Abstract:This work reports on the effect of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio (25, 38, 50 and 80) on the physicochemical properties and performance of PtSnK/ZSM-5 catalysts in butanes aromatization process. It was found that the Pt dispersion decreased obviously with SiO2/Al2O3 increasing. The strength and type of acid sites look similar, while the redox properties were influenced significantly. The Pt–SnOx species are produced except for PtSnK/ZSM-5-80 with large separated Pt ensembles from H2-TPD analysis. The PtSnK/ZSM-5-50 catalyst shows the improved cofeeding (mixed butanes: 50 wt% n-butane + 50 wt% i-butane) conversion (88%) with lower Pt dispersion (25%). Furthermore, dehydrogenation of mixed butanes over Pt–SnOx is more favorable on PtSnK/ZSM-5-50 when both ratios of benzene/C8 aromatics and methane/propane are high, due to the outside contact time is short. So the influence of SiO2/Al2O3 ratio on the aromatics distribution is mainly related to the difference in the Pt dispersion and distribution. However, the predominate process to produce light aromatics (BTX) is still hydrogen transfer, which contributes to the long-life span.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Abstract Aromatic hydrocarbons are essential compounds, that the presence of which in fuels can improve the octane number. The conversion of the light alkanes to high value aromatics is vital from theoretical and industrial standpoints. Zeolites such as ZSM-5 play an essential role in the aromatization of light alkanes. This paper highlights the mechanism of aromatization of light alkanes such as methane, ethane, propane, butane, and its isomers. Furthermore, effective factors on the aromatization of light alkanes including metal type, crystallinity, acidity, space velocity, pretreatment of zeolites, co-feeding of light hydrocarbon, and operating factors such as temperature have been investigated to determine how a system of zeolite with metals can be useful to reach aromatization with high conversion.
Aromatization of n-C7 ~ n-C9 Alkanes on Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) Catalyst

Abstract:Alkane aromatization is a significant supplementary route for the preparation of value-added aromatic products. Although ZSM-5 zeolites have been widely used in alkanes aromatization, they always exhibit low catalytic stability, due to the diffusion limitation of medium-pore structure, resulting in rapid deactivation. Moreover, the excessive strong acid sites of ZSM-5 also induce serious cracking reaction. To overcome these issues, the pore structure and acidic property of ZSM-5 zeolite were controllably regulated using ammonium hexafluorosilicate (AHFS) and potassium carbonate (K2CO3) post-treatment method. After loading Pt, the Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) catalyst showed aromatic selectivity as high as 75.4%, with n-heptane conversion of 96.1%, at 550 °C and ambient pressure. More importantly, the catalytic lifetime reached 234 h. Even for the aromatization of n-octane and n-nonane with larger molecular size, the Pt/KZSM-5(deAl) still gave high aromatic selectivity of 82.7% and 83.4%, and n-octane and n-nonane conversion of 92.8% and 87.1%, along with the catalytic lifetime higher than 80 h. The results of XRD, N2 sorption, NH3-TPD, Py-IR, TEM/STEM, H2-TPR, CO-DRIFT and XPS indicated that using AHFS and K2CO3 post-treatment can not only produce more mesoporous to facilitate the diffusion of aromatic products, but also reduce the amount and strength of strong acid sites in ZSM-5 to avoid the over-cracking reaction. Moreover, the generated defect sites due to dealumination and the residual potassium ions (K+) on zeolite enhanced the interaction between Pt and ZSM-5 zeolite that effectively suppresses the aggregation and sintering of Pt particles.

Abstract:Development of a high-performance naphtha aromatization catalyst has been paid many attentions as this reaction is generally employed to elevate the octane number of FCC gasoline and Fischer-Tropsch-synthesized oil. Here, a hierarchical porous Pt/Kβ catalyst is developed. It shows much higher activity, selectivity and stability than conventional Pt/KL. The catalytic performance of Pt/Kβ depends on Brϕnsted acidity and mesoporosity of zeolite β and nanoparticles (NPs) size and electronic state of Pt. The catalytic mechanism was investigated by combining TPSR, GC–MS, reaction kinetic studies and DFT calculations. Pt NPs catalyze dehydrogenations of alkanes/cycloalkenes to alkenes and dienes, while Brϕnsted acid sites facilitate alkene cyclization and ring-expansion of cycloalkenes despite that they can also dehydrogenate alkanes/alkenes through hydrogen transfer reactions. The n-heptane is mainly aromatized by dehydrogenating to 1-heptene and 2-heptene, 1,6- and 1,5-cyclizing into methylcyclohexane and ethyl-cyclopentane, and successively ring-expanding and/or dehydrogenating to toluene that may be further dealkylated to benzene.

Abstract:Engineering the chemical environment of active metal phase plays vital role for the alkane reforming, yet great challenges remain. Herein, ABC-type atomic layer deposition (ALD) with methanol as surface modifier was considered to regulate the distribution of metallic Pt on KY zeolite to obtain high-efficient catalysts for n-alkane reforming. The pre-adsorbed methanol occupied the reactive sites of Pt precursors on the external surface of KY zeolite, and thus trapped Pt clusters inside the zeolite cages. The obtained catalyst (Pt/KYC2) exhibited enhanced n-octane aromatization performances with aromatics selectivity up to 78.9% and the proportion of C8 aromatics among total aromatics reached up to 97%. Systematic characterizations revealed that the addition of potassium eliminated the acidity of Y zeolite and induced the formation of electron-rich Pt clusters inside cages, which inhibited the side reactions effectively. Meanwhile, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature programmed desorption (TPD) demonstrated that the Pt clusters inside cages contributed to the initial dehydrogenation and the adsorption of intermediates (1-octene and 2-octene), promoting the dehydrocyclization process. These findings paved a way for engineering the location of Pt clusters, and provided prospective catalytic system to obtain C8 aromatics (ethylbenzene and o-xylene) from naphtha reforming.

Abstract:Atomic layer deposition (ALD) is an efficient method to confine the Pt particles in the channels of KL zeolite to improve the durability of catalysts. However, the diffusion of metal precursors is impeded by the size of micropore. Herein, using polyethylene glycol (PEG) as zeolite growth modifier to limit the growth of KL zeolite in [001] direction, a unique KL zeolite with trimodal porosity (native and larger micropores, mesopores) was successfully synthesized. Hierarchically porous structure engineered the spatial location of Pt precursor during ALD process. The obtained micro/mesoporous structure favored the diffusion of the Pt precursor into the pores of KL zeolite, and led to the formation of highly dispersed Pt clusters in micropores, mesopores, and intersection of micro/mesopores of KL zeolite. The resultant Pt/KLP2 catalyst showed the enhanced n-heptane aromatization performances operated at low temperature (420 °C). Systematic characterizations reveal the synergetic effect of spatial environment of hierarchical porous KL zeolite promoted the n-heptane aromatization and molecular diffusion. Namely, micropores enhanced the n-heptane dehydrocyclization, and the mesopores with shortened diffusion length facilitated the mass transport of aromatics and inhibited secondary hydrogenolysis efficiently. The present work broadens the fundamental understanding of the role of zeolite channels for alkane reforming reactions.

Abstract:The aromatization of alkanes is an important process for improving the quality of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) gasoline and producing high-valued aromatics from naphtha; however, currently available catalysts in this regard are often deficient due to the low aromatics yield and short lifetime. In this work, a series of hierarchically structured Beta (Beta-HS) zeolites with high crystallinity and meso-porosity were synthesized by steam treatment with various organosilanes as pore-forming reagent and ethanol as solvent. The nano-sized Beta-HS zeolites were further modified with K through ion-exchange and with Pt through incipient wetness impregnation; the resultant Pt/K-Beta-HS catalysts were then used in the aromatization of n-heptane. The results indicate that the abundant mesopores present in Beta-HS are conducive to the diffusion of reactants and products, whilst the modification with K is able to passivate the strong Brønsted acid sites and the loading of Pt metal can promote the dehydrogenation of alkanes and cycloalkanes, which can effectively suppress the cracking and carbonaceous deposition reactions and enhance the dehydrogenation aromatization activity. As a result, the Pt/K-Beta-HS catalysts exhibit excellent performance in the aromatization of n-heptane, with a much longer lifetime (205 h), higher selectivity to aromatics (80%) and larger turnover number of aromatic products (Pt-based TON, 240 × 103) than conventional Beta zeolites. These results prove that the steam treatment with organosilanes as pore-forming reagent is a facile and cost-effective strategy to synthesize the hierarchically structured Beta zeolites and after loading K and Pt, the Pt/K-Beta-HS zeolites can be an efficient catalyst for the conversion of n-heptane to aromatics.

Abstract:The composite solid oxide super acid Pt-SO4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 catalyst was prepared, and its structure, surface properties and catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction were investigated by XRD, XPS, SEM, FT-IR. The results showed that the optimum A12O3 loading in the catalyst made ZrO2 tetragonal phase stable, prevented the transformation of ZrO2 from tetragonal phase to monoclinic phase. Pt doping on SO 4 2- /ZrO2-Al2O3 improved the catalytic activities for n-butane isomerization reaction. When the content of Al was 1.5% in the catalyst, the yield of i-butane was 37%, and its selectivity reached 70% above.
Influence of Structure and Acidity-Basicity of Zeolites on Platinum Supported Catalysts of N-C6 Aromatization

Abstract:L, Y zeolites were used as carrier to support Pt, and the catalytic properties of the supported Pt catalysts in n-hexane aromatization were investigated. The pore system of L zeolite proved to be beneficial for Pt clusters, exhibiting a high benzene selectivity in n-hexane aromatization. The secondary pores of zeolite L had a negative influence on the aromatization over Pt/BaKL. With these secondary pores blocked, the 0.4% Pt/BaKL-I sample could keep up with the excellent aromatization properties of 0.6% Pt/BaKL zeolite. Pt dispersed on KL basic zeolite exhibited dehydrogenation activity in isopropanol decomposition. Pt supported on NH4L acidic zeolite enhanced the conversion of isopropanol to form water and propene. IR results of linear CO adsorbed on Pt/L zeolites suggested the Pt on NH4L acidic zeolite was “electron deficient”, and Pt on KL basic zeolite exhibited some electron excess, which results from the interaction of Pt and zeolites with different acidic-basic properties.

Abstract:Modification of KL zeolite by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) of Si(OEt)(4) and (CH3)(3)SiOSi(CH3)(3) was used to study the influence of zeoltie support on the aromatization of n-hexane over Pt/KL catalyst. The pore size and pore volume of zeolite were decreased by CVD. The acidic hydroxyl groups remaining on the surface of KL zeolite were removed and thus the selectivity of non-acidic catalyzed aromatization reaction was improved. Whereas the activity of aromatiztion reaction was decreased due to the destruction of some of active sites in KL zeolite for 1,6-cyclization. Becuase of the coverage of the framework of zeolite by CVD of SiO2, Pt particles became more electron-excess. Therefore, the silica-coated catalysts were easier to be poisoned by sulphur.

Abstract:Fresh and used Pt/ KL catalysts were characterized by a variety of techniques to compare their properties, such as surface area, pore volume, crystalline phase, carbon deposition and Pt particle size. Results showed that the deactivation of Pt/KL catalysts for alkane aromatization were mainly caused by the channel blockage of zeolite due to coke deposits and the agglomeration of fine Pt crystals. The influence of coke burning temperature on the catalyst performance was investigated and the results showed that the surface area, pore volume and catalytic performance of the regenerated catalyst were significantly improved. Coke burning at moderate temperature, such as 370 °C, could suppress the agglomeration of Pt crystals and resulted in good regenerated catalyst performance.

Abstract:Despite thorough exploration of the acidity properties and pore structure effects of zeolite catalysts on catalytic conversion, a comprehensive understanding of how these factors influence reaction pathways is still lacking. Herein, three common zeolites (ZSM-5, ZSM-22 and ZSM-48) of different shapes and size dimensions were introduced into catalytic conversion of isobutane, with combination of X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2 adsorption and desorption, solid-state 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, ammonia temperature programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and pyridine adsorption infrared spectroscopy (Py-FTIR) to characterize their structure and acidity. And channels and topologies were associated with stability and catalytic activity. ZSM-5 performed best, showing the most active sites. Furthermore, ZSM-48 led to an increase in the propene yield by suppressing inhibitory secondary reactions in the monomolecular reaction pathway. Moreover, the amount of Brønsted acid sites (BASs) of ZSM-22 were a key factor in promoting light alkene formation. However, 1D channels contributed to the deactivation of ZSM-22 and ZSM-48. The detailed reaction pathways of zeolite catalysts with diverse pore structures and acidities are crucial for optimizing their catalytic performance.
Fully-Exposed Pt Cluster@Zeolite Catalysts for Efficient N-Hexane Aromatization

Abstract:The exploration of Pt cluster catalysts with minimal or fully exposed Pt atoms for specific reactions is meaningful but challenging, aiming to maximize Pt atomic utilization. To answer the above question, we design 4Pt cluster catalysts within a KL zeolite (Pt-n@KL, n represents Pt atom numbers) for an n-hexane aromatization (n-HAM) reaction. Pt species in Pt-n@KL are identified as Pt-1, and Pt-4, Pt-9, and Pt-13 clusters, respectively; the corresponding Pt-Pt coordination number ranges from 0, 2, 3.3 to 4.5. When tested in n-HAM at 440 degrees C, Pt-4@KL shows the highest benzene yield of 85.7 % with similar to 100 % conversion and superior durability up to 600 h. In-situ characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrate that the optimal Ptn@KL CTs towards n-HAM is a fully exposed Pt cluster with CNPt-Pt of 2.
Influence of intracrystalline diffusion constraints enhanced by channel fluctuation on zeolite catalyst performance in isomerization and aromatization

Abstract:In the realm of zeolite catalysis, understanding the role of intracrystalline diffusion constraints is of paramount significance, especially in the context of isomerization and aromatization reactions. This study delves deep into the structure-performance relationships, shedding light on the profound impact of channel fluctuation on isomerization and aromatization performance. Through meticulous analysis, we scrutinized the intracrystalline diffusion constraints of olefin intermediates integral to these reactions. ZSM-5, ZSM-22, Beta, and ZSM-12 zeolites, while possessing similar crystallinity, Si/Al ratio, acidity, and diffusion path length, display distinct channel fluctuations. Insightful in situ infrared desorption experiments coupled with molecular dynamic simulations underscore that these channel fluctuations intensify the intracrystalline diffusion constraints of olefin intermediates via an entropic trapping effect. Consequently, the isomers selectivity in n -octane isomerization adopts the sequence of Pt/Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-5 < Pt/Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-22 < Pt/Al 2 O 3 -Beta < Pt/Al 2 O 3 -ZSM-12, inversely correlating with channel fluctuation. This arises from the acceleration of undesired β-scission of olefin intermediates by intracrystalline diffusion constraints accentuated by channel fluctuation, leading to cracking by-products. Contrarily, the aromatic selectivity in 1-octene aromatization mirrors the opposite trend: ZSM-5 > ZSM-22 > Beta > ZSM-12, directly associating with channel fluctuation. This owes to the augmented intracrystalline diffusion constraints fostering the cyclization and hydrogen transfer of olefin intermediates, culminating in aromatic products. This study presents an in-depth investigation into how the diffusion constraints related to channel fluctuation influence product selectivity across different zeolite catalysts, offering valuable insights for future research and application in heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The influence of hollow ZSM-5 catalysts prepared with two different kinds of alkalis on catalytic performances in methanol to aromatics was studied. It was found that benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) selectivities of hollow catalysts were higher than the parent ZSM-5 catalyst due to increasing mesopore volumes and acid strength. Meanwhile, the catalyst prepared by NaOH treatment exhibited higher BTX selectivity than the catalyst prepared by tetrapropylammonium hydroxide treatment. The reason was that the concentration of strong acid sites, Brønsted acid sites, and framework alumina in channel crossings was higher than that of the catalyst prepared by NaOH treatment. All these favored the formation of aromatics. Moreover, the introduction of hollow structures with mesopores improved diffusion behaviors of species and reduced the deactivation rate of the catalysts. However, a relatively higher deactivation rate was obtained over the NaOH-treated sample due to increasing strong acid sites.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Hydroisomerization of long-chain n-alkanes plays a vital role in petrochemical and coal chemical industries, because it can produce high-quality hydrocarbon fuels and lubricant base oils. ZSM-48 (0.56 ×0.53 nm) and ZSM-22 (0.57 nm×0.46 nm) are characteristic of one-dimensional 10-ring zeolites suitable for n-alkane hydroisomerization reaction. Here, the effect of the structure difference between ZSM-48 and ZSM-22 zeolites on hydroisomerization is titrated by the isobutane and n-dodecane. The product distribution of hydroisomerization of isobutane to n-butane shows the reaction pathway on Pt/ZSM-48 and Pt/ZSM-22, in which the monomolecular hydroisomerization of isobutane is involved within the active sites in zeolite channels, while the polymerization-cracking bimolecular reaction occurs on the pore-mouth of zeolite. Pt/ZSM-48 zeolite, possessing larger channel and aperture size than those of Pt/ZSM-22, is more conducive to the diffusion of butane molecules and bimolecular polymerization. Therefore, the isobutane conversion (14 %) on Pt/ZSM-48 produces less C 1 +C 2 (1.73 wt% vs. 3.41 wt%) and more C 3 +C 5 +C 8 (19.22 wt% vs. 16.92 wt%). For the hydroisomerization of n-dodecane, the iso-dodecane selectivity of Pt/ZSM-48 (43.32 wt%) is significantly higher than that of Pt/ZSM-22 (12.38 wt%) at the similar n-C 12 conversion (40 %). Compare with the isomers of Pt/ZSM-22, the mono-branched isomers with methyl near the middle of the chains and multi-branched isomers are more easily formed on Pt/ZSM-48, which is conducive to the "key-lock" catalysis mechanism. The larger pore size of ZSM-48 is conducive to n-C 12 insertion into zeolite pores, methyl migration and isomer diffusion, and its adjacent pores are more compatible with double-branched isomers. In addition, a high selectivity of C 4 ∼C 5 alkanes (53.2 wt%) on Pt/ZSM-22 and a high selectivity of C 6 ∼C 9 alkanes (44.7 wt%) on Pt/ZSM-48 show obvious difference in cracking product distribution, implying different position of methyl groups in i-C 12 methyl on Pt/ZSM-22 and Pt/ZSM-48 samples, respectively. The present comparison between Pt/ZSM-48 and Pt/ZSM-22 benefits the selection and development of one-dimensional zeolite-supported metal catalyst in a wide range of hydro-processing reactions.

Abstract:The co-aromatization of methane with higher hydrocarbons represents a promising route to valorize methane, an abundant but underexploited carbon resource. In this study, we elucidate a novel approach to enhance the catalytic co-aromatization of hexane and methane by confining Pt within zeolite catalysts and modulating its electron density. Our findings show that encapsulating Pt within MFI structure is pivotal for activating the feedstock and fostering the formation of aromatic products. Interaction between K atoms and the silanol nest forms siloxy groups which are critical for the stabilization of Pt species. Tuning the K content in PtSn@MFI catalysts adeptly alters the electronic configuration of Pt clusters. This modification is corroborated by infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis, and density functional theory calculations. Remarkably, the catalyst with 0.8 wt% K exhibits an optimal Pt electron density, driving its superior efficacy in the co-aromatization reaction, converting 0.78 mol of methane for each mole of hexane processed. By employing 13 C isotopic labeling and solid-state NMR studies, we demonstrate the participation of methane in the adsorbed species inside the zeolite channel and its incorporation to the benzyl site of the substitute group and phenyl rings in aromatic compounds, underscoring the importance of Pt encapsulation.

Abstract:One-step conversion of syngas to aromatics (STA) over an oxide-zeolite bifunctional catalyst is promising as an alternative route for aromatic production. Control of aromatic distribution and enhancement of benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) selectivity are still a big challenge. Decoupling the complex reaction network, the relative activity of aromatization and alkylation on ZSM-5 determines the aromatic distribution. Herein, the STA reaction was studied over Cr2O3/ZSM-5 to reveal the influence of the zeolite morphology parameters on aromatic distribution. Using the "substitution ratio of aromatic ring" SC9+/A to reflect the relative rate of alkylation to aromatization, the linear dependence of SC9+/A on the morphology parameter (1/b) of ZSM5 was revealed. The methodology for control of aromatic distribution by altering the crystal size of ZSM-5 along the b-axis is then proposed. By further enhancing the aromatization activity via ion exchange of Zn to ZSM-5, a bifunctional catalyst showing a high BTX space time yield of 2.47 mmol g(-1) h(-1) (on carbon base) with 49.1% BTX fraction is developed.
Comparative study on the catalytic behaviors of zeolites with different diffusion limitation in ethane aromatization

Abstract:The design of zeolite-based catalysts with reduced diffusion limitation has attracted much attention for the enhanced activity and stability in light alkane aromatization. Here we employed three types of zeolite-based catalysts including micron zeolite, solid nano zeolite, and hollow zeolite with nano size to investigate the effects of diffusion length and pore structure of zeolites on their mass transport efficiency and catalytic performance during ethane aromatization. It was indicated that the shortened diffusion length and increased mesoporosity of Zn/hollow-HZSM-5 endow it with substantial improvement in mass transport, leading to enhanced accessibility to active acid sites and rapid escape of formed lighter aromatics rather than further polymerization to form coke. Contrarily, the solid micron zeolites with long diffusion path experience strong diffusion limitation, which extends the contact time of reactants and products with the active acid sites within zeolites thus resulting in severe coke deactivation. After being subjected to ethane aromatization for 400 min, the aromatics selectivity toward Zn/hollow-HZSM-5 catalyst retained 50%, which is almost threefold with respect to that of the solid Zn/micro-HZSM-5 and Zn/nano-HZSM-5. Based on the Thiele modulus, it can be suggested that shortening diffusion length and introducing mesopores into zeolites can effectively alleviate diffusion resistance, then enhance their catalytic activity and stability toward ethane aromatization.
