Abstract:With the economic globalization developing rapidly , connections between China and other countries are becoming closer and closer.Therefore, the importance of business English translation has been increasing .Based on the Functional Equiva-lence Theory, this paper tries to analyze the linguistic functions and text features of business English letters , discussing the applica-tion of the theory to the translation of business English letters by analyzing corresponding examples , and thus revealing the signifi-cance of the theory in business English letters translation .

Abstract:With the continuous acceleration of the globalization process and the continuous improvement of China’s international status, an open China holding high the banner of win-win cooperation is actively participating in international economic and trade activities. Business contracts provide guarantees for maintaining business relationships and conducting business activities. Therefore, drafting, negotiating and signing commercial contracts have become an indispensable link. English business contracts have their own unique stylistic characteristics - contract body, which belongs to legal texts. Accurate translation of business contracts is the key to reducing trade risks, reducing legal disputes, and ensuring that property and other interests are not infringed. In short, the translator needs to consider the problem mainly from the perspective of communicative function in the translation process. From the perspective of “functional parity” translation theory, this thesis analyzes the linguistic characteristics of English-Chinese business contracts, combines the examples of English business contract Chinese translation, discusses the guiding significance and specific application of “functional parity” translation theory in business contract translation activities, and on this basis, puts forward translation strategies of English business contract translation, in order to provide reference for the accuracy and professionalism of English business contract translation.

Abstract:With the increasing development of our country and the world, the importance of English as an international language is self-evident. But we have difficulty in English translation, especially the vocabulary and translation of business English letters, not only because we have different living habits but also because we have different ways of speaking. Based on the research of functional equivalence theory and the calculation of a genetic algorithm, the vocabulary and translation of business English letters will be better improved. This can help us communicate better with each other and learn from the advanced Western experience in China. Through the study of the algorithm, the computational advantages of the algorithm are proved. The study of this English translation model will further improve the progress and promotion of existing translation technology.

Brief Discussion of the Translation of International Business Contracts

Abstract:In the activities of international business trade, business contract has become an important legal document. Nowadays, business English has become not only a necessary tool for communication, but also the base of English business contracts. More and more English-learners and law-majors hope they can know something about English business contracts so as to understand them correctly, translate them exactly and make them perfectly. China’s entering the WTO enhances their desire to use English to solve the problems of business contracts. There are many different kinds of international business contracts, whose contents are diversified and complicated. In international trade, translation is compulsory since contracts usually need two versions: English and Chinese. The international business contract has its own characters, such as proper arrangement, standardization and specialty. All these make the translation of them very difficult and thus demand good skills to ensure a high quality. This article analyzes the preciseness, strictness and standardization of business contracts and explores the skills of translating them by citing many examples. It also points out some common translation errors, the reasons and the methods to correct the errors. Finally some advice is given to call readers attention to the problems in translation.

Abstract:This study explores the translation of business English contracts from English to Chinese from the perspective of functional equivalence. The functional equivalence theory involves three aspects of functional equivalence: lexical equivalence, sentential equivalence, and textual equivalence. As far as translation is concerned, translators adopt different translation techniques for different types of texts, striving to achieve equivalence in lexical, sentential, and textual functions. Therefore, translators are to recognize the different characteristics of business English contracts and highlight English translation styles and characteristics with the help of the functional equivalence theory.

Abstract:Abstract:With China’s Reform and Opening-up Policy, especially her entrance into WTO, China’s international trades are mushrooming. As is known to all, most contracts of international trades are written in English which have intensely accurate vocabularies, well-structured organization and standardized forms. This paper analyzes international business contracts’ stylistic features such as lexical features, use of terminology, use of archaic words, juxtaposition of synonyms, frequent use of long sentences and passive tenses. Then the author tries to offer E-C translation skills correspondingly guided by Nida’s functional equivalence theory. It is believed that with a good understanding of the source text and command of both languages as well as related knowledge, E-C functional equivalence translation of IBC can be realized effectively.

Abstract:Since the reform and opening up policy was adopted, Chinese economy has been keeping on developing with high speed, so as to its international trade. Therefore, English business contracts are widely used in the foreign economic and trade activities. However, we also find that there are still many foreign-related economic disputes which mainly caused by the ambiguity of translation happening in these trades. Due to the unclear rules of the parties’ obligations and rights, the improper translation of the contract, the meaning vague and the loose broad, the parties are tracked in this situation where any part of them could intentionally or unintentionally exploited a contractual loophole to avoid responsibility and obligation, which would lead to a dispute. The distortion of translation can lead to the fuzziness and uncertainty of contract which can be easily exploited by commercial fraud to evade responsibility; this situation is happened in reality and practice which has negative impact on foreign relations and trade. In order to make the business activities carried out more effectively, this article will discuss it mainly from the perspective of lexical characteristics and translation principal of business contract in order to make the translation be more accurate to benefit international business trade.

Abstract:The paper explores problems in translated legal academic writings and discusses solutions for a better quality of translation in legal academic writings by taking translated legal academic papers published on China Legal Science (English Edition) as subjects. There are two fundamental reasons which may account for most problems identified in this study: 1) there are some different linguistic features of English and Chinese that make literal translation unsatisfactory; and 2) there are some personal language habits that result in substandard wordings in terms of academic writing and legal language. This article, while offering suggestions for unified standards of Chinese-to-English translation in legal academic writings, aims to provide a training framework for translators from the perspective of functional approach on the basis of the identified problems. The paper also argues that functional approaches can merit legal translation and has pedagogical implications for translation training.
