Abstract:As an important part of business correspondence in international trading activities,the claim letter undoubtedly plays a key role in the foreign trading.It is essentially a kind of economic activity through language.Therefore,an effective claim letter depends on various linguistic realizations and the communicative purpose of different speech act has to be achieved through different linguistic strategies.Based on the speech act theory of Austin and Searle, the present paper supplies a brief introduction to the types and functions of claim letters and an analysis of linguistic features of different speech acts.It attempts to investigate how various syntactical and lexical means are used effectively in the writing of English claim letters to achieve the communicative purpose,lodging a claim courteously,and in turn to promote the foreign trading as expected.

Abstract:Understanding differences in communication styles is becoming increasingly important in intercultural business communication as more and more countries are involved in doing business internationally and more and more people are doing business with mainland China. This article aims to compare the structural moves used in English and Chinese sales letters from social, intercultural and pragmatic perspectives. It has been argued that the study of text styles such as linearity and circularity in comparative rhetoric may not be sufficient to reflect the overall features of the genres involved. Therefore a holistic approach based on genre study and schema theory has been employed to explore the communicative purposes and various levels of the text. Hall's high- and low-context cultures and cross-cultural pragmatics have also been incorporated to enrich the genre approach. A corpus of 40 sales letters (20 in Chinese and 20 in English) was examined and it was found that Chinese sales letters share similar marketing strategies with English letters as the Chinese economy is becoming increasingly decentralized and privatized. Differences in communication patterns between these letters were identified, however, and shown to be largely due to a number of factors such as the specific values and beliefs of each culture and the different business practice in mainland China.

Abstract:Trade between China and foreign countries is increasingly frequent. As the medium of communication, business letters are playing a more and more important role in trading. It is easy to find that vague language is widely used in business letters. The successful use of vague language requires the recipient to be able to infer the writer’s intention correctly. This paper takes business letters collected online and offline as corpus, and will analyze the vague language from two aspects, that is, lexical aspect and syntactic aspect. Based on the analysis finally summarize the three main pragmatic functions of vague language in business letters, namely intent expression, self-protection and politeness.

Abstract:The research is dedicated to the reflection of speech strategies used in English discourse. The English language of business communication, which has become global in recent decades due to the internationalization of the business community and the steady growth of international business contacts, serves as a tool for intercultural communication. Target settings and typical strategic models of language behavior of interacting parties together with specific features of the functional space of English business discourse determine its generally regulated (vocabulary, pragmatics, stylistics), conventional nature, which implies the existence of a well-established communicative norm and orders. Formal business discourse is characterized by strict accuracy, objectivity, specificity, conciseness, lack of imagery and emotionality, and the choice of means for it will be determined by the same features. In business discourse, as well as the types of institutional type, we can name a number of such properties as: specific strategies, values and specific characteristics of texts. Discursive action is verbalized in a certain type of text, the genre specificity of which is determined by the type of discourse (eg, employment, personnel, operational interaction), institutional and professional sphere of its functioning (eg, higher education). Compositional-thematic, visual-graphic and stylistic features of the text (ie everything that is usually meant by the genre of the text) are also largely due to the typological characteristics of the discourse. In real discursive practice, it is difficult to distinguish between the concepts of genre, discursive event, genre of text and type of text. The strategy of communication is implemented in language tactics – language techniques that allow you to achieve goals in a particular situation.

Incorporating Textual Analysis for Genre Measurement of Narrative Discourse in Business English

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, business English narrative genre research has been characterized by ambiguous concepts, insufficient theoretical basis, and single-genre features, which have weakened the reliability of research conclusions. Accordingly, this paper examines the representative genre of business English narrative, “management discussion and analysis report”, and explores its genre characteristics and its mapping relationship with corporate performance. The measurement framework is based on the discourse level, genre level, professional practice level, and professional culture level and builds a textual analysis path. In order to observe the lexico-grammatical features highlighted in the four levels of discourse, this paper designs the linguistic feature extraction process and the keyword information extraction method involved in the process. This paper improves the LDA model by introducing the emotional information factor, and improves the keyword extraction algorithm in the model based on information theory. According to the designed method for extracting linguistic features, the representative genre text is analyzed in terms of intonation. Through empirical analysis, it is found that the positive tone and negative tone of the retrospective part of the text of the representative genre are correlated with the current year’s performance of the enterprise at a significant level of 1%, and the positive tone is positively correlated with the current year’s performance, while the negative tone is negatively correlated with the current year’s performance. The positive and negative tone of the outlook texts is not significantly related to the performance of enterprises in the next year. The association of genre characteristics with the current year’s performance of the enterprise is evident but not with the next year’s performance. This paper’s text analysis path can be explored in detail for business English narrative discourse genre measures.
Understanding Students’ Approach to Discipline-Specificity when Learning EAP Writing: A Case Study in an Academic English for Business Class

Abstract:While the teaching of discipline-specific writing has drawn increasing attention in recent EAP writing research, much remains to be investigated regarding what constitutes teaching specificity. This study, adopting a learner-focused perspective, examines how students respond to discipline-specificity when learning in an EAP writing class and what the relationship is between learning the writing of disciplines and general academic writing. It used an in-depth qualitative approach and documented three focal students’ learning trajectories of a business-specific genre – case analysis – in an Academic English for Business course at a Chinese university, drawing on data from interviews, the students’ course reflections, and their multiple drafts of case analysis texts. It was found that the students grasped the genre-specific move structure and the specialized vocabulary of case analysis writing, and they also sharpened their academic skills for business study, including assessing information, applying disciplinary knowledge, and making evaluative analysis. However, the students’ learning of case analysis was affected by problems regarding their general academic writing skills, including argumentation and the formality and clarity of language in the academic written register. The issues of learning disciplinespecific writing in combination with disciplinary ways of knowing and doing, and the interplay between learning discipline-specific and general academic writing are discussed. Pedagogical implications for teaching specificity in EAP writing classes are also suggested.

Abstract:Under the promotion of economic globalization, China's trade with other countries has also reached a historical peak. Business English letter as a medium to convey business information, its role should not be underestimated. A suitable English business letter can not only establish a good corporate image, but also promote the success of cooperation. Politeness principle is one of the principles that must be observed when writing business English letters. It is embodied in all kinds of letters. When people need to write specific business English letters, they must choose proper politeness principles according to business type and background. This paper analyzes different transmitting ways of positive information and negative information in English business letters and the embodiment of politeness principle. This study also discusses the use of politeness principle and its influencing factors in different contexts. Based on Leach's politeness principle, this paper makes a detailed analysis of different English business letters and probes into the specific use of politeness principle in different types of letters.This study applies the method from special to general, from point to surface to analyze, from analyzing an English business letter to a class of business English letters, and finds that the politeness principle has its corresponding embodiment in both positive and negative information transmission.

Interpersonal Meta function Analysis of Editorial Discourse in Business-Related Issues Using English Systemic Linguistics

Abstract:This study examines Mood, Modality, and Attitude as a part of Appraisal theory in the Editorial News of the Sydney Morning Herald Interpersonal Meta function Analysis. Three methods were used, including (1) Indicative (Declarative and Interrogative) mood, (2) Modalization (Indicative Type), Probability (may be) and Usuality (“sometimes”), and (3) Attitude subsystem as part of Appraisal theory resources with three clauses, including Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation. The study aims to investigate the highest Interpersonal Meta function in terms of Mood, Modality, and Attitude in Editorial Discourse in Business-Related Issues. A sample of ten editorial discourses in business-related issues from The Sydney Morning Herald was used to examine Mood, Modality, and Attitude as part of Appraisal theory. The adopted framework in this research is interpersonal Meta function consisting of Mood, Modality, and Attitude as part of Appraisal theory. The results showed that more interrogative clauses were used, specifically 108 of 183 (59.02%) than declarative 75 of 183 (40.98%). Additionally, there were more probability positive clauses 61 of 73 (83.56%) than negative 7 of 73 (9.59%) and usuality 5 of 73 (6.85%). Similarly, appreciation clauses were used more frequently, specifically 19 of 46 (41.30%) than Judgment 14 of 46 (30.43%) and Affect 13 of 46 (28.26%). The limitation for this research is that it examined only 10 business-related editorials, which means it may not be too comprehensive. However, the information in this research can be used for educational development in Interpersonal Meta function Analysis of Editorial Discourse in Business-Related Issues Using English Systemic Linguistics. The author recommends that the future research should add more business-related editorial cases to incorporate Interpersonal Meta function, which consists of Mood, Modality, and Appraisal system as a whole by adding graduation, engagement in order to be more complete, not only Attitude as a part of Appraisal theory.

An analysis of business English coursebooks from an ELF perspective

Abstract:Abstract This study analysed a series of business English coursebooks published and used in the Chinese context from an English as a lingua franca (ELF) perspective. The analysis was conducted from four aspects: language ownership, language exposure, language activities, and cultural representations. These address four key issues in the debate over the practicality of ELF-informed materials. The findings show an orientation towards native English speakers as representatives of English users, a dominance of native-speaker Standard English in language exposure, a lack of ELF-informed activities, and a limited representation of Chinese culture. This article concludes that the coursebooks merely introduce ELF as a cultural and linguistic phenomenon. Despite some attempts to present the role of ELF in the global business community, there is a paucity of ELF exposure and ELF-informed activities. The implications of these findings for the selection and evaluation of ELF-informed materials are discussed.

Abstract:This paper aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the transformational changes observed in English business discourse over time. Employing cutting-edge methodologies such as functional linguistics, linguosynergetics, and diachronic analysis, the authors delve into the evolutionary dynamics of business communication, examining the extralinguistic factors that drive the inner discursive mechanisms of self-regulation and modification of the functional field. By highlighting these factors, the study sheds light on the complex interplay between language, society, and cognition in shaping business communication. Drawing on a rich corpus of oral and written English business discourse spanning from the late 19th century to the present day, the research reveals that the rise of new tendencies in social and political life, coupled with the historical development of British and American societies, have sparked changes in the cognitive models of structuring speech behavior in business verbal interaction. Consequently, new trends have emerged, including simplification, deregulation, deviation from communicative norms of standardized Business English, and popularization of unconventional, non-standard business rhetoric.

Abstract:The study of rhetorical devices and how corporate leaders organise the texts and convey attitudes to stakeholders in corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports has become an important research area in recent years. A relatively neglected means of rhetorical expressions, however, is metadiscursive nouns. This study investigates the use of metadiscursive nouns in a 0.5-million-word self-built corpus of the US and Chinese CEO letters in CSR reports to reveal cross-cultural variations. The results show that the interactive metadiscursive nouns are twice as frequent in the US discourse as in the Chinese discourse, demonstrating greater efforts invested in cohesion by the US companies. This difference can be attributed to the writer-responsible rhetoric in the West and the reader-responsible conventions in China. The interactional metadiscursive nouns in the US discourse occur twice as frequently as in the Chinese counterpart, suggesting greater exertion of nominal stance by the US companies. This discrepancy mainly arises from the high- and low-context variations between the US and China. This study sheds new insights on metadiscursive nouns as rhetorical resources in cross-cultural CSR communication and provides implications for ESP practitioners to use them as a means of conceptualising writer–reader interaction in corporate communication.
