Abstract:Optical fiber acoustic sensors with miniature size and high sensitivity are attractive to develop compact photoacoustic spectroscopy. Here, a compact photoacoustic gas sensor was demonstrated by utilizing a diaphragm-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot cavity as both the acoustic sensor and the multipass cell. A nanoscale graphite film was used as the flexible diaphragm to increase the acoustic sensitivity of the Fabry-Perot cavity and the cavity inner surface was coated with highly-reflective Au film to form a multipass cell for amplification of the photoacoustic signal. With a laser power of 20 mW at 1532.8 nm, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of ∼ 50 ppb for C 2 H 2 gas with an integration time of ∼ 100 s. The optical fiber photoacoustic gas sensor with a millimeter-scale diameter and ppb-level detection limit is promising for trace gas sensing in various areas including industrial process and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A proof-of-concept gas sensor based on a miniaturized and integrated fiber-optic photoacoustic detection module was introduced and demonstrated for the purpose of developing a custom tuning-fork (TF)-enhanced photoacoustic gas sensor. Instead of piezoelectric quartz tuning fork (QTF) in conventional quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), a low-cost custom aluminum alloy TF fabricated by mechanical processing was employed as a photoacoustic transducer and the vibration of TF was measured by fiber-optic Fabry-Pérot (FP) interferometer (FPI). The mechanical processing-based TF design scheme greatly increases the flexibility of the TF design with respect to the complex and expensive manufacture process of custom QTFs, and thus it can be better exploited to detect gases with slow vibrational-translational (V-T) relaxation rates and combine with light sources with poor beam quality. The resonance frequency and the quality factor of the designed custom TF at atmospheric pressure were experimentally determined to be 7.3 kHz and 4733, respectively. Dual-prong differential measurement method was proposed to double the photoacoustic signal and suppress the external same-direction noise. After detailed optimizing and investigating for the operating parameters by measuring H2O, the feasibility of the developed sensor for gas detection was demonstrated with a H2O minimum detection limit (MDL) of 1.2 ppm, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 3.8 × 10-8 cm-1 W/Hz1/2, which are better than the QTF-based photoacoustic sensors. The proposed gas sensing approach combined the advantages of QEPAS and fiber-optic sensing, which can greatly expand the application domains of PAS-based gas sensors.

Abstract:Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) gas sensors based on optomechanical resonators (OMRs) have garnered significant attention for ultrasensitive trace-gas detection. However, a major challenge lies in balancing small size with high performance when developing ultrasensitive miniaturized optomechanical resonant PAS (OMR-PAS) gas sensors for space-constrained applications. Here, we present a miniature optical fiber PAS gas sensor based on a planar-spiral spring OMR (PSS-OMR) that is in situ 3D micro-printed on the end-face of a fiber-optic ferrule. Experimental results demonstrate that mechanical vibrational resonance can enhance the sensor's acoustic sensitivity by over two orders of magnitude. Together with a 1.4 μL non-resonant photoacoustic cell, it can detect C 2 H 2 gas concentration at the 45-ppb level, and its response is very fast approximating 0.2 seconds. This optical fiber OMR-PAS gas sensor holds great promise for the detection or monitoring of rapidly varying trace gas in many applications ranging from production process control to industrial environmental surveillance.

Abstract:Miniaturized spectrometry system is playing an essential role for materials analysis in the development of in-situ or portable sensing platforms across research and industry. However, there unavoidably exists trade-offs between the resolution and operation bandwidth as the device scale down. Here, we report an extreme miniaturized computational photonic molecule (PM) spectrometer utilizing the diverse spectral characteristics and mode-hybridization effect of split eigenfrequencies and super-modes, which effectively eliminates the inherent periodicity and expands operation bandwidth with ultra-high spectral resolution. These results of dynamic control of the frequency, amplitude, and phase of photons in the photonic multi-atomic systems, pave the way to the development of benchtop sensing platforms for applications previously unfeasible due to resolution-bandwidth-footprint limitations, such as in gas sensing or nanoscale biomedical sensing.

Abstract:An ultra compact all-fiber quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor using quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonance frequency of 30.72 kHz was demonstrated. Such a sensor architecture has the advantages of easier optical alignment, lower insertion loss, lower cost, and more compact compared with a conventional QEPAS sensor using discrete optical components for laser delivery and coupling to the QTF. A fiber beam splitter and three QTFs were employed to perform multi-point detection and demonstrated the potential of spatially resolved measurements.

Abstract:In this paper, a fiber-tip all-optical photoacoustic (PA) transducer is demonstrated. The transducer is integrated by a silicon cantilever, a single optical fiber and a silicon dioxide tube. The excitation light source of the PA signals and the detecting light source of the Fabry-Perot (F-P) fiber-optic acoustic transducer are coupled in a single fiber through a wavelength division multiplexer. The silicon dioxide tube has a truncated cone-shaped cavity, which serves both as the F-P cavity and PA cell. Due to this special structure, the volume of the PA cell is 1.1 L and the overall volume of the transducer is 17 cubic millimeters. The miniaturized transducer, combines with a near infrared distributed feedback laser together with a high-speed spectrometer constitutes a PA spectroscopy (PAS) system for methane detection. With an averaging time of 100 s, the minimum detection limit is extrapolated to be 5.2 parts-per-million and the normalized noise equivalent absorption is obtained to be 4.58 107 cm1WHz12. The proposed transducer is completely suitable for remote, long-distance as well as limited-space trace gas detection.

Abstract:Photoacoustic (PA) remote sensing (PARS) microscopy, featured by non-contact operation, has shown great potential for PA microscopy (PAM) imaging applications. However, current PARS microscopy systems are mainly based on free-space light, making the imaging head bulky and inconvenient to use. These issues hinder selected applications such as PA endoscopy and handheld PAM. Here, we report a miniature probe capable of non-contact PAM based on PARS microscopy. By utilizing fiber-optic components including a wavelength division multiplexer and an optical circulator, the imaging head can be highly miniaturized with a diameter of similar to 3.0 mm. Also, since all light is transmitted via fibers, the fiber-optic PARS microscopy system is relatively easy to build and facilitates scanning of the probe. In vivo imaging of a zebrafish larva and imaging of lithium metal batteries are conducted using the probe, showing its good imaging capability. (C) 2021 Optica Publishing Group

Abstract:This paper reports a mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor for high-sensitivity trace gas sensing. The sensor primarily contains a sphere-cylinder coupled acoustic resonator, a cylindrical buffer chamber, and a fiber-optic acoustic sensor. The acoustic field distributions of this mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor and the conventional T-type resonant photoacoustic sensor have been carefully evaluated, showing that the first-order resonance frequency of the present mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor is reduced by nearly a half compared to that of the T-type resonant photoacoustic sensor. The volume of the developed photoacoustic cavity is only about 0.8 cm3. Trace methane is selected as the target analytical gas and a detection limit of 101 parts-per-billion at 100-s integration time has been achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 1.04 × 10-8 W·cm-1·Hz-1/2. The developed mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor provides potential for high-sensitivity trace gas sensing in narrow spaces.

Abstract:We proposed and designed a high-sensitivity fiber-optic photoacoustic gas analyzer based on resonant Herriott multi-pass cell (MPC) and fiber-optic cantilever acoustic sensor, which realized the double enhancement of the excitation and detection of the photoacoustic signal. The chamber volume of the miniature photoacoustic cell was 157 mL. The laser was reflected 20 times and reached an optical path length of 4 m in the PA cell, achieving the excitation enhancement of the photoacoustic signal. We conducted a comparative experiment between the Herriott-MPC and the single-pass cell, the results showed that the 2f signal of the photoacoustic system based on Herriott-MPC was enhanced by about 16 times. By using a near-infrared laser with a center wavelength of 1651 nm, the performance of the PA gas analyzer for CH4 detection was evaluated. Experimental results show that the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the system is achieved to be 3.7 ppb. Furthermore, the calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient is equal to 8.3×10-10 cm-1WHz-1/2. The continuous monitoring of CH4 in the environment for five consecutive days proved the feasibility and stability of the trace gas analyzer.

Abstract:A new methodology for the development of miniature photoacoustic trace gas sensors using 3D printing is presented. A near-infrared distributed feedback (DFB) laser is used together with a polymer-based gas cell, off-the-shelf fiber optic collimators, and a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) microphone to measure acetylene at 1532.83 nm. The resonance behavior of the miniature gas cell is analyzed using a theoretical and experimental approach, with a measured resonance frequency of 15.25 kHz and a Q-factor of 15. A minimum normalized noise equivalent absorption of 4.5×10(-9) W cm(-1) Hz(-1/2) is shown together with a 3σ detection limit of 750 parts per billion (ppb) for signal averaging times of 35 s. The fiber-coupled delivery and miniature cost-effective cell design allows for use in multipoint and remote detection applications.

Abstract:We present a miniature probe capable of both optical-resolution (OR) and acoustic-resolution (AR) photoacoustic microscopy. A gradient-index-lens fiber and a multimode fiber are used to deliver light for OR and AR illumination, respectively. The probe achieves lateral resolution of 3.1 μm for OR mode and 46-249 μm (at depth of 1.2-4.3 mm) for AR mode, respectively. The size of the probe attains 3.7 mm in diameter, which can be used for endoscopic applications. In vivo imaging of several different parts of a mouse demonstrates the excellent imaging ability of the probe.

Abstract:Vibrational spectroscopy is a ubiquitous technology that derives the species, constituents, and morphology of an object from its natural vibrations. However, the vibrational spectra of mesoscopic particles - including most biological cells - have remained hidden from existing technologies. These particles are expected to vibrate faintly at megahertz to gigahertz rates, imposing unpractical sensitivity and resolution for current optical and piezoelectric spectroscopy. Here we demonstrate the real-time measurement of natural vibrations of single mesoscopic particles using an optical microresonator, extending the reach of vibrational spectroscopy to a new spectral window. Conceptually, a spectrum of vibrational modes of the particles is stimulated photoacoustically, and correlated to a high-quality-factor optical resonance for the ultrasensitive readout. Experimentally, this scheme is testified by measuring mesoscopic particles with different constituents, sizes, and internal structures, showing an unprecedented signal-to-noise ratio of 50 dB and detection bandwidth over 1 GHz. This new technology is further applied for the biomechanical fingerprinting of single microbial cells with different species and living states. The present method opens up new avenues to study single-particle mechanical properties in vibrational degrees of freedom, and may find applications in photoacoustic sensing and imaging, cavity optomechanics and biomechanics.

Abstract:High-speed optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy (OR-PAM), integrating the merits of high spatial resolution and fast imaging acquisition, can observe dynamic processes of the optical absorption-based molecular specificities. However, it remains challenging for the evaluation to morphological and physiological parameters that are closely associated with photoacoustic spectrum due to the inadequate ultrasonic frequency response of the routinely-employed piezoelectric transducer. By utilizing the galvanometer for fast optical scanning and our previously-developed surface plasmon resonance sensor as an unfocused broadband ultrasonic detector, high-speed spectroscopic photoacoustic imaging was accessed in the OR-PAM system, achieving an acoustic bandwidth of ∼125 MHz and B-scan rate at ∼200 Hz over a scanning range of ∼0.5 mm. Our system demonstrated the dynamic imaging of the moving phantoms' structures and the simultaneous characterization of their photoacoustic spectra over time. Further, fast volumetric imaging and spectroscopic analysis of microanatomic features of a zebrafish eye ex vivo was obtained label-freely.

Abstract:Photoacoustic technology is a promising tool to provide morphological and functional information in biomedical research. To enhance the imaging efficiency, the reported photoacoustic probes have been designed coaxially involving complicated optical/acoustic prisms to bypass the opaque piezoelectric layer of ultrasound transducers, but this has led to bulky probes and has hindered the applications in limited space. Though the emergence of transparent piezoelectric materials helps to save effort on the coaxial design, the reported transparent ultrasound transducers were still bulky. In this work, a miniature photoacoustic probe with an outer diameter of 4 mm was developed, in which an acoustic stack was made with a combination of transparent piezoelectric material and a gradient-index lens as a backing layer. The transparent ultrasound transducer exhibited a high center frequency of ~47 MHz and a −6 dB bandwidth of 29.4%, which could be easily assembled with a pigtailed ferrule of a single-mode fiber. The multi-functional capability of the probe was successfully validated through experiments of fluid flow sensing and photoacoustic imaging.

Abstract:Quasi-periodic scanning combined with a register-fusion algorithm is proposed to realize tunable spatiotemporal resolution photoacoustic microscopy. Quasi-periodic scanning involves an irrational number ratio for the periods of scanning signals in two directions. It can provide sub-pixel spatial sampling for each frame. The proposed method can adjust the temporal and spatial resolutions by changing the data length for image reconstruction. For moving targets, the method can obtain a series of low-resolution images with a high imaging frame rate. A high-spatial-resolution image can be fused from these images using the register-fusion algorithm. The proposed method can acquire both motion and structural details of moving targets.

The performance of the sensor is carefully optimized by comprehensively simulating the dependence of the photoacoustic signal's amplitude and frequency on the geometrical characteristics of the sensor. The designed gas sensor is then experimentally validated and calibrated, and a sensitivity of /ppm to CO2 is obtained. Furthermore, the Allan deviation of the sensor's output indicates a gas detection limit of less than 2 ppm.

Abstract:To realize all-optical passive detection of CH4 in narrow spaces and harsh environments, a compact cantilever-enhanced fiber-optic photoacoustic sensor (CEFPS) resistant to electromagnetic and ambient noise interference is proposed. Through theoretical analysis and finite element simulation, a miniaturized photoacoustic cell (PAC) with diffusion holes has been designed and fabricated. The diffusion holes are used for the circulation of the gas to be measured and attenuate the external noise coupled into the PAC. The concentration information of CH4 is obtained by demodulating the vibration amplitude of the built-in cantilever generated by the photoacoustic pressure. The design of the built-in cantilever structure avoids the possibility of mechanical damage and reduces the interference of external noise in the detection of photoacoustic signals. The experimental results and the Allan-Werle deviation analysis of the CH4 signal show that the minimum detection limit (MDL) is 0.32 ppm with an integration time of 60 s. The normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient is calculated as 2.44 × 10−8 cm−1 W/Hz1/2. The developed CEFPS achieves performance comparable to conventional resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy CH4 detectors, although the volume is two orders of magnitude lower.

Abstract:A miniature all-optical probe for high-resolution photoacoustic (PA)-ultrasound (US) imaging using a large synthetic aperture is developed. The probe consists of three optical fibers for PA excitation, US generation, and detection of acoustic waves, respectively. The fiber for PA excitation has a large numerical aperture (NA) for wide-angle laser illumination. On the other hand, the fiber with a carbon black-polydimethylsiloxane composite coated on the end face of the optical fiber is used for wide-angle US transmission through laser-US conversion. Both the excited PA and backscattered US signals are detected by a fiber-tip Fabry-Perot cavity for wide-angle acoustic detection. The probe outer diameter is only similar to 2 mm. The synergy of the three optical fibers makes a large-NA synthetic aperture focusing technique for high-resolution PA and US imaging possible. High PA lateral resolutions of 104-154 mu m and high US lateral resolutions of 64-112 mu m over a depth range of > 4 mm are obtained. Compared with other existing miniature PA-US probes, to our knowledge, our probe achieves by far the best performance in terms of lateral resolutions and imaging depth range. The constructed probe has potential for endoscopic and intravascular imaging applications that require PA and US contrasts with high resolutions over a large depth range.
