Abstract:Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (ECR) is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality due to its ability to convert CO2 to valuable chemicals. Recent advances have significantly enhanced the ECR performance of various catalysts by tuning their oxidation states, particularly for Cu-based catalysts that can reduce CO2 to multiple products. However, the oxidation state of copper (OSCu), especially Cu+, changes during the reaction process, posing significant challenges for both catalyst characterization and performance. In this review, the current understanding of the effect of oxidation states on product selectivity was first discussed. A comprehensive overview of in situ/operando characterization techniques, used to monitor the dynamic evolution of oxidation states during ECR, was then provided. Various strategies for stabilizing oxidation states through modification of catalysts and manipulation of external conditions were discussed. This review aimed to deepen the understanding of oxidation states in ECR and enlighten the development of more efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.
Synergistic Interactions Between Co Nanoparticles and Unsaturated Co-N2 Sites for Efficient Electrocatalysis

Abstract:Transition metal-nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) single-atom catalysts exhibit high activity and stability for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Their electronic structure, crucial for ORR intermediates' adsorption/desorption, can be tuned by altering the coordination environment or integrating small metal nanoparticles. However, synthesizing unsaturated M-N-X (x <4) complexes with well-dispersed nanoparticles is challenging due to reactivity and aggregation issues. In this study, a novel plasma-assisted in situ thermal reduction strategy is presented to eliminate unstable surface groups for incorporating highly active Co nanoparticles (NPs) and unsaturated coordinated Co-N-2 sites. The unsaturated coordination structure of Co-N-2 regulates the electron cloud density around the Co center, decreasing the energy barrier of the rate-determining step of 4e(- )ORR process; while the Co NPs can accelerate the mass transfer during ORR through enhancing O-2 adsorption to promote the desorption of *OH and also facilitate the charge transfer. Thus, the remarkable ORR electrocatalytic activity and durability is achieved simultaneously, leading to excellent performance in an aqueous Zn-air battery. The work opens new directions and possibilities for the design and synthesis of efficient and highly selective electrocatalysts for ORR and other redox reactions.
Rational Design and Synergistic Effect of Ultrafine Ag Nanodots Decorated Fish-Scale-like Zn Nanoleaves for Highly Selective Electrochemical CO2 Reduction

Abstract:The electrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is regarded as a promising route for renewable energy conversion and storage, but its development is limited by the high overpotential and low stability and selectivity of electrocatalysts. Moreover, it is complicated to accurately adjust the nanostructure of electrocatalysts, which impacts repeatability. Herein, we propose the rational design and controlled preparation of ultrafine Ag nanodots decorated fish-scale-like Zn nanoleaves (Ag-NDs/Zn-NLs) for highly selective electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. The Ag-NDs/Zn-NLs can be in-situ grown on copper foil with simple electrodeposition and replacement reactions. Benefiting from the coordination and synergistic effect of Zn and Ag species, the reconstruction of Zn surface and the agglomeration of Ag-NDs are efficiently prevented, bringing high activity and durable electrocatalytic stability for CO2-to-CO conversion. The Faradaic efficiency for CO production reaches 85.2% at a moderate applied potential of -1.0 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE). This study provides a promising approach for controlling the catalytic activity and selectivity of CO2RR through the structural adjustment and decoration of transition metal based nanocatalysts.

Abstract:In the electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR), metal catalysts with an oxidation state generally demonstrate more favorable catalytic activity and selectivity than their corresponding metallic counterparts. However, the persistence of oxidative metal sites under reductive potentials is challenging since the transition to metallic states inevitably leads to catalytic degradation. Herein, a thorough review of research on oxidation-state stabilization in the CO 2 RR is presented, starting from fundamental concepts and highlighting the importance of oxidation state stabilization while revealing the relevance of dynamic oxidation states in product distribution. Subsequently, the functional mechanisms of various oxidation-state protection strategies are explained in detail, and in situ detection techniques are discussed. Finally, the prevailing and prospective challenges associated with oxidation-state protection research are discussed, identifying innovative opportunities for mechanistic insights, technology upgrades, and industrial platforms to enable the commercialization of the CO 2 RR.

Abstract:Converting CO(2)to valuable carbonaceous fuels and chemicals via electrochemical CO(2)reduction by using renewable energy sources is considered to be a scalable strategy with substantial environmental and economic benefits. One of the challenges in this field is to develop nanocatalysts with superior electrocatalytic activity and selectivity for targeted products. Nonmetal species modification of nanocatalysts is of great significance for the construction of distinctive active sites to overcome the kinetic limitations of CO(2)reduction. These types of modification enable the efficient control of the selectivity and significantly decrease the reaction overpotential. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent progress of nonmetal species modification of nanocatalysts for electrochemical CO(2)reduction is presented. After discussing some fundamental parameters and the basic principles of CO(2)reduction, including possible reaction pathways in light of theoretical modeling and experiments, the identification of active sites and elucidation of reaction mechanisms are emphasized for unraveling the role of nonmetal species modification, such as heteroatom incorporation, organic molecule decoration, electrolyte engineering, and single-atom engineering. In the final section, future challenges and constructive perspectives are provided, facilitating the accelerated advancement of mechanism research and practical applications of green carbon cycling.

Abstract:The recent development of nanostructured electrocatalysts for CO2 reduction has attracted much attention because they exhibit unique properties compared to their bulk counterparts. In this minireview, the latest studies on electrocatalytic CO2 reduction with a focus on the advances of nanostructured metallic electrocatalysts are reviewed and discussed. The distinct catalytic properties and potential challenges of nanostructured electrocatalysts are summarized. The behavior of nanosized catalysts in ionic liquid electrolytes is also discussed. Ideas for the design of next‐generation electrocatalysts by taking the advantages of nanostructured materials are proposed.

Abstract:The CO2 challenge is one of the most urgent issues at present. Conversion of CO2 to more valuable chemicals and fuels is considered to be a sustainable approach to deal with the CO2 issue. Electrocatalytic CO2 conversion (ECC) has received extensive attention recently owing to its mild operation conditions compared to conventional catalytic CO2 conversion, which generally requires harsh reaction conditions including high temperatures and high pressures. In the past decade, nanomaterials have been widely studied as electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion due to their intriguing properties including large surface area, tunable structures, and abundant surface chemistry, which generate enormous potential. Herein, we offer a comprehensive and insightful discussion in recent advances in the research field of ECC, especially the development of nanomaterials in the last five years (from 2015 to 2020) which have not been well-reviewed recently due to rapid development of the field. We also put special emphasis on structure/property–performance relationships and different catalytic mechanisms. Key scientific issues and prospective research directions are also presented. We believe that the insight in this review can serve as a clear guidance to design advanced electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion in the near future.

Abstract:The balance of the carbon cycle is destroyed by the increasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the Earth's atmosphere, which limits the sustainable development of human beings. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 under ambient conditions is an effective method to solve this issue by converting CO2 to value-added chemicals or fuels. In recent years, metal nanoclusters (NCs) and single atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in electrochemical energy conversion. In this review, we mainly focus on the electrocatalytic properties of noble metal and transition metal catalysts at a sub-nanometer or single-atom scale, with special attention paid to their catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the catalytic mechanism towards different products. Their main advantages and challenges are also highlighted. The purpose of this review is to give a comprehensive understanding and inspire further exploration of more effective catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 into valuable products holds the prospect for the shortage of fossil fuels and global warming. For the design of catalysts, manipulating the electronic structures of catalysts plays a vital role in the adsorption, activation, and desorption behaviors during the catalytic process. Here, we summarize recent progress in CO2 electroreduction from the perspective of engineering electronic structures of catalysts. The strategies include vacancy engineering, heteroatom substitution, atomic layer regulation, sharp-tip effect, and interlayer bond length regulation. Particularly, combining with the experimental and theoretical results reported previously, we provide an atomic-level insight into the effect of electronic structure on CO2 activation.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 into valuable molecules or fuels is a sustainable pathway for CO2 reduction as well as energy storage. However, the premature development stage of electrocatalysts with high activity, selectivity, and durability still remains a significant bottleneck that hinders this field. One-dimensional (1D) nanomaterials, including nanorods, nanotubes, nanoribbons, nanowires, and nanofibers, are generally considered as high-activity and stable electromaterials, due to their unique uniform structures, orientated electronic and mass transport, and rigid tolerance to stress variation. During the past several years, 1D nanomaterials and nanostructures have been extensively studied due to their potentials in serving as CO2 electroreduction catalysts. In this minireview, recent studies and advances in 1D nanomaterials for CO2 eletroreduction are summarized, from the viewpoints of both computational and experimental aspects. Based on the composition, the 1D nanomaterials are studied in four categories, including metals, transition-metal oxides/nitrides, transition-metal chalcogenides, and carbon-based materials. Different parameters in tuning 1D materials are also summarized and discussed, such as the crystal facets, grain boundaries, heteroatoms doping, additives and the electrochemical tuning effects. Finally, the challenges and prospects in this direction will be discussed.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) to produce value‐added products has received tremendous research attention in recent years. With research efforts across the globe, remarkable advancement has been achieved, including the improvement of selectivity for the reduction products, the realization of efficient reduction beyond two electrons, and the delivery of industrially relevant current densities. In this review, we introduce the recent development of nanomaterials for CO2RR, including the zero‐dimensional graphene quantum dots, two‐dimensional materials such as metal chalcogenides and metal/covalent organic framework, single‐atom catalysts, and nanostructured metal catalysts. The engineering of materials into three‐dimensional structure will also be discussed. Finally, we will provide a summary of the catalytic performance and perspectives on future development. Here, we review the recent development of nanostructured materials for CO2 reduction reaction, including the graphene quantum dots, metal chalcogenides, porous organic materials, single‐atom catalysts, nanostructured metals, and their structural engineering into three‐dimension skeletons.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to other high value-added chemicals under ambient conditions is a promising and ecofriendly strategy to achieve sustainable carbon recycling. However, the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is still confronted with a large number of challenges, such as high reaction overpotential and low product selectivity. Therefore, the rapid development of appropriate electrocatalysts is the key to promoting CO2 electroreduction. Over the past few decades, Au-based nanocatalysts have been demonstrated to be promising for the selective CO2RR to CO owing to their low reaction overpotential, good product selectivity, high Faraday efficiency and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In this respect, this review first introduces the fundamentals of the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and then focuses on recent accomplishments with respect to Au-based nanocatalysts for CO2RR. The manipulation of various factors, e.g., the nanoporous structure, nanoparticle size, composition, morphology, support and ligand, allows for the identification of several clues for excellent Au-based nanocatalysts. We hope that this review will offer readers some important insights on Au-based catalyst design and provide new ideas for developing robust electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical reduction (ECR) of CO2 is a powerful strategy to reduce the world's carbon footprint by converting CO2 to useful products such as CH3OH and CO. Recent techno-economic analysis has found that for the electro-conversion of CO2 to be adapted for practical use, the main products formed from this reaction need to be low-order, such as CO. This review summarizes recent progress in the ECR of CO2 to CO on nano-electrocatalysts (noble, non-noble metals and carbon nanomaterials) and provides the limitations and challenges that each electrocatalyst faces. It discusses the mechanism behind the performance of the electrocatalysts and offers the potential future prospects of the ECR process.

Co‐based catalysts emerge as one of the most promising electrocatalysts with high Faradaic efficiency, current density, and low overpotential, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance toward ECO2RR for CO and HCOOH productions that are economically viable. The intrinsic contribution of Co and the synergistic effects in Co‐hybrid catalysts play essential roles for future commercial productions by ECO2RR. This review summarizes the rational design of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, including molecular, single‐metal‐site, and oxide‐derived catalysts, along with the nanostructure engineering techniques to highlight the distribution of the ECO2RR products by Co‐based catalysts. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations and advanced in situ characterizations contribute to interpreting the synergies between Co and other materials for the enhanced product selectivity and catalytic activity. Challenges and outlook concerning the catalyst design and reaction mechanism, including the upgrading of reaction systems of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, are also discussed.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) into value-added products presents an appealing approach to mitigate CO2 emission caused by excess consumption of fossil fuels. To obtain high catalytic activity and selectivity toward target product in ECR, designing and developing a stable and efficient electrocatalyst is of significant importance. To date, metal nanomaterials have been widely applied as electrocatalysts for ECR due to their unique physicochemical properties. The structural modulation of metal nanomaterials is an attractive strategy to improve the catalytic performance. In this review, the recent progress of structural modulation, including size, facet, grain boundary, composition, interface, ligand modification, and crystal phase, is systematically summarized from both theoretical and experimental aspects. Finally, the opportunities and perspectives of structural modulation of metal nanomaterials for ECR are proposed.<h3 class="a-plus-plus">Graphic abstract</h3>

Abstract:With the increasing dilemma of energy crisis and climate change caused by excessive greenhouse gas emissions, it is an effective way to design low-cost and efficient catalysts to recycle CO 2 into value-added chemicals and fuels to solve these problems. Downsizing catalysts close to a single crystal cell, sub-nanomaterials(SNMs) show unique size-dependent properties and great potential applications in CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) compared with conventional nanomaterials. In this review, basic principles of CO 2 RR and brief classification of SNMs are elucidated. Then, recent advances of SNMs in photo/electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction are comprehensively summarized. Finally, the current challenges and future outlooks are emphasized to pave the development of CO 2 RR on SNMs. It is anticipated that this review would provide new insights to this unique scale and guided information on rational construction of SNMs for photo/electrocatalytic CO 2 RR.
