Abstract:Powder materials utilized in additive technologies were quantitatively analyzed by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy for the first time. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy mapping of loose metal powder attached to the double-sided adhesive tape provided high reproducibility of measurements even for powder mixtures with large difference of particles densities (tungsten carbide particles in nickel alloy powder). Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy analytical capabilities for tungsten and carbon analysis were estimated by calibration curve construction and accuracy estimation by leave-one-out cross-validation procedure. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy and X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy techniques comparison revealed better results for laser induced breakdown spectroscopy analysis. Improved accuracy of analysis and capability to quantify light elements (carbon etc.) demonstrated large perspectives of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy as a technique for express on-site multelement analysis of powder materials utilized in additive technologies.

Abstract:Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been applied for the depth profiling of multilayer metallic coating structure which is simulated to the ITER-like wall materials in fusion devices such as EAST tokamak. The coatings were produced by magnetron sputtering and characterized by LIBS using a Nd:YAG laser at 1064 nm with pulse duration of 5 ns. The light from the resulting plasma was analyzed as a function of both number of laser pulse (N) and elemental spectral line intensity. The depth profile of the multilayer coating was determined by three different spectral signal processing methods; intensity background subtraction, intensity normalization and linear Pearson correlation. The intensity normalization method provides the best outcomes/solutions for thickness measurement and analysis of interfaces of multilayer coatings among other methods. The evolution of spectral intensity representing different materials was properly examined for 90 consecutive laser shots at the same spot. The ablation behaviour of the coating materials was analyzed in terms of ablation rate under the laser pulse of various fluences. In a much deep crater, some factors originating from laser ablation, such as material re-deposition and plasma shielding effect were analyzed. As a comparison, the depth, shape and diameter of craters were also measured using SEM and a profilometer. The influence of laser power density on the ablation rate and crater profile was investigated. The elemental composition, inside the crater, was verified by the EDX technique. The results indicate that LIBS has a potential power for in-situ depth profiling of multilayer coatings on the wall of the EAST.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a laser based diagnostics used to study atomic emission from the expanding plasma plume formed during the laser-matter interaction. It provides valuable information about the composition of the target material. LIBS has proved its potential application in the analysis of impurities, pollutants and toxic elements in various types of matrices of different samples (solid, liquid and gases), even those present under difficult and harsh environmental conditions. This article reviews some recent developments in the field, and its wide application in various fields of research and analysis.

Abstract:The high corrosion resistance and good mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel (DSS) are due to its special chemical composition, which is a balanced phase ratio of ferrite (α) and austenite (γ). Many industrial applications require the integration of DSS components. For this, Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) is an excellent choice, as it allows an automated operation with high reproducibility. However, when the weld pool solidifies, critical ratios of α- and γ- phases can occur, which lead to solidification cracking, increased susceptibility to corrosion, and a decrease in ductility and critical strength. Previous studies have shown that these defects can be caused by the accumulation of manganese and chromium in the heat affected zone (HAZ), requiring ongoing monitoring of this accumulation. A suitable method for such monitoring is laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), which can be used in two operating modes: calibration using standard reference samples and calibration-free. Unlike conventional quantitative LIBS measurements, which require reference samples to generate a calibration curve, calibration-free LIBS (CF-LIBS) allows chemical compositions to be determined solely from the emission spectrum of the plasma. Numerous publications show that CF-LIBS is a fast and efficient analytical method for the quantitative analysis of metal samples. In this work, CF-LIBS is applied to spectra obtained during GTAW DSS welding and the result is compared with those obtained by PLS analysis. A good correlation was found between both types of analysis, demonstrating the suitability of the CF-LIBS method for this application. The CF-LIBS method has a significant advantage over conventional LIBS due to the rapid in situ measurement of concentrations of major alloying elements without calibration procedure. This, combined with fast feedback and appropriate adjustment of welding parameters, helps prevent welding defects.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a rapidly developing technique for chemical materials analysis. LIBS is applied for fundamental investigations, e.g., the laser plasma matter interaction, for element, molecule, and isotope analysis, and for various technical applications, e.g., minimal destructive materials inspection, the monitoring of production processes, and remote analysis of materials in hostile environment. In this review, we focus on the element analysis of industrial materials and the in-line chemical sensing in industrial production. After a brief introduction we discuss the optical emission of chemical elements in laser-induced plasma and the capability of LIBS for multi-element detection. An overview of the various classes of industrial materials analyzed by LIBS is given. This includes so-called Technology materials that are essential for the functionality of modern high-tech devices (smartphones, computers, cars, etc.). The LIBS technique enables unique applications for rapid element analysis under harsh conditions where other techniques are not available. We present several examples of LIBS-based sensors that are applied in-line and at-line of industrial production processes.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:A feature of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), the ability to perform depth profiling, has been exploited to analyze a tungsten‐copper functionally graded material (FGM), considered a relevant candidate for components in a nuclear fusion reactor. The proposed method relies on establishing correlations between the depth of ablation craters and the number of laser pulses, along with the accompanying LIBS spectra acquired by varying a number of laser pulses. LIBS measurements were performed using a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser at 532 nm with 100 mJ/pulse energy under reduced Ar pressure. The ablation craters were analyzed using optical profilometry. The copper concentration at each specific depth was assessed using a univariate calibration curve constructed with intensity ratios of Cu I 521.82 nm and W I 522.47 nm spectral lines. The calibration samples were pure W and homogenous W/Cu composite samples with different Cu content (10.9% - 35.3%) whose composition was determined by X-ray fluorescence. The proposed method exhibits potential applicability for quantitative analysis of multilayered materials.

Abstract:We study the capability of nanosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (ns-LIBS) for depth-resolved concentration measurements of Li-Ion battery cathodes. With our system, which is optimized for quality control applications in the production line, we pursue the goal to unveil manufacturing faults and irregularities during the production process of cathodes as early as possible. Femtosecond laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (fs-LIBS) is widely considered to be better suited for depth-resolved element analysis. Nevertheless, the small size and intensity of the plasma plume, non-thermal energy distribution in the plasma and high investment costs of fs-LIBS make ns-LIBS more attractive for inline application in the industrial surrounding. The system, presented here for the first time, is able to record quasi-depth-resolved relative concentration profiles for carbon, nickel, manganese, cobalt, lithium and aluminum which are the typical elements used in the binder/conductive additive, the active cathode material and the current collector. LIBS often causes high variations in signal intensity from pulse to pulse, so concentration determination is, in general, conducted on the average of many pulses. We show that the spot-to-spot variations we measure are governed by the microstructure of the cathode foil and are not an expression of the limited precision of the LIBS setup.

Abstract:Published literature shows defect formation during laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) of nickel base superalloys are sensitive to alloy chemistry, processing conditions, and geometry. In this work, ability to detect spatial distributions of defects is explored using <i>in-situ</i> monitoring of thermal signatures and surfaces. Simple and complex geometrical components were fabricated with CM247-LC® powder in an AM machine outfitted with optical and thermal sensors. The spatial and temporal variations of thermal signatures (peak intensity, decay, and number of gyrations), as well as, layer-by-layer optical images were analyzed. The observed thermal signatures were also verified with an analytical model for layer-wise heat transfer simulation that is sensitive to laser raster scan strategies. The cross-comparison data with reference to defects, obtained by X-ray tomography, were correlated with <i>in-situ</i> observations.

Abstract:The childcare environment represents an appropriate avenue to support physical activity among preschoolers. The aim of this study was two-fold: (1) to measure the physical activity levels of a sample of preschoolers during childcare hours; and (2) to assess which attributes (e.g., space, equipment, policies) within centre-based childcare environments influenced physical activity. Thirty-one preschoolers from 5 childcare centres across London, Canada participated. Actical accelerometers were worn by participants for one day during childcare hours to assess activity levels using a 15 second epoch length. The Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation instrument was used to conduct a full-day evaluation of the childcare environment. On average, participants engaged in 1.54 min/h of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and 17.42 min/h of total physical activity. Sedentary opportunities, portable and fixed play equipment, and staff behaviour accounted for 49.3% of the variability in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity and 14.1% of the variability in total physical activity, with sedentary opportunities, fixed play equipment, and staff behaviours displaying an inverse relationship. Results emphasize the critical role the childcare environment plays in supporting physical activity among preschoolers.

Abstract:The rapid, high-resolution material processing offered by ultrashort pulsed lasers enables a wide range of micro and nanomachining applications in a variety of disciplines. Complex laser processing jobs conducted on composite samples, require an awareness of the material type that is interacting with laser both for adjustment of the lasering process and for endpointing. This calls for real-time detection of the materials. Several methods such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and energy dispersive X-Ray spectroscopy (EDS) can be used for material characterization. However, these methods often need interruption of the machining process to transfer the sample to another instrument for inspection. Such interruption significantly increases the required time and effort for the machining task, acting as a prohibitive factor for many laser machining applications. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful technique that can be used for material characterization, by analyzing a signal that is generated upon the interaction of laser with matter, and thus, it can be considered as a strong candidate for developing an in-situ characterization method. In this work, we propose a method that uses LIBS in a feedback loop system for real time detection and decision making for adjustment of the lasering process on-the-fly. Further, use of LIBS for automated material segmentation, in the 3D image resulting from consecutive lasering and imaging steps, is showcased.

Abstract:LASER-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied using a long-duration single pulse on an immersed brass alloys target for spectroscopic studies. The plasma of the alloys was generated in air and underwater using a single pulse with longer duration of Nd:YAG laser. The spectral profiles of the Copper (Cu) emission lines were investigated, and we observed that the emission lines were severely affected by self-absorption in the underwater measurements. The LIBS signals were corrected before quantitative analysis through calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS). The plasma parameters, electron number density, and plasma temperature were calculated, and the results were compared for both LIBS measurements. The results showed that the use of a long-duration pulse allows in situ quantitative analysis of the heavy metal alloys in underwater, such as Cu.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is widely used for elemental analysis. However, its application for monitoring and analyzing a laser machining process by examining the changes in spectral information warrants further investigation. In this study, we investigate the effect of laser parameters on the spectra, variations in the time-resolved plasma emission spectra, and the relationship between the morphology of craters and plasma plume evolution during the femtosecond (fs) laser ablation of sapphire. The Boltzmann plot method and Stark's broadening model are employed to estimate the temporal temperature and electron density of the plasma plume, revealing the process of plasma evolution. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of LIBS for online monitoring of laser processing through experimental data and theoretical explanations.

Abstract:Duplex stainless steels (DSS) are frequently used, especially in applications requiring high strength combined with high corrosion resistance in aggressive media. Examples include power plant components and maritime structures. During welding of these steels, local variations in chemical composition can occur. This results in ferritization of the material and negatively affects the mechanical properties of the components. In this work, tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding experiments were performed with DSS. Chemical composition analysis was realized in situ by using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS). The aim of the work is to quantitatively measure the chemical composition in the weld seam of various DSS and to identify possible influences of welding parameters on the microstructure of the material. The chemical concentrations of the main alloying elements Cr, Ni, Mn on the surface of the sample during the welding process and the cooling process were measured. Mn and Ni are austenite stabilizers and their content increases during welding by using certain high alloyed filler material. Spectra were recorded every 1.3 s at a spacing of approximately 2 mm. During the cooling process the location of the measurement was not changed. The LIBS method is proofed to be suitable for the quantitative representation of the chemical compositions during the welding process.

Quantitative analysis of tungsten in steel by one-point calibration laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy in vacuum

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been proposed as a promising in-situ diagnostic approach for the elemental analysis of the co-deposition impurities on plasma-facing components (PFCs) of the experimental advanced superconducting tokamak (EAST) as well as ITER tokamak. The EAST has been equipped with an ITER-like tungsten (W) divertor, and impurities of W originating from divertor erosion can be transported into core plasma as impurities, which seriously reduces the plasma performance with power radiation losses and fuel dilution. In the present work, to achieve a more reliable quantitative analysis, a variation of the CF-LIBS algorithm, the so-called one-point calibration LIBS (OPC-LIBS), is examined for major and minor constituents in a set of W-Mo-Fe-Cr steel samples (chosen as a proxy of the co-deposition layers on the lower hybrid wave gas puffing pipe of EAST) at 5 × 10 −5 mbar. The OPC-LIBS essentially employs one matrix-matched standard sample of known composition to evaluate the comprehensive correction factors of crucial experimental and spectroscopic parameters. These are essential for empirically correcting the LIBS line intensities to achieve a more precise quantitative analysis compared with the conventional CF-LIBS. In the case of OPC-LIBS measurement in vacuum, the relative error of major elements such as Fe (85.24–88.69a.t.%) is below 1.7%, while that of minor elements like W (1.91–6.27a.t.%) is within 24.79%. It is substantially better than the predicted results of CF-LIBS, in which the relative error of Fe and W in order are within 10.75% and 202.03%. The obtained results confirm the quantitative analysis capability of the OPC methodology in a tokamak environment for the in-situ LIBS system.

Abstract:The patterns of erosion and deposition occurred in the plasma-facing materials (PFMs) of a magnetic confinement fusion device are crucial for the investigation of plasma-wall interaction (PWI). The deposition behavior can be identified by the elemental depth profile of the deposition layer. As an effective remote monitoring method for the wall in nuclear fusion devices, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) shows excellent potential for the depth profiling of the deposition layer on the PFMs. However, some potentially influencing factors lead to the difficulty of distinguishing and identifying the interfaces between the deposition layers and substrate. The measuring accuracy of the deposition layer thickness plays an essential role in PWI research. In this paper, depth profiling of multilayer samples with Ni layers on Cu were performed using LIBS with an ns-pulse laser. The experiment was carried out under 5 × 10−5 mbar to simulate the operation of a nuclear fusion device. Meanwhile, a two-dimensional model for multi-pulse LIBS depth analysis based on the laser beam profile factor and interface roughness factor was established to reconstruct and predict the elemental depth profile distribution of NiCu multilayer materials. The correlation coefficients between the experimental and modeling data were all >0.99. We introduced a locating approach for the interface based on model prediction, and the relative errors of all Ni layer thicknesses were < 5.1%, demonstrating the feasibility and accuracy of the model. All the results show that the two-dimensional numerical model can improve the accuracy of LIBS depth profile on layer thickness analysis and further promote the application of in situ LIBS diagnosis in PWI research.

Abstract:This contribution presents the applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of several samples such as geological ores, cement, and industrial materials. A combination of LIBS with the laser ablation time‒of‒flight mass spectrometer (LA-TOF-MS) assists in elemental quantification and isotopic abundance analysis. Different elemental components such as aluminum (Al), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), lithium (Li), magnesium (Mg), sodium (Na), rubidium (Rb), silicon (Si), strontium (Sr), and titanium (Ti) in cement varieties, as well as rare earth metals, lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), and neodymium (Nd) in geological ore samples, and cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), iron (Fe), and molybdenum (Mo) in industrial standard material samples, have been precisely identified and their relative weight percentages estimated using CF-LIBS and LA-TOF-MS diagnostic techniques. To ensure the reliability of LIBS for the elemental analysis of industrial materials, a comparative study with other compatible techniques, including EDX, PIXE, and XRF, utilizing different excitation sources is presented. The results suggest that LIBS offers unique advantages, enabling rapid elemental analysis in circumstances where other techniques may face certain limitations.
