Abstract:A cotton fabric/titanium dioxide-nanocellulose (TiO2-Cot.) flexible and recyclable composite material with highly photocatalytic degradation of dyes and antibacterial properties was synthesized. During the preparation process, nano-TiO2 particles were synthesized through an in situ strategy and grown on cotton fiber, and were wrapped with cellulose nanocrystals (NC). The prepared TiO2-Cot. was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The SEM and EDS results showed that nano-TiO2 particles were evenly distributed on the fiber surface. The prepared TiO2@Cot. has excellent photocatalytic efficiency of 95.68% for MB and 92.77% for AR under weak ultraviolet irradiation over 6 h. At the same time, it has excellent antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. The stability and reusability of the materials were also investigated.

Abstract:The unprecedented pandemic has highlighted the need for textiles that rapidly inactivate pathogens to protect public health. However, how to achieve rapid, effective and durable pathogen inactivation with the minimum antimicrobial dose loading has become a major challenge for cotton fabric modification. Here, a surface engineering cotton fabric (Co-CMC@Cu2+) was prepared by grafting carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) onto cotton fabric and then loading with Cu2+ via coordination. The Co-CMC@Cu2+ with minimal copper ion dosage achieved rapid inactivation, excellent comfort, good biosafety, and durability. Specifically, Co-CMC modified with 12.5 mmol/L copper ion solutions achieved impressive bacterial reduction (BR) rates of 94.3 % and 89.3 % against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively, within 10 min of contact. Moreover, the bacteria were completely eradicated after 2 h of continuous contact. Additionally, Co-CMC@Cu2+ achieved excellent phage reduction (PR) rates of 98.9 % and 100 % against phi6 and phi-x174 bacteriophages, respectively, within 30 min of exposure, highlighting its potential for viral inactivation. Furthermore, Co-CMC@Cu2+ demonstrated exceptional durability for pathogen inactivation, with BR and PR values above 80 %, even after 150 washing cycles. This novel antimicrobial and antiviral cotton fabric will be a promising candidate textile to protect public health during a pandemic.
Superhydrophobic CuO coating fabricated on cotton fabric for oil/water separation and photocatalytic degradation

Abstract:Cupric oxide (CuO) nanostructures have attracted great interest and are extensively applied for superhydrophobic coatings and photocatalysis. In this study, leaf-like CuO nanostructures were constructed on the surface of cotton fabric via simple and practical solution immersion processes. The generated CuO nanoleaves can provide the fabric with more interest properties including superhydrophobicity and photocatalysis. Therefore, the CuO coated fabric held superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle of 151.5 ± 1° by further 1-dodecanethiol modification. Due to the simultaneous superhydrophobicity and superoleophilicity, the as-prepared fabric was used for the separation of several oil/water mixtures and exhibited good recyclability. Also, we applied the superhydrophobic fabric to degrade methylene blue aqueous solution under visible light irradiation for assessing its photocatalytic performance. After being exposed to visible light for 120 min, about 99.8% methylene blue was degraded, implying excellent photocatalytic activity. This facile, cost-effective, scalable, environmental-friendly and efficient methodology presented in this study is promising for multicomponent wastewater treatment and oil spill cleaning.

Abstract:Water pollution caused by industrial organic dyes poses a serious threat to human health and the ecological environment. Natural cellulose fibers functionalized with photocatalysts are regarded as promising materials for removing organic dyes. However, the immobilized photocatalysts usually exhibit a high recombination rate of photo-generated charge carriers, which seriously reduces the photocatalytic efficiency. Herein, a photocatalytic functional cotton fabric was prepared by a two-step process, including in-situ gas-phase polymerization of pyrrole and layer-by-layer self-assembly process of bismuth oxyiodide. The conjugated molecular structure of polypyrrole (PPy) conductive polymer could effectively facilitate the separation of photo-generated electron-hole pairs of bismuth oxyiodide photocatalyst on the fiber surface. The ability of composite fabrics to absorb visible light was greatly enhanced. The photocatalytic functional fabric exhibited a high photocatalytic degradation efficiency towards organic dye contaminants. On the other hand, the PPy nano-layers on cotton fibers induced bismuth oxyiodide nanosheets to self-assemble a more dense porous structure, which trapped a large amount of tiny air. The prepared fabric exhibited an obvious superhydrophobicity with a water contact angle above 150° and an excellent self-cleaning ability toward liquid/solid contaminants. This work provides a new insight into water treatment through the development of efficient photocatalytic textiles.

Abstract:Nowadays, with the rapid growth of population and acceleration of global urbanization, the microbial contamination on textiles and continuous formaldehyde (HCHO) releases from indoor decoration have aroused public attentions along with the textile consumption. Herein, a green, novel method for preparation of a multifunctional cotton fabric was reported, via the combination use of mussel-inspired fabrication of amine-quinone networks (AQN) and in-situ deposition of manganese dioxide (MnO 2 ). Unlike the conventional methods under extreme conditions, in this method, the MnO 2 particles were efficiently deposited on the fiber surfaces at room temperature within 30 min in the presence of reductive AQN surface composed of polyethyleneimine (PEI) and dopamine, and the MnO 2 -deposited cotton fabric exhibits efficient photothermal antibacterial capability against both Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli , with inactivation efficiencies over 97% after 20 min of irradiation. In addition, this multi-functional fabric shows prominent UV-shielding property (UPF > 100) and HCHO purification ability, making 106.04 μg of HCHO rapidly removed within 30 min by 2.5 g of modified cotton. Therefore, we believe that the functional fabric exhibits wide applications in the fields of home textiles for antibacterial and air purification under mild conditions, and the special AQN structure can be further expanded to fabrications of other multifunctional nano-composites.

Abstract:Water pollution, particularly from organic contaminants like dyes, is a pressing issue, prompting exploration into advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as potential solutions. This study focuses on synthesizing Cu2O on cellulose-based fabric using Eucalyptus globulus leaf extracts. The resulting catalysts effectively degraded methylene blue through photocatalysis under LED visible light and heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions with H2O2, demonstrating reusability. Mechanistic insights were gained through analyses of the extracts before and after Cu2O synthesis, revealing the role of phenolic compounds and reducing sugars in nanoparticle formation. Cu2O nanoparticles on cellulose-based fabric were characterized in terms of their morphology, structure, and bandgap via SEM-EDS, XRD, Raman, FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, and TGA. The degradation of methylene blue was pH-dependent; photocatalysis was more efficient at neutral pH due to hydroxyl and superoxide radical production, while Fenton-like reactions showed greater efficiency at acidic pH, primarily generating hydroxyl radicals. Cu2O used in Fenton-like reactions exhibited lower reusability compared to photocatalysis, suggesting deterioration. This research not only advances understanding of catalytic processes but also holds promise for sustainable water treatment solutions, contributing to environmental protection and resource conservation.
Antibacterial Nanocellulose-TiO2/Polyester Fabric for the Recyclable Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes

Abstract:In this paper, we report an antibacterial, recyclable nanocellulose-titanium dioxide/polyester nonwoven fabric (NC-TiO2/PET) composite for the highly efficient photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The NC-TiO2 was loaded onto the surface of flexible PET nonwoven fabric through a simple swelling and dipping method. The NC-TiO2 in the particle size range of similar to 10 nm were uniformly attached to the surface of the PET fibers. The NC-TiO2/PET composite has the ability to achieve the stable photocatalytic degradation of dyes and presents antibacterial properties. The degradation rates to methylene blue (MB) and acid red (AR) of the NC-TiO2/PET composite reached 90.02% and 91.14%, respectively, and the inhibition rate of Escherichia coli was >95%. After several rounds of cyclic testing, the photocatalytic performance, antibacterial performance, and mechanical stability of the NC-TiO2/PET composite remained robust.
Immobilizing CuO/BiVO4 nanocomposite on PDA-templated cotton fabric for visible light photocatalysis, antimicrobial activity and UV protection

Abstract:CuO/BiVO4 (BVO) nanocomposite photocatalyst was immobilized on cotton fabrics through polydopamine (PDA) templating for multiple application including highly efficient visible-light-driven photocatalysis, antimicrobial activity and UV protection. The morphology and structure of CuO/BVO nanocomposites and the coated fabrics were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectra (UV–vis DRS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV–Vis spectroscopy. The functionalized cotton fabrics were found to be highly effective in degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation with stability and recyclability, and about 97.7% of MB aqueous solution was degraded after 200 min exposure with 92.1% of the photocatalytic activity preserved even after five recycles. The mechanism of enhanced photocatalytic activity was proposed. The coated fabrics also demonstrated to be UV protective and antimicrobial. This work will benefit the development of durable and recyclable textile based photocatalysts with multiple function.

Preparation of Copper Nanoparticles Coated Cotton Fabrics with Durable Antibacterial Properties

Abstract:When copper nanoparticles (Cu NPs) were applied as an antimicrobial agent to finish cotton fabrics, there are two issues should be solved: the oxidization and the weak adsorbability onto cotton fiber surface. In the present work, we developed a new method that can achieve both immobilization and protection of the Cu NPs at the same time. As an effective binder, thioglycolic acid (TGA) was covalently linked to cotton fiber surface via an esterification with the hydroxyl groups of cellulose, then Cu NPs were introduced on the fabric surface in the presence of a protective reagent, citric acid. Due to the doubled stabilization acts of TGA and citric acid, the Cu NPs immobilized on the fabric surface showed an excellent antibacterial effect and outstanding laundering durability. Even after 50 consecutive laundering tests, the modified cotton fabrics still showed satisfactory antibacterial ability against both S. aureus and E. coli, which the bacterial reduction rates are all higher than 96 %. It is believed that this methodology has potential applications in a wide variety of textile productions such as sportswear, socks, and medical textiles.

Abstract:Unpredictable pandemics are likely to pose a significant global threat in the future, and biologically protective textiles will play critical roles in controlling the spread of pathogens during outbreaks. Herein, we present a novel metal–organic framework (MOF) composed of repeating units of a Cu(II)/(L-Cys)2 complex formed through coordination bonds between Cu(II) and L-Cys, while being interconnected by ionic bonds involving Cu(II) and the carboxylate group of L-Cys. After covalently embedding the MOF nanofibers onto cotton fiber surfaces, the resulting fabrics exhibit remarkable virucidal and antibacterial capabilities. Abstract:An H1-Galerkin mixed finite element method is analyzed for a class of evolution equations with memory. When a classical mixed method is applied to such problems, it has not been possible to obtain any estimate for the flux. However, the proposed approach yields optimal order convergence without the LBB consistency condition and quasi uniformity of the finite element mesh. Compared to the results proved for one space variable, the L2 estimate of the flux is not optimal for problems in two and three space dimensions. Therefore, a modification of the method is proposed and analyzed. A maximum norm estimate is also derived in one and two space variables. A backward Euler approximation of the modified method is also analyzed.

Abstract:Cu‐doped ZnO nanoparticles coated on cellulose nanofibers fabricated using coprecipitation approach and electrospinning method. Doping contents improve photocatalytic efficiency of ZnO for visible light harvesting by reducing bandgap energy. Composite cellulose membranes present more than 50% self‐cleaning effects for coffee, tea, and red‐wine stains based on K/S evaluation. Doping contents significantly enhance bactericidal properties up to more than 99%. Cu‐doped ZnO nanoparticle‐loaded cellulose nanofiber membranes are investigated for their potential photocatalytic and antibacterial properties. ZnO nanoparticles, both undoped and doped with copper, are synthesized by the co‐precipitation process, afterward immobilized onto cellulose nanofibers through the utilization of a dip‐coating technique. Methylene blue (MB) removal is evaluated to inspect the effectiveness of photocatalysts in both UV and Xenon lighting conditions. The morphology and structure of the composite cellulose nanofibers loaded with photocatalysts are then examined using FE‐SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, and UV–vis characterizations. Under visible light, the self‐cleaning effects of organic compounds are measured, presenting more than 50% of discoloration for various organic stains. The antibacterial activity is assessed using the Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion method and the plate counting method against the gram‐positive Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and gram‐negative Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria. The current study shows that cellulose nanofibers coated with Cu‐doped ZnO nanoparticles exhibited excellent photocatalytic and antibacterial activities.

Abstract:The recycling technology of the photocatalyst powdery has hardly matured in the photocatalytic water treatment so far. In this study, a novel 2 core–shell nanostructure grown on the copper mesh was quickly fabricated through in situ engraving and hydrothermal deposition methods. The metallic Cu mesh is employed as the Cu source, substrate, and conductor. Also, the tight contact of CuO nanosheet arrays and MoS 2 nanosheet results in a shorter migration distance of photogenerated carriers to the surface of the @MoS 2 mesh (CCM). Benefiting from this rational design of CCM and effective charge separation by Z-scheme charge transfer, the readily recyclable CCM exhibits superior photodegradation efficiency with 79% removal of tetracycline (10 mg/L) in 120 min, which was better than that of (42%) and 2 (44.3%) under identical conditions. Furthermore, CCM mesh can be used for microbial inactivation, and the antibacterial efficiency reaches about 100% for Escherichia coli within 60 min visible light irradiation. Additionally, the CCM mesh photocatalyst indicates high reusability and stability without significant reduction in efficiency with nearly 69% degradation and 100% microbial inactivation after 5 cycles, respectively. This study provides a simple strategy to prepare a recyclable free-standing mesh photocatalyst for the treatment of pollutants and bacteria in wastewater.

Abstract:In this research work, we explore antibacterial activity and the UV-protection of cotton fabric functionalized with copper oxide-titanium dioxide nano composites particles (CuO+TiO 2 NCPs). Cotton fabrics (Cot) were treated with L-methionine (Am) and functionalized with bimetallic CuO+TiO 2 NCPs by pad and rolling technique. Cu(NO 3 ) 2 and titanium isopropoxide (TIP) were used as sources of Cu(OH) 2 and TiO 2 colloid respectively, which were then converted into CuO and TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs) for making antibacterial and UV-protective cotton. The method yielded a crystallite size of CuO and TiO 2 NPs of 18.09 and 32.5 nm, respectively. FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, High-resolution scanning electron microscopy-Energy dispersive Spectroscopy (HRSEM), (EDS), X-ray photo spectroscopy (XPS), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and XRD were used to analyze the functional group, morphology, chemical composition, thermal stability and crystalline structure of the functionalized cotton fabric samples. The results showed that an esterification reaction occurred between Am and OH in cotton fabric, which further enhanced the binding of NCPs. AmCot-CuO+TiO 2 NCPs exhibit outstanding antibacterial activity against gram-positive S. aureus and gram-negative E. coli . The UV protection factor (UPF) for AmCot-CuO+TiO 2 NCPs reached 50+; thus, multifunctional cotton fabrics with excellent antibacterial and anti-ultraviolet properties were obtained. 在这项研究工作中,我们探索了用氧化铜-二氧化钛纳米复合颗粒(CuO+TiO2-NCPs)功能化的棉布的抗菌活性和紫外线防护. 用L-甲硫氨酸(Am)对棉织物(Cot)进行处理,并用双金属CuO+TiO2-NCPs对其进行功能化处理. 分别以Cu(NO3)2和异丙氧基钛(TIP)作为Cu(OH)2和TiO2胶体的来源,将其转化为CuO和TiO2纳米粒子(NP),制备抗菌和防紫外线棉. 该方法产生的CuO和TiO2 NP的晶粒尺寸分别为18.09和32.5 nm. 采用傅立叶变换红外光谱、拉曼光谱、高分辨率扫描电子显微镜、能谱仪、X射线光电子能谱仪(XPS)、热重分析(TGA)和X射线衍射仪对功能化棉织物样品的官能团、形态、化学组成、热稳定性和晶体结构进行了分析. 结果表明,在棉织物中,Am和OH发生了酯化反应,进一步增强了NCPs的结合. Towards multifunctional cellulosic fabric: UV photo-reduction and in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles into cellulose fabrics

Abstract:Herein, the highly multifunctional cotton fabric surfaces were designed with excellent coloration, UV-protection function, and antimicrobial activity. These multifunctional functions were developed by in-situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) into the cotton fabric surface using a simple green one-pot "UV-reduction" method. Cotton fabrics were pretreated with non-anionic detergent, immersed into alcoholic silver nitrate solution (concentration ranging from 100 to 500ppm), squeezed to remove excess solution and then exposed to UV-irradiation (range 320-400nm) for 1h. The influence UV-irradiation on the thermal, chemical, optical and biological properties of the cotton fabric surface was discussed in details. The UV-irradiation promotes reducing of Ag+ ions and the cotton fabrics act as seed medium for Ag NPs formation by "heterogeneous nucleation". Increasing Ag+ concentration (from 100 to 500ppm) results in Ag NPs of particle size (distribution) of 50-100nm. Interestingly, the Ag NPs exhibited different localized surface Plasmon resonance properties causing a coloration of the cotton fabrics with different color shades ranging from bright to dark brown with excellent color fastness properties. The treated cotton fabrics also show high protecting functions against UV-transmission (reduction of 65%) and Escherichia coli growth (99%). The side-effects of the UV-reduction process are further investigated.
Multifunctional Textile Constructed via Polyaniline-Mediated Copper Sulfide Nanoparticle Growth for Rapid Photothermal Antibacterial and Antioxidation Applications

Abstract:Antibacterial textiles prepared by the combination of photodynamic and photothermal technologies exhibit potential applications for preventing microbial infections in life. In this paper, the deposition behavior of copper sulfide nanoparticles (CuSNPs) on silk fabric (SF) was regulated by introducing polyaniline (PANI), which can chelate copper(II) ions, aiming at constructing a multifunctional textile with efficient and stable photothermal performances. First, PANI molecules from free-radical polymerization was absorbed to fiber surfaces via intermolecular forces. Subsequently, copper ammonia ions were bonded to the fabric of SF/PANI via chelation actions and further interacted with thiourea loaded by chitosan quaternary ammonium salt, formed the organic–inorganic hybrid of PANI/CuSNPs simultaneously. Finally, poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) was used to encapsulate fibers for imparting antioxidant and self-cleaning abilities to the photothermal textile. The results reveal that the composite textile of SF/PANI/CuS achieved satisfactory ultraviolet resistance. The inactivation toward Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli reached 99.9% when irradiated for 5 min with a light intensity of 200 mW/cm2, remaining at a similar level even after washing 10 times. Additionally, PDMS encapsulation protects the deposited CuSNPs from air oxidation without sacrificing its photothermal performance. The present work provides a new strategy for developing photothermal antibacterial textiles with efficient, durable, and stable application performances.

Abstract:In the present study, the superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with ultraviolet (UV) resistance and photocatalytic properties were fabricated by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and CuS/reduced graphene oxide (RGO). The CuS/RGO particles enhanced the surface roughness, and PDMS was used to reduce the surface energy of cotton fabrics and increase the adhesion of CuS/RGO particles to cotton fabrics. The water contact angle (WCA) of coated cotton fabrics could reach ∼158.4°, endowing the fabrics with excellent self‐cleaning and oil‐water separation properties. It is confirmed that cotton fabric can obtain superhydrophobic property by adjusting the concentration of CuS/RGO and PDMS. Thanks to the good photocatalytic activity and excellent ultraviolet absorption capacity of the composite material, the superhydrophobic fabrics possessed outstanding ultraviolet resistance with the maximum UV protection factor (UPF) of 851.2 and photocatalytic performance with the photocatalytic degradation rate of methylene blue 92 %. Furthermore, the prepared cotton fabric retained superhydrophobicity after 90 h UV irradiation or 2000 cycles rubbing. The flexible superhydrophobic cotton fabrics with UV protection had promising application prospects in various fields. CuS/RGO/PDMS@fabric with UV protection and photocatalysis were prepared via dip‐pad‐dry method. The obtained fabrics showed excellent superhydrophobic properties with the water contact angle (WCA) about 157.8°. Due to synergistic effect between the hierarchical structures and PDMS, the obtained cotton fabrics showed excellent superhydrophobic properties and durabilities. The superhydrophobic cotton fabrics possessed excellent robustness against 1000 rubbing cycles and 96 h UV irradiation. More importantly, the functional cotton fabric also showed good UV protection performance, with UPF of 851.2, UVA and UVB of 0.15 % and 0.06 %, respectively.

Abstract:k]Immobilizing inorganic particles such as zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO2), silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) or grafting special biopolymer such as chitosan on cotton fabrics is the main method to prepare antibacterial and ultraviolet (UV) protective cotton fabrics. However, poor durability and complex finishing methods are still of the main defects of antibacterial and UV protective fabric samples. In the present work, the Ag/TiO2 colloid solution was prepared with using the carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) as a stabilizer, then the CMC and Ag/TiO2 composite nanoparticles were coated on the fabric via finishing technology of pad-dry-cure. As a result, the modified fabric showed excellent antibacterial and UV protective properties, with the values of bacterial reduction (BR) and ultraviolet protection factor were reached at 99.5 % and 79.0, respectively. Moreover, even after 50 washing cycles, these properties of the finished fabrics were not obviously reduced. These results demonstrated that the finished fabric sample has durable antibacterial and UV protective properties which could has a great potential application in the field of medical and outdoor apparel.

Abstract:We report here a simple and effective method applying a combination of chitosan (Cs) and Cu(II) ion to fabricate antibacterial cotton fabric with a remarkable durability against laundering. The antibacterial fabric was prepared by grafting Cs onto cotton fibers through a succinic acid linkage, following with loading Cu(II) ions by the coordination effect. The modified fabric achieved 100% bacterial reduction (BR) rates against both S. aureus and E. coli, and remarkable laundering durability was confirmed even after 100 washing cycles. Moreover, longer Cs chains grafted on fibers shown enhanced chelating capability with Cu(II) ions. When compared to copper nanoparticles, our strategy has advantages in terms of low dosage of Cu(II), reasonable cost, simple process, reduced environmental hazards, and improved antibacterial durability. This work is believed to be a practical strategy for developing environment-friendly and cost-effective long-acting antibacterial cotton textiles.
