Abstract:The optical vortices carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) are commonly generated by modulating the available conventional light beam. This article shows that a micro-laser operates at the exceptional point (EP) of the non-Hermitian quantum system can directly emit vortex laser with well-defined OAM at will. Two gratings (the refractive index modulation and along azimuthal direction and the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity) modulate the eigenmode of a micro-ring cavity to be a vortex laser mode. The phase-matching condition ensures that we can tune the OAM of the vortex beam to be arbitrary orders by changing the grating protruding from the micro-ring cavity while the system is kept at EP. The results are obtained by analytical analysis and confirmed by 3D full wave simulations.

Abstract:Semiconductor lasers capable of generating a vortex beam with a specific orbital angular momentum (OAM) order are highly attractive for applications ranging from nanoparticle manipulation, imaging and microscopy to fibre and quantum communications. In this work, an electrically pumped OAM laser operating at telecom wavelengths is fabricated by monolithically integrating an optical vortex emitter with a distributed feedback (DFB) laser on the same InGaAsP/InP epitaxial wafer. A single-step dry etching process is adopted to complete the OAM emitter, equipped with specially designed top gratings. The vortex beam emitted by the integrated laser is captured, and its OAM mode purity characterized. The electrically pumped OAM laser eliminates the external laser required by silicon- or silicon-on-insulator (SOI)-based OAM emitters, thus demonstrating great potential for applications in communication systems and quantum domain.

Abstract:Besides amplitude, phase and polarization, wavefront is an important property of electromagnetic (EM) waves. EM waves with twisted wavefronts are known to carry orbital angular momentum (OAM). In this paper, a complementary-type metasurface is proposed to generate an OAM beam at microwave regime. Two metasurfaces that can produce OAM of order 2 and 4 are designed. By using our novel design methods, which are based on circuit model and dyadic Green's function, a high conversion efficiency has been achieved with a very low profile.

Abstract:Light with helical phase structures, carrying quantized orbital angular momentum (OAM), has many applications in both classical and quantum optics, such as high-capacity optical communications and quantum information processing. Frequency conversion is a basic technique to expand the frequency range of fundamental light. The frequency conversion of OAM-carrying light gives rise to new physics and applications such as up-conversion detection of images and high dimensional OAM entanglements. Quasi-phase matching (QPM) nonlinear crystals are good candidates for frequency conversion, particularly for their high-valued effective nonlinear coefficients and no walk-off effect. Here we report the first experimental second-harmonic generation (SHG) of OAM light with a QPM crystal, where a UV light with OAM of 100 is generated. OAM conservation is verified using a specially designed interferometer. With a pump beam carrying an OAM superposition of opposite sign, we observed interesting interference phenomena in the SHG light; specifically, a photonics gear-like structure is obtained that gives direct evidence of OAM conservation, which will be very useful for ultra-sensitive angular measurements. We also develop a theory to reveal the underlying physics of the phenomena. The methods and theoretical analysis shown here are also applicable to other frequency conversion processes, such as sum frequency generation and difference-frequency generation, and may also be generalized to the quantum regime for single photons.

Abstract:An integrated device, which consists of a variable amplitude splitter and an orbital angular momentum (OAM) emitter, is proposed for the superposition of optical vortex beams. With fixed wavelength and power of incident beam, the OAM of the radiated optical superimposed vortex beam can be dynamically tuned. To verify the operating principle, the proposed device has been fabricated on the SOI substrate and experimentally measured. The experimental results confirm the tunability of superimposed vortex beams. Moreover, the ability of independently varying the OAM flux and the geometric distribution of intensity is illustrated and discussed with numerical simulation. We believe that this work would be promising in various applications.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM), as a fundamental parameter of a photon, has attracted great attention in recent years. Although various properties and applications have been developed by modulating the OAM of photons, there is rare research about the non-uniform OAM. We propose and generate a new kind of continuously tunable azimuthally non-uniform OAM for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, which is carried by a hybridly polarized vector optical field with a cylindrically symmetric intensity profile and a complex polarization singularity. We also present the perfect vector optical field carrying non-uniform OAM with a fixed radius independent of topological charges, which can propagate steadily without radial separation, solving the problem of the unsteady propagation due to the broadened OAM spectrum of the non-uniform OAM. This new kind of tunable non-uniform OAM with a cylindrical symmetric intensity profile, complex polarization singularity, and propagation stability enriches the family of OAMs and can be widely used in many regions such as optical manipulation, quantum optics, and optical communications.

Abstract:Orbital angular momentum (OAM) from lasers holds promise for compact, at-source solutions for applications ranging from imaging to communications. However, conjugate symmetry between circular spin and opposite helicity OAM states (±ℓ) from conventional spin–orbit approaches has meant that complete control of light's angular momentum from lasers has remained elusive. Here, we report a metasurface-enhanced laser that overcomes this limitation. We demonstrate new high-purity OAM states with quantum numbers reaching ℓ = 100 and non-symmetric vector vortex beams that lase simultaneously on independent OAM states as much as Δℓ = 90 apart, an extreme violation of previous symmetric spin–orbit lasing devices. Our laser conveniently outputs in the visible, producing new OAM states of light as well as all previously reported OAM modes from lasers, offering a compact and power-scalable source that harnesses intracavity structured matter for the creation of arbitrary chiral states of structured light.

Abstract:Photonic orbital angular momentum (OAM) carried by phase-structured vortex light is an important and promising resource for the ever-increasing demand towards high-capacity data information due to its intrinsic unlimited dimensionality. Large superpositions of OAM are easy to be produced, but on-demand generation of arbitrary OAM spectra such as an OAM comb similar to a frequency comb is still a challenge; especially, the on-demand OAM comb and arbitrary multi-OAM modes have not yet been realized at the source. Here we report a versatile at-source strategy for developing a flexibly and dynamically switchable on-demand digital OAM comb laser for the first time, to our knowledge, by controlling the phase degree of freedom itself rather than any proxy. For this aim, we present a crucial design idea that a nested ring cavity configuration is composed of a degenerate cavity embedded into a stable ring cavity and a pair of conjugate two-fold symmetric multi-spiral-phase digital holographic mirrors loaded onto reflective phase-only spatial light modulators. In the nested ring cavity, the stable ring cavity and the degenerate cavity meet the requirements of high spatial coherence and supporting any transverse mode, respectively. The paired conjugate holographic mirrors located in mutual object and image planes circumvent the competing issue among different OAM modes and control the number and chirality of modes in OAM combs with ease. Our strategy has also universality as it has the ability of encoding OAM spectra with arbitrary distribution. The realization of a dynamic on-demand multi-OAM-mode laser is an important progress in the infancy of multi-OAM-mode sources. Our idea provides a promising solution for development of emerging high-dimensional technologies; in the future, there will be increasing opportunities in the fundamentals and applications of high-dimensional OAM modes, and beyond. Our strategy not only contributes to the development of new laser technology, but also provides a toolbox for both linear and nonlinear generation of the multiple OAM modes at the source. Abstract:Due to the nature of infinite dimensionality, the orbital angular momentum (OAM) has been considered as a new degree of freedom of light and widely expanded the scopes of substantial optical applications such as optical telecommunication, quantum information, particle manipulation and imaging. In recent years, the integrated photonic OAM emitters have been actively investigated due to both compactness and tunability. Essentially, the number of available OAM modes by dynamic switching should be large enough so that the dimensionality of OAM could be explored as much as possible. In this work, an integrated photonic emitter with a wide switching range of OAM modes is theoretically developed, numerically simulated and experimentally verified. The independence of the micro-ring cavity and the scattering unit provides the flexibility to design the device and optimize the performance. Specifically, the dynamic switching of nine OAM modes (l = −4 ~ 4) with azimuthal polarization has been demonstrated by electrically controlled thermo-optic effect.

Abstract:In this letter, an all-fiber laser that can generate stable OAM modes with topological charges of 1 is demonstrated. A ring-core fiber designed in-house is used to reduce the crosstalk between OAM mode and other modes. A ring-core fiber-based long-period fiber grating (LPFG) and a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) are employed to select desired OAM mode. The coupling ratio of LPFG from HE11 mode to OAM mode exceeds 16 dB, and the mode purity of OAM mode is as high as 94.41%. This simple and compact fiber laser can be integrated into fiber-based OAM mode multiplexing optical communication system.

Abstract:We present a novel technique for generating beams of light carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) that increases mode purity and decreases singularity splitting by orders of magnitude. This technique also works to control and mitigate beam divergence within propagation distances less than the Rayleigh length. Additionally, we analyze a tunable parameter of this technique that can change the ratio of beam purity to power to fit desired specifications. Beam generation via this technique is achievable using only phase-modulating optical elements, which reduces experimental complexity and beam energy loss.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate multiple copies of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM) states through quasi-phase-matched (QPM) second-harmonic (SH) generation in a 2D periodically poled LiTaO3 (PPLT) crystal. Since the QPM condition is satisfied by involving different reciprocal vectors in the 2D PPLT crystal, collinear and noncollinear SH beams carrying OAMs of l2 are simultaneously generated by the input fundamental beam with an OAM of l1. The OAM conservation law (i.e., l2 = 2l1) holds well in the experiment, which can tolerate certain phase-mismatch between the interacting waves. Our results provide an efficient way to obtain multiple copies of the wavelength-converted OAM states, which can be used to enhance the capacity in optical communications.

Abstract:Recently, the emergence of transverse orbital angular momentum (OAM) as a novel characteristic of light has captured substantial attention, and the significance of adjustable OAM orientation has been underscored due to its pivotal role in the interaction between light and matter. In this work, we introduce a novel approach to manipulate the orientation of photonic OAM at subwavelength scales, leveraging spatiotemporal coupling. By tightly focusing a wavepacket containing dual spatiotemporal vortices and a spatial vortex through a high numerical aperture lens, the emergence of intricate coupling phenomena leads to entangled and intricately twisted vortex tunnels. As a consequence, the orientation of spatial OAM deviates from the conventional light axis. Through theoretical scrutiny, we unveil that the orientation of photonic OAM within the focal field is contingent upon the signs of the topological charges in both spatiotemporal and spatial domains. Additionally, the absolute values of these charges govern the precise orientation of OAM within their respective quadrants. Moreover, augmenting the pulse width of the incident light engenders a more pronounced deflection angle of photonic OAM. By astutely manipulating these physical parameters, unparalleled control over the spatial orientation of OAM becomes achievable. The augmented optical degrees of freedom introduced by this study hold considerable potential across diverse domains, including optical tweezers, spin-orbit angular momentum coupling, and quantum communication.

Abstract:We introduce a new method to generate and tune the optical orbital angular momentum of a focused Gaussian beam passing through the optical superlattice under the electro-optic effect. The orbital angular momentum (OAM) arises from the curl of polarization in our calculation. We see that adjusting the external electric field, the beam waist radius and the crystal length provides dramatic variation of OAM of light across the transverse section. It is believed that this invention will find its application in optical manipulation area.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a method to obtain central wavelength tunable orbital angular momentum beams with switchable topological charges (+1 or -1) in a stimulated Brillouin scattering erbium-doped fiber laser. Multiwavelength operation is achieved through cascaded stimulated Brillouin scattering in a single-mode fiber with a length of 6 km initiated by an external Brillouin pump. High-efficiency mode conversion between the fundamental mode and the orbital angular momentum modes is realized through a broadband two-mode long-period fiber grating. High-purity orbital angular momentum beams with up to 10 stable wavelength channels with a tuning range of 35 nm are achieved, which is the highest number of operating wavelengths and tuning range in an all-fiber laser for orbital angular momentum beam emission to the best of our knowledge. Both the operational central wavelength and number of operating wavelengths can be tuned by adjusting the primary pump power and the center wavelength of the tunable bandpass filter in conjunction with changing the Brillouin pump wavelength.
