Abstract:In this study, the cotton fabrics/cuprous oxide-nanocellulose (Cu2O-NC) flexible and recyclable composite material (COCO) with highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of dyes and antibacterial properties was fabricated. Using flexible cotton fabrics as substrates, Cu2O were in-situ synthesized to make Cu2O uniformly grew on cotton fibers and were wrapped with NC. The photocatalytic degradation ability of COCO-5 was verified by use methylene blue (MB), the degradation rate was as high as 98.32%. The mechanism of COCO-5 photocatalysis and the process of dye degradation were analyzed by using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum, transient photocurrent response (TPR) spectrum, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and ion chromatography (IC). This study analyzed the complete path from electron excitation to dye degradation to harmless small molecules. Qualitative and quantitative experiments demonstrate that COCO-5 has high antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli, the highest antibacterial rate can reach 93.25%. Finally, the stability of COCO-5 was verified by recycling and mechanical performance tests. The textile-based Cu2O functionalized material has photocatalytic degradation and antibacterial properties, and the preparation process is simple and convenient for repeated use, so it has great potential in wastewater treatment containing dyes and bacteria.

During the preparation process, nano-TiO2 particles were synthesized through an in situ strategy and grown on cotton fiber, and were wrapped with cellulose nanocrystals (NC). The prepared TiO2-Cot. was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The SEM and EDS results showed that nano-TiO2 particles were evenly distributed on the fiber surface. The prepared TiO2@Cot. has excellent photocatalytic efficiency of 95.68% for MB and 92.77% for AR under weak ultraviolet irradiation over 6 h. At the same time, it has excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The stability and reusability of the materials were also investigated.

Abstract:The photocatalytic property of available semiconductor catalysts still suffers from some urgent problems, such as the high excitation energy, easy agglomeration of powders, or weak recycling property. Therefore, developing novel visible light-supported catalysts and catalyst loading have aroused great attention recently. In this work, a novel Ag3PO4/BiVO4/MWCNTs@Cotton functional fabric was prepared by introducing Ag3PO4 as a plasma resonance photocatalyst and MWCNTs with cotton as composite substrates. Not only did the introduction of Ag3PO4 and MWCNTs effectively strengthen the application ability of BiVO4, but also inhibited the recombination of carriers, and promoted the transport of carriers according to spectroscopic and electrochemical tests. Degradation tests remained that Ag3PO4/BiVO4/MWCNTs @cotton retained the high photocatalytic efficiency of the powder catalyst, along with the degradation degree of active blue KN-R (50mg/L) as well as Cr (VI) (20mg/L) could reach more than 90% within 120 min. What's more, the functional fabric has gained excellent performance in degrading pollutants for 5 cycles. Meanwhile, the prepared BiVO4 is consistent with the band structure and electron density calculated theoretically by the GGA-PBE function. Free radical trapping and scavenging experiments exhibited that functional fabrics could produce active substances such as h+,·O2-, and·OH, among which the first two are the main active substances in the reaction. To sum up, this study is an effective attempt based on the existing problems of photocatalysts together with providing some study directions for the development of photocatalytic technology in the future.
Immobilizing CuO/BiVO4 nanocomposite on PDA-templated cotton fabric for visible light photocatalysis, antimicrobial activity and UV protection

Abstract:CuO/BiVO4 (BVO) nanocomposite photocatalyst was immobilized on cotton fabrics through polydopamine (PDA) templating for multiple application including highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysis, antimicrobial activity and UV protection. The morphology and structure of CuO/BVO nanocomposites and the coated fabrics were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The functionalized cotton fabrics were found to be highly effective in degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation with stability and recyclability, and about 97.7% of MB aqueous solution was degraded after 200 min exposure with 92.1% of the photocatalytic activity preserved even after five recycles. The mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed. The coated fabrics also demonstrated to be UV protective and antimicrobial. This work will benefit the development of durable and recyclable textile based photocatalysts with multiple function.

In situ preparation of Bi2WO6/CAU-17 photocatalyst with excellent photocatalytic activity for dye degradation

Abstract:As an organic–inorganic hybrid material, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has a great development prospect in the field of photocatalysis. Herein, the in situ growth of Bi-based MOF (CAU-17) on Bi2WO6 was utilized to obtain Bi2WO6/CAU-17 photocatalyst by a simple solvothermal transformation method. Bi2WO6 can be used both as template and Bi source. The structure and morphology of Bi2WO6/CAU-17 composites were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectra, UV–vis diffuse reflectance absorption spectra and scanning electronic microscopy, and transmission electron microscope. The results showed Bi2WO6/CAU-17 composites were successfully constructed by growing CAU-17 in situ on Bi2WO6. Compared with pure Bi2WO6 and CAU-17, Bi2WO6/CAU-17-1 h composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Rhodamine B, and its rate constant was 0.02083 min−1. In addition, the quantum yield and space time yield of the obtained photocatalyst were 2.56 × 10−6 molecules/photon and 1.28 × 10−7 molecules/photon·mg, respectively. Bi2WO6/CAU-17 also exhibits better values of the modified FOM (figure of merit). This method provides a potential opportunity for the development of in situ growth of similar MOF materials for water treatment and other possible applications in the future.

Abstract:In this work, a visible-light-driven BiOCl/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst was obtained via a facile hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ultraviolet/visible light diffuse reflection spectroscopy (UV/Vis), and photocurrent (PC). BiOCl/Bi2WO6 was modified with (3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyl) trimethyl ammonium chloride to obtain the cationized BiOCl/Bi2WO6. Cotton fabric was pretreated with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium chloroacetate solution to obtain carboxymethylated cotton fabric, which was further reacted with cationized BiOCl/Bi2WO6 to achieve finished cotton fabric. The cotton fabrics were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), XRD, SEM, and EDS. The photocatalytic activity of the BiOCl/Bi2WO6 photocatalyst and cotton fabrics was assessed by photocatalytic degradation of MB (methylene blue) solution under simulated visible light. The self-cleaning property of cotton fabrics was evaluated by removing MB solution and red-wine stains. Results revealed that the coated cotton fabrics exhibited appreciable photocatalytic and self-cleaning performance. In addition, anti-UV studies showed that the finished cotton fabrics had remarkable UV blocking properties in the UVA and UVB regions. Therefore, the finished cotton fabric with BiOCl/Bi2WO6 can provide a framework for the development of multifunctional textiles.

Abstract:Fabrics have been used broadly in daily life for an enormous variety of applications due to their intrinsic advantages, such as flexibility, renewability, and good processability. Integrating natural fabrics with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is an effective strategy to improve the added value of textiles with special functionalities. Here, a facile, low-cost, and scalable technology is reported for the in situ growth of MOFs on cotton fabrics. A uniform and dense coating of regular octahedral Cu-1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid (CuBTC) crystals was formed on the fiber surface, followed by treatment with 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane and triethoxyoctylsilane to create a superhydrophobic CuBTC@cotton fabric (SMCF), which greatly improved its water stability and extended superhydrophobic CuBTC's potential applications. The as-prepared MCF has a specific surface area of 229 m2/g, which is 11 times that of pristine fabrics (21 m2/g). This high porosity further endows the fabric with enhanced loading capacity of essential oils to enable excellent antibacterial ability. Moreover, the SMCF also exhibits excellent self-cleaning, UV shielding, and anti-icing performances. In addition, we performed COMSOL simulations to investigate the dynamic freezing process of water on the surface of samples, which agrees well with our experimental observations. By combining the merits of both fabrics and MOFs, the MCF is expected to extend the applications of traditional textiles in antifouling, safety, the fragrance industry, and healthcare for the next-generation multifunctional fabrics.

A photothermal cellulose-based material for rapid anti-bacteria and HCHO removal via sequential formation of MnO 2 coatings and amine-quinone networks

Abstract:Nowadays, with the rapid growth of population and acceleration of global urbanization, the microbial contamination on textiles and continuous formaldehyde (HCHO) releases from indoor decoration have aroused public attentions along with the textile consumption. Herein, a green, novel method for preparation of a multifunctional cotton fabric was reported, via the combination use of mussel-inspired fabrication of amine-quinone networks (AQN) and in-situ deposition of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). Unlike the conventional methods under extreme conditions, in this method, the MnO 2 particles were efficiently deposited on the fiber surfaces at room temperature within 30 min in the presence of reductive AQN surface composed of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and dopamine, and the MnO 2 -deposited cotton fabric exhibits efficient photothermal antibacterial capability against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , with inactivation efficiencies over 97% after 20 min of irradiation. In addition, this multi-functional fabric shows prominent UV-shielding property (UPF > 100) and HCHO purification ability, making 106.04 μg of HCHO rapidly removed within 30 min by 2.5 g of modified cotton. Therefore, we believe that the functional fabric exhibits wide applications in the fields of home textiles for antibacterial and air purification under mild conditions, and the special AQN structure can be further expanded to fabrications of other multifunctional nano-composites.

Abstract:Abstract Cellulose fiber-based textiles are ubiquitous in daily life for their processability, biodegradability, and outstanding flexibility. Integrating cellulose textiles with functional coating materials can unlock their potential functionalities to engage diverse applications. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are ideal candidate materials for such integration, thanks to their unique merits, such as large specific surface area, tunable pore size, and species diversity. However, achieving scalable fabrication of MOFs-textiles with high mechanical durability remains challenging. Here, we report a facile and scalable strategy for direct MOF growth on cotton fibers grafted via the diazonium chemistry. The as-prepared ZIF-67-Cotton textile (ZIF-67-CT) exhibits excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance and organic contamination degradation via the peroxymonosulfate activation. The ZIF-67-CT is also used to encapsulate essential oils such as carvacrol to enable antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus . Additionally, by directly tethering a hydrophobic molecular layer onto the MOF-coated surface, superhydrophobic ZIF-67-CT is achieved with excellent self-cleaning, antifouling, and oil-water separation performances. More importantly, the reported strategy is generic and applicable to other MOFs and cellulose fiber-based materials, and various large-scale multi-functional MOFs-textiles can be successfully manufactured, resulting in vast applications in wastewater purification, fragrance industry, and outdoor gears.

Abstract:Graphite-like carbon nitride (g-C3N4) nanosheets have been facilely assembled via electrostatic interaction onto cotton fabrics for achieving multi-functionalities. The surface morphologies, chemical composition and optical features of the g-C3N4-coated fabrics were characterized. The treated cotton fabrics exhibited remarkable photocatalytic degradation activity and superior self-cleaning performance. A complete degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and removal of stains were accomplished under simulated sunlight irradiation. More importantly, the modified fabrics can be reused in catalysis reactions with great durability. The practical treatment approach demonstrated from this work has great potential to be applied in textile industry for functional fabrics manufacture.

Abstract:Two kinds of nano TiO2-polyacrylate hybrid dispersions, TBM-w and TBM-e were synthesized by in-situ suspension polymerization and solution polymerization respectively, in order to fix the nano TiO2 on fabrics. The photocatalytic self-cleaning fabrics have received much attention in recent years for its water-saving and environment-protection advantages. However, the fixation of the photocatalyst on fabrics is still a key problem that inhibits industrialization of these eco-friendly fabrics. The cotton fabric was treated by the two hybrid dispersions. The photocatalytic self-cleaning property was characterized. Infrared spectroscopy, burning loss test and thermogravimetry showed that some copolymer chains entangled with the nano TiO2. Transmission electron microscope illustrated that there was a polymeric layer on the surface of nano TiO2. The average diameter of TBM-w was smaller than that of TBM-e based on size analysis. The photocatalytic decoloration of the grape syrup indicated that the fabric with TiO2-polymer hybrid had excellent self-cleaning property.

Abstract:In this study, a multifunctional cotton fabric with durable superhydrophobic, antibacterial, and UV resistance properties was prepared by in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 on cotton fabric surface, followed by polydimethylsiloxane modification. The as-obtained multifunctional cotton fabric not only showed superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 153.0° ± 2.7°, but also displayed good UV resistance with a UV protection factor value of 32. Furthermore, the as-obtained cotton fabric exhibited excellent antibacterial activities against S. aureus and E. coli. Besides, the as-prepared multifunctional cotton fabric had good resistance to mechanical abrasion. Consequently, this multifunctional fabric could be potentially applied to antibacterial and anti-ultraviolet field.Graphic abstract

Abstract:The in situ growth of Bi-based metal–organic framework (MOF) (CAU-17) on BiOBr 2D material was prepared for the first time by using a facile solvothermal transformation approach. The BiOBr was applied both as template to support the growth of MOF and as Bi3+ source of MOF. The BiOBr/CAU-17-2h composite exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB), methylene blue (MB), and methyl orange (MO) under visible light irradiation, suggesting a good synergy between BiOBr and CAU-17 MOF.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by industrial organic dyes poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. Natural cellulose fibers functionalized with photocatalysts are regarded as promising materials for removing organic dyes. However, the immobilized photocatalysts usually exhibit a high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers, which seriously reduces the photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, a photocatalytic functional cotton fabric was prepared by a two-step process, including in-situ gas-phase polymerization of pyrrole and layer-by-layer self-assembly process of bismuth oxyiodide. The conjugated molecular structure of polypyrrole (PPy) conductive polymer could effectively facilitate the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs of bismuth oxyiodide photocatalyst on the fiber surface. The ability of composite fabrics to absorb visible light was greatly enhanced. The photocatalytic functional fabric exhibited a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards organic dye contaminants. On the other hand, the PPy nano-layers on cotton fibers induced bismuth oxyiodide nanosheets to self-assemble a more dense porous structure, which trapped a large amount of tiny air. The prepared fabric exhibited an obvious superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle above 150° and an excellent self-cleaning ability toward liquid/solid contaminants. This work provides a new insight into water treatment through the development of efficient photocatalytic textiles.

Abstract:The development of green and efficient methods for removing multiple contaminants including combined organic and inorganic pollutants is imperative and yet challenging in view of practical applications. Herein, we present the preparation, characterization and performance of UiO-66/BiOBr heterojunction functionalized cotton fabrics (CFUB), which is a new photocatalyst constructed by assembling the components of metal-organic frameworks UiO-66 and BiOBr onto cotton fabrics via solvothermal reactions. CFUB was not only capable to remove rhodamine B (RhB) or Cr(VI), respectively, as single pollutant under simulated visible light irradiation, but also exhibited highly improved performance in simultaneously degrading binary RhB and Cr(VI) pollutants. CFUB could degrade single RhB efficiently in 40–80 min within acidic to neutral pH ranges, while single Cr(VI) in a solution at pH 2.5 was almost totally reduced to Cr(III) in 80 min. When a mixed solution containing RhB and Cr(VI) under pH 2.5 was irradiated, CFUB could completely remove RhB and Cr(VI) in 20 and 60 min, respectively. The enhanced activity of CFUB was ascribed to the improved visible light absorption intensity and promoted separation and transfer of charge carriers endowed by the fabrics bound UiO-66/BiOBr heterojunctions. CFUB showed excellent stability and reusability and the tests on several dyes stains also demonstrated that CFUB possessed good visible-light driven self-cleaning property. The possible mechanisms for employing CFUB to eliminate single RhB and Cr(VI) or their mixture were put forward. This work may introduce a portable, durable and recyclable textile based photocatalyst with multifunctional applications.

Abstract:Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized in situ on cotton, one of the most popular cellulose materials, to achieve functionalization. The localized surface plasmon resonance of the AuNPs imparted the cotton fabric with colors, showing good colorfastness to washing and rubbing. Characterization of the surface morphology and chemical composition of the modified cotton fabric confirmed synthesis and coating of the AuNPs on cotton fibers. The relationship between the morphology of the AuNPs and the optical properties of the cotton fabric was analyzed. Acid condition enabled in situ synthesis of AuNPs on cotton. Cotton with AuNPs exhibited significant catalytic activity for reduction of 4-nitrophenol by sodium borohydride, and could be reused in this reaction. Treatment with AuNPs substantially improved the ultraviolet (UV)-blocking ability of the fabric and resulted in cotton with remarkable antibacterial activity. Traditional reactive dyes were applied to the cotton with AuNPs to enhance its color features. The catalytic properties of the AuNPs on the fabric were not influenced by dyeing with traditional dyes. AuNP-treated cotton fabric used as a flexible active substrate showed improved Raman signals of dyes on the fabric.

Abstract:Uniform monoclinite bismuth phosphate (BiPO4) nanorods were fixed on commonly used cotton fabric using two-dip–two-nip technique. Chitosan and acetic acid were applied to act as cross-linking agent in preparing the finishing solution. In this article, BiPO4 nanorods modified cotton fabrics for UV-blocking, as well as photocatalytic degradation of RhB has been studied. This coated fabric was characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and UV–Vis diffuse reflection spectroscopy. Furthermore, UV-blocking and photocatalytic properties were also tested. The coated fabric showed better properties compared to uncoated fabric.

Abstract:Zinc oxide (ZnO) and zinc oxide-silicon dioxide (ZnO-SiO 2 ) nanomaterials were successfully incorporated into cotton fabric yarn using a single step sonochemical method in aqueous medium. The resulting cotton fabrics were evaluated for the ultraviolet (UV) blocking properties using ultraviolet-diffused reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS), wetting studies measured by contact angle, and flammability test by vertical flame test (VFT) method. The hydrodynamic diameter of the incorporated nanomaterials was in the range of 30–600 nm. 1, 2, 3, 4-butanetetracarboxylic acid (BTCA) was used as a cross-linking agent between the free -OH groups of the cotton fabric yarns. The results of ZnO-SiO 2 incorporated cotton fabric exhibited 8.8% enhancement in UV-B blocking, wettability of 124.5° and flame time of 9 ± 1 s as compared to control cotton fabric. The UV blocking by ZnO-SiO 2 incorporated cotton fabric was retained even after 10 washing cycles. The study highlights a single step method for the simultaneous in-situ synthesis and incorporation nanomaterials in cotton fabrics sonochemically as an alternative method for enhanced multifunctionality.
