Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fibre and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped OAM laser operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated laser is captured, and its OAM mode purity characterized. The electrically pumped OAM laser eliminates the external laser required by silicon- or silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and quantum domain.

Abstract:In a subject of ‘optical angular momentum (OAM) and optical vortex’, a twisted light (also referred to as a ‘spiralling optical field’) possesses a helical wavefront. Recently, a new advance in the twisted light is Rego et al's discovery of self-torque effect that can cause an intrinsic angular acceleration (DOI:10.1126/science.aaw9486). Such a self-torque effect gives rise to a time-varying optical orbital angular momentum. Then we believe that the time-dependent OAM of this vortex laser beam can lead to non-trivial evolution of the OAM state vector. It is expected that the information on the self-torque of a twisted optical field might be reflected in an extra phase shift and, based on this, we study the possible precession and nutation evolution of a quantized optical orbital angular momentum in such a twisted light. The relevant effects such as non-cyclic non-adiabatic ‘geometric’ phase and dynamical phase due to the angular momentum precession and nutation in the vortex beam are also included. An effective Hamiltonian characterizing the optical vortex precession and nutation is constructed and the time-dependent wave equation is solved. The result obtained in this paper could be utilized in treating the polarization evolution and possible mechanical (force) effect of twisted optical fields that can exhibit the self-torque phenomenon.
Large-angle twisted photonic crystal semiconductor nanolasers with ultra-low thresholds operating in the C-band

Abstract:Nanolasers, characterized by enhanced optical localization at subwavelength scale, have emerged as promising coherent light sources for ultra-compact, high-speed and energy-efficient photonic integrated circuits. Twisted photonic crystal nanocavity, constructed by stacking two layers of photonic crystal structure with a specified rotation angle, enables strong light confinement with an ultra-small mode volume and an extremely high quality factor. The twisted angle can be randomly selected, providing the possibility of actively tuning the resonant wavelength and optical mode distribution within a nanoscale twisted cavity. Here, we demonstrate large-angle twisted single-mode photonic crystal nanolasers operating in the C-band with an exceptionally ultra-compact footprint of approximately 25 $\mu m^2$ and an ultra-small mode volume of 0.47 $(\lambda/n)^3$. The reported twisted photonic crystal nanolasers are optically pumped at room temperature with an ultra-low threshold of $\sim$ 1.25 $kW/cm^2$. Our work provides a prospective method for easily constructing robust nanolasers by twisting angles, and paves the way for achieving high-performance nanoscale coherent light sources for densely integrated photonic chips.

On-chip twisted hollow-core light cages: enhancing planar photonics with 3D nanoprinting

Abstract:Twisted optical fibers are a promising platform for manipulating circularly polarized light and orbital angular momentum beams for applications such as nonlinear frequency conversion, optical communication, or chiral sensing. However, integration into chip-scale technology is challenging because twisted fibers are incompatible with planar photonics and the achieved twist rates are limited. Here, we address these challenges by introducing the concept of 3D-nanoprinted on-chip twisted hollow-core light cages. We show theoretically and experimentally that geometrical twisting of light cages forces the fundamental core mode of a given handedness to couple with selected higher-order core modes, resulting in strong circular dichroism (CD). These chiral resonances result from the angular momentum harmonics of the fundamental mode, allowing us to predict their spectral locations and the occurrence of circular birefringence. Twisted light cages enable very high twist rates and CD, exceeding those of twisted hollow-core fibers by more than two orders of magnitude (twist period: 90 $\mu$m, CD: 0.8 dB/mm). Moreover, the unique cage design provides lateral access to the central core region, enabling future applications in chiral spectroscopy. Therefore, the presented concept opens a path for translating twisted fiber research to on-chip technology, resulting in a new platform for integrated chiral photonics.

Abstract:Twisted light, an unbounded set of helical spatial modes carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), offers not only fundamental new insights into structured light-matter interactions, but also a new degree of freedom to boost optical and quantum information capacity. However, current OAM experiments still rely on bulky, expensive, and slow-response diffractive or refractive optical elements, hindering today's OAM systems to be largely deployed. In the last decade, nanophotonics has transformed the photonic design and unveiled a diverse range of compact and multifunctional nanophotonic devices harnessing the generation and detection of OAM modes. Recent metasurface devices developed for OAM generation in both real and momentum space, presenting design principle and exemplary devices, are summarized. Moreover, recent development of whispering-gallery-mode-based passive and tunable microcavities, capable of extracting degenerate OAM modes for on-chip vortex emission and lasing, is summarized. In addition, the design principle of different plasmonic devices and photodetectors recently developed for on-chip OAM detection is discussed. Current challenges faced by the nanophotonic field for twisted-light manipulation and future advances to meet these challenges are further discussed. It is believed that twisted-light manipulation in nanophotonics will continue to make significant impact on future development of ultracompact, ultrahigh-capacity, and ultrahigh-speed OAM systems-on-a-chip.

Abstract:Twisted light, with spatially varying phase or polarization, has given rise to various applications, such as micro-particle manipulation, optical communication, and quantum information processing. In recent decades, to bring these applications into reality, various configurations such as conventional spiral phase plates, computer-generated holograms, metasurface-based setups, and on-chip devices have been explored for twisted light generation. In this Perspective, we focus on recent progress in generation twisted light from typical on-chip devices such as waveguides, plasmonic nanoslits, whispering gallery mode configurations, and meta-gratings. We aim at highlighting the key research advances and technical challenges in on-chip twisted light generation. Finally, we outlook the likely future trend of this emerging research field.

Abstract:A Twist of Light The angular momentum of photons can be used to encode and transmit information. Cai et al. (p. 363 ) developed a method for generating and emitting controllable orbital angular momentum states of light from a reconfigurable and scalable silicon photonic chip. Using micro-ring resonators embedded with angular gratings allowed the imprinting of optical angular momentum on the light propagating in the whispering gallery modes of the resonator. The method may enable large-scale integration of optical vortex emitters on complementary metal-oxide–semiconductor-compatible silicon chips.

On-chip optical twisted bilayer photonic crystal

Abstract:Recently, moiré engineering has been extensively employed for creating and studying novel electronic materials in two dimensions. However, its application in nanophotonic systems has not been widely explored so far. Here, we demonstrate that twisted bilayer photonic crystals provide a new photonic platform with twist-angle-tunable optical dispersion. Compared to twisted two-dimensional materials, twisted bilayer photonic crystals host a rich set of physics and provide a much larger number of degrees of freedom choice of material, lattice symmetry, feature size, twist angle, and interlayer gap, which promises an unprecedented toolbox for tailoring optical properties. We directly visualize the dispersion throughout the optical frequency range and show that the measured optical response is in good quantitative agreement with numerical and analytical results. Our results reveal a highly tunable band structure of twisted bilayer photonic crystals due to moiré scattering. This work opens the door to exploring unconventional physics and novel applications in photonics.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) from lasers holds promise for compact, at-source solutions for applications ranging from imaging to communications. However, conjugate symmetry between circular spin and opposite helicity OAM states (±ℓ) from conventional spin–orbit approaches has meant that complete control of light's angular momentum from lasers has remained elusive. Here, we report a metasurface-enhanced laser that overcomes this limitation. We demonstrate new high-purity OAM states with quantum numbers reaching ℓ = 100 and non-symmetric vector vortex beams that lase simultaneously on independent OAM states as much as Δℓ = 90 apart, an extreme violation of previous symmetric spin–orbit lasing devices. Our laser conveniently outputs in the visible, producing new OAM states of light as well as all previously reported OAM modes from lasers, offering a compact and power-scalable source that harnesses intracavity structured matter for the creation of arbitrary chiral states of structured light.

Abstract:Integrated photonics is a remarkable platform for scalable classical and quantum light-based information processing. However, polarization manipulation on a chip despite of its fundamental significance in information processing remains elusive. Polarization manipulation capabilities have been recently demonstrated in femtosecond laser-inscribed twisted waveguides, although the systematic theoretical description of polarization manipulation has not been established for this architecture. In this work we develop a rigorous theory of a twisted waveguide unveiling its eigenmodes and transmission matrix in the closed form. Utilizing the developed theory, we demonstrate that twisted waveguides can realize virtually arbitrary polarization transformations while satisfying reasonable design constraints. This fact combined with low cost and ease of prototyping of laser inscribed photonic integrated circuits allows us to suggest twisted waveguide as a robust building block for on-chip polarization-encoded information processing.

Abstract:In addition to a plethora of emergent phenomena, the spatial topology of optical vortices enables an array of applications spanning communications to quantum photonics. Nonlinear optics is essential in this context, providing access to an infinitely large set of quantum states associated with the orbital angular momentum of light. Nevertheless, the realization of such processes have failed to keep pace with the ever-growing need to shrink the fundamental length-scale of photonic technologies to the nanometer regime6. Here, we push the boundaries of vortex nonlinear optics to the ultimate limits of material dimensionality. By exploiting second and third-order frequency-mixing processes in semiconducting monolayers, we demonstrate the independent manipulation of the wavelength, orbital angular momentum, and spatial distribution of vortex light-fields. Due to the atomically-thin nature of the host quantum material, this control spans a broad spectral bandwidth in a highly-integrable platform, unconstrained by the traditional limits of bulk nonlinear optical materials. Our work heralds a new avenue for ultra-compact and scalable hybrid nanotechnologies empowered by twisted nonlinear light-matter interactions in van der Waals quantum nanomaterials.

Optically generated reconfigurable photonic structures of elastic quasiparticles in frustrated cholesteric liquid crystals

Abstract:We describe laser-induced two-dimensional periodic photonic structures formed by localized particle-like excitations in an untwisted confined cholesteric liquid crystal. The individual particle-like excitations (dubbed "Torons") contain three-dimensional twist of the liquid crystal director matched to the uniform background director field by topological point defects. Using both single-beam-steering and holographic pattern generation approaches, the periodic crystal lattices are tailored by tuning their periodicity, reorienting their crystallographic axes, and introducing defects. Moreover, these lattices can be dynamically reconfigurable: generated, modified, erased and then recreated, depending on the needs of a particular photonic application. This robust control is performed by tightly focused laser beams of power 10-100 mW and by low-frequency electric fields at voltages ~10 V applied to the transparent electrodes.
On-chip Steering of Entangled Photons in Nonlinear Photonic Crystals.

Abstract:One promising technique for working toward practical photonic quantum technologies is to implement multiple operations on a monolithic chip, thereby improving stability, scalability and miniaturization. The on-chip spatial control of entangled photons will certainly benefit numerous applications, including quantum imaging, quantum lithography, quantum metrology and quantum computation. However, external optical elements are usually required to spatially control the entangled photons. Here we present the first experimental demonstration of on-chip spatial control of entangled photons, based on a domain-engineered nonlinear photonic crystal. We manipulate the entangled photons using the inherent properties of the crystal during the parametric downconversion, demonstrating two-photon focusing and beam-splitting from a periodically poled lithium tantalate crystal with a parabolic phase profile. These experimental results indicate that versatile and precise spatial control of entangled photons is achievable. Because they may be operated independent of any bulk optical elements, domain-engineered nonlinear photonic crystals may prove to be a valuable ingredient in on-chip integrated quantum optics.

Abstract:Circularly‐polarized light is essential for chiral‐photonic applications. However, it is difficult to scale down the conventional setup for generating such lights. In this work, compact circularly‐polarized lasers are demonstrated by combining the vertical radiations from two phase‐shifted light sources. Free from elements incompatible with integrated photonic circuits, the device naturally fits into photonic chips. Compact circularly‐polarized (CP) light sources are important for chirality‐based applications at the chip level. The CP light is conventionally generated by passing the linearly‐polarized (LP) one through quarter wave plates which are too thick for packed integrations. In this work, the in‐plane submicron phase shifter substitutes the quarter‐wave plate in the creation of CP light. After the lasing field of a holed microdisk is coupled into the nearby waveguide and phase shifter, it is guided into two grating couplers that output orthogonally LP waves vertically. The two LP waves are phase‐shifted by π/2 and combine into the coherent CP radiation in the far‐field zone. Experimentally, the fabricated devices exhibit a degree of circular polarization as high as 74%. This device scheme is simple and effective in that it relies on no extrinsic materials, large‐area auxiliary structures, or specialized operation conditions critical for CP radiation. The compatibility issues for integrated photonic systems are of less concern in such schemes.

Abstract:The assembling of twisted stacks of van der Waals (vdW) materials had led to the discovery of a profusion of remarkable physical phenomena in recent years, as it provides a means to accurately control and harness electronic band structures. This has given birth to the so-called field of twistronics. An analogous concept has been developed for highly confined polaritons, or nanolight, in twisted bilayers of strongly anisotropic vdW materials, extending the field to the twistoptics realm. In this case, the emergence of a topological transition of the polaritonic dispersion at a given twist angle (photonic magic angle) results in the propagation of nanolight along one specific direction (canalization regime), holding promises for unprecedented control of the flow of energy at the nanoscale. However, there is a fundamental limitation in twistoptics that critically impedes such control: there is only one photonic magic angle (and thus canalization direction) in a twisted bilayer and it is fixed for each incident frequency. Here, we overcome this limitation by demonstrating the existence of multiple spectrally robust photonic magic angles in reconfigurable twisted vdW trilayers. As a result, we show that canalization of nanolight can be programmed at will along any desired in-plane direction in a single device, and, importantly, within broad spectral ranges of up to 70 cm-1. Our findings lay the foundation for robust and widely tunable twistoptics, opening the door for applications in nanophotonics where on-demand control of energy at the nanoscale is crucial, such as thermal management, nanoimaging or entanglement of quantum emitters.

Abstract:Abstract Light carrying orbital angular momentum constitutes an important resource for both classical and quantum information technologies. Its inherently unbounded nature can be exploited to generate high-dimensional quantum states or for channel multiplexing in classical and quantum communication in order to significantly boost the data capacity and the secret key rate, respectively. While the big potentials of light owning orbital angular momentum have been widely ascertained, its technological deployment is still limited by the difficulties deriving from the fabrication of integrated and scalable photonic devices able to generate and manipulate it. Here, we present a photonic integrated chip able to excite orbital angular momentum modes in an 800 m long ring-core fiber, allowing us to perform parallel quantum key distribution using two and three different modes simultaneously. The experiment sets the first steps towards quantum orbital angular momentum division multiplexing enabled by a compact and light-weight silicon chip, and further pushes the development of integrated scalable devices supporting orbital angular momentum modes.

Photonic Lattice-Like Waveguides in Glass Directly Written by Femtosecond Laser for On-Chip Mode Conversion

Abstract:We report on a conceptually new type of waveguide in glass by femtosecond laser direct writing, namely, photonic latticelike waveguide [PLLW). The PLLW’s core consists of well-distributed and densified tracks with a sub-micron size of 0.62 μm in width. Specifically, a PLLW inscribed as hexagonal-shape input with a ring-shape output side was implemented to converse Gaussian mode to doughnut-like mode, and high conversion efficiency was obtained with a low insertion loss of 1.65 d B at 976 nm. This work provides a new freedom for design and fabrication of the refractive index profile of waveguides with sub-micron resolution and broadens the functionalities and application scenarios of femtosecond laser direct-writing waveguides in future 3 D integrated photonic systems.

Abstract:The orthogonality among optical beams with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes presents a new perspective as independent data-carrying channels for multiplexing and demultiplexing. In particular, the theoretically infinite topological charge of OAM beam promises the unbounded capacity in communication systems. As a key part for the advancement of OAM technologies, OAM source has attracted considerable interest and experienced a rapid development. Nevertheless, conventional approaches to create OAM modes mainly rely on the use of bulky optical devices and external laser source, preventing their implementation into a miniaturized system. As a contrast, on-chip generation of OAM beams with a built-in source stands out with several advantages, including small footprint, compactness, portability, and high-power efficiency. In this work, a versatile approach to directly produce OAM modes with on-demand characteristics on a chip is demonstrated. Featuring the judicious combination of the emerging dielectric metasurface with the standard vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) platform, the approach represents a feasible solution to the wide implementation of wafer-level OAM emitters for optoelectronic integrations.
