Abstract:The world today has entered an era of globalization, and has achieved global connectivity in cultural, economic, technological and informative. With the rapid development of global trade, cross-cultural communication has become an irreversible trend in today's world. In such background, the translation of transnational advertising is not only crucial to the future development of enterprises, but also related to the effectiveness of cultural communication. In cross-cultural context, this article explores some luxury advertising translation from cases of success and failure from the perspective of application of “Adaptation Theory” in translation, and points out that the translator should make full use of the “Adaptation Theory” when translating advertisements. Luxury advertisement translation as a kind of cross-cultural communication activities, involves many factors such as regional culture, consumption psychology, aesthetic ideas, value orientation. Therefore, translators should take these factors into full consideration when translating, so as to make the translated text conform to consumers' psychology as far as possible, and achieve dynamic adaptation of cultural information . At the same time, it puts forward strategies for Chinese local products to help them "go out".

Abstract:As the process of economic globalization continues to advance, China has undergone earth-shaking changes. High-quality products and promotional materials are crucial for Chinese companies to go global and build their brands. The English translation of external promotional materials is crucial. However, some companies do not pay enough attention to their publicity, resulting in a low international status. This paper analyzes the Chinese-English translation of enterprise external publicity materials from the perspective of adaptation theory, thereby exploring the translation strategies adopted under the guidance of adaptation theory, hoping to provide some references for related translation practices in the future.

Abstract:Understanding differences in communication styles is becoming increasingly important in intercultural business communication as more and more countries are involved in doing business internationally and more and more people are doing business with mainland China. This article aims to compare the structural moves used in English and Chinese sales letters from social, intercultural and pragmatic perspectives. It has been argued that the study of text styles such as linearity and circularity in comparative rhetoric may not be sufficient to reflect the overall features of the genres involved. Therefore a holistic approach based on genre study and schema theory has been employed to explore the communicative purposes and various levels of the text. Hall's high- and low-context cultures and cross-cultural pragmatics have also been incorporated to enrich the genre approach. A corpus of 40 sales letters (20 in Chinese and 20 in English) was examined and it was found that Chinese sales letters share similar marketing strategies with English letters as the Chinese economy is becoming increasingly decentralized and privatized. Differences in communication patterns between these letters were identified, however, and shown to be largely due to a number of factors such as the specific values and beliefs of each culture and the different business practice in mainland China.

The pragmatic perspective specifies pragmatics as a general cognitive, social, and cultural perspective on linguistic phenomena in relation to their usage in forms of behavior. Adaptation theory describes and analyses language cognitively, socially and culturally. According to this perspective on language and adaptation theory, four aspects are of great importance: context, structure, dynamics and salience. Thus, this article has been intended to probe into the pragmatic perspective briefly.

Abstract:Based on Verschueren's Linguistic Adaptation Theory and a lot of translation examples of Chinese and English company profile,this paper analyzes the differences between Chinese company profile and English company profile and discusses the strategies of the Chinese-English translation.It points out the essence is the translator's language selection process and adaptation in the translation process.When translating Chinese into English,translators should adapt to the structure of the target language,cultural context and the specific pragmatic requirements to make the translation acceptable and comprehensible to the target language readers and to improve the translation quality.

Abstract:Trade between China and foreign countries is increasingly frequent. As the medium of communication, business letters are playing a more and more important role in trading. It is easy to find that vague language is widely used in business letters. The successful use of vague language requires the recipient to be able to infer the writer’s intention correctly. This paper takes business letters collected online and offline as corpus, and will analyze the vague language from two aspects, that is, lexical aspect and syntactic aspect. Based on the analysis finally summarize the three main pragmatic functions of vague language in business letters, namely intent expression, self-protection and politeness.
English Learning Adaption under Multi-media and Web-assisted Environment

Abstract:Learners’ adaption to web-assisted English learning environment is analyzed, mainly from five dimen-sions that include 33 sub-dimensions, i.e.learning motivation, web environment and resources, learning strate-gies, learning abilities and learning contents.The results indicate that learners’ motivation types are mainly in-strumental rather than cultural, interactive or integrative, with certain recreational tendency, that learners are a-daptive to web environment in terms of Internet skills and techniques but lack abilities to utilize English websites offered by English speaking countries and resources in English on websites related to their majors, that self-su-pervision and on-line study planning are both difficult for English learners and learners’ on-line interactive abili-ty is relatively poor, that most learners only practice reading and listening via Internet and are less adaptive to on-line oral or writing tasks.Based on the research, the advice and solutions to the above problems are given for the purpose of improving learners’ adaption under multi-media and web-assisted learning environment.

Abstract:Mental cultural vocabulary is a type of cultural vocabulary. This kind of vocabulary is a valuable carrier of the spiritual material culture of a nation or a country. The translation of these words can directly reflect the differences between different cultures, which plays an important role in cross-cultural communication. The translation strategies in dealing with mental cultural vocabulary translation is emphasized as it is a difficulty faced in translation practice. Based on the adaptation theory, this study analyzes the examples and translation from the perspective of dynamic adaptation as well as explains the adaptation at all levels in translation practice.

Abstract:Chinese business education differs from British business education in many respects. On the whole, it focuses on the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, whereas British business education places far more emphasis on soft management skills and team-work. This paper examines a split-site business degree program offered by a Chinese international school and a British business school, and explores the attitudes and expectations of the Chinese participants and their Chinese and British lecturers from an “English for specific purposes” perspective. The study conducted classroom observation, semi-structured interviews, and a questionaire survey, and identifies areas of difficulty for Chinese business students in the UK, in particular regarding their beliefs about teacher and student roles, their learning priorities and learning strategies, and their “goal-oriented” approach to discussion, which is at odds with the more collaborative and exploratory Western discussion strategies. The findings have implications for pre-sessional and in-sessional English course design, the management of split-site business degree programs, the teaching of Chinese students, and the enhancement of learning experiences generally in international business programs.
