Abstract:This paper surveys an assortment of theoretical models, all bearing on the question of population stability in multi-species communities. Overall, the review is directed at the field and laboratory ecologist, and aims to be interpretive and non-mathematical. The main conclusion, derived from several independent lines of argument, is that, in general multi-species mathematical models, increased complexity tends to diminish rather than enhance stability. Although stability and complexity may go together in the real world, such stability must be the result of quite special strategies, and is not a mathematical consequence of complexity per se. Various minor points are also raised, among them being: the occurrence of stable" limit cycle" oscillations; the role played by timedelays in feedback mechanisms, and the way that addition of extra trophic levels can stabilise them; the relation between stability within one trophic level and total web stability; why strong predator-prey links are liable to be more common in Nature than strong symbiotic links.

Abstract:We discuss deductions that can be made as to the stability of multispecies communities, knowing only the structure of the food web, i.e., knowing only the signs of the elements in the interation matrix. Systems which are stable in these circumstances are called qualitatively stable and have been treated in economic and other contexts. The discussion touches upon general aspects of the relation between complexity and stability in multispecies systems, and in particular suggests that on stability grounds predator—prey bonds should be more common than mutualistic ones. This result is not intuitively obvious, but is a feature of many real—world ecosystems.

Abstract:Identifying stable coexistence in empirical systems is notoriously difficult. Here, we show how spatiotemporal structure and complex system dynamics can confound two commonly used stability metrics in empirical contexts: response to perturbation and invasion rate when rare. We use these metrics to characterize stable coexistence across a range of spatial and temporal scales for five simulated models in which the ability of species to coexist in the long term is known a priori and for an empirical old field successional time series. We term the resulting multivariate distribution of metrics a "stability fingerprint." In accordance with a wide range of classic and recent studies, our results demonstrate that no combination of empirically tractable metrics or measurements is guaranteed to "correctly" characterize coexistence. However, we also find that heuristic information from the stability fingerprint can be used to broadly characterize dynamic behavior and identify circumstances under which particular combinations of species are likely to persist. Moreover, stability fingerprints appear to be particularly well suited for matching potential theoretical models to observed dynamics. These findings suggest that it may be prudent to shift the focus of empirical stability analysis away from quantifying single measures of stability and toward more heuristic, multivariate characterizations of community dynamics.

Abstract:We often use simple models to talk about regime shifts and alternative stable states in nature. But how does multistability really look like in complex systems? We find that high‐dimensional models with random interactions can unfold up to four different multistability regimes. More importantly, each regime shows the same fingerprints across biological systems, suggesting a general taxonomy. Natural systems are built from multiple interconnected units, making their dynamics, functioning and fragility notoriously hard to predict. A fragility scenario of particular relevance concerns so‐called regime shifts: abrupt transitions from healthy to degraded ecosystem states. An explanation for these shifts is that they arise as transitions between alternative stable states, a process that is well‐understood in few‐species models. However, how multistability upscales with system complexity remains a debated question. Here, we identify that four different multistability regimes generically emerge in models of species‐rich communities and other archetypical complex biological systems assuming random interactions. Across the studied models, each regime consistently emerges under a specific interaction scheme and leaves a distinct set of fingerprints in terms of the number of observed states, their species richness and their response to perturbations. Our results help clarify the conditions and types of multistability that can be expected to occur in complex ecological communities.

Abstract:Integrated community models—an emerging framework in which multiple data sources for multiple species are analyzed simultaneously—offer opportunities to expand inferences beyond the single‐species and single‐data‐source approaches common in ecology. We developed a novel integrated community model that combines distance sampling and single‐visit count data; within the model, information is shared among data sources (via a joint likelihood) and species (via a random‐effects structure) to estimate abundance patterns across a community. Parameters relating to abundance are shared between data sources, and the model can specify either shared or separate observation processes for each data source. Simulations demonstrated that the model provided unbiased estimates of abundance and detection parameters even when detection probabilities varied between the data types. The integrated community model also provided more accurate and more precise parameter estimates than alternative single‐species and single‐data‐source models in many instances. We applied the model to a community of 11 herbivore species in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, and found considerable interspecific variation in response to local wildlife management practices: Five species showed higher abundances in a region with passive conservation enforcement (median across species: 4.5× higher), three species showed higher abundances in a region with active conservation enforcement (median: 3.9× higher), and the remaining three species showed no abundance differences between the two regions. Furthermore, the community average of abundance was slightly higher in the region with active conservation enforcement but not definitively so (posterior mean: higher by 0.20 animals; 95% credible interval: 1.43 fewer animals, 1.86 more animals). Our integrated community modeling framework has the potential to expand the scope of inference over space, time, and levels of biological organization, but practitioners should carefully evaluate whether model assumptions are met in their systems and whether data integration is valuable for their applications.

Abstract:This concluding chapter is divided into two distinct parts. The first part is a brief review of what I conceive to be some of the main themes that have emerged recently from theoretical and empirical studies of the dynamics of single populations. These themes have been sounded in many of the earlier chapters in this book, and they serve to draw together a large and diverse amount of information about the way real populations behave in the laboratory and in the field. Much of this work, at the level of single populations, has the satisfying property of putting theoretical curves through, or at least near, collections of data points.In contrast, the second part is almost wholly speculative. Here mathematical models are used to explore questions about the way multispecies systems are organized. The models are necessarily greatly oversimplified, and at best bear a metaphorical relation to real ecosystems. This second part begins with a review of the various studies suggesting that, as a mathematical generality, increasing complexity (more species, a richer web of interactions) leads to diminishing dynamical stability (less ability to withstand, or recover from, disturbances). It goes on to review several mechanisms whereby the structure of real ecosystems may reconcile special kinds of complexity with dynamical stability.

Abstract:We study an individual-based predator-prey model of biological coevolution, using linear stability analysis and large-scale kinetic Monte Carlo simulations. The model exhibits approximate 1/f noise in diversity and population-size fluctuations, and it generates a sequence of quasi-steady communities in the form of simple food webs. These communities are quite resilient toward the loss of one or a few species, which is reflected in different power-law exponents for the durations of communities and the lifetimes of species. The exponent for the former is near -1, while the latter is close to -2. Statistical characteristics of the evolving communities, including degree (predator and prey) distributions and proportions of basal, intermediate, and top species, compare reasonably with data for real food webs.

Abstract:What makes populations stabilize? What makes them fluctuate? Are populations in complex ecosystems more stable than populations in simple ecosystems? In 1973, Robert May addressed these questions in this classic book. May investigated the mathematical roots of population dynamics and argued-counter to most current biological thinking-that complex ecosystems in themselves do not lead to population stability. Stability and Complexity in Model Ecosystems played a key role in introducing nonlinear mathematical models and the study of deterministic chaos into ecology, a role chronicled in James Gleick's book Chaos. In the quarter century since its first publication, the book's message has grown in power. Nonlinear models are now at the center of ecological thinking, and current threats to biodiversity have made questions about the role of ecosystem complexity more crucial than ever. In a new introduction, the author addresses some of the changes that have swept biology and the biological world since the book's first publication.

Abstract:Understanding how species loss impacts ecosystem stability is critical given contemporary declines in global biodiversity. Despite decades of research on biodiversity–stability relationships, most studies are performed within a trophic level, overlooking the multitrophic complexity structuring natural communities. Here, in a global analysis of diversity–synchrony–stability (DSS) studies ( n = 420), we found that 74% were monotrophic and biased towards terrestrial plant communities, with 91% describing stabilizing effects of asynchrony. Multitrophic studies (26%) were representative of all biomes and showed that synchrony had mixed effects on stability. To explore potential mechanisms, we applied a multitrophic framework adapted from DSS theory to investigate DSS relationships in algae–herbivore assemblages across five long-term tropical and temperate marine system datasets. Both algal and herbivore species diversity reduced within-group synchrony in both systems but had different interactive effects on species synchrony between systems. Herbivore synchrony was positively and negatively influenced by algal diversity in tropical versus temperate systems, respectively, and algal synchrony was positively influenced by herbivore diversity in temperate systems. While herbivore synchrony reduced multitrophic stability in both systems, algal synchrony only reduced stability in tropical systems. These results highlight the complexity of DSS relationships at the multitrophic level and emphasize why more multitrophic assessments are needed to better understand how biodiversity influences community stability in nature.

Abstract:Stability is a desirable property of complex ecosystems. If a community of interacting species is at a stable equilibrium point then it is able to withstand small perturbations to component species' abundances without suffering adverse effects. In ecology, the Jacobian matrix evaluated at an equilibrium point is known as the community matrix, which describes the population dynamics of interacting species. A system's asymptotic short- and long-term behaviour can be determined from eigenvalues derived from the community matrix. Here we use results from the theory of pseudospectra to describe intermediate, transient dynamics. We first recover the established result that the transition from stable to unstable dynamics includes a region of `transient instability', where the effect of a small perturbation to species' abundances---to the population vector---is amplified before ultimately decaying. Then we show that the shift from stability to transient instability can be affected by uncertainty in, or small changes to, entries in the community matrix, and determine lower and upper bounds to the maximum amplitude of perturbations to the population vector. Of five different types of community matrix, we find that amplification is least severe when predator-prey interactions dominate. This analysis is relevant to other systems whose dynamics can be expressed in terms of the Jacobian matrix. Our results will lead to improved understanding of how multiple perturbations to a complex system may irrecoverably break stability.

Time‐delay versus stability in population models with two and three trophic levels

Abstract:If a biological or other system has a potentially stabilizing negative feedback mechanism, which, however, is applied with a time lag long compared to the natural time scale of the system, the result is instability, not stability. This theme is developed in detail for vegetation—herbivore and vegetation—herbivore—carnivore systems in which the stabilizing resource—limitation effect operates on the herbivore population with a time lag. Under certain conditions, which are commonly met in nature, the vegetation—herbivore—carnivore system is stable (with population fluctuations being damped out), while the vegetation—herbivore system with no predators is unstable. This model, which can be supported with some observational data, suggests inter alia that herbivore population numbers may often be set neither by predators alone nor by vegetation alone, but by an explicit interplay between both effects.

Abstract:Biology of a marine resources is a descriptive science. The description is the first step towards understanding a system. However, the main objective is to present a rigorous mathematical analysis and numerical simulation of these spatio temporal models. In the present paper, we consider a two species food chain, i.e. a prey and predator populations modeled in a two-patch environment, one of which is a free fishing zone and the other one is protected zone. We study the qualitative analysis of solutions and we establish sufficient conditions under which the endemic and trivial equilibria are asymptotically stable.The asymptotic stability corresponding to the equilibria is graphically shown.

Extinctions as a vestige of instability: the geometry of stability and feasibility

Abstract:Species coexistence is a complex, multifaceted problem. At an equilibrium, coexistence requires two conditions: stability under small perturbations; and feasibility, meaning all species abundances are positive. Which of these two conditions is more restrictive has been debated for many years, with many works focusing on statistical arguments for systems with many species. Within the framework of the Lotka-Volterra equations, we examine the geometry of the region of coexistence in the space of interaction strengths, for symmetric competitive interactions and any finite number of species. We consider what happens when starting at a point within the coexistence region, and changing the interaction strengths continuously until one of the two conditions breaks. We find that coexistence generically breaks through the loss of feasibility, as the abundance of one species reaches zero. An exception to this rule - where stability breaks before feasibility - happens only at isolated points, or more generally on a lower dimensional subset of the boundary.

Abstract:Explaining coexistence in species-rich communities of primary producers remains a challenge for ecologists because of their likely competition for shared resources. Following Hutchinson's seminal suggestion, many theoreticians have tried to create diversity through a fluctuating environment, which impairs or slows down competitive exclusion. However, fluctuating-environment models often only produce a dozen of coexisting species at best. Here, we investigate how to create richer communities in fluctuating environments, using an empirically parameterized model. Building on the forced Lotka-Volterra model of Scranton and Vasseur (Theor Ecol 9(3):353-363, 2016), inspired by phytoplankton communities, we have investigated the effect of two coexistence mechanisms, namely the storage effect and higher intra- than interspecific competition strengths (i.e., strong self-regulation). We tuned the intra/inter competition ratio based on empirical analyses, in which self-regulation dominates interspecific interactions. Although a strong self-regulation maintained more species (50%) than the storage effect (25%), we show that none of the two coexistence mechanisms considered could ensure the coexistence of all species alone. Realistic seasonal environments only aggravated that picture, as they decreased persistence relative to a random environment. However, strong self-regulation and the storage effect combined superadditively so that all species could persist with both mechanisms at work. Our results suggest that combining different coexistence mechanisms into community models might be more fruitful than trying to find which mechanism best explains diversity. We additionally highlight that while biomass-trait distributions provide some clues regarding coexistence mechanisms, they cannot indicate unequivocally which mechanisms are at play.

Abstract:Modern biodiversity monitoring is generating increasingly multidimensional representations of wildlife populations and ecosystems. It is therefore appealing for conservation and environmental governance to combine that information into single measure of ecosystem or population health. Stability is a desirable feature of ecosystems that supports this aim. It is primarily measured through its resistance, resilience (a.k.a recovery), and variability. The Jacobian matrix is a common characteristic used to identify the resistance and resilience of deterministic mathematical systems and whilst historically it has been challenging to estimate from empirical data, recent work has proposed a suite of metrics capable of reconstructing it for a real-world community using time series data. Here we assess the robustness of three Jacobian metrics and two variability estimating stability metrics (multivariate index of variability and Fisher information) to varying time series lengths and data qualities based on that seen in real-world wildlife time series. We generate data using multispecies Lotka Volterra equations and simulate stressed and unstressed communities of varying species number. These data were then corrupted through the introduction of sampling error (to mimic varying search efforts) and truncating time series (to match the typical time series lengths reported in global biodiversity datasets such as the Living Planet Index and BIOTIME). The robustness of all stability metrics improved with time series length and sampling error in the anticipated manner. However, community size (number of species) dramatically altered metric capability, with larger communities decreasing the reliability of stability metric trends. Overall, stability metrics behave predictably across realistic data corruptions. Generic stability estimation is therefore possible from abundance time series alone, and we suggest that, given the increasing availability of multivariate community data, focussing on Jacobian estimates is a promising avenue of research. However, we also show it is prudent to apply ecological knowledge when selecting which species to contribute.
