Abstract:This paper comprehensively evaluates the Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) procedure against the “exact” nonlinear response history analysis (RHA) and investigates the accuracy of seismic demands determined by pushover analysis using FEMA-356 force distributions; the MPA procedure in this paper contains several improvements over the original version presented in Chopra and Goel (2002). Seismic demands are computed for six buildings, each analyzed for 20 ground motions. It is demonstrated that with increasing number of “modes” included, the height-wise distribution of story drifts and plastic rotations estimated by MPA becomes generally similar to trends noted from nonlinear RHA. The additional bias and dispersion introduced by neglecting “modal” coupling and P-Δ effects due to gravity loads in MPA procedure is small unless the building is deformed far into the inelastic range with significant degradation in lateral capacity. A comparison of the seismic demands computed by FEMA-356 NSP and nonlinear RHA showed that FEMA-356 lateral force distributions lead to gross underestimation of story drifts and completely fail to identify plastic rotations in upper stories compared to the values from the nonlinear RHA. The “Uniform” force distribution in FEMA-356 NSP seems unnecessary because it grossly overestimates drifts and plastic rotations in lower stories and grossly underestimates them in upper stories. The MPA procedure resulted in estimates of demand that were much better than from FEMA force distributions over a wide range of responses—from essentially elastic response of Boston buildings to strongly inelastic response of Los Angeles buildings. However, pushover analysis procedures cannot be expected to provide satisfactory estimates of seismic demands for buildings deforming far into the inelastic range with significant degradation of the lateral capacity; for such cases, nonlinear RHA becomes necessary.

Abstract:The pushover analysis （POA） procedure is diff icult to apply to high-rise buildings, as it cannot account for the contributions of higher modes. To overcome this limitation, a modal pushover analysis （MPA） procedure was proposed by Chopra et al. （2001）. However, invariable lateral force distributions are still adopted in the MPA. In this paper, an improved MPA procedure is presented to estimate the seismic demands of structures, considering the redistribution of inertia forces after the structure yields. This improved procedure is verifi ed with numerical examples of 5-, 9-and 22-story buildings. It is concluded that the improved MPA procedure is more accurate than either the POA procedure or MPA procedure. In addition, the proposed procedure avoids a large computational effort by adopting a two-phase lateral force distribution.

Abstract:In light of its tremendous saving in computational effort, the Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) approximate procedure has been successfully applied to estimate seismic demands of structures with a level of accuracy that makes it a strong competitor to nonlinear response history dynamic analysis (NL-RHA) in steel buildings with short to medium periods. However, the applicability of MPA to reinforced concrete buildings, especially those undergoing large inelastic seismic demands and in the presence of energy dissipation devices, has not been well established. The purpose of this study is to extend the applicability of the MPA method to mid-rise special moment resisting frame (SMRF) concrete buildings with and without energy dissipating devices (linear viscous dampers). Results indicate that that the MPA can predict, with simple modifications, the seismic deformation response of SMRF mid-rise concrete buildings (with or without dampers) with reasonable accuracy compared to NL-RHA.

NONLINEAR MULTIMODAL PUSHOVER ANALYSIS METHOD FOR SPATIAL STRUCTURES

Abstract:An improved nonlinear multimodal pushover analysis method is presented to incorporate contributions of multiple modes and the effects of their interactions to the responses. The key step for the method is to obtain equivalent static seismic force for the important vibration modes. An existing method for building structures based on SRSS combination of the nonlinear modal responses is first extended to spatial structures. A new method is next presented to combine the modal loads before conducting pushover analysis. The proposed method is general and independent of the types of the structures, and does not rely on the properties for building structures. The proposed method is applied to a long span arch structure to show that the nonlinear multimodal pushover method is capable of estimating the seismic response of spatial structures with moderately good accuracy. Improvements on the conventional pushover analysis method have been conducted recently. The notable two approaches are multimodal pushover analysis (3, 5-8) and adaptive modal pushover analysis (9-10). The former considers the contribution of the higher modes to the response in addition to that of the fundamental vibration mode, while the latter accounts for the a redistribution of the inertia forces due to structural yielding and the associated changes in the vibration properties of the structure. In this study, an improved nonlinear multimodal pushover analysis method, which considers contributions of multiple modes and the effects of their interactions to the responses, is presented. The method is applied to estimate the seismic response of a long span arch structure, and its effectiveness is calibrated. Estimation of seismic loads for specific types of structures without eigenvalue analysis may be very effective for practical application (4). However, we present in this study a more general approach based on elastic eigenvalue analysis in order to develop a unified approach independent of the types of the structures.

Abstract:Nonlinear static analysis (or pushover analysis) has been widely used in the last decade as a simplified and approximate method to evaluate the structural seismic performance and to estimate inelastic structural responses under severe ground motions. However most currently used pushover procedures with invariant lateral load patterns cannot fully reflect the effect of higher-order modes on structural dynamic responses. To overcome such a problem, a so-called Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) was proposed based on the modal decoupling response spectrum method where the effect of higher modes was considered. To date, most research on MPA has been focused on frame structures. In engineering practice, however, most medium-to high-rise building structures are in the form of frame-shear-wall. Therefore it is necessary to extend the current research activity to implement the MPA to frame-shear-wall structures. In this study, two reinforced concrete frame-shear-wall structures of 10 and 18 stories are analyzed to evaluate the performance of the MPA method and the pushover procedures with invariant load patterns. The evaluation is based on the “exact” solutions of a nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis. The results show that the MPA method including higher-order modes is more accurate than the other pushover procedures. This is more evident when estimating structural responses for high-rise structures than the medium-rise counterparts.

Abstract:In order to solve the instability issue that arise in some high modal pushover analysis (MPA) , an energy-based modal pushover analysis method is proposed. Rather than adopting the calculation formula of deformation based on the roof displacement in modal pushover analysis, this paper employs the equivalent displacement based on energy in determination of the nonlinear responses of the entire building. The target displacement was established by the energy-based equivalent single degree of freedom system and constant-strength displacement response spectra. The structural performance was evaluated with the target displacement based on energy, and the maximum deformation was calculated with SRSS combination procedure. The method was verified with a 9-story steel building. The results show that the method takes into account the higher-mode effects and avoids the instability returning phenomenon. And the method possesses high computing efficiency and favorable precision compared with the nonlinear time history analysis.
A pushover seismic analysis method for asymmetric and tall buildings

Abstract:A pushover seismic analysis method based on the extended N2 method is proposed. Compared to the extended N2 method, the proposed method has four modifications that account for nonlinear higher mode effects. In the first modification, a lateral load based on the equivalent static forces from the dominant dynamic modes of a building combined using the effective mass ratio is used in pushover analysis to consider the higher mode effect in elevation. In the second modification, the total torsional mode effective mass factor is used to modify target displacement in pushover analysis to consider inelastic higher mode effect in plan. In the third modification, the coefficient of torsion (CT) is determined by combining the CT from pushover analysis with that from response spectrum analysis using a contribution factor depending on the ductility level. In the fourth modification, the maximum inter-story drift is derived based on target displacement while considering the effects of story height, ductility, and building period. These modifications are verified using a 14-story building with 10% eccentricity and medium to high structural ductility. Analytical results show that the proposed method predicts better target displacement, CT, and maximum inter-story drift than the N2 and extended N2 method.

Abstract:Abstract Pushover analysis is a common nonlinear static procedure, performed to evaluate seismic response of civil structures. This approach allows considering the structural nonlinear behavior under earthquake loading in a simplified yet effective way; however, in its classic formulation, it is limited by restrictive and unrealistic assumptions. Thus, the basic method is inadequate for the accurate analysis of buildings without a vertical plane of symmetry and/or for multi-component earthquakes, where torsion effects cannot be neglected. Furthermore, standard pushover analysis only comprises one dominant mode of vibration; higher modes, and therefore their effects, are not accounted for. For all these reasons, the standard technique is generally not considered suitable for the assessment of buildings at high risk of natural-technological (NaTech) events, such as nuclear facilities in areas of high seismic activity. To overcome these limitations, a multi-modal pushover analysis procedure is here tested and validated on the data from a non-symmetric structure (the SMART case study) under multi-component earthquakes. In detail, the procedure applies a linear combination of modal load patterns, defined according to the well-established Direct Vectorial Addition (DVA) method. With respect to other existing multi-modal pushover analysis techniques, elliptical response envelopes are employed to calculate the corresponding combination factors. Innovatively, the identification of the dominant modes for the load pattern is not limited to the classic maximization of the forces at the basis of a structure but rather generalized to shear and displacement maximization at different heights and locations throughout the whole structural frame.

Abstract:The research was carried out for a live (G+5) structure. SAP2000 finite component software was used to analyze the building. Due to high land prices and a scarcity of land, multi-story structures are widespread in India. Seismic is a marvel that has the power to ruin huge constructions. Structures should be designed from the bottom up to be safe for people's lives, with the appropriate style and features, in order to have a flexible and reasonable disappointment. The primary purpose is to construct a tremor-resistant structure by performing a business seismic investigation, establishing the look with a static comparable research strategy, and analysing and planning the structure using SAP2000. As a result, all zones (II, III, IV, and V) were calculated by checking the structure's reaction and behaviour using its base shear, structural deformation, and performance curve. The Structural Design of Tall and Special Buildings

Abstract:In recent years, studies have focused on the seismic behavior of various structural systems, including single‐ and double‐layered spatial structures. While nonlinear dynamic analyses are common for these studies, they are time‐consuming and complex. To address this, many pushover procedures have been developed, but their effectiveness in spatial structures remains underexplored. This study introduces an optimized lateral loading profile for evaluating the seismic response of walled bilayer spatial structures. By combining dominant inertial forces and optimizing their corresponding coefficients with the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, an optimal loading profile is derived. The method's accuracy was tested on models with varying arch height‐to‐span ratios and a constant wall height‐to‐span ratio, as well as a 15‐story frame structure. The results obtained showed that the proposed method closely matches incremental dynamic analyses (IDAs) in predicting base shear, initial stiffness, and displacements, especially for higher arch height‐to‐span ratios. Additionally, the method accurately estimates drift profiles and nodal displacements on roofs and walls, and performs better than similar mode‐based methods for frame structures.

Abstract:Classical design procedures are less advantageous than performance-based seismic design (PBSD) of buildings, which is included in existing standards such as ASCE 41-23 for new buildings or retrofitting. PBSD requires accurate assessment of building seismic responses. Such assessments can be done using either faster nonlinear static procedures (NSPs) or more time-intensive nonlinear time-history analyses (NTHAs). However, the reliability of NSPs can be questionable, as shown by previous research. Practitioners need to conduct further investigations to determine safety margins and the applicability scope of these methods. This is especially important for irregular buildings and near-fault zones. This problem is investigated in this paper by first using 1250 single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) systems to evaluate the ASCE 41-23’s coefficient method and performing 25000 NTHAs for near- and far-fault records. Second, the responses obtained from two alternative approaches, the modal pushover analysis (MPA) and FEMA 440’s capacity spectrum method (CSM), are compared with NTHA responses for buildings with significant higher-mode effects. American standards are used to design 96 3D symmetric and asymmetric steel moment-resisting frame (MRF) buildings with different characteristics such as lateral, lateral-torsional, and torsional modes of vibration dominance as well as different stability conditions, which are considered in this paper. The MPA and CSM are compared with NTHAs in this paper. The results show that the ASCE 41-23’s coefficient method is unreliable for near-fault zones and that the MPA and CSM are unreliable for seismic evaluation of buildings with dominant lateral-torsional modes of vibration or significant P-Δ effects. The results also revealed that MPA is a conservative approach for seismic evaluation of torsionally dominant buildings while CSM is not.
Comparative assessment of nonlinear static and dynamic methods for analysing building response under sequential earthquake and tsunami

Abstract:This paper presents a comprehensive comparison of different dynamic and static approaches for assessing building performance under sequential earthquakes and tsunami. A 10‐storey reinforced concrete seismically designed Japanese vertical evacuation structure is adopted as a case study for the investigation. The case study building is first assessed under sequential earthquake and tsunami nonlinear response history analyses: the first time this is done in the literature. The resulting engineering demand parameters are then compared with those obtained when the analysis procedure is systematically simplified by substituting different static approaches for the nonlinear response history analyses in both the earthquake and tsunami loading phases. Different unloading approaches are also tested for the cases when an earthquake pushover is adopted. The results show that an earthquake nonlinear response history analysis, followed by a transient free vibration and a tsunami variable depth pushover, provides the best alternative to full dynamic analyses in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. This structural analysis combination is recommended and has the advantage that it does not require the tsunami inundation time history to be known in advance. The proposed double pushover approach is instead deemed only suitable for the collapse assessment of regular low to mid‐rise buildings and for the development of collapse fragility functions. An important observation made is that sustained earthquake damage seems not to affect the tsunami resistance of the case study building when the fully dynamic analysis is carried out for the sequential loading. This observation will be the subject of future work.

Abstract:Pushover analysis is a simplified method for structure seismic evaluation, which is extensively used gradually, and is recommended by the new code for seismic design of buildings of China. The load pattern selection is one of the critical issues in pushover analysis, especially for the case when the higher modes influence is important. In this paper, by fitting the code response spectrum for the second soil site, eight typical earthquake record including four natural records and four artificially generated acceleration records are chosen. Comparison between nonlinear time history analysis (NL-THA) employing the eight typical earthquake records and pushover analysis (POA) using five type load patterns imposed on three RC buildings is undertaken at various ground motion. By modal participation factor, the higher mode effect is quantified. It is found that with the increase of floor and the intensity of ground motion, the higher mode influence is getting more important and the result of pushover analysis is more sensitive to the load pattern. Suggestions about load pattern selection in pushover analysis are given when higher mode influence is found important.

Abstract:Pushover analysis is a non-linear static procedure (NSP) used to examine the structural response of a building during the inelastic limit before it reaches the edge of partial or total collapse. In this study a model of multi-story reinforced concrete building along with applied loads is analyzed in powerful non-linear static procedure using computer software ETABS. A limited number of horizontal forces are then applied to imitate the impact of ground movement. The building is supposed as a 6-story building, no shear walls used in the model as the level of earthquake hazard assumed very low. Moreover, deformations are determined. The forces would then be increased gradually, NSPs convert multi-degree of freedom models to single-degree of freedom models utilizing a pushover analysis to determine capacity curve or pushover curve which is horizontal roof displacement vs base shear, This curve plot reveals the highest base motion that the structure can withstand, and then estimate the maximum global displacement by combining a ground response spectrum with the capacity curve.

Abstract:Pushover analysis has been widely adopted in the seismic analysis of low- and medium-rise structures. It needs to be studied whether it is accurate for large-span spatial structure. In this paper, pushover analysis of a large-span spatial structure, Beijing A380 hangar structure at Capital International Airport is introduced. The modal load pattern is adopted to perform pushover analysis for the hangar structure. The pushover analysis results are compared with nonlinear response history analysis results. It is concluded that pushover analysis is accurate enough for large-span spatial structure, provided the modal participating mass ratio is larger than about 0.65.

Abstract:Static pushover analysis is a main method of structure's anti-seismic elastic-plastic analysis. Using this method combined with finite element software to analyze the numerical model which is rationally simplified from actual building, would be an important way for engineers to evaluate the performance of structures under earthquake. In this paper, based on a pushover test of a full-scale model, which is a two-story frame with dense grid slender columns, three finite element softwares were used to simulate the process of pushover test. And the numerical results were compared with test data, so that we can verify the reliability of numerical method through pushover analysis method in evaluating the structures' seismic capacity.

Abstract:Pushover analysis as an efficient nonlinear static analysis method has been widely applied to the seismic inelastic performance evaluation of above-ground structures. Although it has the main advantage of high computational efficiency compared to nonlinear dynamic time-history analysis (THA), the assumption that the fundamental mode dominates structural response limits its application to long-period structures. Improved pushover analysis has been developed to consider the higher mode effect, named modal pushover analysis (MPA), but all research mainly focused on buildings and bridges. Since the mechanical behaviors of the underground structures and above-ground structures under seismic exaction are not exactly the same, so far, MPA suitable for seismic performance assessment of underground structures still has not been developed. Therefore, the aim of this investigation is to develop MPA for the seismic performance assessment of underground structures. A prototype subway station structure and a soft site are used to study the applicability of the developed MPA and compare it with the traditional pushover analysis procedure and nonlinear THA. Numerical analysis results of the subway station illustrate the applicability and potential of the developed MPA for underground structures.

Abstract:Energy-based seismic evaluations of structures can give clear illustrations of seismic demands made upon structures. This paper presents a 3-dimensional energy-based modal pushover analysis (3D EMPA) method with equivalent three degree of freedom (ETDOF) system and equal-displacement rule. The lateral-rotational coupled effect on structures asymmetric in plan is considered using the energy-based modal pushover analysis (EMPA), which is more robust than the traditional Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) procedure. The proposed procedure was validated against a nonlinear time history analysis of a 5-storey structure. The results show that the method is able to take higher mode effects into account and that the instability of capacity spectra will be avoided. The maximum deformation obtained from EMPA shows good agreement with a nonlinear time history analysis results of the original system. The proposed EMPA procedure appears to be reliable and effective for evaluating the seismic response of asymmetric-plan structures.

Abstract:As an important seismic analysis method, Pushover is widely used in high-rise buildings, while there is still lack of investigation on applicability of Pushover analysis on diagonal grid structural system. Two structures with height 144 and 288 meters are respectively built, and then Pushover analysis and Incremental dynamic analysis are conducted. Results calculated by two different methods are compared, including top displacement vs. base shear curve, inter-story drift vs. inter-story shear curve, distribution of inter-story drift angle along the building height and plastic developing sequence of structural weak positions. Meanwhile, influence of three lateral load patterns (uniform pattern, inverted triangle pattern and SRSS pattern) on the results is investigated. Analysis results demonstrate that Pushover analysis can in some extent reflect seismic performance of structures and SRSS load pattern can better capture global and local information of structures compared with other two patterns.

Abstract:An evaluation of the four analytical methods recommended in FEMA-356 for the estimation of seismic demands is carried out on two instrumented steel buildings. Prior to conducting the FEMA-356 analyses, computer models of each structural system were calibrated to observed response data. One of the two buildings that experienced no visible damage during Northridge was modeled as a three-dimensional system, while the second building that suffered moderate damage during the Northridge earthquake was further tuned to yield a simplified two-dimensional model so that detailed inelastic evaluations could be performed on the model. Dozens of linear and nonlinear computer analyses under both static and seismic loads were carried out on each building, and typical results representing a summary of the findings are presented in this paper. Results of the evaluations provide insight into both modeling issues and the validity of the four analytical procedures outlined in FEMA-356. It is found that calibrating structural models to observed response is sensitive to mass and stiffness modeling assumptions and indirectly to the intensity of the ground motion that has an effect on the participation of nonstructural components. Linear and nonlinear static procedures do not consistently predict interstory drift estimates, a critical parameter in seismic evaluation and design. The linear static approach was found to be conservative in one case study while the findings from the second case study were less conclusive about the validity of each analytical procedure.
