Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:A microscale vortex laser is a new type of coherent light source with small footprint that can directly generate vector vortex beams. However, a microscale laser with controlled topological charge, which is crucial for virtually any of its application, is still unrevealed. Here we present a microscale vortex laser with controlled topological charge. The vortex laser eigenmode was synthesized in a metamaterial engineered non-Hermitian micro-ring cavity system at exceptional point. We also show that the vortex laser cavity can operate at exceptional point stably to lase under optical pumping. The microscale vortex laser with controlled topological charge can serve as a unique and general building block for nextgeneration photonic integrated circuits and coherent vortex beam sources. The method we used here can be employed to generate lasing eigenmode with other complex functionalities.

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fibre and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped OAM laser operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated laser is captured, and its OAM mode purity characterized. The electrically pumped OAM laser eliminates the external laser required by silicon- or silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and quantum domain.

Abstract:Optical vortex beams (VBs), a structured light possessing helical phase—front and carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), have recently emerged as a promising perspective in optical manipulation, optical tweezer and optical communication. In this contribution, by taking advantage of the strong light–matter interaction, a nonlinear diffraction method is demonstrated to identify OAM modes. The nonlinear diffraction device (NDD) composed of WS2 nanosheets is employed to excite the optical Kerr nonlinear effect. Owing to the large Kerr coefficient of layered WS2, the spatial phase shift of VBs are readily regulated, resulting in controllable diffraction rings and tails, from which we can directly identify the magnitude and signs of OAM modes. The incident light intensity also expands the intensity distribution because the enhanced nonlinear phase shift will enlarge the diffraction rings, which provides an efficient way to identify the OAM and intensity of VBs simultaneously. It is anticipated that the optical nonlinearity might afford new opportunities for detecting structured lights and may have great potentials in designing all-optical OAM devices, etc.

Abstract:Lasers, as the key driving force in the field of optics and photonics over other photonic components, are now being significantly benefited from the studies of nanophotonics and metamaterials, broadening laser physics and device applications. The properties of light are much more beyond its simple intensity and temporal characteristics. The fruitful nature of light provides a great variety of freedoms in manipulating light for modern photonic applications, including spin (polarization), chirality, angular momentum, and spin-orbit coupling. Unfortunately, all these fundamental properties and functionalities of light have not been fully exploited in micro/nano-laser systems because the conventional principles of laser design in bulk optics cannot be easily scaled down to the micro/nano scale. The capability of creating microlasers with controlled spin/orbital information and chirality in their radiations is expected to revolutionize next generation of photonic systems for computing and communication. In this talk, I will focus on our recent effort in harnessing optical losses for unique microlaser functionalities, in particular, an orbital angular momentum (OAM) microlaser that structure and twist the lasing radiation at the microscale. The effective generation of OAM lasing, especially at a micro/nano-scale, could address the growing demand for information capacity. By exploiting the emerging non-Hermitian photonics design at an exceptional point, we demonstrate a microring laser producing a single-mode OAM vortex lasing with the ability to precisely define the topological charge of the OAM mode and its polarization state. Our OAM microlaser could find applications in the next generation of integrated optoelectronic devices for optical communications.

Abstract:The orbital angular momentum (OAM) of the structure light is viewed as a candidate for enhancing the capacity of information processing. Microring has advantages in realizing the compact lasers required for on-chip applications. However, as the clockwise and counterclockwise whispering gallery modes (WGM) appear simultaneously, the emitted light from the normal microring does not possess net OAM. Here, we propose an OAM laser based on the standing-wave WGMs containing clockwise and counterclockwise WGM components. Due to the inhomogeneous intensity distribution of the standing-wave WGM, the single-mode lasing for the OAM light can be realized. Besides, the OAM of the emitted light can be designed on demand. The principle and properties of the proposed laser are demonstrated by numerical simulations. This work paves the way for exploring a single-mode OAM laser based on the plasmonic standing-wave WGMs at the microscale, which can be served as a basic building block for on-chip optical devices.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) from lasers holds promise for compact, at-source solutions for applications ranging from imaging to communications. However, conjugate symmetry between circular spin and opposite helicity OAM states (±ℓ) from conventional spin–orbit approaches has meant that complete control of light's angular momentum from lasers has remained elusive. Here, we report a metasurface-enhanced laser that overcomes this limitation. We demonstrate new high-purity OAM states with quantum numbers reaching ℓ = 100 and non-symmetric vector vortex beams that lase simultaneously on independent OAM states as much as Δℓ = 90 apart, an extreme violation of previous symmetric spin–orbit lasing devices. Our laser conveniently outputs in the visible, producing new OAM states of light as well as all previously reported OAM modes from lasers, offering a compact and power-scalable source that harnesses intracavity structured matter for the creation of arbitrary chiral states of structured light.

Abstract:Photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by phase-structured vortex light is an important and promising resource for the ever-increasing demand towards high-capacity data information due to its intrinsic unlimited dimensionality. Large superpositions of OAM are easy to be produced, but on-demand generation of arbitrary OAM spectra such as an OAM comb similar to a frequency comb is still a challenge; especially, the on-demand OAM comb and arbitrary multi-OAM modes have not yet been realized at the source. Here we report a versatile at-source strategy for developing a flexibly and dynamically switchable on-demand digital OAM comb laser for the first time, to our knowledge, by controlling the phase degree of freedom itself rather than any proxy. For this aim, we present a crucial design idea that a nested ring cavity configuration is composed of a degenerate cavity embedded into a stable ring cavity and a pair of conjugate two-fold symmetric multi-spiral-phase digital holographic mirrors loaded onto reflective phase-only spatial light modulators. In the nested ring cavity, the stable ring cavity and the degenerate cavity meet the requirements of high spatial coherence and supporting any transverse mode, respectively. The paired conjugate holographic mirrors located in mutual object and image planes circumvent the competing issue among different OAM modes and control the number and chirality of modes in OAM combs with ease. Our strategy has also universality as it has the ability of encoding OAM spectra with arbitrary distribution. The realization of a dynamic on-demand multi-OAM-mode laser is an important progress in the infancy of multi-OAM-mode sources. Our idea provides a promising solution for development of emerging high-dimensional technologies; in the future, there will be increasing opportunities in the fundamentals and applications of high-dimensional OAM modes, and beyond. Our strategy not only contributes to the development of new laser technology, but also provides a toolbox for both linear and nonlinear generation of the multiple OAM modes at the source. Abstract:An approach to producing the orbital angular momentum (OAM) based on spoof localized surface plasmons (spoof LSPs) in microwave frequencies is demonstrated both theoretically and experimentally. The fundamental and high-order modes of spoof LSPs occur when a textured metallic surface is excited with a microstrip line. Two orthogonal modes of spoof LSPs with +90° or -90° phase retardation are superimposed, resulting in a OAM-vortex mode. In the proposed design, two separate feeding ports are employed to excite the orthogonal resonant modes simultaneously, and a hybrid coupler is used to provide the required ±90° phase retardation. By loading a circularly arranged dipole array on the spoof LSPs, the confined surface waves of the spoof LSPs can be converted into radiated vortex waves. To verify this idea, an OAM-mode emitter with indices of ±3 is fabricated and measured. Experimental near-field distributions and far-field radiation patterns show excellent agreement with the simulated results.

Abstract:Wavelength-tunable vortex fiber lasers that could generate beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) hold great attention in large-capacity optical communications. The wavelength tunability of conventional vortex fiber lasers is, however, limited by a range of ∼35 nm due to narrow bandwidth and/or insertion loss of mode conversion components. Optical metasurfaces apart from being compact planar components can flexibly manipulate light with high efficiency in a broad wavelength range. Here, we propose and demonstrate for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, a metasurface-assisted vortex fiber laser that can directly generate OAM beams with customizable topological charges. Due to the designed broadband gap-surface plasmon metasurface, combined with an intracavity tunable filter, the laser enables an OAM beam with a center wavelength continuously tunable from 1015 to 1075 nm, nearly twice of other vortex fiber lasers ever reported. The metasurface can be designed at will to satisfy requirements for either low pump threshold or high slope efficiency of the laser. Furthermore, the cavity-metasurface configuration can be extended to generate higher-order OAM beams or more complex structured beams in different wavelength regions, which greatly broadens the possibilities for developing low-cost and high-quality structured-beam laser sources.

Abstract:On-chip integrated laser sources of structured light carrying fractional orbital angular momentum (FOAM) are highly desirable for the forefront development of optical communication and quantum information-processing technologies. While integrated vortex beam generators have been previously demonstrated in different optical settings, ultrafast control and sweep of FOAM light with low-power control, suitable for high-speed optical communication and computing, remains challenging. Here we demonstrate fast control of the FOAM from a vortex semiconductor microlaser based on fast transient mixing of integer laser vorticities induced by a control pulse. A continuous FOAM sweep between charge 0 and charge +2 is demonstrated in a 100 ps time window, with the ultimate speed limit being established by the carrier recombination time in the gain medium. Our results provide a new route to generating vortex microlasers carrying FOAM that are switchable at GHz frequencies by an ultrafast control pulse.

Abstract:The orthogonality among optical beams with different orbital angular momentum (OAM) modes presents a new perspective as independent data-carrying channels for multiplexing and demultiplexing. In particular, the theoretically infinite topological charge of OAM beam promises the unbounded capacity in communication systems. As a key part for the advancement of OAM technologies, OAM source has attracted considerable interest and experienced a rapid development. Nevertheless, conventional approaches to create OAM modes mainly rely on the use of bulky optical devices and external laser source, preventing their implementation into a miniaturized system. As a contrast, on-chip generation of OAM beams with a built-in source stands out with several advantages, including small footprint, compactness, portability, and high-power efficiency. In this work, a versatile approach to directly produce OAM modes with on-demand characteristics on a chip is demonstrated. Featuring the judicious combination of the emerging dielectric metasurface with the standard vertical cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL) platform, the approach represents a feasible solution to the wide implementation of wafer-level OAM emitters for optoelectronic integrations. Prototype laser chips for the generation of both individual OAM beam and OAM array with novel functionalites, such as controllable directionality and spatially varying topological charge and distribution, are systematically presented.

Chiral emission of vortex microlasers enabled by collective modes of guided resonances

Abstract:Vortex lasers have attracted substantial attention in recent years owing to their wide array of applications such as micromanipulation, optical multiplexing, and quantum cryptography. In this work, we propose and demonstrate chiral emission of vortex microlaser leveraging the collective modes from omnidirectionally hybridizing the guided mode resonances (GMRs) within photonic crystal (PhC) slabs. Specifically, we encircle a central uniform PhC with a heterogeneous PhC that features a circular lateral boundary. Consequently, the bulk GMRs hybridize into a series of collective modes due to boundary scatterings, resulting in a vortex pattern in real space with a spiral phase front in its radiation. Benefiting from the long lifetime of GMRs as quasi-bound state in the continuum and using asymmetric pumping to lift the chiral symmetry, we demonstrate stable single-mode lasing oscillation with a low optical pumping threshold of $18~\mathrm{kW/cm^2}$ at room temperature. We identify the real-space vortex through polarization-resolved imaging and self-interference patterns, showing a vivid example of applying collective modes to realize compact and energy-efficient vortex microlasers.

Abstract:Recently, the emergence of transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a novel characteristic of light has captured substantial attention, and the significance of adjustable OAM orientation has been underscored due to its pivotal role in the interaction between light and matter. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to manipulate the orientation of photonic OAM at subwavelength scales, leveraging spatiotemporal coupling. By tightly focusing a wavepacket containing dual spatiotemporal vortices and a spatial vortex through a high numerical aperture lens, the emergence of intricate coupling phenomena leads to entangled and intricately twisted vortex tunnels. As a consequence, the orientation of spatial OAM deviates from the conventional light axis. Through theoretical scrutiny, we unveil that the orientation of photonic OAM within the focal field is contingent upon the signs of the topological charges in both spatiotemporal and spatial domains. Additionally, the absolute values of these charges govern the precise orientation of OAM within their respective quadrants. Moreover, augmenting the pulse width of the incident light engenders a more pronounced deflection angle of photonic OAM. By astutely manipulating these physical parameters, unparalleled control over the spatial orientation of OAM becomes achievable. The augmented optical degrees of freedom introduced by this study hold considerable potential across diverse domains, including optical tweezers, spin-orbit angular momentum coupling, and quantum communication.
