Abstract:This Collective Article presents information about 30 species with records in eight countries (Greece, Israel, Italy, Montenegro, Slovenia, Spain, Syria and Türkiye) and six ecoregions extending from the Alboran to the Levantine Seas. The recorded species belong to eight Phyla (4 Chlorophyta, 1 Rhodophyta, 1 Porifera, 3 Cnidaria, 2 Platyhelminthes, 2 Arthropoda, 2 Mollusca and 15 Chordata) as follows: Chlorophyta: Didymosporangium repens, Ochlochaete hystrix and Phaeophila hirsuta are reported for the first time from the Aegean coasts of Türkiye and Penicillus capitatus is firstly recorded in Slovenian coastal waters; Rhodophyta: Ptilophora dentata is recorded for the first time in Turkish coasts, from the entrance of a marine cave; Porifera: Tethya meloni is reported from Montenegrin waters; Cnidaria: Savalia savaglia and Dendrophyllia ramea are firstly observed north of the Almeria-Oran front in the southeastern Iberian Peninsula, while Spinimuricea cf. atlantica is firstly recorded in the Gulf of Lion constituting the easternmost record of the species in the Mediterranean Sea; Platyhelminthes: the polyclad flatworms Thysanozoon brocchii and Planocera graffi are reported for the first time from Greek waters, observed inside marine caves; Mollusca: Ascobulla fragilis is firstly reported from the Eastern Levantine Sea while the blanket octopus Tremoctopus violaceus is recorded in Izmir Bay constituting its fifth sighting in the Aegean Sea after a quarter of a century; Arthropoda: the copepod Ditrychocorycaeus africanus is firstly recorded in the Ionian Sea while the tufted ghost crab Ocypode cursor is detected further north in the Tyrrhenian Sea; Chordata: the bothid flounder Arnoglossus grohmanni is firstly reported in Spain while specimens of the rare bythitid Bellottia apoda are presented for the Adriatic Sea; the chondrichthyans Chimaera monstrosa, Dalatias licha, Heptranchias perlo, Leucoraja circularis, Mustelus mustelus, Oxynotus centrina, Squatina aculeata and Torpedo marmorata are presented as collected within 13 continuous years in the bathyal zone of the Antalya Bay; the speleophilic fish Grammonus ater is firstly recorded in the Alboran Sea, observed in a marine cave; the critically endangered sandy ray Leucoraja circularis is reported from the eastern Ionian Sea; the crested oarfish Lophotus lacepede is reported for the first time from Sardinia, based on evidence dating back 20 years; the white trevally Pseudocaranx dentex is firstly recorded in Tremiti Islands (Adriatic Sea, Italy) while the phaeton dragonet Synchiropus phaeton and the gobid Zebrus pallaoroi are firstly reported from Syrian and Italian waters, respectively.

Abstract:More than 60 marine non-indigenous species (NIS) have been removed from previous lists and 84 species have been added, bringing the total to 986 alien species in the Mediterranean [775 in the eastern Mediterranean (EMED), 249 in the central Mediterranean (CMED), 190 in the Adriatic Sea (ADRIA) and 308 in the western Mediterranean (WMED)]. There were 48 new entries since 2011 which can be interpreted as approximately one new entry every two weeks. The number of alien species continues to increase, by 2-3 species per year for macrophytes, molluscs and polychaetes, 3-4 species per year for crustaceans, and 6 species per year for fish. The dominant group among alien species is molluscs (with 215 species), followed by crustaceans (159) and polychaetes (132). Macrophytes are the leading group of NIS in the ADRIA and the WMED, reaching 26-30% of all aliens, whereas in the EMED they barely constitute 10% of the introductions. In the EMED, molluscs are the most species-rich group, followed by crustaceans, fish and polychaetes. More than half (54%) of the marine alien species in the Mediterranean were probably introduced by corridors (mainly Suez). Shipping is blamed directly for the introduction of only 12 species, whereas it is assumed to be the most likely pathway of introduction (via ballasts or fouling) of another 300 species. For approximately 100 species shipping is a probable pathway along with the Suez Canal and/or aquaculture. Approximately 20 species have been introduced with certainty via aquaculture, while >50 species (mostly macroalgae), occurring in the vicinity of oyster farms, are assumed to be introduced accidentally as contaminants of imported species. A total of 18 species are assumed to have been introduced by the aquarium trade. Lessepsian species decline westwards, while the reverse pattern is evident for ship-mediated species and for those introduced with aquaculture. There is an increasing trend in new introductions via the Suez Canal and via shipping.

Abstract:The invasion of non-native species (NNS) is one of the greatest threats to biodiversity loss and represents a major problem in the Mediterranean Sea. Although many recent EU policies and directives address this problem and numerous scientific papers have been published, the available data remains scattered and incomplete. In 2021, the World Register of Introduced Marine Species (WRiMS), a newly established database, was launched but has not yet undergone systematic analysis. This study performed a thorough examination of the NNS documented in the WRiMS database within the Mediterranean Sea (International Hydrographic Organization Sea Area). Our findings revealed that the majority of species in the WRiMS database for the Mediterranean are classified as "unspecified" or "uncertain", with only 79 species labeled as "invasive" and 13 as "of concern". The number of recorded animal species exceeds that of plants, and most species belong to the phyla Chordata and Mollusca. Callinectes sapidus and Fistularia commersonii were the most frequently recorded species in the WRiMS for the Mediterranean. Only one species, Eriocheir sinensisis, is on the list of invasive alien species of concern for the European Union. Although there exists some data on the impact of NNS and the vectors of their introduction, the information remains incomplete and requires further scientific research. The synthesized and summarized data in the supplement can be valuable input for a range of management decisions and for guiding further scientific research concerning NNS invasions in the Mediterranean Sea.

Abstract:The introduction of Non-Indigenous Species (NIS) in the Mediterranean Sea is one of the main threats to biodiversity and its increasing frequency could bring a significant ecological impact on native species. However, knowledge of marine bioinvasions, the spreading patterns of NIS and their possible pathways of dispersion is still limited, especially for particular taxonomic groups. In this paper, we report the first Mediterranean record of a colony of a non-indigenous bryozoan, Microporella hastingsae Harmelin, Ostrovsky, Cáceres-Chamizo and Sanner, 2011, found on plastic litter stranded south of Catania (Sicily, western Ionian Sea) during spring 2023. Based on this colony, a formal taxonomic description of M. hastingsae is provided for this species, which was recently erected for old, misidentified material collected in the early twentieth century in the Suez Canal and the north Red Sea. We suggest that the species could be considered a Lessepsian migrant assuming it entered the Mediterranean Sea at any time, through larval dispersal and/or the possible facilitation by human activities, presumably shipping. Further surveys in coastal localities of Sicily and the eastern Mediterranean are needed to confirm the establishment of M. hastingsae or if the present colony only represents an occasional record of the species in the basin.

Abstract:This work reports on 60 marine alien mollusks from nine countries across the Mediterranean Sea and the Sea of Marmara collected by two Belgian citizen scientists. Some of their published observations concerning collection dates are compared with the year of first publication for these alien mollusks reported in the literature, which enable us to backdate some of their introductions and set new first Mediterranean records for two species. This underlines the importance of collaboration between volunteers and institutional scientists in tracing variations and changes in the environment and biodiversity.

Abstract:The ocean is dynamically changing due to the influence of climate processes and human activities. The construction of the Suez Canal in the late nineteenth century opened the Pandora's box by facilitating the dispersal of Red Sea species in the Mediterranean Sea. In this study, we developed an open-source spatio-temporal numerical analysis framework to decodify the complex spread of Mediterranean non-indigenous fish species (NIS) that entered through the Suez Canal. We utilized 772 historical detection records of 130 NIS to disentangle their dynamic spread through space and time. The results indicated that species follow a north-westward trajectory with an average expansion time step of 2.5 years. Additionally, we estimated the overall time for a NIS to reach the Central Mediterranean Sea from the Suez Canal at approximately 22 years. Based on the analysis, more than half of the introduced fishes have been established in less than 10 years. Finally, we proceeded in the cross-validation of our results using actual spread patterns of invasive fishes of the Mediterranean Sea, resulting up to 90% of temporal and spatial agreement. The methodology and the findings presented herein may contribute to management initiatives in highly invaded regions around the globe.

Abstract:The re-examination of marine alien species or Non-indigenous species (NIS) reported in Italian Seas by December 2018, is here provided, particularly focusing on establishment success, year of first record, origin, potential invasiveness, and likely pathways. Furthermore, their distribution is assessed according to marine subregions outlined by the European Union (EU) Marine Strategy Framework Directive: Adriatic Sea (ADRIA), Ionian Sea and Central Mediterranean Sea (CMED), and Western Mediterranean Sea (WMED). In Italy, 265 NIS have been detected with the highest number of species being recorded in the CMED (154 species) and the WMED (151 species), followed by the ADRIA (143). Most of these species were recorded in more than one subregion. The NIS that have established stable populations in Italian Seas are 180 (68%), among which 26 have exhibited invasive traits.Among taxa involved, Macrophyta rank first with 65 taxa. Fifty-five of them are established in at least one subregion, mostly in the ADRIA and the CMED. Crustacea rank second with 48 taxa, followed by Polychaeta with 43 taxa, Mollusca with 29 taxa, and Pisces with 28 taxa, which were mainly reported from the CMED. In the period 2012-2017, 44 new alien species were recorded, resulting in approximately one new entry every two months. Approximately half of the NIS (~52%) recorded in Italy have most likely arrived through the transport-stowaway pathway related to shipping traffic (~28% as biofoulers, ~22% in ballast waters, and ~2% as hitchhikers). The second most common pathway is the unaided movement with currents (~19%), followed by the transport-contaminant on farmed shellfishes pathway (~18%). Unaided is the most common pathway for alien Fisshes, especially in CMED. Escapes from confinement account for ~3% and release in nature for ~2% of the NIS. The present NIS distribution hotspots for new introductions were defined on the first recipient area/location in Italy. In ADRIA the hotspot is Venice which accounts for the highest number of alien taxa introduced in Italy, with 50 newly recorded taxa. In the CMED, hotspots of introduction are the Taranto and Catania Gulfs, hosting 21 first records each. The Strait of Sicily represents a crossroad between the alien taxa from the Atlantic Ocean and the Indo-Pacific area. In the WMED, hotspots of bioinvasions include the Gulfs of Naples, Genoa and Livorno.This review can serve as an updated baseline for future coordination and harmonization of monitoring initiatives under international, EU and regional policies, for the compilation of new data from established monitoring programs, and for rapid assessment surveys.

Abstract:Adriatic Sea is a diverse marine ecosystem that supports a rich biodiversity of polychaete species on soft and hard-bottoms, with 764 recorded species in the latest inventory list. Benthic surveys conducted in 2018 in the hard-bottom infralittoral zone on the east coast of the central Adriatic Sea revealed one previously unreported species for the Adriatic Sea, Syllis kabilica Ben-Eliahu, 1977 (Syllidae), as well as two species reported for the first time in the eastern Adriatic Sea, Syllis tyrrhena (Licher and Kuper, 1998) (Syllidae), and Streblosoma nogueirai Lezzi and Giangrande, 2019 (Terebellidae). Furthermore, one alien species was identified, Lysidice collaris Grube, 1868 (Eunicidae). These findings provide new insights into the distribution and diversity of polychaete fauna in the Adriatic Sea.

Abstract:The Messinian Salinity Crisis and its precursor events have been the greatest environmental perturbation of the Mediterranean Sea to date, offering an opportunity to study the response of marine ecosystems to extreme hydrological change and a large-scale biological invasion. The restriction of the marine connection between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean already since the Tortonian–Messinian boundary resulted in stratification of the water column and increase water temperature and salinity variations. Here, we present a unified and revised marine fossil record of the Mediterranean that covers the Tortonian stage, the pre-evaporitic Messinian and the Zanclean stage and encompasses 22988 occurrences of calcareous nannoplankton, dinoflagellates, foraminifera, corals, ostracods, bryozoans, echinoids, mollusks, fishes, and marine mammals. This record adheres to the FAIR principles, it is updated in terms of taxonomy, and it follows the currently accepted stratigraphic framework. Based on this record, knowledge gaps are identified, which are due to spatiotemporal inconsistencies in sampling effort and the distribution of sedimentary facies, and the inherent differences in the preservation potential between the groups. Additionally, sampling bias in old records may have distorted the record in favor of larger, more impressive taxa within groups. This record is now ready to be used to answer both geological and biological questions, and is amendable when new fossil data are brought to light.

Updating the national list of marine alien species in Morocco

Abstract:This study provides an updated list of alien marine species that have been introduced to Morocco by analyzing both previous data and new findings. A total of 46 marine alien and 15 cryptogenic and crypto-expanding species were recorded in Moroccan waters. Alien species are more abundant in the Mediterranean (35 species) than in the Atlantic (16 species) waters. The number of records of introductions increased in recent years in Moroccan waters. Macrophyta ranked first in terms of the number of species (19 species), followed by Mollusca (8 species), Crustacea (7 species), Cnidaria (5 species), Pisces (3 species), and Tunicata (2 species), while Nematoda and Annelida each contain only one species. The finding of Phyllorhiza punctata, a new species recorded for the first time in the Moroccan Mediterranean waters, is described. The Moroccan Mediterranean harbors more established species (77%) than the Atlantic (69%), contrary to casual records (25% in the Atlantic and 20% in the Mediterranean). Within Moroccan waters, 12 species have been identified as either invasive or potentially invasive: Rugulopteryx okamurae, Sargassum muticum, Asparagopsis armata, Asparagopsis taxiformis, Caulerpa cylindracea, Codium fragile, Agarophyton vermiculophyllum, Artemia monica, Callinectes sapidus, Caprella scaura, Microcosmus squamiger, and Branchiomma luctuosum. The Transport- Stowaway pathway accounted for 23 and seven records in the Mediterranean and Atlantic, respectively. In the Mediterranean, the second most frequent pathway was Transport-Contaminant (6 species), while in the Atlantic was Escape (4 species). This list serves as a starting point for management measures and for selecting invasive alien species to assess their impact.

Abstract:Increased global trade has led to a surge in the introduction of non-indigenous species (NIS) worldwide. Ships, particularly merchant vessels and recreational yachts, act as vectors for these invasions by transporting NIS in ballast water or as hull fouling. This study investigates the introduction of new fouling NIS in the North Adriatic Sea. Our field research at the ports of Ravenna and Cesenatico identified several alien species, including new records for the North Adriatic Sea: Polyandrocarpa zorritensis, Aplidium accarense and Celleporaria brunnea. Additionally, a significant presence of the cryptogenic species Molgula manhattensis was observed in Cesenatico.

Abstract:We investigated the presence and diversity of cetaceans in the Mediterranean Sea, analysing the data collected by 32 different research units, over a period of 15 years (2004–2018), and shared on the common web-GIS platform named Intercet. We used the encounter rate, the species prevalence, and the Shannon diversity index as parameters for data analysis. The results show that cetacean diversity, in the context of the Mediterranean basin, is generally quite low when compared with the eastern Atlantic, as few species, namely the striped dolphin, the bottlenose dolphin, the fin whale, and the sperm whale, dominate over all the others. However, some areas, such as the Alboran Sea or the north-western Mediterranean Sea, which includes the Pelagos Sanctuary (the Specially Protected Area of Mediterranean Interest located in the northern portion of the western basin), show higher levels of diversity and should be considered hotspots to be preserved. Primary production and seabed profile seem to be the two main drivers influencing the presence and distribution of cetaceans, with the highest levels of diversity observed in areas characterized by high levels of primary production and high bathymetric variability and gradient. This collective work underlines the importance of data sharing to deepen our knowledge on marine fauna at the scale of the whole Mediterranean Sea and encourages greater efforts in the networking process, also to accomplish the requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, with particular reference to Descriptor 1: biological diversity is maintained.

Abstract:Bio-invasions have the potential to provoke cascade effects that can disrupt natural ecosystems and cause ecological regime shifts. The Mediterranean Sea is particularly prone to bio-invasions as the changing water conditions, evoked by climate change, are creating advantageous conditions for Lessepsian migrants from the Red Sea. Recently, in May 2023, a new alien species was documented in the Mediterranean Sea-a soft coral of the genus Dendronephthya. This discovery was made by divers conducting 'Long-Term Ecological Research' surveys, along the coast of Israel, at a depth of 42 m. Genetic and morphological testing suggest that the species identity may be Dendronepthya hemprichi, an Indo-Pacific coral, common in the Red Sea. According to life history traits of this species, such as accelerated attachment to available surfaces and fast growth, we expect it to rapidly expand its distribution and abundance across the Mediterranean Sea.
Invading the Mediterranean Sea: biodiversity patterns shaped by human activities

Abstract:Human activities, such as shipping, aquaculture, and the opening of the Suez Canal, have led to the introduction of nearly 1000 alien species into the Mediterranean Sea. We investigated how human activities, by providing pathways for the introduction of alien species, may shape the biodiversity patterns in the Mediterranean Sea. Richness of Red Sea species introduced through the Suez Canal (Lessepsian species) is very high along the eastern Mediterranean coastline, reaching a maximum of 129 species per 100 km2, and declines toward the north and west. The distribution of species introduced by shipping is strikingly different, with several hotspot areas occurring throughout the Mediterranean basin. Two main hotspots for aquaculture-introduced species are observed (the Thau and Venice lagoons). Certain taxonomic groups were mostly introduced through specific pathways—fish through the Suez Canal, macrophytes by aquaculture, and invertebrates through the Suez Canal and by shipping. Hence, the local taxonomic identity of the alien species was greatly dependent on the dominant maritime activities/interventions and the related pathways of introduction. The composition of alien species differs among Mediterranean ecoregions; such differences are greater for Lessepsian and aquaculture-introduced species. The spatial pattern of native species biodiversity differs from that of alien species: the overall richness of native species declines from the north-western to the south-eastern regions, while the opposite trend is observed for alien species. The biodiversity of the Mediterranean Sea is changing, and further research is needed to better understand how the new biodiversity patterns shaped by human activities will affect the Mediterranean food webs, ecosystem functioning, and the provision of ecosystem services.

Abstract:This study reports the first record and some features of two individuals of the Lessepsian migrant species smallscale codlet, Bregmaceros nectabanus, found in the stomachs of two individuals of European hake, Merluccius merluccius, sampled in the northern Ionian Sea (eastern Mediterranean) during the MEDITS International Bottom Trawl Survey. The two European hake were collected on muddy bottoms in September 2021 at 63 m depth (39.34950 oN; 16.52350 oE) and at 240 m depth (39.07156 oN; 17.12626 oE). Their morphological traits together with otolith and scale characteristics allowed the identification of the two specimens found in the stomachs as B. nectabanus. The analysis of the stomach contents for the larger individual is also reported. This finding underlines the utility of stomach content analysis as an indirect method to study the biodiversity of deep-sea ecosystems, including the spread of non-indigenous species as indicators of global warming.

Abstract:Fisheries-dependent data and information gathered through fisheries-related scientific surveys can significantly contribute to research on the patterns and processes underlying marine biological invasions and their interactions with fisheries. This study presents an overview of the presence of non-native fish species in the North Aegean Sea, offering insights into their distributions and impact on fisheries. The findings are based on a comprehensive compilation of commercial fisheries-dependent and scientific survey data collected in Greece from 2016 to 2023, along with a systematic review of the international scientific literature. The study resulted in the documentation of the presence of 37 non-native fish species, including several recorded for the first time in the area. The results suggest that non-native fish species invasions in the North Aegean Sea are dynamic. Although most species were classified as casual, and the frequencies of occurrence as well as the quantities in commercial fisheries catches of established species are smaller than in the South Aegean Sea, species introductions and the extent of occurrence and area of occupancy of several species have been increasing since the 2000s. The significance of non-native fish species is becoming increasingly relevant to commercial fisheries in the study area. This is particularly evident in the Northeastern Aegean Sea, where catches of non-native species are on the rise, and new species with potential commercial value have emerged in recent years.

Abstract:Starting in the summer 2023 and peaking in late 2023, large amounts of Sargassum were observed floating off the coast of Madeira Islands, Portugal. The analysis of the samples revealed the presence of the three most common morphotypes of the two known species of pelagic Sargassum: S. natans I, S. natans VIII, and S. fluitans III. This is the first record for the subtropical eastern Atlantic Ocean for S. natans VIII and S. fluitans III. Both species were found entangled, and even though the main purpose of the study was to document the occurrence of pelagic Sargassum in the Madeira archipelago, some associated fauna were also recorded: the crab Planes minutus (Linnaeus, 1758), the amphi-Atlantic shrimps Latreutes fucorum (Fabricius, 1798) and Hippolyte coerulescens (Fabricius, 1775), and the nudibranch Scyllaea pelagica Linnaeus, 1758. The last two are new records for the Madeira archipelago.

Abstract:The Salento Peninsula represents the eastern-most edge of the Italian Peninsula, and one of the first areas to be invaded by thermophilic non-indigenous species. The diversity of non-indigenous polychaetes occurring along the Salento Peninsula is reviewed based on literature data and new samples. Overall, fifteen non-indigenous polychaetes were recorded; among them, Syllis similisunzima is reported for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea; Lepidonotus tenuisetosus is recorded for the first time in Italian waters; Pseudonereis anomala, until now known only for Sicily, is reported for the first time from the Italian Peninsula; Dorvillea similis is a first record for the Ionian and Adriatic Sea. 16S rDNA and COI sequences were obtained for eleven species, allowing us in some cases to confirm their identity and/or geographical origin, while in the case of some species they represent the first molecular data ever obtained.

Abstract:The brown seaweed Rugulopteryx okamurae is currently included in the list of invasive alien species of European Union concern due to its rapid expansion that is causing both ecological and economic impacts. In this study, we report the first record of R. okamurae in the Southern Adriatic Sea, off the coast of Bari, Italy, currently representing the easternmost limit of its distribution in the Mediterranean Sea. Morphological observations combined with rbcL and psbA sequence analyses confirmed the taxonomic identification. Field surveys carried out between April 2023 and January 2024 highlighted the conspicuous occurrence of R. okamurae over a total surface of approximately 6.5 ha. Two main human-mediated pathways occurring near the sites of the first observation of the alien species may have been responsible for its introduction: the trade in living organisms for human consumption and maritime transport related to the proximity of the port of Bari to the invaded area. Future studies will aim to identify and implement practical, cost-effective management strategies to mitigate this alarming bioinvasion.

Abstract:The Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus, which is native to the western Atlantic coast and listed among the 100 most invasive alien species in the Mediterranean Sea, is attracting a great deal of interest because of its rapid colonisation of new areas, the significant increase in its population, and the impacts it may have on ecosystems and ecosystem services. Outside its natural distribution range, the species was first found on European Atlantic coasts in the early 1900s and was introduced into the Mediterranean Sea a few decades later, probably through ballast water. Currently, it is found in almost the entire Mediterranean Basin and is also expanding into the Black Sea and along the north African and Iberian Atlantic coasts. Based on a systematic review of C. sapidus occurrences, this study describes its distribution, aggregation patterns, and spatial structure in Northwest Europe, the Mediterranean Sea, and adjacent waters through a series of ecological indicators elaborated using GIS spatial–temporal statistics. The main results highlight that the species is expanding in the Mediterranean and adjacent waters, while in northern Europe, the population remains confined in some areas. Furthermore, the main species detection methods are analysed, finding that traps and nets are the most frequently used methods, and management suggestions are provided.
