Abstract:The piggery digestate of high ammonia was mixed with the anoxic aerated effluent of high nitrate and phosphorus, to cultivate a microalgal-bacterial consortium for simultaneous pollution removal and resource recovery. The highest removal of total inorganic nitrogen was achieved at 324.77 mg/L in 40% piggery digestate mixed with 60% anoxic aerated effluent, along with the most microalgae biomass production. The crude protein and fatty acids of C14-C20 in microalgae cells were 21.80% and 69.78%, indicating that this mixing strategy could produce abundant microalgal biomass suitable for biofuel generation and animal feed. High-throughput sequencing showed that microbial diversity increased and Paenibacillus, Thiopseudomonas and Pseudomonas were the dominant species promoting microalgal growth. Overall, these results provided a new insight of mixing two types of wastewaters for cultivating microalgal-bacterial consortia, to remove contamination and recover nutrients simultaneously.
Growing Chlorella Vulgaris on Mixed Wastewaters for Biodiesel Feedstock Production and Nutrient Removal

Abstract:BACKGROUNDLarge water footprint and nutrients demand are two of the major issues during microalgae cultivation. In this study, anaerobically digested swine manure was mixed with centrate at different minimal dilution multiples (2x, 3x, 4x, 6x and 8x), which was used as media to cultivate Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) for reducing the production cost of algae cultivation and balancing the nutrient profiles of culture media. RESULTSChlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) grew well on the mixed wastewaters with a biomass productivity of 132.2 to 440.3mgL(-1) d(-1). Nutrients in the mixed wastewaters were removed effectively by this alga, and the removal efficiencies of ammonium (NH4+-N), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD) and total phosphorus (TP) ranged from 98.3, 46.9, 30.2 and 21.8 to 99.3, 71.4, 42.2 and 80.4%, respectively. Additionally, chemical compositions, such as pigments, carbohydrate, protein and lipids, in this alga varied with the change of dilution multiple due to the different nutrient profiles of culture media. Predicted properties of biodiesel from the oils of this alga satisfied the specifications of biodiesel, ASTM D6751-08 and EN 14214 standards. CONCLUSIONBiomass of C. vulgaris (UTEX 2714) can be used as a good-quality feedstock for biodiesel production when grown on mixed wastewaters. Abstract:The objective of this research was to develop large-scale technologies to produce oil-rich algal biomass from wastewater. The experiments were conducted using Erlenmeyer flasks and biocoil photobioreactor. Chlamydomonas reinhardtii was grown in artificial media and wastewaters taken from three different stages of the treatment process, namely, influent, effluent, and centrate. Each of wastewaters contained different levels of nutrients. The specific growth rate of C. reinhardtii in different cultures was monitored over a period of 10 days. The biomass yield of microalgae and associated nitrogen and phosphorous removal were evaluated. Effects of CO(2) and pH on the growth were also studied. The level of nutrients greatly influenced algae growth. High levels of nutrients seem to inhibit algae growth in the beginning, but provided sustained growth to a high degree. The studies have shown that the optimal pH for C. reinhardtii is in the range of 7.5. An injection of air and a moderate amount of CO(2) promoted algae growth. However, too much CO(2) inhibited algae growth due to a significant decrease in pH. The experimental results showed that algal dry biomass yield reached a maximum of 2.0 g L(-1) day(-1) in the biocoil. The oil content of microalgae of C. reinhardtii was 25.25% (w/w) in dry biomass weight. In the biocoil, 55.8 mg nitrogen and 17.4 mg phosphorus per liter per day were effectively removed from the centrate wastewater. Ferric chloride was found to be an effective flocculent that helps the algae settle for easy harvest and separation from the culture media.

Abstract:In order to utilize the excess sludge and reduce the cost of algal cultivation, Chlorella vulgaris was cultivated in increasing proportions of sludge extracts for simultaneous nutrients removal and algal utilization. Results showed that C. vulgaris cultivated in the 100% sludge extract gained the highest total biomass (33.98 +/- 0.30 x 10(6) cells/mL) and showed good results in TOC (absolute value 175 mg/L) and nutrients (TN: 77.1%; TP: 95.0%) removals. According to the Excitation-emission matrix spectra (EEMs) analysis, the 8th day was suggested as the optimal time for biomass harvesting. Although the lipid contents showed a negative correlation with the proportion of sludge extract, the FAME analysis showed that the saturated fatty acids (SFA) contents decreased and the unsaturated fatty acids (UFA) content increased as the concentration of sludge extract increased. The 100% sludge extract could be a desirable alternative medium for the algae cultivation.
Nutrients removal from wastewater by microalga Chlorella sp. coupled to augmented lipid production with spent wastewater utilized by cyanobacterium Fischerella muscicola TISTR 8215 for hydrogen production

Abstract:Wastewater from different sources with excessive nutrient loading, which is a major contributor to eutrophication, can be a promising medium alternative for microalgae cultivation with effective removal of NH 4 + -N, PO 4 3- -P and organic matter. In this study, three groups of synthetic wastewater (SWW), an ammonium-rich stream (60 to 250 mg L -1 NH 4 + ) containing a specific type of organic matter, such as petroleum effluent (SWW1: 300 mg L -1 glucose and 10 mg L -1 phenol), molasses wastewater (SWW2: 600 mg L -1 glucose), and agro-industrial wastewater (SWW3: no organic matters) were used for growing Chlorella sp. and for investigating its potential for nutrient removal as well as the production of biomass and lipid. The findings showed that Chlorella sp. grown in SWW2 (i.e., the auto/mixotrophic culture with 14 days) served as efficient feedstock for lipid production, and showed the maximum lipid content and yield of 53 % DCW and 188 mg L -1 , respectively. Additionally, the maximum removal of 76 % NH 4 + -N was observed under this condition. Higher removal of NH 4 + -N with 100 % efficiency was seen in Chlorella sp. under SWW1 and SWW3 conditions. However, under SWW2 the cells had higher NH 4 + uptake rate than that under SWW1 and SWW3, resulting in highest biomass productivity in SWW2 grown cells. The spent media after Chlorella sp. cultivation were used for growing the N 2 -fixing cyanobacterium Fischerella muscicola TISTR 8215 for the production of hydrogen. Among different spent media, F. muscicola TISTR 8215 cultivated in SWW1 spent medium obtained from 7-day Chlorella sp. cultivation had the highest hydrogen production of 200.8 μmol H 2 mg -1 chlorophyll a . Overall, the present study employed biorefinery approach using the microalga biomass as feedstock for lipid production with subsequent utilization of spent medium for growing the cyanobacterium for enhanced production of hydrogen.

Abstract:Natural resources are becoming increasingly scarce, and the need to control their consumption and recycle their use is growing. Water is one of the essential resources for human survival. Therefore, there has been an increasing interest in ways to save, recycle and treat water supplies. Aquaculture is one of the most polluting activities as it produces a significant wastewater volume, which needs proper treatment before being discharged into the environment or recycled. Microalgae are a potential solution for wastewater treatment. Due to their numerous advantages, the use of microalgal biomass is being studied, and, at present, there is already a market and room for profit in the sale of microalgal components in various forms, such as animal and human supplements. From a biorefinery point of view, it is important to take advantage of all the qualities and benefits that microalgae have by combining their great capacity to treat wastewater and exploit the produced biomass, analysing its composition for subsequent valorisation, for example. In this study, Chlorella vulgaris was used to treat aquaculture wastewater from a trout farm aquaculture facility, and the treatment efficiency was evaluated. To valorise the resulting biomass, its composition was also assessed. C. vulgaris successfully grew in the effluent with growth rates of 0.260 ± 0.014 d−1 and with average productivity of 32.9 ± 1.6 mg L−1 d−1. The achieved removal efficiencies were 93.5 ± 2.1% for total nitrogen, 98.0 ± 0.1% for nitrate-nitrogen and 92.7 ± 0.1% for phosphate-phosphorus. Concerning biomass composition, the lipids (15.82 ± 0.15%), carbohydrates (48.64 ± 0.83%), and pigment contents (0.99 ± 0.04% for chlorophyll a + b and 0.21 ± 0.04% for carotenoids) were similar to the values of similar studies. However, the protein content obtained (17.93 ± 1.21%) was lower than the ones mentioned in the literature.

Abstract:For energy-efficient treatment of anaerobic digestate by biological methods, we constructed the native microalgae-bacterial symbiosis systems ( Chlorella sp.- Lysinibacillus sp. and Chlamydomonas sp.- Shinella sp.), as well as investigated their nutrient removal, biomass output and chemical composition, and microbial activity during anaerobic digestate treatment. Co-cultures of microalgae and bacteria promoted the synthesis of unsaturated fatty acids, enhanced the tolerance of microorganisms to toxic substances in wastewater, improved photosynthesis of microalgae, and reduced cell mortality. Specifically, bacteria promoted the growth and metabolism of microalgae and further improved the carbon reduction capacity of the system by 22.37%. A ratio of 50:1 in group Chlorella sp.- Lysinibacillus sp. was obtained for the best performance on biomass yield (0.85 g‧L −1 ) and pollutant removal efficiencies: TOC (48.67%), IC (85.19%), NH 4 + -N (98.55%), TN (80.35%) and TP (40.62%). The group Chlamydomonas sp.- Shinella sp. achieved the highest biomass yield (1.05 g‧L −1 ) and the maximum pollutant removal (TOC: 39.05%, IC: 85.92%, NH 4 + -N: 97.82%, TN: 83.32%, TP: 39.25%) at a ratio of 20:1. This study provides an environmentally-friendly strategy with low carbon emission and energy consumption for anaerobic digestate purification.

Abstract:In this work, a cultivation system with daily recycling of the post-harvest culture broth was set up and performed in order to reuse the water and nutrients in pretreated anaerobically digested swine manure, which was used as media to cultivate Chlorella vulgaris (UTEX 2714) at different recycling ratios. Results showed that the alga grew well in the system with an accumulative algal biomass and productivity of 1.68-3.47g/L and 234.1-532.2mg/L/d, respectively, at the end of the cultivation. Additionally, chemical compositions in this alga varied with the change of recycling ratios, and the highest productivities of carbohydrate, protein and lipids (76.4, 257.2 and 183.7mg/L/d, respectively) were obtained in the system with a recycling ratio of 1/4 or 1/6. Fatty acid profiles indicated that this alga could be used as a good-quality biodiesel feedstock with a biodiesel productivity of 9.65-40.1mg/L/d.

Abstract:An integrated approach to nutrient recycling utilizing microalgae could provide feasible solutions for both environmental control and energy production. In this study, an axenic microalgae strain, Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 was evaluated for its potential as a biofuel feedstock and textile wastewater (TWW) treatment. The microalgae isolate was grown on TWW supplemented with different proportions of standard BG-11 medium varying from 0 to 100% (v/v). The results showed that TWW supplemented with 20% (v/v) BG11 medium demonstrated promising results in terms of Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 biomass (3.80 g L −1 ), lipid production (1.24 g L −1 ), nutrients (N/P, > 99%) and pollutant removal (chemical oxygen demand (COD), 99.05%). The COD level dropped by 90% after 4 days of cultivation, from 2,593.33 mg L −1 to 215 mg L −1 ; however, after day 6, the nitrogen (-NO 3 −1 ) and total phosphorus (TP) levels were reduced by more than 95%. The biomass-, total lipid- and carbohydrate- production, after 6 days of cultivation were 3.80 g L −1 , 1.24 g L −1 , and 1.09 g L −1 , respectively, which were 2.15-, 2.95- and 3.30-fold higher than Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 grown in standard BG-11 medium (control). In addition, as per the theoretical mass balances, 1 tonne biomass of Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 might yield 294.5 kg of biodiesel and 135.7 kg of bioethanol. Palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid were the dominant fatty acids found in the Chlorella sorokiniana ASK25 lipid. This study illustrates the potential use of TWW as a microalgae feedstock with reduced nutrient supplementation (20% of TWW). Thus, it can be considered a promising feedstock for economical biofuel production.

Abstract:Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris, Scenedesmus obliquus, and Monoraphidium sp were cultivated in effluent from the household appliance industry as an alternative medium for bioremediation due to the high variability of chemical and biological substances in wastewater. The experiments were carried out using biological effluent (BE), chemical effluent (CE), and a combination of the two (MIX). The results showed a maximum biomass yield of 1056 mg/L (± 0.216) in the BE cultivation of the microalga Scenedesmus obliquus, 969 mg/L (± 0.20) in the BE of the microalga Monoraphidium sp. and 468 mg/L (± 0.46) in the CE of Chlorella vulgaris. In addition, they showed removal (100%) in the CE and MIX for cultivation with Chlorella vulgaris and 100% BE and 75% MIX with Monoraphidium sp For the (75.3%, 99% e 97.9%) in the cultures with C. vulgaris BE, CE, and MIX respectively, with Monoraphidium sp. 58% in BE and 42% in CE and MIX. With S. obliquus , 100% removal was observed in all 3 treatments. Metal removal was also observed. The C. vulgaris culture showed lipid contents of 16%, 12%, and 17% for BE, CE, and MIX, respectively. For Monoraphidium sp., 14.5% for BE, 16% for CE, and 14% for MIX. In the culture of S. obliquus, 17%, 15.5%, and 16.5% for BE, CE, and MIX, respectively.

Abstract:Microalgae cultivation in anaerobic food wastewater was a feasible way for high biomass production and nutrients recycling. In this study, Chlorella pyrenoidosa culture on anaerobic food wastewater was processed outdoors using a pilot-scale tubular photobioreactor. The microalgae showed rapid growth in different seasons, achieving high biomass production of 1.83-2.10 g·L-1 and specific growth rate of 0.73-1.59 d-1. The biological contamination and dissolved oxygen were controlled at suitable levels for algal growth in the tubular photobioreactor. Lipids content in harvested biomass was 8.1-15.3% of dried weight, and the analysis in fatty acids revealed high quality with long carbon chain length and high saturation. Additionally, algal growth achieved effective pollutants purification from wastewater, removing 42.3-53.8% of CODCr, 82.6-88.7% of TN and 59.7-67.6% of TP. This study gave a successful application for scaled-up microalgae culture in anaerobic food processing wastewater for biodiesel production and wastewater purification.

Abstract:Anaerobically treated slaughterhouse effluent is rich in nutrients, organic matter, and cause eutrophication if discharged to the environment without proper further treatment. Moreover, phosphorus and nitrogen in agro-processing industry wastewaters are mainly removed in the tertiary treatment phase. The objective of this study is to evaluate the pollutant removal efficiency of Chlorella and Scenedesmus species as well as their co-culture treating two-phase anaerobic digester effluent through microalgae biomass production. The dimensions of the rectangular photobioreactor used to conduct the experiment are 15 cm in height, 20 cm in width, and 30 cm in length. Removal efficiencies between 86.74–93.11%, 96.74–97.47%, 91.49–92.91%, 97.94–99.46%, 89.22–94.28%, and 91.08–95.31% were attained for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, nitrate, ammonium, total phosphorous, and orthophosphate by Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture, respectively. The average biomass productivity and biomass yield of Chlorella species, Scenedesmus species, and their co-culture were 1.4 ± 0.1, 1.17 ± 0.12, 1.5 ± 0.13 g/L, and 0.18, 0.21, and 0.23 g/L*day, respectively. The final effluent quality in terms of chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, and total phosphorous attained by Chlorella species and the co-culture were below the permissible discharge limit for slaughterhouse effluent standards in the country (Ethiopia). The results of the study showed that the use of microalgae as well as their co-culture for polishing the nutrients and residual organic matter in the anaerobically treated agro-processing industry effluent offers a promising result for wastewater remediation and biomass production. In general, Chlorella and Scenedesmus species microalgae and their co-culture can be applied as an alternative for nutrient removal from anaerobically treated slaughterhouse wastewater as well as biomass production that can be used for bioenergy.

Abstract:Growth rate of the microalga Chlorella PY-ZU1 mutated by nuclear irradiation was optimised for use in the purification of undiluted anaerobic digestion effluent of swine manure (UADESM) with 3745 mg L (1) chemical oxygen demand (COD) and 1135 mg L (1) total nitrogen content. The problem of accessible carbon in UADESM was solved by continuous introduction of 15% (v/v) CO2. Adding phosphorus to UADESM and aeration of UADESM before inoculation both markedly reduced the lag phase of microalgal growth. In addition, the biomass yield and average growth rate of Chlorella PY-ZU1 increased significantly to 4.81 g L (1) and 601.2 mg L (1) d (1), respectively, while the removal efficiencies of total phosphorus, COD and ammonia nitrogen increased to 95%, 79% and 73%, respectively. Thus, the findings indicate that Chlorella PY-ZU1 can be used for effective purification of UADESM, while the biomass can be safely used as animal feed supplement. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Intensive aquaculture production generates large amounts of sludge. This waste could be considered as a potential source of nutrients that can be recovered and utilized. Little attention has been paid to nutrient recovery from fish sludge. In this study, bioconversion of sludge was evaluated in lab scale under anaerobic (AN), facultative anaerobic (FA) and aerobic (AE) conditions. After 40 days of fermentation, AN recovered the highest values of dissolved total nitrogen (82.7 mg L −1 ), while AE showed the highest dissolved total phosphorus (11.8 mg L −1 ) and the highest reduction of total suspended solids (36.0 %). Microbial analysis showed that AN exhibited a distinct bacterial community than that of FA and AE. Furthermore, C. sorokiniana grown in AN effluents collected after 12 days of fermentation achieved the highest biomass production (1.96 g L −1 ). These results suggest that AN has the best potential to recover nutrients from sludge for production of C. sorokiniana .

Abstract:Microalgae-based technology has attracted increasing attention due to its high efficiency for simultaneous purification of anaerobic digestion slurry and the enhanced purity of biogas. For realizing high nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies, a Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont was constructed in the current work. The symbiotic system displayed complementary effects and co-metabolism of Chlorella vulgaris and Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria, in which Ganoderma lucidum /endophytic bacteria could stimulate the growth of symbiont. Moreover, the compounds produced from the photosynthesis of microalgae were beneficial to the growth of Ganoderma lucidum and endophytic bacteria. The results suggested that the constructed Chlorella vulgaris − Ganoderma lucidum −endophytic bacteria symbiont displayed the best photosynthetic performance with the addition of 10 −9 M GR24 under a mixed wavelength ratio (red:blue) of 5:5 and a light/dark cycle of 14-h:10-h. Meanwhile, the highest nutrients/CO 2 removal efficiencies were obtained under the abovementioned optimal conditions, and had values of 84.09 ± 8.12%, 83.57 ± 8.12%, 85.19 ± 7.97% and 69.34 ± 6.62% for chemical oxygen demand, total nitrogen, total phosphorus and CO 2 , respectively. The work provides a theoretical foundation for future scale-up of wastewater treatment and enhancement of biogas upgrading, especially in terms of co-culture of microalgae with bacteria/fungi and light control strategies.

Abstract:Following the circular bioeconomy approach, this study shows the possibility of effective microalgal bioremediation of aquaculture wastewater integrated with the production of protein-rich biomass, which can be used as a feed additive. Screening was carried out among strains of Chlorella vulgaris BB-2, Parachlorella kessleri Bh-2 and Chlamydomonas reinhardtii C-124 with the aim of selecting the strain which is characterized by high indicators of growth in the fish farms wastewaters. Among these three strains, C. vulgaris BB-2 was selected due to its increased growth rate in aquaculture wastewater with ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate and phosphate removal. In addition, in the water when cultivating microalgae in it the coliform index and total microbial number decreased to 5 and 1.8 × 10 3 colony-forming unit cm −3 . Large-scale microalgae cultivation utilizing aquaculture wastewater gave biomass production of 43.5 mg L −1 day −1 . The biochemical composition analysis of the aquaculture wastewater phycoremediation-derived biomass of C. vulgaris BB-2 revealed that the content of 57.0 ± 1.2% protein, 16 ± 1.2% lipid, and 11.4 ± 1.4% carbohydrate. The obtained data indicate that the lipid extract of microalgae C. vulgaris BB-2 contained saturated 30.7% and polyunsaturated fatty acids 69.3%. The main fraction of amino acids consisted of glutamic acid, lysine, aspartic acid and leucine. The utilization of 25% microalgal biomass as a feed additive in the diet of fish has shown a positive effect on the morpho-physiological and biochemical growth parameters and intestinal microflora of Nile tilapia ( Oreochromis niloticus ).
