Biomass Conversion and Biorefinery
Abstract:Metal cutting fluid is a widely utilized fluid in the metal sector for its integrated cooling and lubricating effect throughout various operations. Cutting fluids derived from minerals, artificial materials, and partially artificial substances have become prevalent in metal manufacturing operations. Contamination, features transformation, and reduced impact are primary drawbacks of metal cutting fluid, which produces waste metal cutting fluid (WMCF). Despite challenges in traditional WMCF treatment, there is a growing interest in sustainable alternatives, particularly in microalgae biorefinery. Moreover, the hazardous impact of current methods on both workers and the environment underscores the urgent need for new green technologies. Consequently, the potential of freshwater microalgae to develop on waste metal cutting fluids is utilized, which ultimately results in treatment of wastewater along with augmentation of bioactive compounds such as lipid and carotenoid for industrial applications. Here, Chlorella sorokiniana was cultivated in WMCF with abiotic elements such as nutrients and light. In WMCFs, the microalga had a greater rate of nutrient removal for chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorous (TP), total organic carbon (TOC), sulphur (S), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and iron (Fe). Cellular biomass, lipid, and carotenoid increased to 2.89 g/L, 1.03 g/L, and 11.8 mg/L. According to the current study, Chlorella sorokiniana in combination with abiotic variables is capable of enhanced nutrient removal from industrial effluent. As a result, a microalga growing based on abiotic variables provides an innovative strategy to successful wastewater treatment and subsequent biodiesel generation. Conclusively, integrating Chlorella sorokiniana with abiotic variables offers a pioneering strategy for waste metal cutting fluids, showcasing improved nutrient removal, sustainable wastewater treatment, and the production of valuable bioactive compounds, fostering environmental consciousness in the metal manufacturing sector.
