resolution and multi-return discrimination. For conventional pulsed single photon lidar, these capabilities are limited by transmitter bandwidth and receiver bandwidth simultaneously. A single photon imager is proposed and experimentally demonstrated to implement time-resolved and multi-return imaging. Time-to-frequency conversion is performed to achieve millimetric depth resolution. Experimental results show that the depth resolution is better than 4.5 mm, even though time jitter of the SPAD reaches 1 ns and time resolution of the TCSPC module reaches 10 ns. Furthermore, photon driven sparse sampling mechanism allows us to discriminate multiple near surfaces, no longer limited by the receiver bandwidth. The simplicity of the system hardware enables low-cost and compact 3D imaging.

Abstract:Ultrafast diode laser and photon-counting techniques were united to solve the trade-off between the dynamic range and high precision in the time of flight (TOF) laser ranging. Based on the direct time of flight (D-TOF) laser ranging method, we developed a wide dynamic laser ranging system. The peak power of the emission laser can reach 70 W, the width of pulsed laser is less than 2 ns, and the repetition rate can reach 500 kHz. The experimental results show that the precision is 7.5 mm when the echo signal is saturated. The maximum range can reach kilometer level, the accuracy is within 30 cm, and the repetition rate of measurement can reach 100 kHz. The system has the advantages of small size, low cost, fast detection speed, and high accuracy, which can be used in the fields of dynamic target measurement and high-speed environment perception.

Abstract:Single-photon light detection and ranging (LiDAR) has emerged as a strong candidate technology for active imaging applications. Benefiting from the single-photon sensitivity in detection, long-range active imaging can be realized with a low-power laser and a small-aperture transceiver. However, existing kilometer-range active imagers are bulky and have a long data acquisition time. Here we present a compact co-axial single-photon LiDAR system for kilometer-range 3D imaging. A fiber-based transceiver with a 2.5 cm effective aperture was employed to realize a robust and compact architecture, while a tailored temporal filtering approach guaranteed the high signal-to-noise level. Moreover, a micro-electro-mechanical system scanning mirror was adopted to achieve fast beam scanning. In experiment, high-resolution 3D images of different targets up to 12.8 km were acquired to demonstrate the long-range imaging capability. Furthermore, it exhibits the ability to achieve dynamic imaging at five frames per second over a distance of ∼1km. The results indicate potential in a variety of applications such as remote sensing and long-range target detection.

Abstract:Time-of-flight (TOF) Lidar is widely used in capturing three-dimensional (3D) structure and reflectivity information. For using Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode (Gm-APD) and the technique time correlated single photon counting (TCSPC), a direct-detection 3D imaging lidar has high sensitivity in low-light-level (LLL) scene. Traditional method needs long fixed dwell time to collect tens of thousands of photons to find accurate range and mitigate Poisson noise at each pixel. We present a method that acquires accurate depth and intensity images using a small amount of detected echo photons and having quantitative analysis to estimate whether results are in the confidence interval. Based on prior knowledge that the echo signal is in the shape of emitted laser, we use one or two orders of magnitude back-reflected photons less than traditional method, fitting a curve of laser-return pulse by nonlinear least-squares fitting in order to obtain the range. The condition of moving to next pixel in our method is acquiring a fixed number of back-reflected photons, instead of sampling for a fixed time. This adaptive jump condition is able to speed up the scanning without more distortion. The results are analyzed with chi-square test to determine if the curve we fit has enough credibility. This quantitative analysis provides an important judgment condition for our method of fitting curve to recover the depth image. Experimental results demonstrate that our method is able to obtain the millimeter accuracy depth image in the confidence interval using hundreds of photons and increases photon-efficiency more than 10-fold over traditional method. Thus our method will be useful in LLL scene, such as military reconnaissance and remote sensing.

Abstract:Long-range active imaging has widespread applications in remote sensing and target recognition. Single-photon light detection and ranging (lidar) has been shown to have high sensitivity and temporal resolution. On the application front, however, the operating range of practical single-photon lidar systems is limited to about tens of kilometers over the Earth's atmosphere, mainly due to the weak echo signal mixed with high background noise. Here, we present a compact coaxial single-photon lidar system capable of realizing 3D imaging at up to 201.5 km. It is achieved by using high-efficiency optical devices for collection and detection, and what we believe is a new noise-suppression technique that is efficient for long-range applications. We show that photon-efficient computational algorithms enable accurate 3D imaging over hundreds of kilometers with as few as 0.44 signal photons per pixel. The results represent a significant step toward practical, low-power lidar over extra-long ranges.

Abstract:The availability of compact, low-cost, and high-speed MEMS-based spatial light modulators has generated widespread interest in alternative sampling strategies for imaging systems utilizing single-pixel detectors. The development of compressed sensing schemes for real-time computational imaging may have promising commercial applications for high-performance detectors, where the availability of focal plane arrays is expensive or otherwise limited. We discuss the research and development of a prototype light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system via direct time of flight, which utilizes a single high-sensitivity photon-counting detector and fast-timing electronics to recover millimeter accuracy three-dimensional images in real time. The development of low-cost real time computational LiDAR systems could have importance for applications in security, defense, and autonomous vehicles.
