Abstract:An in situ transesterification approach was demonstrated for converting lipid-rich wet algae (Nannochloropsis sauna) into fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEE) under microwave-mediated supercritical ethanol conditions, while preserving the nutrients and other valuable components in the algae. This single-step process can simultaneously and effectively extract the lipids from wet algae and transesterify them into crude biodiesel. Experimental runs were designed to optimize the process parameters and to evaluate their effects on algal biodiesel yield. The algal biomass characterization and algal biodiesel analysis were carried out by using various analytical instruments such as FTIR, SEM-EDS, TLC, GC-MS and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) under nitrogen and oxygen environments was also performed to examine the thermal and oxidative stability of ethyl esters produced from wet algae. This simple in situ transesterification process using a green solvent and catalyst-free approach can be a potentially efficient route for algal biodiesel production. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:In general, sludge wastewater treatments from plants are often disposed of in landfills (60%) rather than recycled, and this eventually affects the environment. Microalgae cultivation in wastewater has recently emerged as an alternate method for successfully treating wastewater in an ecofriendly way. The present study explores the possibility of growing microalgae in sludge effluent derived from industries. Industrial sludge acts as the only nutritional supplement for algal growth. The amount of organic carbon might increase the amount of protein and carbohydrates used for the production of lipids. The batch culture of different ratios of sludge wastewater was compared. The features of algal growth and biodiesel generation were studied, as well as the nitrogen and phosphate removal rates. The lipid levels of Chlorella sp. produced in this medium were clearly superior to those grown on the BG11 medium. Furthermore, this study indicated that the removal of industrial sludge and wastewater, in the absence of other nutritional supplies, allows for an efficient culture of Chlorella sp., followed by biodiesel generation. This has significant research and industrial implications since it will enable Chlorella sp. production in a mixed waste culture medium without the need for additional nutritional sources.

Abstract:This study examined the potential for green microalgae to produce lipid that could be used for biodiesel production from wastewater substrate. Green microalgae has the potential to be used in the production of biodiesel because it accumulates 5.3211 g of lipid in 39.2246 g of centrifuged and oven-dried algae biomass, accounting for 13.57% of its dry cellular weight. This was obtained with wastewater substrate under open-culture growth conditions. The wastewater substrate contained phosphate, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, and sulfate at relatively optimal concentrations for culturing algae. The algae assimilated 95% of these nutrients on average for growth until the stationary phase was reached in 13 days. The most rapid cell doubling time observed was 192 h, and the maximum biomass production rate observed was 0.00057 mg/mg/day, reaching a peak algae weight fraction of 0.00926 mg/mg in 13 days. This study also examined and presented the scale-up of growing green microalgae in an open raceway culture system for obtaining maximum lipid yield from a wastewater substrate. The cost-benefit analysis of designing and building such a system was also presented in this study. The open raceway system described and modeled in this study measured 8 m * 3 m * 0.6 m and had a capacity of 10,000 liters, yielding 0.45 kg of biocrude lipid for each cycle of green microalgae culture harvested.

Abstract:Abstract The combination of wastewater treatment and biodiesel production using algal cultivation was studied in the present work. The two main goals of the work were achieved by the cultivation of freshwater microalgae such as Chlamydomonas sp., Scenedesmus ecornis , and Scenedesmus communis in two different dilutions of fertilizer plant wastewater (FWWD1 and FWWD2) collected from Yara Suomi Oy, Finland. The growth pattern of different algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 was observed. The effect of pH on biomass concentration, lipid content, biomass productivity, and lipid productivity by all three algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 were monitored. The maximum biomass concentration and productivity were observed in FWWD1 at pH7.5 for Chlamydomonas sp. and at pH 8.5 for S. ecornis and S. communis . The maximum lipid content was detected in Chlamydomonas sp at pH5.5, followed by S. ecornis and then S. communis at pH 7.5 in FWWD2 obtained after co-solvent extraction method. The most significant removal percentage of COD by all algal species were observed in FWWD1, whereas the highest removal percentage of TN and TP were detected in FWWD2, respectively. The fatty acid methyl ester (FAME) characterization of each algal species in FWWD1 and FWWD2 at their optimum pH was investigated to determine the quality of obtained biodiesel.

Abstract:As one of the most promising renewable energy, microalgal biodiesel has been widely studied worldwide. However, the low-efficiency of conventional microalgae cultivation procedures restrict the development of microalgae biodiesel production. Microalgal-bacterial symbiosis could both enhance the growth of algal-bacterial culture and promote the removal and conversion of wastewater nutrients. In this study, three strains of high-efficient heterotrophic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria JN1, FN3, and FN5 were screened from municipal wastewater treatment system with over 80% degradation rates of 50 mg/L ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) in 24 h. Among them, FN5, belonging to Kluyvera sp., had the optimum effect on enhancing growth of oil-rich microalga Chlorella pyrenoidosa. In stationary phase, the biomass and lipid content of Chlorella pyrenoidosa was14.8% and 13.6% higher than the blank control tests without FN5. In contrast, JN1 and FN3 failed to enhance the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. After the cultivation of Chlorella pyrenoidosa-FN5 consortia in municipal wastewater, the degradation rate of NH3-N was up to 91% while the content of microalgae biomass and lipid attained 0.35 g/L and 39.0%. The Saturated fatty acids (SFAs), Monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), and Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) were 43.9, 37.1 and 19.0%, respectively, which had the potential for biodiesel production after pretreatment. Abstract:Integration of wastewater treatment with algae cultivation is one of the promising ways to achieve an economically viable and environmentally sustainable algal biofuel production on a commercial scale. This study focused on pilot-scale algal biomass production system development, cultivation process optimization, and integration with swine manure wastewater treatment. The areal algal biomass productivity for the cultivation system that we developed ranged from 8.08 to 14.59 and 19.15–23.19 g/m2 × day, based on ash-free dry weight and total suspended solid (TSS), respectively, which were higher than or comparable with those in literature. The harvested algal biomass had lipid content about 1.77–3.55 %, which was relatively low, but could be converted to bio-oil via fast microwave-assisted pyrolysis system developed in our lab. The lipids in the harvested algal biomass had a significantly higher percentage of total unsaturated fatty acids than those grown in lab conditions, which may be attributed to the observed temperature and light fluctuations. The nutrient removal rate was highly correlated to the biomass productivity. The NH3-N, TN, COD, and PO4-P reduction rates for the north-located photo-bioreactor (PBR-N) in July were 2.65, 3.19, 7.21, and 0.067 g/m2 × day, respectively, which were higher than those in other studies. The cultivation system had advantages of high mixotrophic growth rate, low operating cost, as well as reduced land footprint due to the stacked-tray bioreactor design used in the study.

Abstract:Microalgae have been identified as a promising option for concomitant bioremediation of wastewaters and biodiesel generation. However, the nutritional composition of wastewater differs between locations, and some wastewater contains low nitrogen levels that inhibit microalgae growth, resulting in poor total nutrient removal and biomass output. Furthermore, the high cost of harvesting microalgae biomass is a barrier to commercial microalgae farming. This study aims to employ a novel microalga, Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I for bioremediation of low-nitrogen domestic wastewater. The nutritional balance of the wastewater was achieved with the addition of urea at two different levels and then was used for the cultivation of microalgae. The results showed that the optimized nutritional condition included total nitrogen (TN) of 250 mg/L and total phosphorus (TP) of 5 mg/L (N 250 /P 5 ). The culture cultivated in this optimal medium improved chemical oxygen demand (COD), TN, and TP removal by as much as 89.5 %, 99.98 %, and 99.1 %, respectively. Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I growth was likewise at its peak, with a value of 5.1 g/L, but with a low harvesting efficiency (0.02 %). Subsequently, Scenedesmus sp. DDVG I was co-cultured with a novel cyanobacterium, Limnothrix sp. DDVG II under the optimal nutritional condition. The results revealed a 99.5 % increase in harvesting efficiency with effective wastewater treatment. The co-culture-derived biodiesel also complied with the standard specifications. Further, analysis of the essential amino acid content and in vitro digestibility of the biomass proved its usefulness as a feed supplement. Overall, this study demonstrated a promising future for a cleaner environment and sustainable bio-economy of microalgae.

Abstract:Freshwater deficiency and growing requests for renewable energy have led to increased concern about water and energy security. Therefore, the present study attempted to evaluate the feasibility of using wastewater (WW) as a culture medium for microalgal cultivation with the aim of nutrient removal and biodiesel production. The green microalga Asterarcys quadricellulare (Chlorophyta) was isolated from a wastewater treatment plant in Menoufia, Egypt, and grown for 24 days in Bold's Basal Medium as a control and at different concentrations of secondary treated WW in distilled water (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%). The results of 75% WW treatment recorded 96.6%, 98.4%, and 89.9% removal efficiency for nitrate, ammonia, and total phosphorus, respectively. Also, it revealed high biomass yield and biomass productivity (1.44 g L−1 and 69.0 mg L−1 day−1, respectively). In addition, it showed higher lipid production (360.6 mg L−1) and lipid productivity (17.2 mg L−1 day−1). Asterarcys quadricellulare fatty acid profile estimation revealed elevated proportions of oleic (54.92%), palmitic (20.54%), and linoleic acids (13.9%). Most of the properties of biodiesel derived from the studied microalga are consistent with those recommended by the international standards. The current study concluded that A. quadricellulare could be used for wastewater bioremediation and biomass production with high potential as biodiesel feedstock.

Abstract:The present work primarily focused on isolation of Chlorella vulgaris from industrial wastewater, and use as an effective feedstock for producing renewable biodiesel. Post isolation, the lipid was extracted from Chlorella vulgaris using Soxhlet’s extraction method; and the extracted lipid was converted into algal oil biodiesel, which was then characterized using GC–MS spectral analysis. From the optimized reaction parameters: reaction temperature (45 °C), methanol/ C. vulgaris bio-oil ratio (4:1), catalyst concentration (300 mg) of synthesized lipase immobilized magnetic nanoparticles, and reaction time (6 h) under continuous stirring, the highest yield of C. vulgaris biodiesel was recorded as 87.6%. Besides, the lipase immobilized nano-bio catalyst used in the production process, was found to be highly efficient for about 5 to 6 cycles without any significant loss in the conversion efficiency. Finally, the evaluated fuel properties of the produced C. vulgaris biodiesel were in good agreement with ASTM D6751 standards.

Abstract:The shortage of energy and the aggravation of eutrophication are two major problems in China. The use of municipal wastewater to cultivate lipid-producing microalgae for the production of biodiesel not only reduces the production cost of biodiesel and alleviates energy shortage, but also mitigates eutrophication and protects the water environment. This study explored the effects of light, pH, and nutrients on the growth and lipid production of Scenedesmus obliquus, as well as the lipid production and pollutant removal capabilities of algae during microalgae cultivation in municipal wastewater at different treatment stages. The optimal conditions for the growth and lipid production of S. obliquus were determined as light intensity of 14,500 lx, total nitrogen (TN) content of 97 mg L−1, total phosphorus (TP) content of 11 mg L−1, and CO2 content of 9.8%. Under these optimal conditions, the lipid yield from microalgae was 0.367 g L−1, which was superior to other optimisation results in the literature. The total lipid yields of S. obliquus cultivated in the wastewater from the primary and secondary settling tanks were 0.38 g L−1 and 0.33 g L−1, respectively. The TN and TP removal rates were 99.8% and 83.1% from the wastewater of the primary settling tank, and 98.9% and 97.6% from the wastewater of the secondary settling tank, respectively. In addition, fluctuations in the quality of raw wastewater may lead to fluctuations in the final lipid yield, and a regulating tank should be used when necessary. In short, these results indicate the feasibility of cultivating lipid-producing microalgae in municipal wastewater for the production of biodiesel.

Abstract:Microalgae such as Chlorella vulgaris contain sufficient fatty acids to suggest their use as feedstocks for biodiesel production. Their capacity to remove nitrogen, phosphate, and other nutrients from a culture medium makes them a potentially useful element in urban wastewater treatment systems. A two-stage process was used to grow Chlorella vulgaris under mixotrophic and autotrophic conditions in artificial wastewater and urban wastewater media. Growth rate, nutrient removal, and lipids accumulation were quantified. Initially, the media were nitrogen-enriched (90 mg−1; Stage I), and then nitrogen limited (30, 20, and 10 mg l−1; Stage II). Growth was not inhibited under either of the culture conditions, and nitrogen uptake rates were above 90%. Total organic carbon removal was higher (56.2%–86%) under mixotrophic conditions than under photoautotrophic conditions (15.2%–69%). Lipids productivity was 2.7 times higher under mixotrophic conditions and nitrogen limitation than under photoautotrophic conditions and nitrogen limitation. Palmitic acid and linoleic acid accounted for 25.0% of total fatty acids contents, which is an adequate profile for biodiesel production. Culture of C. vulgaris in urban wastewater can improve the efficiency of nitrogen and total organic carbon removal, and water reuse, while simultaneously producing algal biomass with sufficient lipids content and an acceptable fatty acids profile for use as a biodiesel feedstock.

Abstract:The removal of heavy metals combined with biodiesel production by microalgae in a cost-effective way is a promising approach. Herein, we grew two green microalgal species, Chlorella sorokiniana and Scenedesmus acuminatus, in media contaminated with Cu 2+ (3.2 ppm) or Zn 2+ (65.4 ppm) to investigate their growth and full metabolic profile. Furthermore, to integrate the potential economic impact of biodiesel production with heavy metals removal efficiencies. Although acute exposure to heavy metals, on the other hand, reduced growth and increased removal efficiencies of Cu 2+ (59.4, 98.1%) and Zn 2+ (72.4, 98.2%) in C. sorokiniana and S. acuminatus , respectively. Besides, Cu 2+ and Zn 2+ increased primary metabolites, particularly lipids (49, 47% in S. acuminatus , 27, 26% in C. sorokiniana ), with a significant induction in the unsaturation levels. Indicating that C. sorokiniana and S. acuminatus are excellent phycoremediators for industrial drainage and future sustainable algal-biofuels platform. Economic assessment of daily 1000-tonne biodiesel production from S. acuminatus grown on highly polluted wastewater via Na 4 SiO 4 transesterification catalysis has all been assessed with an accuracy of ± 10% for the price of the diesel of US 430/tonne. The daily 1000 T algal diesel business was viable, with a return on high investment (16.4%) and a payback period of 5 years. According to break-even and sensitivity analyses, the algal diesel cost that makes this business viable should be greater than US 462/tonne. Brent Crude Oil Spot exceeds US$ 95/barrel indicating promising prospects for algal fuel industrialization. Furthermore, the protein and amino acids-based waste biomass may serve as a sustainable biorefienry platform for various biofuel industries through biomass conversion technologies.

Abstract:Microalgae has a great preponderance of fast growth rate and high oil contents. Mixed wastewater and industrial waste gas are utilized in this study as the microalgae's growing medium and resource of inorganic carbon. A combined study of waste usage and biomass energy development is conducted based on closed photobioreactor cultivation. With a focus on the cost of microalgal biodiesel, the financial benefits of waste treatment, the CO 2 absorption effect, and biodiesel yield, an assessment of the production process is conducted for different algae species under different energy supply situations. The experimental results indicate that Model algal species 3 (M3) are better adapted for the production of biodiesel with the situation of wind power. It has the algae generates 6800 L of algal liquid, 32.3 kg of microalgae, 42.27 kg of CO 2 emission reduction, and 12.47 kg of biodiesel in the single production cycle. The production of microalgae biodiesel based on photobioreactors can produce negative carbon emissions in the setting of a wind energy supply, and the total yearly biodiesel production in the same proliferation scale is at least 112.89 times that of open culture ponds. It has realized the sufficient coupling between waste utilization and biomass energy development through the development of microalgae biodiesel based on photobioreactor culture. It reduces the cost of biodiesel development and maintains high economic efficiency of waste disposal while producing negative carbon emissions. New theoretical guidance is provided by the target's advancement of renewable energy, carbon sequestration, and emission reduction, which has substantial effects on reducing pollution and enhancing significant ecological and environmental effects.

Abstract:BACKGROUNDLarge water footprint and nutrients demand are two of the major issues during microalgae cultivation. In this study, anaerobically digested swine manure was mixed with centrate at different minimal dilution multiples (2x, 3x, 4x, 6x and 8x), which was used as media to cultivate Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) for reducing the production cost of algae cultivation and balancing the nutrient profiles of culture media. RESULTSChlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) grew well on the mixed wastewaters with a biomass productivity of 132.2 to 440.3mgL(-1) d(-1). Nutrients in the mixed wastewaters were removed effectively by this alga, and the removal efficiencies of ammonium (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) ranged from 98.3, 46.9, 30.2 and 21.8 to 99.3, 71.4, 42.2 and 80.4%, respectively. Additionally, chemical compositions, such as pigments, carbohydrate, protein and lipids, in this alga varied with the change of dilution multiple due to the different nutrient profiles of culture media. Predicted properties of biodiesel from the oils of this alga satisfied the specifications of biodiesel, ASTM D6751-08 and EN 14214 standards. CONCLUSIONBiomass of C. vulgaris (UTEX 2714) can be used as a good-quality feedstock for biodiesel production when grown on mixed wastewaters. Abstract:Generally wastewater such agricultural runoff is considered a nuisance; however, it could be harnessed as a potential source of nutrients like nitrates and phosphates in integrated biorefinery context. In the current study, microalgae Chlorella sp. S5 was used for bioremediation of agricultural runoff and the leftover algal biomass was used as a potential source for production of biofuels in an integrated biorefinery context. The microalgae Chlorella sp. S5 was cultivated on Blue Green (BG 11) medium and a comprehensive optimization of different parameters including phosphates, nitrates, and pH was carried out to acquire maximum algal biomass enriched with high lipids content. Dry biomass was quantified using the solvent extraction technique, while the identification of nitrates and phosphates in agricultural runoff was carried out using commercial kits. The algal extracted lipids (oils) were employed in enzymatic trans-esterification for biodiesel production using whole-cell biomass of Bacillus subtilis Q4 MZ841642. The resultant fatty acid methyl esters (FAMEs) were analyzed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC–MS). Subsequently, both the intact algal biomass and its lipid-depleted algal biomass were used for biogas production within a batch anaerobic digestion setup. Interestingly, Chlorella sp. S5 demonstrated a substantial reduction of 95% in nitrate and 91% in phosphate from agricultural runoff. The biodiesel derived from algal biomass exhibited a noteworthy total FAME content of 98.2%, meeting the quality standards set by American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and European union (EU) standards. Furthermore, the biomethane yields obtained from whole biomass and lipid-depleted biomass were 330.34 NmL/g VS added and 364.34 NmL/g VS added , respectively. In conclusion, the findings underscore the potent utility of Chlorella sp. S5 as a multi-faceted resource, proficiently employed in a sequential cascade for treating agricultural runoff, producing biodiesel, and generating biogas within the integrated biorefinery concept.

Abstract:Generation of biodiesel from microalgae grown in wastewater can offer a cost-effective approach, whilst wastewaters usually do not contain the optimum concentrations of the essential nutrients and carbon sources that result in lowering the productivities of biomass and lipid. This study aimed to overcome this limitation by manipulating wastewater with various concentrations of nutrients (NO3-, PO43-, Cl- and SO42-) and three carbon sources either individually or in combination to cultivate Micractbaton reisseri for biodiesel production. Initially, various dilutions of wastewater were tested and a concentration up to 75% of wastewater showed the highest biomass productivity (0.076 g L-1 d(-1)) and lipid productivity (0.014 g L-1 d(-1)). The optimum manipulating conditions for maximum lipid production and the highest productivity required 50% decrease in phosphorous from the concentration of the control medium and supplementation with 1.0 g L-1 of glucose. Under this condition, biomass and lipid productivities increased by 1.7 and 4-folds, respectively, compared to those observed in the control. Furthermore, phosphorous starvation condition in the presence of glucose significantly improved fatty acid profile in the biomass and biodiesel quality related parameters.

Abstract:Algae have an ample potential to produce biodiesel from spent wash of food industry. In addition, it is cheaper and presents an environment friendly way to handle food industry wastewater. This study was conducted to optimize the growth of microalgal strains and to assess biodiesel production potential of algae using untreated food industry wastewater as a source of nutrients. The food industry wastewater was collected and analyzed for its physicochemical characteristics. Different dilutions (10, 20, 40, 80, and 100%) of this wastewater were made with distilled water, and growth of two microalgal strains (Cladophora sp. and Spyrogyra sp.) was recorded. Each type of wastewater was inoculated with microalgae, and biomass was harvested after 7 days. The growth of both strains was also evaluated at varying temperatures, pH and light periods to optimize the algal growth for enhanced biodiesel production. After optimization, biodiesel production by Spyrogyra sp. was recorded in real food industry wastewater. The algal biomass increased with increasing level of food industry wastewater and was at maximum with 100% wastewater. Moreover, statistically similar results were found with algal growth on 100% wastewater and also on Bristol’s media. The Cladophora sp. produced higher biomass than Spyrogyra sp. while growing on food industry wastewater. The optimal growth of both microalgal strains was observed at temperature 30 °C, pH: 8, light 24 h. Cladophora sp. was further evaluated for biodiesel production while growing on 100% wastewater and found that this strain produced high level of oil and biodiesel. Algae have an ample potential to produce biodiesel from spent wash of food industry. In addition, it is cheaper and presents an environment friendly way to handle food industry wastewater.

Abstract:The microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Tetraselmis chuii offer several attractive attributes as aquaculture feed. Biomass production of C. vulgaris and T. chuii is relatively expensive because it requires high operation and substrate cost. Use of food industry waste is one of the promising solutions to reduce the substrate cost. In this research the impact of diverse concentration was filtered and centrifuged, food wastewater (FWW) was scrutinized as an alternative intermediate for microalgal bioremediation, lipid yield and cell growth. C. vulgaris had superior lipid accumulation and cell growth at 75% level and T. chuii had enhanced lipid accumulation and cell growth at 75% with the most explicit growth rate (0.27 d − 1 ) and maximum biomass formation rate (0.1–0.18 gL − 1 d − 1 ) and lipid content (33.80 ± 0.88% and 35.04 ± 2.05%) respectively. The microalgae cells not only improved with FWW feeding and the level of COD (80.97–66.17%), BOD (81.13–66.81%), TN (55.88–22.06%) and certain heavy metals like zinc (99.72–99.52%) manganese (72.09–65.17%) nickel (50.68–34.41%), NO 3 N (50.68–42.59%) ferric (57.14–65.71%) cadmium (83.51–86.64%) lead (48.83–97.21%) and arsenic (55.13–55.00%) were efficiently removed from FWW at different dilution concentrations. C18:0/C18:1 were the major fatty acids in lipids which show a vast potential of microalgae for biodiesel fabrication and instantaneous bioremediation procedure using FWW.

Abstract:An integrated approach to nutrient recycling utilizing microalgae could provide feasible solutions for both environmental control and energy production. In this study, an axenic microalgae strain, Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 was evaluated for its potential as a biofuel feedstock and textile wastewater (TWW) treatment. The microalgae isolate was grown on TWW supplemented with different proportions of standard BG-11 medium varying from 0 to 100% (v/v). The results showed that TWW supplemented with 20% (v/v) BG11 medium demonstrated promising results in terms of Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 biomass (3.80 g L −1 ), lipid production (1.24 g L −1 ), nutrients (N/P, > 99%) and pollutant removal (chemical oxygen demand (COD), 99.05%). The COD level dropped by 90% after 4 days of cultivation, from 2,593.33 mg L −1 to 215 mg L −1 ; however, after day 6, the nitrogen (-NO 3 −1 ) and total phosphorus (TP) levels were reduced by more than 95%. The biomass-, total lipid- and carbohydrate- production, after 6 days of cultivation were 3.80 g L −1 , 1.24 g L −1 , and 1.09 g L −1 , respectively, which were 2.15-, 2.95- and 3.30-fold higher than Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 grown in standard BG-11 medium (control). In addition, as per the theoretical mass balances, 1 tonne biomass of Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 might yield 294.5 kg of biodiesel and 135.7 kg of bioethanol. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid were the dominant fatty acids found in the Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 lipid. This study illustrates the potential use of TWW as a microalgae feedstock with reduced nutrient supplementation (20% of TWW). Thus, it can be considered a promising feedstock for economical biofuel production.

Abstract:Microalgae have been identified as a promising option for simultaneous bioremediation of wastewater and production of valuable biomass (i.e., high value-added products and bioenergy). This study investigated the potential for applying microalgae-microalgae consortia to treat biogas slurry with high ammonia nitrogen (156.60 ± 1.32 mg·L −1 ) and pH (9.53 ± 0.23) value. Different co-culture systems were established using various microalgae (i.e., Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Tetradesmus obliquus ). The results indicated that co-cultivation of microalgae significantly enhanced the tolerance of microorganisms to biogas slurry and improved nutrient removal efficiencies. Particularly, C. vulgaris - C. pyrenoidosa - T. obliquus co-cultivation system performed best, leading to high removal efficiencies of 80.23 ± 0.45 %, 80.40 ± 0.57 %, and 68.54 ± 0.20 % for total nitrogen (TN), ammonium (NH 4 + -N) and total phosphorus (TP), respectively. Particularly, synergistic effects of this co-culture system on the increase in biomass growth was also observed, with dry weight of 0.410 ± 0.0071 g·L −1 . The highest extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) content (63.97 ± 0.21 mg·L −1 ) of C. vulgaris - C. pyrenoidosa - T. obliquus highlighted the crucial role of microalgal co-cultivation in stimulating the formation of microalgal aggregates, thereby enhancing the adaptability of microalgae to stressful environment associated with biogas slurry. Furthermore, this co-cultivated system facilitated the production of high value-added products, with protein and lipid contents of 37.53 ± 0.83 % and 31.33 ± 0.78 %, respectively. Fatty acid analysis revealed that co-culture-derived biodiesel could fulfill the standard specifications, reinforcing the fact that microalgae biomass could serve as a sustainable feedstock for biodiesel production. The findings of this study shed a light on the application potential of a microalgae-microalgae co-culture system for effectively treating biogas slurry.
