Abstract:We develop a system to measure the elemental composition of unprepared samples using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) in our laboratory, which can be used for the determination of elements in solids, liquids and aerosols. A description of the instrumentation, including laser, sample chamber and detection, is followed by a brief discussion. The time-resolved LIBS of aluminum at atmospheric pressure is presented. At the end, the possibilities and later uses of this technique are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has emerged as a promising technique for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of elements in a wide variety of samples. However, conventional LIBS suffers from a high limit of detection (LoD) compared with other analytical techniques. This review briefly discusses several methods that demonstrate the applicability and prospects for trace element detection while lowering the LoD when coupled with LIBS. This review compares the enhancement mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of these techniques. Finally, the recent development and application of LIBS coupled techniques for trace element detection are also discussed for various samples such as metal alloys, biomaterials, rare earth elements, explosives, drinking water, and water bodies.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) assisted with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) was introduced to detect trace aluminum in steatite ceramics in this work. The mechanism and transition process of laser-induced aluminum atomic fluorescence in laser-induced plasma was described and discussed. Selective enhancement of LIF and temporal synchronicity between radiation laser and fluorescence were studied. The influences of ablation laser energy, power density of the radiation laser, and interpulse delay were experimentally investigated. The results showed that 60 mJ in ablation laser energy and 4 μs in interpulse delay were the optimal choice for fluorescent intensity. The fluorescence was increased to the saturation level over 4 MW/cm2. Spectral stability improvement of LIBS-LIF was also discovered in this work. The results proved that LIBS-LIF is a feasible and effective modification of LIBS for ceramics analysis.

Abstract:LASER-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied using a long-duration single pulse on an immersed brass alloys target for spectroscopic studies. The plasma of the alloys was generated in air and underwater using a single pulse with longer duration of Nd:YAG laser. The spectral profiles of the Copper (Cu) emission lines were investigated, and we observed that the emission lines were severely affected by self-absorption in the underwater measurements. The LIBS signals were corrected before quantitative analysis through calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS). The plasma parameters, electron number density, and plasma temperature were calculated, and the results were compared for both LIBS measurements. The results showed that the use of a long-duration pulse allows in situ quantitative analysis of the heavy metal alloys in underwater, such as Cu.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a widely used laser spectroscopic technique in various fields, such as material science, forensic science, biological science, and the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In most LIBS work, the analysis is performed using radiative transitions from atomic emissions. In this study, the plasma temperature and the product [Formula: see text] (the number density N and the absorption path length [Formula: see text]) were determined to evaluate the optical depths and the self-absorption of Sr and Al lines. A binary mixture of strontium nitrate and aluminum oxide was used as a sample, consisting of variety of different concentrations in powder form. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy spectra were collected by varying various parameters, such as laser energy, gate delay time, and gate width time to optimize the LIBS signals. Atomic emission from Sr and Al lines, as observed in the LIBS spectra of different sample compositions, was used to characterize the laser induced plasma and evaluate the optical depths and self-absorption of LIBS.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) distribution of elements on the sample surface is very important for materials analysis. With its micro-damage characteristic, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has the potential to realize 3D distribution analysis of elements on the material surface. In this work, we investigated a method of imageassisted laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (IA-LIBS) to monitor the ablation process. The changing trends of spectral intensities, ablation crater parameters and plasma image features with the number of pulses have been analysed. To obtain the best prediction accuracy for the average depth of ablation crater, a partial least square regression (PLSR) prediction model was established by using the features of gray-gradient co-occurrence matrix (GGCM) in plasma images. The coefficient of determination (R-2) of the model was 0.954, the root-mean-square error of cross-validation (RMSECV) was 7.535, and the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 7.442. Finally, 3D distribution analysis of Mg and Fe elements on the surface of 5052 aluminum alloy was realized. The experimental results indicate that IA-LIBS can effectively monitor the ablation process.

Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.

Abstract:The working principle of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was interpreted. The elemental recognition process was discussed. The reason for elemental recognition error was analyzed. A recognition method based on the standard samples was suggested. A LIBS experimental system was setup and the experiments for the standard and unknown samples were carried out. The feasibility and the recognition advantages of the method were proved by the experimental results.

Abstract:Trace mineral elements play an important role in biological materials. Even minute portions of them can powerfully affect living processes. Indeed, it is possible to characterize such materials and processes by the concentration of trace elements they contain. Humans, too, rely on intake of these substances from foods for health. But the balance is a delicate one: excessive amounts of heavy metals in food—for example, those caused by pollution— are dangerous. Consequently, the ability to detect and analyze trace elements is essential. Several current techniques have attempted to address this problem, such as inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. But these methods often require laboratory-scale equipment and sophisticated sample preparation. Our group has taken a different approach that consists of applying laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) to biological materials. Briefly, in LIBS a laser pulse is focused on the surface of a sample. A small amount of material is ablated from the sample in a hot, lightemitting plasma. The spectral analysis of the emitted light reveals the elemental composition and especially the trace element concentration of the sample. The advantages of the technique include direct analysis without sample preparation, a compact system that operates under atmospheric pressure, and high spatial resolution. Our work has proceeded in two stages. First, we managed to discriminate a variety of bacteria by detecting the trace mineral elements contained in them.1 Five different types of bacteria were grown in the same nutrient liquid, among them four so-called Gram-negative species (Acinetobacter baylyi, Figure 1. Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) provides a technique to directly determine metals in viscous liquids and especially in lubricating oils. A specific laser ablation configuration of a thin layer of oil applied on the surface of a pure aluminum target was used to evaluate the analytical figures of merit of LIBS for elemental analysis of lubricating oils. Among the analyzed oils, there were a certified 75cSt blank mineral oil, 8 virgin lubricating oils (synthetic, semi-synthetic, or mineral and of 2 different manufacturers), 5 used oils (corresponding to 5 among the 8 virgin oils), and a cooking oil. The certified blank oil and 4 virgin lubricating oils were spiked with metallo-organic standards to obtain laboratory reference samples with different oil matrix. We first established calibration curves for 3 elements, Fe, Cr, Ni, with the 5 sets of laboratory reference samples in order to evaluate the matrix effect by the comparison among the different oils. Our results show that generalized calibration curves can be built for the 3 analyzed elements by merging the measured line intensities of the 5 sets of spiked oil samples. Such merged calibration curves with good correlation of the merged data are only possible if no significant matrix effect affects the measurements of the different oils. In the second step, we spiked the remaining 4 virgin oils and the cooking oils with Fe, Cr and Ni. The accuracy and the precision of the concentration determination in these prepared oils were then evaluated using the generalized calibration curves. The concentrations of metallic elements in the 5 used lubricating oils were finally determined.

Abstract:The working principle of the laser induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) is interpreted.A LIBS experimental setup is developed based on Nd∶YAG laser and CCD grating spectrometer.Several experiments were carried out to study the effect of laser pulse energy,delay time and pressure.Atomic spectra was obtained using lower pulse energy;The best S/N could be realized by adjusting the delay time;Some samples could be induced to breakdown without strong continuum background;Emission signal with good S/N could be obtained at low pressure(5×10-5Pa),but the signal intensity was lower than at air pressure.The standard atomic spectra could be obtained by carrying out LIBS analysis of pure samples in the sample chamber,and the elemental recognition of unknown samples could be realized by comparing their atomic spectra with the standard spectra,in which the system recognition error was avoided.

Abstract:Liquid surface and liquid aerosol as the traditional liquid forms for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and inductively coupled plasma (ICP), respectively, have been used to analyze chromium (Cr) and cadmium (Cd) elements using LIBS in a liquid solution. The spectral differences, the effects of laser energy and laser frequency, the accumulated number of laser pulses, gate delay time, and the quantitative analyses for a liquid surface and a liquid aerosol were compared. The results showed that the liquid surface demonstrated a lower plasma threshold, higher optical emission intensity, and higher single-to-noise ratio. Moreover, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the intensities of the liquid aerosol are better than those of the liquid surface. Furthermore, the results of the quantitative analyses of Cr I 357.86 nm and Cd I 361.05 nm of the liquid surface are close to those of the liquid aerosol. The limit of detections of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 2.764 and 86.869 μg/mL, which were close to those of liquid aerosol, 2.847 μg/mL of Cr and 97.635 μg/mL of Cd. For both the liquid surface and liquid aerosol, the coefficient of determination R2 of the calibration curve for Cr and Cd were above 0.99, and the average RSDs of Cr and Cd of the liquid surface were 0.027 and 0.054, which were similar to the 0.020 of Cr and 0.042 of Cd of the liquid aerosol. These results suggest that both the liquid surface and aerosol have similar detection abilities for water quality monitoring.

Abstract:Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) instruments are increasingly recognized as valuable tools for detecting trace metal elements due to their simplicity, rapid detection, and ability to perform simultaneous multi-element analysis. Traditional LIBS modeling often relies on empirical or machine learning-based feature band selection to establish quantitative models. In this study, we introduce a novel approach-simultaneous multi-element quantitative analysis based on the entire spectrum, which enhances model establishment efficiency and leverages the advantages of LIBS. By logarithmically processing the spectra and quantifying the cognitive uncertainty of the model, we achieved remarkable predictive performance (R2) for trace elements Mn, Mo, Cr, and Cu (0.9876, 0.9879, 0.9891, and 0.9841, respectively) in stainless steel. Our multi-element model shares features and parameters during the learning process, effectively mitigating the impact of matrix effects and self-absorption. Additionally, we introduce a cognitive error term to quantify the cognitive uncertainty of the model. The results suggest that our approach has significant potential in the quantitative analysis of trace elements, providing a reliable data processing method for efficient and accurate multi-task analysis in LIBS. This methodology holds promising applications in the field of LIBS quantitative analysis.
In situ elemental analysis and failures detection during additive manufacturing process utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:The feasibility of in situ quantitative multielemental analysis and production failures detection by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been demonstrated during direct energy deposition process in additive manufacturing. Compact LIBS probe was developed and equipped with the laser cladding head installed at industrial robot for real-time chemical quantitative analysis of key components (Ni, W) during the synthesis of high wear resistant coatings of nickel alloy reinforced with tungsten carbide particles. Owing to non-uniform distribution of tungsten carbide grains in the upper surface layer the only acceptable choice for LIBS sampling was made to the melt pool at growing clad. Laser ablation at powder particles above melt pool was insignificant for LIBS plasma properties due to low intensity and low probability of plasma breakdown at powder particles. No impact of LIBS sampling on cladding process and clad properties was observed according to optical and scanning electron microscopies. The feasibility of in situ LIBS quantitative elemental analysis of key components (tungsten and nickel) has been demonstrated during the cladding process. LIBS analysis results were in good agreement with offline measurements by electron energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy. Finally, LIBS technique was demonstrated to be a good tool for real-time detection of cladding process failures (poor laser beam quality, undesirable variation of components concentrations).
Strategies for residue explosives detection using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:The ability to detect trace amounts of explosives and their residues in real time is of vital interest to Homeland Security and the military. Previous work at the US Army Research Laboratory (ARL) demonstrated the potential of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the detection of energetic materials. Our recent efforts have been focused on improving the sensitivity and selectivity of LIBS for residue explosives detection and on extending this work to the standoff detection of explosive residues. One difficulty with detecting energetic materials is that the contribution to the oxygen and nitrogen signals from air can impede the identification of the explosive material. Techniques for reducing the air entrainment into the plasma—such as using an argon buffer gas or a collinear double-pulse configuration—have been investigated for this application. In addition to the laboratory studies, ARL’s new double-pulse standoff system (ST-LIBS) has recently been used to detect explosive residues at 20 m. The efficacy of chemometric techniques such as linear correlation, principal components analysis (PCA), and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for the identification of explosive residues is also discussed. We have shown that despite the typical characterization of LIBS as an elemental technique, the relative elemental intensities in the LIBS spectra are representative of the stoichiometry of the parent molecules and can be used to discriminate materials containing the same elements. Simultaneous biohazard and explosive residue discrimination at standoff distances has also been demonstrated.

Abstract:The use of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the analysis of heavy metals in water samples is investigated. Some factors such as splashing, surface ripples, extinction of emitted intensity, and a shorter plasma lifetime will influence the results if the water sample is directly measured. In order to avoid these disadvantages and the 'coffee-ring effect', hydrophilic graphite flakes with annular grooves were used for the first time to enrich and concentrate heavy metals in water samples before being analyzed by LIBS. The proposed method and procedure have been evaluated to concentrate and analyze cadmium, chromium, copper, nickel, lead, and zinc in a water sample. The correlation coefficients were all above 0.99. The detection limits of 0.029, 0.087, 0.012, 0.083, 0.125, and 0.049 mg l(-1) for Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn, respectively, were obtained in samples prepared in a laboratory. With this structure, the heavy metals homogeneously distribute in the annular groove and the relative standard deviations are all below 6%. This method is very convenient and suitable for online in situ analysis of heavy metals.
Quantitative aluminum alloys analysis using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy

Abstract:An intense laser radiation was focused on the surface of the sample to generate a plasma plume which vaporized a small amount of alloy material. The emission spectrum emitted as the plasma cooling off, which contained the information of elemental species and concentration in alloy, was collected and analyzed by high-resolution echelle grating spectrometer coupled to intensified charge coupled device (ICCD) camera. A series of standard aluminum alloy reference samples were analyzed for their alloying elements, including Fe, Si, and Cu. Results for Fe, Si, and Cu indicated limits of detection that ranged from 6 × 10-5 - 10 × 10-5 and almost all measurement relative errors less than 5% when mass concentration are over 0.01%. The absolute measurement errors for element with mass concentration under 0.01% were less than 0.001%.

Abstract:Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a kind of laser ablation spectrum analysis technology, which has the advantages of small sample damage, fast detection speed and simultaneous detection of multiple elements. In this paper, a LIBS system based on passive Q-switched laser is designed, which is used to carry out marine heavy metal detection research Aiming at the two or more laser pulses that the laser may generate in a single pumping cycle, a laser pulse control module is designed in this paper to analyze and judge the number of laser pulses, and obtain good experimental results. Using this LIBS system to output single-pulse and double-pulse lasers to detect samples of seawater and shells in different regions, we can detect the presence of characteristic spectral lines of elements such as Na, Mg, Ga and other elements in seawater. At the same time, the characteristic spectra of Cu, Al and some other elements are found in the shell samples, which suggest that there are heavy metal pollution components in the shells.
