Abstract:Two kinds of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE)/Kaolin composites were prepared by melt mixing and polymerization filling respectively. The erosion wear characteristics of these composites and their relations with the velocity of a sand slurry were investigated on an erosion-wear tester. The wear mechanisms of the composites were discussed through examining and analyzing the worn surfaces with scanning electron microscopy It was found that the UHMWPE/Kaolin composite containing about 6.6% (mass fraction) Kaolin prepared by polymerization filling has much better erosion-wear properties than UHMWPE, so that it is a promising structural material candidate for engineering application.

Abstract:<p>Activated carbons are materials with versatile properties but have not been demonstrated as reinforcements in polymer composites. In the current study, the porous nano activated carbon materials are synthesized from waste biomass (Arhar stalks) and utilized as reinforcements in the fabrication of epoxy composites with 1% wt, 2% wt, and 3% wt filler loadings. Porous nano activated carbon epoxy composites were studied for their erosion and abrasive wear properties. Erosion wear rate at different impact angles (30°, 45°, 60° and 90°) and impact velocities (i.e., 101 m/s, 119 m/s and 148 m/s) studied. It is observed that reinforcement of porous nano activated carbon in epoxy composites enhanced the wear resistance of composites by 106% with 1% inclusion of activated carbon. Minimum wear rate was noticed in 2% filler composites which have almost three times more resistance then epoxy polymer. Irrespective of percentage of filler loadings, all the composites exhibited semi ductile erosion wear behavior with maximum wear rate at 45° impact angle. Sliding wear analysis performed at various loads on different abrasive surfaces suggests 2% wt activated carbon epoxy composites have better abrasive wear resistance with least material loss on P800 abrasive surface. Eroded composites surfaces were examined microscopically and the wear mechanisms of the composites are discussed in detail.</p>

Abstract:In this study, we evaluated the use of bio-oil and biochar on epoxy resin. Bio-oil and biochar were obtained from the pyrolysis of wheat straw and hazelnut hull biomass. A range of bio-oil and biochar proportions on the epoxy resin properties and the effect of their substitution were investigated. TGA curves showed improved thermal stability for degradation temperature at the 5% (T5%), 10% (T10%), and 50% (T50%) weight losses on bioepoxy blends with the incorporation of bio-oil and biochar with respect to neat resin. However, decreases in the maximum mass loss rate temperature (Tmax) and the onset of thermal degradation (Tonset) were obtained. Raman characterization showed that the degree of reticulation with the addition of bio-oil and biochar does not significantly affect chemical curing. The mechanical properties were improved when bio-oil and biochar were incorporated into the epoxy resin. All bio-based epoxy blends showed a large increase in Young's modulus and tensile strength with respect to neat resin. Young's modulus was approximately 1955.90 to 3982.05 MPa, and the tensile strength was between 8.73 and 13.58 MPa for bio-based blends of wheat straw. Instead, in bio-based blends of hazelnut hulls, Young ́s modulus was 3060.02 to 3957.84 MPa, and tensile strength was 4.11 to 18.11 Mpa.

Abstract:This study presents a pioneering methodology for the synthesis of aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) fortified with biochar, sourced from renewable biomass feedstocks. Employing a systematic approach, various biochar weight percentages were meticulously investigated to discern their impact on the mechanical and tribological properties of the resulting composites. Through a comprehensive battery of tests, encompassing evaluations of compressive strength and hardness, the study elucidated significant enhancements in mechanical robustness consequent to biochar integration. Notably, the mixture formulation with 7.5 wt. % biochar emerged as the optimal configuration, showcasing an impressive 8.83% augmentation in compressive strength and a notable 15% elevation in the hardness relative to the pristine aluminum pure matrix. The research extends beyond traditional analyses, introducing an exploration of tribological performance. The incorporation of biochar is anticipated to impart solid lubricating properties, influencing wear and friction characteristics. Future research directions may delve into the nuanced interplay between biochar content and tribological enhancements, offering insights into the tailored manipulation of mechanical and tribological properties in AMC through biochar reinforcement. The examination of wear and friction exhibited that the friction coefficient decreased by 6.4% when 10 wt. % of biochar was added. Furthermore, the wear resistance improved proportionally with the biochar weight percentage, regardless of the normal loads applied. The finite element model further demonstrated an enhancement in load-carrying capacity due to biochar incorporation. Finally, analysis of the texture of the rubbed surface presented that the inclusion of biochar in an AL matrix changed the way wear occurs and decreased the amount of weight lost during friction. The resulting materials not only exhibit improved mechanical strength but also hold promise for applications in industries that demand robust, environmentally conscious solutions with enhanced tribological performance.

Abstract:Biochar (BC) is a by-product rich in carbon, from the pyrolysis of biomass, and therefore, it has great appeal to be used in several applications. In the present work, the use of biochar from poultry litter waste (PLW) as a filler for composites with epoxy resin is evaluated regarding its performance in the thermal, mechanical and dynamic mechanical properties. The BC was produced from the pyrolysis of the PLW, and the composites were produced from concentrations of 2.5, 5.0 and 10.0 wt% of BC, in relation to the epoxy resin mass. The composites were characterized in terms of micrography (MEV), infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), mechanical properties (tension and impact) and dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA). From the dynamic mechanical point of view, there was a considerable increase in parameters such as storage modulus at both glassy (≈ 23%) and rubbery regions (≈ 43%) and loss modulus (≈ 32%). However, a decrease at the glass transition temperature, in loss modulus, (≈ 19 °C) was reported, comparing the neat epoxy with those composites with 10 wt% of BC. This behavior was mainly related to the poor dispersion of BC into the composites, especially those with 10 wt% of reinforcement.

This article depicts the solid particle erosion wear behavior of the coconut shell dust-filled epoxy composites. The erosion wear behavior of the composites is evaluated by a solid erosion test rig according to Taguchi's design-of-experiment approach. The experiments are carried out by both sand and Al2O3 erodent. The study shows that the inclusion of coconut shell dust improves the erosion behavior of epoxy resin. The wear behavior analysis also reveals that erodent size, angle of impingement (B), and impact velocity (C) are the most significant factors in that sequence that influence the erosion rate of the composites. Further, computational fluid dynamics analysis (CFD) is implemented to study the temperature and velocity gradient of the composites under an erosive environment. The experimental results are validated with CFD simulation results, and both values are found to be in better agreement.

Abstract:In this present study for light weight and low-cost engineering applications, high toughness epoxy biocomposites were made using Caryota urens woven (CUW) fibre and coconut husk biochar (CHB) particle. The major goal of this study was to see how adding CHB particles to an epoxy resin composite containing CUW fibre affected the characteristics of the composite. Biochar was made from coconut husk utilizing a low-temperature pyrolysis technique in this study. The composites made with 5% CHB have the maximum tensile strength of 188 MPa. Similarly, a CHB concentration of 7% in epoxy resin reduced wear volume to a higher extent. Furthermore, the composite produced with 7vol. percent CHB had the highest dielectric constant and loss factor of 5.6 and 0.78, and a thermal conductivity of 0.34 W/mK with a larger contact angle of 72°. SEM scans revealed a heavily adherent phase of CHB in the epoxy resin matrix. Electrically stable composites with increased mechanical qualities could be employed in engineering applications such as insulation covers, higher current transmission tunnels, and the automotive industry.

Abstract:The goal of this work was to investigate the effect of the biochar additive (2.5; 5; 10 wt.%) on the properties of carbon fiber-reinforced bio-epoxy composites. The morphology of the composites was monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and the thermomechanical properties by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA). Additionally, mechanical properties such as impact strength, flexural strength andtensile strength, as well as the thermal stability and degradation kinetics of these composites were evaluated. It was found that the introduction of biochar into the epoxy matrix improved the mechanical and thermal properties of carbon fiber-reinforced composites.

Abstract:The use of biodegradable polymers as matrices in composites gives a wide range of applications, especially in niche areas. The assessment of the effect of the filler content on the change of mechanical properties makes it possible to optimize the composition for specific needs. Biochar was used as a filler in the studied composites with two different biodegradable blends as a matrix. Poly(1,4-butylene adipate-co-1,4-butylene terephthalate)/polylactide/biochar (PBAT/PLA/BC) and polylactide/poly[(R)-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-4-hydroxybutyrate]/biochar (PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB)/BC) composites with 0, 10, 15, 20 and 30 wt% of biochar underwent mechanical tests. The test results revealed a change in the properties of the composites related to the filler content. The results of the tensile test showed that increasing the biochar content increased the tensile modulus values by up to 100% for composites with 30 wt% of biochar, compared to unfilled matrices, and decreased the elongation associated with the breaking of PBAT/PLA and PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) matrix composites. The elongation values at break of PBAT/PLA and PLA/(3HB-co-4HB) composites with 30 wt% biochar were reduced by 50% and 65%, respectively, compared to the unfilled matrices. PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) matrix composites, in contrast to PBAT/PLA/BC, showed a decrease in tensile strength with the increases in filler content from 35.6 MPa for unfilled matrix to 27.1 MPa for PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB)/BC30 composites. An increase in filler content increased the brittleness of the composites regardless of the matrix used, as determined under the Charpy impact-test. This phenomenon was observed for all tested PLA/P(3HB-co-4HB) composites, for which the impact strength decreased from 4.47 kJ/m2 for the matrix to 1.61 kJ/m2 for the composite containing 30 wt% biochar. PBAT/PLA-based composites with 10 wt% of biochar showed slightly lower impact strength compared to the unfilled matrix, but composites with 30 wt% biochar showed 30% lower impact strength than PBAT/PLA. The complex viscosity value increased with increased filler content. For all composites tested on both polyester matrices, the viscosity decreased with increasing angular frequency.

Abstract:Biowaste utilization and management are of primary concern in the current scenario for a sustainable environment. One way to enable this is to replace commercial fillers with composite materials. In the present study, the fillers, that is, silica and biocarbon are extracted from rice husk and processed further as biofillers for processing composites. With inherent processing challenges involved in biofiller-based composites, this study investigated and compared the influence of dispersed silica and biocarbon particles independently on the mechanical and tribological properties of epoxy composites. The composites were fabricated by a hand lay-up process. The composites were fabricated with three different filler loadings each of silica and biocarbon separately (2, 4 and 6 wt%). The mechanical characterization results illustrate that tensile, flexural, compression, and erosion wear showed superior properties compared to neat epoxy. It is also evident that there was an enhancement of 19% in compressive strength in composites compared to neat epoxy at 2 wt% silica and biocarbon filler composites. The tensile strength increased by 2.6 times when compared to neat epoxy at 2 wt% silica filler addition. Alongside, erosion results confirm that the properties of pure epoxy change from semi-brittle to ductile due to the addition of silica and biocarbon fillers. This semi-brittle to ductile nature is important for marine applications as propellers are subject to extreme cold and warm temperatures with very little transition time, leading to ductile to brittle failure. Finally, it can be inferred that silica extracted from rice husk has versatile applications when compared to the carbon extract.
Influence of particle size and particle loading on mechanical and dielectric properties of biochar particulate-reinforced polymer nanocomposites

Abstract:ABSTRACT This research work emphasizes using pulverized biochar obtained by the pyrolysis of rice husk as a particulate reinforcement in unsaturated polyester matrix. The influence of particle size and particle loading on the mechanical and dielectric properties of particulate composites were investigated. The mean size of particles obtained through pulverizing using ball mill varied from 510 to 45 nm when milled for a duration ranging from 6 to 30 h. The particle loading in the composite varied from 0.5 to 2.5 wt%. The impact strength of the specimen having particle loading of 2.5 wt% with 45 nm particle size increased by 77.50%, and its dielectric constant increased by 7% when compared to that of cured pure resin; however, the tensile strength decreased. The biochar particles were subjected to X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and atomic force microscopy (AFM) analysis for characterization. Morphological studies were performed on tested samples by scanning electron microscope.

Abstract:In this experiment banana fly ash (BA) at 1, 3 and 4 wt% was mixed with the hybrid natural fiber combination of sisal/pineapple at 30, 40 and 50 wt%. Grey relational analysis (GRA) coupled with Taguchi method is followed to find the common optimal parameter combination that yields lesser specific wear rate (SWR) and coefficient of friction while testing the developed novel polymer matrix composites against steel ball. The multi-response optimization using GRA pointed out that minimal addition of BA filler (1 wt%), hybrid fibre content (30 wt%), higher sliding distance (1500 m) and lesser loading (5 N) results in good overall tribological properties. The addition of filler materials and hybrid fibres with the polymer matrix results in increased friction. The SEM results showed high adding up of fiber results in pull out of fibers in the epoxy resin resulting in high wear rate of natural composites. Good fiber/filler/epoxy bonding created a tribolayer surface in the combination and that reduces the surface contact between counter specimen and work piece with reduced SWR.

Abstract:In polymer composites, synthetic fibers are primarily used as a chief reinforcing material, with a wide range of applications, and are therefore essential to study. In the present work, we carried out the erosive wear of natural and synthetic fiber-based polymer composites. Glass fiber with jute and Grewia optiva fiber was reinforced in three different polymer resins: epoxy, vinyl ester and polyester. The hand lay-up method was used for the fabrication of composites. L16 orthogonal array of Taguchi method used to identify the most significant parameters (impact velocity, fiber content, and impingement angle) in the analysis of erosive wear. ANOVA analysis revealed that the most influential parameter was in the erosive wear analysis was impact velocity followed by fiber content and impingement angle. It was also observed that polyester-based composites exhibited the highest erosive wear followed by vinyl ester-based composites, and epoxy-based composites showed the lowest erosive wear. From the present study, it may be attributed that the low hardness of the polyester resulting in low resistance against the impact of erodent particles. The SEM analysis furthermore illustrates the mechanism took place during the wear examination of all three types of composites at highest fiber loading. A thorough assessment uncovers brittle fractures in certain regions, implying that a marginal amount of impact forces was also acting on the fabricated samples. The developed fiber-reinforced polymer sandwich composite materials possess excellent biocompatibility, desirable promising properties for prosthetic, orthopaedic, and bone-fracture implant uses.

Abstract:The use of natural fiber-reinforced composites is growing quickly due to its favorable environmental effects during manufacture and decomposition, high specific strength, abundance, and excellent mechanical and physical qualities. The purpose of this research is to ascertain the wear performance and dynamic mechanical behavior of epoxy matrix composites supplemented with banana fiber (Bf), khas khas grass fiber (Kkgf), and mesquite bark powder/filler (Mbp). In this investigation, hand lay-up is used to create epoxy-based composites with varying weight proportions of Bf/Kkgf/Mbp. The composite samples are then put through wear tests under various operating situations utilizing a pin-on-disc test rig in accordance with ASTM G 99-05 standards. The L 25 orthogonal array of Taguchi technique is used to analyze the significance and contributions of factors on wear behavior in addition for finding the optimal composite sample. A statistical plot is utilized to control the relationship among parameters. Confirmation studies were carried out based on the best combination, and the findings revealed a minimal difference of 3.76 × 10 −8 mm 3 /N mm. DMA is the most sensitive viscoelastic behavior of materials, particularly for detecting the glass transition region (Tg). It is also utilized to evaluate the modulus and damping characteristics of materials while they are deformed under dynamic stress.

Abstract:This study focuses on developing and examining the abrasive wear attributes of a unique epoxy composite reinforced with four fibers: rice straw (RS), coconut coir (CC), sugarcane bagasse (SB), jute fiber (JF), and one filler as neem wood powder (NWP). By altering the percentages of coconut coir, sugarcane bagasse, rice straw, and NWP, four types of composites A 1 , B 2 , C 3 , and D 4 were created. Using a pin-on-disk wear testing machine, dry sliding wear tests were carried out for each composition at various sliding velocities (1, 2, and 3 m/s) while applying standard loads of 5, 10, 30, and 50 N. The plots of the frictional force, friction coefficient and wear rate were made at all sliding velocities against the usual load and sliding distance. The outcome shows that the wear attributes of the composite improve as the amount of NWP enhances. When worn surfaces are observed under scanning electron microscopy (SEM) wear direction, broken particles, microfracture, voids, fiber matrix separation, and bonded matrix are all visible. Apart from being useful to the automobile industry, this particular type of composite material can be adapted to other sectors.

Abstract:The combination of conductive carbon together with magnetic particles is a consolidated strategy to produce cutting-edge fillers for the production of polymer composites able to shield against microwave radiation. In this work, we developed and characterized an iron-tailored biochar obtained from the pyrolysis of olive pruning which was added as filler for the preparation of epoxy composites. The biochar-based composites were obtained by keeping the filler concentration at 10 and 40 wt.%. An extensive characterization was carried out in order to assess the electrical and magnetic properties of the composites containing biochar and iron-tailored biochar. The highest DC electrical conductivity of 59 mS/m was observed in the 40 wt.% iron-tailored biochar-loaded composite, while the reduction of the filler loading led to a drastic reduction in conductivity: 60 μS/m in the 10 wt.%-loaded composite. Ferromagnetic behavior of composites containing iron-tailored biochar is visible in the emerging hysteretic behavior, with a magnetic signal increasing with the filler concentration. Finally, both the complex permittivity (ε’) and the AC conductivity (σ) are enhanced by increasing the BC filler amount in the matrix, regardless of the presence of iron.

Abstract:This study introduces an innovative approach to fabricate aluminum matrix composites strengthened with biochar, derived from renewable biomass sources. A systematic investigation of varying biochar weight percentages (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, and 10 wt%) reveals substantial improvements in mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Mechanical assessments, including compressive strength and hardness, demonstrate a significant enhancement in mechanical strength with biochar incorporation. In this study, it was discovered that the composite with 7.5 wt% biochar exhibits an optimal balance, displaying an 8.83% increase in compressive strength and a 15.15% rise in hardness compared to the base aluminum matrix. The study further evaluates corrosion behavior through electrochemical analyses and immersion tests in 3.5% NaCl corrosive environments, highlighting the superior corrosion resistance of biochar-reinforced composites. Corrosion rates decrease by 73% in the composite with 10 wt% biochar for the 24 h immersion time, affirming its protective barrier against corrosive agents. This research provides quantitative insights into tailoring mechanical and corrosion properties in aluminum matrix composites through biochar reinforcement, offering a promising avenue for sustainable material development. The resulting materials exhibit not only an 8.83% increase in mechanical strength but also a 73% reduction in corrosion rates, offering valuable uses in industries that need strong, eco-friendly solutions.

Abstract:This study investigates the impact of spent coffee biochar (Biochar) compared to carbon black (CB) as a partial replacement for carbon black in epoxidized natural rubber (ENR). Particle size and elemental analysis were used to characterize the biochar and CB. Cure characteristics, tensile, thermal, and morphological properties on the effect of biochar and CB as filler were studied. It was found that incorporating 10 phr of spent coffee biochar could improve the composites’ tensile properties and thermal performance compared to carbon black. However, the addition of biochar significantly affects the maximum torque compared to CB and delays the vulcanization time. SEM study shows that biochar has a strong effect on the morphology of composite films. The FTIR graph reveals no substantial difference between compounds with biochar and CB. According to the thermal calorimetric study, the thermal stability of ENR-Biochar is higher than that of ENR-CB. Additionally, these findings suggest that the utilization of spent coffee as a sustainable biochar could be further explored, but little has been done in epoxidized natural rubber (ENR).

Abstract:In this research work, designing and fabrication of hybrid epoxy polymer composite materials had been carried out. It consists of basalt fiber (constant fraction) and marble dust particulates (0–10 wt% @ step of 2.5%) ensuing five compositions namely, MBE-0, MBE-2.5, MBE-5, MBE-7.5, and MBE-10. The specimen’s undergone physical, mechanical, and thermo-mechanical characterizations followed by three-body abrasive wear performance evaluation. Parametric optimizations of the wear have been evaluated with the Taguchi technique. The performance data are used to rank the compositions using a hybrid AHP-VIKOR selection making tool. It has been observed that voids content improves with reinforcement up to 5 wt% marble dust reinforcement, thereafter, it deteriorates sharply. The mechanical properties with 5 wt% marble dust reinforcement found to be highest. The thermo-mechanical characteristics like modulus and damping improve with marble dust reinforcement and temperature. The Cole-Cole plots reveal the heterogeneity present in the composites. The Taguchi’s analysis reveals the order of operating factors influencing specific wear rate as abrading distance > normal load > reinforcement composition > abrasive size. The steady state-specific wear rate of the composites reveals decremented rate across the abrading distance range irrespective of reinforcement proportions and at any specific abrading distance the order it followed as MBE-5 < MBE-7.5 < MBE-2.5 < MBE-10 MBE-7.5 > MBE-2.5 > MBE-10 > MBE-0, which are in-line with subjective analysis.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. The current research work involves the fabrication and tribological properties analysis of constant basalt filler reinforced (30 wt %) bio-based polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) thermoplastic composites. Compression molding technique is used after an internal mixing process in order to produce composite samples. The physical and hardness properties have been evaluated for both neat polymers and composite samples. In order to study the coefficient of friction (COF) and specific wear rate (SWR) of PP and HDPE composite samples, the Taguchi and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) methodologies were applied. For PP samples, the optimum parameters in response to COF are found to be 0 wt% basalt (rank 3), 9 N load (rank 1), 200 r/min speed (rank 4), and 100 m distance (rank 2); for the SWR output, the optimum parameters are 30 wt% basalt (rank 1), 6 N load (rank 4), 100 r/min speed (rank 2), and 200 m distance (rank 3). For HDPE samples, the optimum parameters in response to COF are 0 wt% basalt (rank 1), 6 N load (rank 3), 100 r/min speed (rank 4), and 100 m distance (rank 2); for the SWR output, the optimum parameters are 30 wt% basalt (rank 1), 6 N load (rank 3), 100 r/min speed (rank 4), and 150 m distance (rank 2). Consistently, it has been shown that incorporating basalt fillers to PP and HDPE composites has more dramatically decreased SWR than COF. The depth of wear constantly rises according to increasing load, irrespective of the processing variables, as shown in 2D depth profiles. It is discovered that the confirmation tests carried out for the optimum parameters are within statistically acceptable bounds. The depth profile plots revealed that the worn track edges are found with polymer bumps because of deep grooves and softened polymer debris, which commonly observed more with HDPE samples due to low softening temperature. Moreover, the worn surfaces of the composites have plowed lines and cracks that are brought about by the micro-cutting and micro-plowing activity of the erosive asperities counterface. In addition to surface characteristics, the transfer films created during sliding also significantly influenced the mode of sample wear.
