Abstract:The electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to other high value-added chemicals under ambient conditions is a promising and ecofriendly strategy to achieve sustainable carbon recycling. However, the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is still confronted with a large number of challenges, such as high reaction overpotential and low product selectivity. Therefore, the rapid development of appropriate electrocatalysts is the key to promoting CO2 electroreduction. Over the past few decades, Au-based nanocatalysts have been demonstrated to be promising for the selective CO2RR to CO owing to their low reaction overpotential, good product selectivity, high Faraday efficiency and inhibition of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In this respect, this review first introduces the fundamentals of the electrochemical reduction of CO2 and then focuses on recent accomplishments with respect to Au-based nanocatalysts for CO2RR. The manipulation of various factors, e.g., the nanoporous structure, nanoparticle size, composition, morphology, support and ligand, allows for the identification of several clues for excellent Au-based nanocatalysts. We hope that this review will offer readers some important insights on Au-based catalyst design and provide new ideas for developing robust electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Electrochemical reduction of CO2 provides a sustainable solution to address the intermittent renewable electricity storage while recycling CO2 to produce fuels and chemicals. Highly efficient catalytic materials and reaction systems are required to drive this process economically. This Review highlights the new trends in advancing the electrochemical reduction of CO2 by developing and designing nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. The activity, selectivity and reaction mechanism are significantly affected by the nano effects in nanostructured heterogeneous catalysts. In the future, energy efficiency and current density in electrochemical reduction of CO2 need to be further improved to meet the requirements for practical applications.

Abstract:The worldwide unrestrained emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused serious environmental pollution and climate change issues. For the sustainable development of human civilization, it is very desirable to convert CO2 to renewable fuels through clean and economical chemical processes. Recently, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is regarded as a prospective pathway for the recycling of carbon resource and the generation of sustainable fuels. In this review, recent research advances in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The referred electrocatalysts are divided into different classes, including metal-organic complexes, metals, metal alloys, inorganic metal compounds and carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials. Moreover, the selective formation processes of different reductive products, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-), monoxide carbon (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), etc. are introduced in detail, respectively. Owing to the limited energy efficiency, unmanageable selectivity, low stability, and indeterminate mechanisms of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, there are still many tough challenges need to be addressed. In view of this, the current research trends to overcome these obstacles in CO2 electroreduction field are summarized. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:The CO2 challenge is one of the most urgent issues at present. Conversion of CO2 to more valuable chemicals and fuels is considered to be a sustainable approach to deal with the CO2 issue. Electrocatalytic CO2 conversion (ECC) has received extensive attention recently owing to its mild operation conditions compared to conventional catalytic CO2 conversion, which generally requires harsh reaction conditions including high temperatures and high pressures. In the past decade, nanomaterials have been widely studied as electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion due to their intriguing properties including large surface area, tunable structures, and abundant surface chemistry, which generate enormous potential. Herein, we offer a comprehensive and insightful discussion in recent advances in the research field of ECC, especially the development of nanomaterials in the last five years (from 2015 to 2020) which have not been well-reviewed recently due to rapid development of the field. We also put special emphasis on structure/property–performance relationships and different catalytic mechanisms. Key scientific issues and prospective research directions are also presented. We believe that the insight in this review can serve as a clear guidance to design advanced electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion in the near future.

Abstract:The excessive emission of CO2 has caused many environmental issues and is severely threatening the eco-system. CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR) that driven by sustainable power is an ideal route for realizing the net reduction of CO2 and carbon recycle. Developing efficient electrocatalysts with low cost and high performance is critical for the wide applications of CO2RR electrolysis. Among the various explored CO2RR catalysts, non-noble metal (NNM)-based nanomaterials have drawn increasing attentions due to the remarkable performance and low cost. In this mini-review, the recent advances of NNM-based CO2RR catalysts are summarized, and the catalysts are classified based on their corresponding reduction products. The preparation strategies for engineering the electrocatalysts are introduced, and the relevant CO2RR mechanisms are discussed in detail. Finally, the current challenges in CO2RR research are presented, and some perspectives are proposed for the future development of CO2RR technology. This mini-review introduces the recent advances and frontiers of NNM-based CO2RR catalysts, which should shed light on the further exploration of efficient CO2RR electrocatalysts.Graphical abstract

Abstract:The balance of the carbon cycle is destroyed by the increasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the Earth's atmosphere, which limits the sustainable development of human beings. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 under ambient conditions is an effective method to solve this issue by converting CO2 to value-added chemicals or fuels. In recent years, metal nanoclusters (NCs) and single atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in electrochemical energy conversion. In this review, we mainly focus on the electrocatalytic properties of noble metal and transition metal catalysts at a sub-nanometer or single-atom scale, with special attention paid to their catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the catalytic mechanism towards different products. Their main advantages and challenges are also highlighted. The purpose of this review is to give a comprehensive understanding and inspire further exploration of more effective catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) provides a promising strategy for sustainable carbon fixation by converting CO2 into value‐added fuels and chemicals. In recent years, considerable efforts are focused on the development of transition‐metal (TM)‐based catalysts for the selectively electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (ECO2RR). Co‐based catalysts emerge as one of the most promising electrocatalysts with high Faradaic efficiency, current density, and low overpotential, exhibiting excellent catalytic performance toward ECO2RR for CO and HCOOH productions that are economically viable. The intrinsic contribution of Co and the synergistic effects in Co‐hybrid catalysts play essential roles for future commercial productions by ECO2RR. This review summarizes the rational design of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, including molecular, single‐metal‐site, and oxide‐derived catalysts, along with the nanostructure engineering techniques to highlight the distribution of the ECO2RR products by Co‐based catalysts. The density functional theory (DFT) simulations and advanced in situ characterizations contribute to interpreting the synergies between Co and other materials for the enhanced product selectivity and catalytic activity. Challenges and outlook concerning the catalyst design and reaction mechanism, including the upgrading of reaction systems of Co‐based catalysts for ECO2RR, are also discussed.

Abstract:Due to the industrial revolution the emission of CO 2 in the air reached to a noticeable degree (∼ 419.51 ppm) and continuous increase leading to effects effect adversely in the global climate. The utilization of captured CO 2 through its electrochemical reduction into valuable fuels or chemicals has emerged as a promising technology to address climate change. Thus, among the various approaches electrochemical CO 2 reduction is being progressively implemented for the conversion of CO 2 into valuable fuels or chemicals. Unfortunately, the current state-of-the-art of such processes is lacking with respect to performance targets for scaling-up these technologies to industrial levels such as high current density (>200 mA/cm 2 ) as well as stability for ∼30000 hours. Unluckily, in most of reported research these criteria found much lower. Distinctive properties of the electrocatalyst materials determine the selective, effective, and stable electrocatalysts of CO 2 reduction to industrial scale. The gap between the reported and targeted performance stems from the available electrocatalyst materials that dictate the selectivity, efficiency, and stability of the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 . In this review, we summarize recent progress made on the modification of low dimensional (LD) nanomaterials and their nanohybrids for the electrochemical reduction of CO 2 . Particular focus is placed on highlighting common challenges faced by these electrocatalysts, spanning recent advances on modified LD nanomaterials of CNTs, Graphene and MXenes. We further highlight areas that require additional attention in order for such catalyst materials to meet the required targets to enable the scale-up of CO 2 electroreduction to the industrial scale.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (ECO2R) is a well-established method for converting waste CO2 gas into valuable products. Carbon monoxide (CO) is widely studied for its advantages in the electrochemical catalytic reduction of CO2, which is of great importance to the chemical industry. As research on the conversion of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO has become more widespread, scholars have focused on basic research for industrialization. This paper summarizes the catalysts, electrolytes, and electrolyzers including membranes involved in the reaction process of electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CO, with an emphasis on intrinsic mechanism and conversion selection properties such as Faradaic efficiency, current density, and overpotential. Catalysts are classified into two main research categories: carbon-based and non-carbon-based, encompassing various aspects such as size, morphology, grain boundary density tuning, surface modification, and metal-support interaction. Additionally, the abundance of copper metal combined with other metals as catalysts, and single-atom catalysts composed of transition metals are highlighted for their significantly different catalytic behaviors and recent key advancements. For industrial-scale production, we present the types of electrolytes suitable for large-scale CO manufacturing and the structure of the electrolyzer. Finally, we provide a brief review of the future direction of CO2 electrolysis for real-world CO production, focusing on catalyst optimization, technological breakthroughs, electrolyzer design as well as working conditions, membrane innovations, and energy utilization.

Abstract:Electrochemically converting CO2 to value‐added fuels over metal nanomaterials has great potential due to their intrinsically‐high reactivity, and superb physiochemical, and structural stabilities. It is thus quite imperative to deeply understand the crystal orientation, surface structure, surface crystallography, surface modification, and many associated effects benefiting from the specific metal nanostructures, as well as, the relationships of specific nanostructure‐property‐activities. Electrochemically converting CO2 (CO2 reduction reaction(CO2RR)) to value‐added fuels is an advanced technology to effectively alleviate global warming and the energy crisis. However, thermodynamically high energy barriers, sluggish reaction kinetics, and inadequate CO2 conversion rate as well as poor selectivity of target products and rapid materials degradation severely limit its further large‐scale application, which highlights the importance of high‐performance electrocatalysts. Metal nanomaterials, due to their intrinsically high but still insufficient reactivity, selectivity, and stability, have been brought to the forefront and have lead to many reviews from various points of view. However, reviews which comprehensively unravel the importance and excellence of specific metal nanostructures and their associated properties for CO2RR are quite limited. To bridge this gap, various specific monometal and bimetal nanostructures are summarized, with an emphasis on the deep understanding of crystal orientation, surface structure, surface crystallography, surface modification, and many associated effects benefiting from the constructed specific metal nanostructures as well as the intrinsic relationships of specific metal nanostructure‐property‐CO2RR activities. Finally, the challenges and the perspectives to advance CO2RR are proposed to pay particularly more attention to architecture evolution during CO2RR with in situ/operando techniques, high‐throughput theoretical computations, and facile synthetic strategies with high yield and production for scale‐up applications.

Abstract:The increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration has caused many environmental issues. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) has been considered as a promising strategy to mitigate these challenges. The electrocatalysts with a low overpotential, high Faradaic efficiency, and excellent selectivity are of great significance for the CO2RR. Carbon-based materials including metal-free carbon catalysts and metal-based carbon catalysts have shown great potential in the CO2RR, owing to the tailorable porous structures, abundant natural resources, resistance to acids and bases, high-temperature stability, and environmental friendliness. In this review, various carbon materials including graphene, carbon nanotubes, quantum dots, porous carbon, and MOF-derived catalysts, etc., for the CO2RR have been summarized. Particularly, recent progress in terms of the mechanism and pathway of CO2 conversion has been comprehensively reviewed. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of carbon-based electrocatalysts for the CO2RR are proposed.

Abstract:Climate change, caused by greenhouse gas emissions, is one of the biggest threats to the world. As per the IEA report of 2021, global CO2 emissions amounted to around 31.5 Gt, which increased the atmospheric concentration of CO2 up to 412.5 ppm. Thus, there is an imperative demand for the development of new technologies to convert CO2 into value-added feedstock products such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, chemicals, and clean fuels. The intrinsic properties of the catalytic materials are the main factors influencing the efficiency of electrochemical CO2 reduction (CO2-RR) reactions. Additionally, the electroreduction of CO2 is mainly affected by poor selectivity and large overpotential requirements. However, these issues can be overcome by modifying heterogeneous electrocatalysts to control their morphology, size, crystal facets, grain boundaries, and surface defects/vacancies. This article reviews the recent progress in electrochemical CO2 reduction reactions accomplished by surface-defective electrocatalysts and identifies significant research gaps for designing highly efficient electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions are an important environmental issue that causes greenhouse and climate change effects on the earth. Nowadays, CO2 has various conversion methods to be a potential carbon resource, such as photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and photo-electrocatalytic. CO2 conversion into value-added products has many advantages, including facile control of the reaction rate by adjusting the applied voltage and minimal environmental pollution. The development of efficient electrocatalysts and improving their viability with appropriate reactor designs is essential for the commercialization of this environmentally friendly method. In addition, microbial electrosynthesis which utilizes an electroactive bio-film electrode as a catalyst can be considered as another option to reduce CO2. This review highlights the methods which can contribute to the increase in efficiency of carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) processes through electrode structure with the introduction of various electrolytes such as ionic liquid, sulfate, and bicarbonate electrolytes, with the control of pH and with the control of the operating pressure and temperature of the electrolyzer. It also presents the research status, a fundamental understanding of carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) mechanisms, the development of electrochemical CO2R technologies, and challenges and opportunities for future research.

Abstract:Abstract Electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) can store and transform the intermittent renewable energy in the form of chemical energy for industrial production of chemicals and fuels, which can dramatically reduce CO 2 emission and contribute to carbon-neutral cycle. Efficient electrocatalytic reduction of chemically inert CO 2 is challenging from thermodynamic and kinetic points of view. Therefore, low-cost, highly efficient, and readily available electrocatalysts have been the focus for promoting the conversion of CO 2 . Very recently, interface engineering has been considered as a highly effective strategy to modulate the electrocatalytic performance through electronic and/or structural modulation, regulations of electron/proton/mass/intermediates, and the control of local reactant concentration, thereby achieving desirable reaction pathway, inhibiting competing hydrogen generation, breaking binding-energy scaling relations of intermediates, and promoting CO 2 mass transfer. In this review, we aim to provide a comprehensive overview of current developments in interface engineering for CO 2 RR from both a theoretical and experimental standpoint, involving interfaces between metal and metal, metal and metal oxide, metal and nonmetal, metal oxide and metal oxide, organic molecules and inorganic materials, electrode and electrolyte, molecular catalysts and electrode, etc. Finally, the opportunities and challenges of interface engineering for CO 2 RR are proposed.

Abstract:Limiting global carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is imperative to alleviate global warming and meet the growing energy demand. Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising approach for achieving this goal. The utilization of single atom-based catalysts (SACs) has garnered substantial attention in this particular field. Although noble metal SACs offer many advantages in CO2 reduction, their high cost and scarcity have deterred many researchers. Consequently, the focus has shifted toward low-priced transition metals, which have shown better performance than some rare metals. This comprehensive review focuses on the research advances in electrocatalysis for CO2 reduction reaction using SACs in the past five years. The main synthesis strategies of SACs in recent years are also summarized in detail. Furthermore, based on the difference in the catalytic performance and stability of different catalysts, the review summarizes the performance of non-noble metal SACs (such as Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Sn, and Zn) with single metal sites in CO2 reduction reaction. The discussion of the potential mechanisms is included. Finally, the review ends by presenting an outlook on the difficulties and possibilities inherent in this developing area of single atom electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Converting CO(2)to valuable carbonaceous fuels and chemicals via electrochemical CO(2)reduction by using renewable energy sources is considered to be a scalable strategy with substantial environmental and economic benefits. One of the challenges in this field is to develop nanocatalysts with superior electrocatalytic activity and selectivity for targeted products. Nonmetal species modification of nanocatalysts is of great significance for the construction of distinctive active sites to overcome the kinetic limitations of CO(2)reduction. These types of modification enable the efficient control of the selectivity and significantly decrease the reaction overpotential. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent progress of nonmetal species modification of nanocatalysts for electrochemical CO(2)reduction is presented. After discussing some fundamental parameters and the basic principles of CO(2)reduction, including possible reaction pathways in light of theoretical modeling and experiments, the identification of active sites and elucidation of reaction mechanisms are emphasized for unraveling the role of nonmetal species modification, such as heteroatom incorporation, organic molecule decoration, electrolyte engineering, and single-atom engineering. In the final section, future challenges and constructive perspectives are provided, facilitating the accelerated advancement of mechanism research and practical applications of green carbon cycling.

In this review, we introduce the recent development of nanomaterials for CO2RR, including the zero‐dimensional graphene quantum dots, two‐dimensional materials such as metal chalcogenides and metal/covalent organic framework, single‐atom catalysts, and nanostructured metal catalysts. The engineering of materials into three‐dimensional structure will also be discussed. Finally, we will provide a summary of the catalytic performance and perspectives on future development. Here, we review the recent development of nanostructured materials for CO2 reduction reaction, including the graphene quantum dots, metal chalcogenides, porous organic materials, single‐atom catalysts, nanostructured metals, and their structural engineering into three‐dimension skeletons.

Abstract:P‐block metals excel as highly efficient catalysts for electroreducing CO2. This review thoroughly examines the current state of research, challenges, and prospects surrounding p‐block metal catalysts in CO2 electroreduction, placing special emphasis on rational material design, advancements in in situ/operando characterization techniques, and flow cells. Furthermore, the review outlines future directions and tackles critical challenges to facilitate their early industrial implementation. The efficient conversion of CO2 to value‐added products represents one of the most attractive solutions to mitigate climate change and tackle the associated environmental issues. In particular, electrochemical CO2 reduction to fuels and chemicals has garnered tremendous interest over the last decades. Among all products from CO2 reduction, formic acid is considered one of the most economically vital CO2 reduction products. P‐block metals (especially Bi, Sn, In, and Pb) have been extensively investigated and recognized as the most efficient catalytic materials for the CO2 electroreduction to formate. Despite remarkable progress, the future implementation of this technology at the industrial‐scale hinges on the ability to solve remaining roadblocks. In this review, the current research status, challenges, and prospects of p‐block metal‐based catalysts primarily for CO2 electroreduction to formate are comprehensively reviewed. The rational design and nanostructure engineering of these p‐block metal catalysts for the optimization of their electrochemical performances are discussed in detail. Subsequently, the recent progress in the development of state‐of‐the‐art operando characterization techniques together with the design of advanced electrochemical cells to uncover the intrinsic catalysis mechanism is discussed. Lastly, a perspective on future directions including tackling critical challenges to realize its early industrial implementation is presented.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is an important approach implemented in converting CO2 to valuable products, achieving energy and environmental sustainability. Recently, Cu-based electrocatalysts for CO2 conversion have attracted immense attention due to their fantastic ability to catalyze CO2 to various products with high activity and selectivity. This review summarizes the recent advances in the rational design of Cu-based electrocatalysts used for CO2RR, including tunable structure and size, exploitation of advanced supports, and composition engineering of Cu-based oxides and alloys. Meanwhile, the stability, activity, catalytic performance, and mechanism are also highlighted. Finally, the application prospects and challenges for Cu-based electrocatalysts are summarized to satisfy the need for advanced electrocatalysts for CO2RR.
