Abstract:We describe a new algorithm for Monte Carlo simulation of Ising spin systems and present results of a study comparing the speed of the new technique to that of a standard technique applied to a square lattice of 6400 spins evolving via single spin flips. We find that at temperatures T < Tc, the critical temperature, the new technique is faster than the standard technique, being ten times faster at T = 0.588 Tc. We expect that the new technique will be especially valuable in Monte Carlo simulation of the time evolution of binary alloy systems. The new algorithm is essentially a reorganization of the standard algorithm. It accounts for the a priori probability of changing spins before, rather than after, choosing the spin or spins to change.

Abstract:Advanced algorithms are necessary to obtain faster-than-real-time dynamic simulations in a number of different physical problems that are characterized by widely disparate time scales. Recent advanced dynamic Monte Carlo algorithms that preserve the dynamics of the model are described. These include the $n$-fold way algorithm, the Monte Carlo with Absorbing Markov Chains (MCAMC) algorithm, and the Projective Dynamics (PD) algorithm. To demonstrate the use of these algorithms, they are applied to some simplified models of dynamic physical systems. The models studied include a model for ion motion through a pore such as a biological ion channel and the metastable decay of the ferromagnetic Ising model. Non-trivial parallelization issues for these dynamic algorithms, which are in the class of parallel discrete event simulations, are discussed. Efforts are made to keep the article at an elementary level by concentrating on a simple model in each case that illustrates the use of the advanced dynamic Monte Carlo algorithm.

Abstract:The purpose of this comment is to correct mistaken assumptions and claims made in the paper Stochastic feedback, nonlinear families of Markov processes, and nonlinear Fokker-Planck equations by T. D. Frank. Our comment centers on the claims of a nonlinear Markov process and a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. First, memory in transition densities is misidentified as a Markov process. Second, Frank assumes that one can derive a Fokker-Planck equation from a Chapman-Kolmogorov equation, but no proof was given that a Chapman-Kolmogorov equation exists for memory-dependent processes. A nonlinear Markov process is claimed on the basis of a nonlinear diffusion pde for a 1-point probability density. We show that, regardless of which initial value problem one may solve for the 1-point density, the resulting stochastic process, defined necessarily by the transition probabilities, is either an ordinary linearly generated Markovian one, or else is a linearly generated nonMarkovian process with memory. We provide explicit examples of diffusion coefficients that reflect both the Markovian and the memory-dependent cases. So there is neither a nonlinear Markov process nor nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation for a transition density. The confusion rampant in the literature arises in part from labeling a nonlinear diffusion equation for a 1-point probability density as nonlinear Fokker-Planck, whereas neither a 1-point density nor an equation of motion for a 1-point density defines a stochastic process, and Borland misidentified a translation invariant 1-point density derived from a nonlinear diffusion equation as a conditional probability density. In the Appendix we derive Fokker-Planck pdes and Chapman-Kolmogorov eqns. for stochastic processes with finite memory.

Effective dynamics for a kinetic Monte-Carlo model with slow and fast time scales

Abstract:We consider several multiscale-in-time kinetic Monte Carlo models, in which some variables evolve on a fast time scale, while the others evolve on a slow time scale. In the first two models we consider, a particle evolves in a one-dimensional potential energy landscape which has some small and some large barriers, the latter dividing the state space into metastable regions. In the limit of infinitely large barriers, we identify the effective dynamics between these macro-states, and prove the convergence of the process towards a kinetic Monte Carlo model. We next consider a third model, which consists of a system of two particles. The state of each particle evolves on a fast time-scale while conserving their respective energy. In addition, the particles can exchange energy on a slow time scale. Considering the energy of the first particle, we identify its effective dynamics in the limit of asymptotically small ratio between the characteristic times of the fast and the slow dynamics. For all models, our results are illustrated by representative numerical simulations.

Abstract:We present here two irreversible Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithms for general discrete state systems. One of the algorithms is based on the random-scan Gibbs sampler for discrete states and the other on its improved version, the Metropolized-Gibbs sampler. The algorithms we present incorporate the lifting framework with skewed detailed balance condition and construct irreversible Markov chains that satisfy the balance condition. We have applied our algorithms to 1D 4-state Potts model. The integrated autocorrelation times for magnetization and energy density indicate a reduction of the dynamical scaling exponent from z ≈ 1 to z ≈ 1/2. In addition, we have generalized an irreversible Metropolis–Hastings algorithm with skewed detailed balance, initially introduced by Turitsyn et al. [ Physica D 2011, 240, 410] for the mean field Ising model, to be now readily applicable to classical spin systems in general; application to 1D 4-state Potts model indicate a square root reduction of the mixing time at high temperatures.

Abstract:Analysis of non-Markovian systems and memory induced phenomena poses an everlasting challenge for physics. As a paradigmatic example we consider a classical Brownian particle of mass $M$ subjected to an external force and exposed to correlated thermal fluctuations. We show that the recently developed approach to this system, in which its non-Markovian dynamics given by the Generalized Langevin Equation is approximated by its memoryless counterpart but with the effective particle mass $M^* < M$, can be derived within the Markovian embedding technique. Using this method we calculate the first and the second order memory correction to Markovian dynamics of the Brownian particle for the memory kernel represented as the Prony series. The second one lowers the effective mass of the system further and improves precision of the approximation. Our work opens the door for the derivation of higher order memory corrections to Markovian Langevin dynamics.
