Abstract:Chondrichthyans are considered a highly threatened marine species, due both to the intense fishing pressure they have experienced in the world’s Oceans over several decades, and other threats, such as habitat loss, climate change and marine pollution. A rapid decline in their populations could trigger significant negative changes in marine ecosystems, highlighting the need for improved conservation measures. This study analyzes the current state of this group in the waters of Montenegro (in the southeastern Adriatic Sea). The first national checklist is provided here, comprising of 44 species, with information on their occurrence frequencies in Montenegrin fishery catches. The dataset used consists of 1469 records obtained from 281 field samplings conducted as part of the official monitoring of commercial fisheries (DCF-DCRF) aswell as 1222 records derived from citizen science. The latter contributed significantly in documenting a greater number of species, particularly those considered threatened or rare in the region, and/or overlooked by DCF-DCRF monitoring. The frequency of species in Montenegrin catches is described based on the percentage of their records in the total number of records originating from local fisheries. The obtained results indicate that only 16% of the species recorded in Montenegro are commonly present in country’s catches, while 66% are either rare or not observed in local fishery. The creation of the country’s first checklist might contribute to overcoming drawbacks in national legislation and protection measures, notably by reporting the presence of endangered species in national marine waters.

Abstract:Adriatic Sea is a diverse marine ecosystem that supports a rich biodiversity of polychaete species on soft and hard-bottoms, with 764 recorded species in the latest inventory list. Benthic surveys conducted in 2018 in the hard-bottom infralittoral zone on the east coast of the central Adriatic Sea revealed one previously unreported species for the Adriatic Sea, Syllis kabilica Ben-Eliahu, 1977 (Syllidae), as well as two species reported for the first time in the eastern Adriatic Sea, Syllis tyrrhena (Licher and Kuper, 1998) (Syllidae), and Streblosoma nogueirai Lezzi and Giangrande, 2019 (Terebellidae). Furthermore, one alien species was identified, Lysidice collaris Grube, 1868 (Eunicidae). These findings provide new insights into the distribution and diversity of polychaete fauna in the Adriatic Sea.

Abstract:The authors studied the structure of the coastal fish assemblage in a temperate coral reef within a marine protected area in order to provide a baseline information on the occurrence and temporal distribution of fish and to highlight the importance of the coral reef to ichthyofauna. The coastal fish assemblage was investigated at two sites in Veliko jezero (Mljet National Park) in the southern Adriatic Sea with a non-destructive SCUBA visual technique in the period from 2013 to 2021. Altogether, 38 fish taxa were recorded on the right bank (coral reef) and 36 species on the left bank. The presence of the coral reef at a depth range between 9 m to 12 m is the main factor differentiating the fish fauna in these two areas, which are otherwise governed by the same environmental factors. At the coral reef a decrease in fish diversity was discovered with a steady regression from 2013 to 2021.

Abstract:Studies on aquatic Diptera in the Plitvice Lakes National Park (Croatia) conducted in the last 50 years have produced 157 species and 7 taxa of aquatic Diptera placed in 13 families. Samples were collected at 25 sampling sites representing the four main types of karst aquatic habitats: spring, stream, tufa barriers and lakes. All records of all the aquatic families of Diptera in Plitvice Lakes NP are summarized, including previously unpublished data. Twelve species new for Plitvice Lakes NP are recorded for the first time, belonging to the families: Chironomidae - Labrundinia longipalpis (Goetghebuer, 1921), Nilothauma brayi (Goetghebuer, 1921), Potthastia longimanus Kieffer, 1922, Polypedilum (Polypedilum) nubeculosum (Meigen, 1804), Tanytarsus brundini Lindeberg, 1963; Dixidae - Dixella autumnalis (Meigen, 1838); Scathophagidae - Acanthocnema latipennis Becker, 1894 and Stratiomyidae - Oxycera pardalina Meigen, 1822, Oxycera limbata Loew, 1862, Oxycera turcica Ustuner & Hasbenli, 2004, Nemotelus pantherinus (Linnaeus, 1758), Oplodontha viridula (Fabricius, 1775). The most species-rich family was the Chironomidae with 62 species (and an additional seven taxa), followed by the Empididae with 22 species and Limoniidae with 19 species. The highest number of species was recorded in springs. The relatively low number of species in certain families and the complete absence of some aquatic families shows that further research into the aquatic Diptera in Plitvice Lakes NP is needed.
Evidence of new chironomid taxa (Diptera, Chironomidae) for Croatia from a mountain stream in the Pannonian Plain

Abstract:According to the first Croatian check-list (Čerba et al. 2020), a total of 239 Chironomidae species has so far been recorded from the country. In the present paper we report the finding of two new taxa from the mountain stream Šumetlica, eastern Croatia, namely Boreoheptagyia legeri (Goetghebuer, 1933) and Diamesa cf. insignipes Kieffer, 1908. Šumetlica in the Psunj Mountain is about a 27 km long stream that rises near the highest mountain peak in this area, Brezovo Polje. Macroinvertebrate samples were collected at 415 m a.s.l. in June 2020 and May 2021 according to the AQEM standard multi-habitat protocol. Physico-chemical water parameters were measured in situ. Isolation and identification of macroinvertebrates were carried out in the laboratory. A total of 79 macroinvertebrate taxa were recorded, of which 26 were Chironomidae. The most abundant Chironomidae taxa were, Tvetenia calvescens, Conchapelopia agg. and Brillia bifida in the first sampling period, and Polypedilum convictum in the second. The species Boreoheptagyia legeri was collected with the abundance of 24 individuals per m2 in 2020, while 30 individuals per m2 Diamesa cf. insignipes larvae was recorded in 2021. Representatives of Diamesinae subfamily are usually found in cool, oxygen rich mountain or glacial streams. Diamesa larvae inhabit springs and streams in the mountain region, mainly on stones and gravel, especially those covered with moss cushions, while species of the genus Boreoheptagyia prefer a constant trickle of water. Both inhabit higher elevation mountainous regions, but occasionally Diamesa species are found in the foothills. Boreoheptagyia legeri is the only species of the genus that has been recorded outside the highest mountainous regions, in temperate elevations, under 500 m a.s.l. Our findings contribute to the knowledge of ecology and distribution of Diamesinae representatives.

Abstract:Species belonging to the superorder Batoidea have been poorly assessed due to the lack of information on their life history aspects and their limited economic value. This work presents an overview of skates and rays inhabiting the marine Greek waters and reports biodiversity issues requiring resolution for conservation purposes. Overall, 30 species from nine families and 16 genera have been documented within the past 22 years, based on the available literature and technical reports from research surveys of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR). However, 28 species are currently confirmed, since the presence of two rajids has not been sufficiently demonstrated and hence is considered as doubtful. Recent changes in nomenclature allowed us to replace old with new names in four species on the Greek list; patterns in the frequency of occurrence were observed and species were assigned into five categories; and diversity and misidentification issues were reported by family. Although Greek waters are oligotrophic and not considered a biodiversity hot spot for elasmobranchs, a high number of batoid species is documented in the area; therefore, the need to reinforce knowledge on biological aspects of skates and rays, define their status and identify their main threats is essential.

Abstract:Background: The first summarising checklist of Ukrainian Chironomidae (Insecta, Diptera) consisted of 302 species. Compared to other European countries, it is obvious that the real chironomid diversity of Ukraine has not been fully documented and greater effort is needed to discover the actual richness of this family. Thus, our survey focused on the chironomid fauna of some alpine lakes situated above the treeline in the Ukrainian Carpathians (a part of the Eastern Carpathians) aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the Ukrainian chironomid fauna and create the basis for more comprehensive neo- and palaeolimnological studies of these, regionally, little-known ecosystems. New information: In total, 34 species/taxa, belonging to 22 genera and 4 subfamilies were collected in June 2019. Ten species were recorded for the first time in Ukraine: Zavrelimyia melanura, Acamptocladius reissi, Cricotopusspeciosus, Cricotopuscurtus, Heterotrissocladius marcidus, Orthocladius dentifer, Psectrocladiusoligosetus, Polypedilumuncinatum, Paratanytarsus laccophilus and Tanytarsus bathophilus. The occurrence of six species previously considered as "doubtfully present" in Ukraine was finally confirmed. Generally, the surveyed lakes have a unique composition of chironomids consisting of a mixture of species typical for cold alpine lakes and acidic ponds situated at lower altitudes.

Abstract:One specimen of spearfish remora Remora brachyptera (Lowe, 1839) was caught in a bottom trawl in the eastern Adriatic Sea (Croatia) in June 2021. Morphological analysis and genetic barcoding were used for species identification. Despite references to the species inhabiting the Mediterranean Sea, no documented records have been available to substantiate its presence in the basin. This finding represents the first documented record of this species from the Adriatic and Mediterranean Seas.

Abstract:This study provides an updated and comprehensive checklist of bony fishes occurring in the Persian Gulf based on a recent survey of the region. This study was conducted from 1995 to 2020 by research trawl survey for identification and biomass estimation of the demersal species each year from autumn to late winter, covering all waters of Iran in the Persian Gulf. In addition to the research cruises, routine field visits were conducted at major fishing ports to identify pelagic species captured through gillnet and trap fisheries. Among the over 700 species reported in previous studies conducted in the Persian Gulf, the occurrence of 486 species has been confirmed. Several species were omitted from the revised checklist due to insufficient evidence supporting their occurrence in the region or due to taxonomic confusion. Throughout the study, 486 species of bony fishes, representing 101 families, were identified, and a critical review of relevant literature was conducted. This checklist serves as a reliable reference to address existing contradictions in the scientific literature on bony fishes of the Persian Gulf and establishes a foundation for future stock assessment studies in the region.

Abstract:The complex biogeographical history of the Balkan Peninsula caused remarkable freshwater fish diversity and endemism, among which Cyprinidae fish dominate. The Dinaric karst was a Pleistocene refugium and it harbors ancient and endemic cyprinids, including Aulopyge huegelii, a sole representative of its genus. Being highly distributionally restricted, it faces various threats that promote a critical decline in population abundance and even population extinction. Phenotypic and molecular diversity of the introduced (Šator Lake, Šator Mountain) and natural (Studena River, Duvanjsko Polje) populations of Dalmatian barbelgudgeon from Bosnia and Herzegovina was studied by using two mitochondrial genes and morphometric traits (linear and geometric morphometrics). Nonparametric ANOVA showed that two analyzed populations significantly differed in six linear measurements, except snout length and postorbital head length. Contrary to centroid size, two populations were found to be significantly different in body shape. Deformation grids indicated that individuals from Studena River are characterized by wider and slightly shorter body comparing to individuals from Šator Lake. Incongruence in cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) and cytochrome b (cyt b) mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation was observed since a common COI haplotype was observed, while four and three cyt b haplotypes were registered in Šator Lake and Studena River, respectively. Since it was demonstrated that cyt b mtDNA was a faster evolving gene, we encourage its use in intraspecies studies, especially for evaluating the connectivity of fragmented populations and for studying the evolutionary footprint of the processes incorporated into the distinctive evolution of Aulopyge. Finally, findings herewith provide a firm basis for designing a long‐term sustainable conservation strategy for endemic species in Dinaric karst.

Abstract:Chondrichthyans are a very important taxon that plays a top predator role in the trophic level of the food web, and species are particularly vulnerable to exploitation in the marine ecosystem. The deep waters of the eastern Mediterranean Sea have been less studied than the continental shelf, especially for the chondrichthyans. Therefore, the present study was conducted to investigate the spatio-temporal distribution of chondrichthyans collected monthly in eight different (200–900 m) depth strata during different periods (2010–2011 and 2019–2021) using an otter bottom trawl. A total of 17 species were identified in upper bathyal, composed of 6 batoids, 10 sharks, and one chimaera. The constant species (dominance: DO% > 50) in the study area were Galeus melastomus , Scyliorhinus canicula , Etmopterus spinax , and Raja clavata . The most abundant species was E. spinax , followed by G. melastomus . Fourteen and 15 species were caught during the first and the second survey, respectively. Biodiversity characteristics (number of species, abundance, and diversity indices) varied only with bottom depth. Two different depthwise assemblages were estimated along the bottom depth gradient; ≤ 500 m and > 500 m. The discriminator species were R. clavata , S. canicula , G. melastomus , Dipturus oxyrinchus , and Squalus blainville found on the upper slope and E. spinax , G. melastomus , and Centrophorus cf. uyato found on the lower slope. With our results, total number of demersal chondrichthyan species found in the bottom (bathyal and continental shelf) of Antalya Bay was reached to 26 species.

Composition and zoogeography of marine-estuarine fish from a lagoon system in a temperate-tropical transition zone of the Eastern Pacific

Abstract:We present an updated systematic checklist of fishes from the Bahía Magdalena-Almejas lagoon system (Mexico), including notes on taxonomy, zoogeography, and conservation status, supported by field samplings and the critical review of published and online data. The ichthyofauna is composed by 2 classes, 30 orders, 104 families, 240 genera and 416 species, mainly represented by the class Actinopterygii. Zoogeographically, the fishes showed highest affinity to the San Diego (87.2%), Cortez (81.4%) and Mexican (70%) provinces, reflecting the ancient relationship between the Californian and Tropical Eastern Pacific regions and the existence of a transitional zone in the Baja California Peninsula for fish assemblages from boreal-temperate and warm-tropical derivation, standing out the presence of the endemic Paraclinus magdalenae. The 91% of the ichthyofauna is included by the IUCN Red List as Lower Concern, Data Deficient and Not Evaluated, while Holacanthus clarionensis and Hippocampus ingens, are under Special Protection by the Mexican regulation. Ecologically, 233 species are marine-euryhaline and 177 marine-stenohaline, which preferentially inhabit soft (57%) and rocky (27.5%) bottoms; most species are demersal (60%), benthic (25%) and pelagic (14.4%). The updated checklist could improve the design and implementation of effective fishing regulation strategies and conservation programs for fishes inhabiting this coastal ecosystem.

Abstract:In the present study, 15 new records from Kavaratti Atoll are added to the ichthyofaunal diversity of the Lakshadweep Archipelago and six to the Indian fish fauna based on underwater photographs and videos. Fishes were recorded from both lagoon and forereef areas off Kavaratti. The new records include Cirripectes auritus (Blackflap blenny), Cirripectes polyzona (Barred blenny), Ecsenius bicolor (Bicolor blenny), Glyptoparus delicatulus (Delicate blenny), Amblyeleotris wheeleri (Gorgeous prawn-goby), Eviota punyit (Punyit dwarfgoby), Eviota cf. teresae (Viridescent dwarfgoby), Cirrhitichthys falco (Dwarf hawkfish), Halichoeres leucoxanthus (Canarytop wrasse), Pseudocheilinus evanidus (Disappearing wrasse), Coris latifasciata (Broad banded wrasse), Pomacentrus xanthocercus (Yellowtail damsel), Plectroglyphidodon luteobrunneus (Indian gregory), Pomacentrus indicus (Indian damsel) and Synodus dermatogenys (Sand lizardfish). Six species, G. delicatulus, E. cf. teresae, E. punyit, P. xanthocercus, P. evanidus and C. latifasciata represent new records for Indian waters. The genus Amblyeleotris is recorded for the first time from Lakshadweep.

Abstract:The Mediterranean Sea houses a rather diverse chiton fauna (Mollusca: Polyplacophora). Four are here described as new, all based upon loose valves recovered from biogenic sediments: Leptochiton freiwaldi sp. nov. , Hanleya schwabei sp. nov. , " Ischnochiton " luquei sp. nov. , Acanthochitona barbarae sp. nov. The updated Mediterranean Sea chiton fauna comprehends as many as 47 species, distributed in the families Leptochitonidae (15 species), Hanleyidae (3 species), Ischnochitonidae (7 species), Callistoplacidae (1 species), Chaetopleuridae (1 species), Callochitonidae (3 species), Chitonidae (5 species), Lepidochitonidae (6 species), Tonicellidae (1 species), Acanthochitonidae (5 species). Seven taxa are only known from loose valves: Leptochiton antondohrni , L. freiwaldi sp. nov. , Hanleya schwabei sp. nov. , "Ischnochiton" luquei sp. nov. , Lepidochitona marcoi, Boreochiton ruber and Acanthochitona barbarae sp. nov. Similarly to other deep-sea mollusks described from the Mediterranean basin, some of them could possibly belong to last glacial Pleistocene submerged assemblages. On the contrary, Hanleya schwabei sp. nov. and Acanthochitona barbarae sp. nov. occur also at shallower depths, and are assigned to the modern Mediterranean fauna. The presence of the Atlantic taxon Chaetopleura angulata could be an accidental introduction into the Mediterranean. The species Tegulaplax hululensis, considered a Lessepsian immigrant, is a potentially forerunner of a more massive introduction of tropical Polyplacophora via the Red Sea. This study set a baseline for a better understanding of the evolutionary and biogeographic patterns of the Mediterranean Polyplacophora.

Abstract:Two cases of the occurrence of the alien heterobranch species, Dermatobranchus rubidus (Gould, 1852) are reported for the Adriatic Sea. The first record originates from June 2019 from the island of Brač (Croatia, Middle Adriatic Sea), when a specimen was found during the collection of clams, while the second specimen was sighted at Fiesa (Gulf of Trieste, Northern Adriatic Sea) in October 2023, photographed on coarse sand bottom. These are the first records for the Adriatic Sea and indications of the possible establishment of this species in the Mediterranean Sea. Due to its cryptic behaviour and perhaps nocturnal habits, it is difficult to assess whether the species has been overlooked so far or whetherit is extending its distribution in the Mediterranean.

Abstract:Abstract The sharpnose sevengill shark ( Heptranchias perlo ) is a rare and poorly understood deep‐sea species, with only a few records in the Adriatic Sea over the last two centuries and a significant gap in sightings. Throughout 2023, three new records are documented in the southernmost Adriatic Sea, found at depths ranging from 391 to 452 m off Vlorë. This study marks the first comprehensive health examination of a deep‐sea shark, investigating potential trauma and injuries resulting from trawling. It encompasses pathological and histopathological examinations, supplemented by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The research highlights alarming post‐capture mortality rates in this data deficient species, discusses further conservation implications, and proposes protective measures for the species. Beyond addressing critical knowledge gaps, this study advocates for collaborative efforts with local fishermen to establish long‐term monitoring and obtain data on the frequency and abundance of elusive species.

Abstract:This Collective Article presents information about 30 species with records in eight countries (Greece, Israel, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Syria and Türkiye) and six ecoregions extending from the Alboran to the Levantine Seas. The recorded species belong to eight Phyla (4 Chlorophyta, 1 Rhodophyta, 1 Porifera, 3 Cnidaria, 2 Platyhelminthes, 2 Arthropoda, 2 Mollusca and 15 Chordata) as follows: Chlorophyta: Didymosporangium repens, Ochlochaete hystrix and Phaeophila hirsuta are reported for the first time from the Aegean coasts of Türkiye and Penicillus capitatus is firstly recorded in Slovenian coastal waters; Rhodophyta: Ptilophora dentata is recorded for the first time in Turkish coasts, from the entrance of a marine cave; Porifera: Tethya meloni is reported from Montenegrin waters; Cnidaria: Savalia savaglia and Dendrophyllia ramea are firstly observed north of the Almeria-Oran front in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula, while Spinimuricea cf. atlantica is firstly recorded in the Gulf of Lion constituting the easternmost record of the species in the Mediterranean Sea; Platyhelminthes: the polyclad flatworms Thysanozoon brocchii and Planocera graffi are reported for the first time from Greek waters, observed inside marine caves; Mollusca: Ascobulla fragilis is firstly reported from the Eastern Levantine Sea while the blanket octopus Tremoctopus violaceus is recorded in Izmir Bay constituting its fifth sighting in the Aegean Sea after a quarter of a century; Arthropoda: the copepod Ditrychocorycaeus africanus is firstly recorded in the Ionian Sea while the tufted ghost crab Ocypode cursor is detected further north in the Tyrrhenian Sea; Chordata: the bothid flounder Arnoglossus grohmanni is firstly reported in Spain while specimens of the rare bythitid Bellottia apoda are presented for the Adriatic Sea; the chondrichthyans Chimaera monstrosa, Dalatias licha, Heptranchias perlo, Leucoraja circularis, Mustelus mustelus, Oxynotus centrina, Squatina aculeata and Torpedo marmorata are presented as collected within 13 continuous years in the bathyal zone of the Antalya Bay; the speleophilic fish Grammonus ater is firstly recorded in the Alboran Sea, observed in a marine cave; the critically endangered sandy ray Leucoraja circularis is reported from the eastern Ionian Sea; the crested oarfish Lophotus lacepede is reported for the first time from Sardinia, based on evidence dating back 20 years; the white trevally Pseudocaranx dentex is firstly recorded in Tremiti Islands (Adriatic Sea, Italy) while the phaeton dragonet Synchiropus phaeton and the gobid Zebrus pallaoroi are firstly reported from Syrian and Italian waters, respectively.
